Welcome to our 1st pick...
Yeah we need this and that, but here's my bet after sifting thru the talk and BS. But hey if I was future-guru i would be doin' Omar 's job. wouldn't I?
Alex Mack, C
- Height: 6'4"
- Weight: 312
- College: California
- Conference: Pac 10
- Hometown: Santa Barbara, CA
- High School: San Marcos
Overview
One of the best among a top-rated center class. Since taking the reins from all-Pac-10 center Marvin Philip as a redshirt sophomore, Mack has been voted first-team all-conference three consecutive years (won the Pac-10's best offensive lineman award in 2007) and was a Rimington Trophy finalist each of the past two seasons. An academic standout, as well, Mack was the 2008 recipient of the Draddy Award, college football's academic version of the Heisman Trophy. Besides smarts and consistency, Mack offers rare size and athleticism for the center position, prompting some teams to view him as a potential guard in the NFL.
High School
Selected to PrepStar's All-West team ... Helped team rush for 2,031 yards in 2003 ... Listed No. 101 on SuperPrep's Top 132 seniors in California, landing him on that service's All-Far West team ... Played both ways, also logging 93 tackles and eight sacks on defense ... Named the Channel League's Co-Most Valuable Player on defense and a first-team all-league selection ... Two-time All-CIF choice and a three-time all-county and all-league member ... Voted San Marcos' Most Valuable Player in 2003 ... Also wrestled four years in high school and advanced to the state wrestling tournament as a CIF heavyweight champion ... Owned a 26-1 record on the mat as a senior.
said Kirwin:
Alex Mack, C, California: I've had the pleasure of interviewing Mack twice, once at the Under Armour Senior Bowl and once on my radio show. His interviews at the combine will excite coaches and general managers. Mack is all ball, all the time. Some people compare him to Nick Mangold, but Mack reminds me more of Casey Wiegmann and Ryan Kalil.
A strong Senior Bowl performance pushed Mack to the top of the list at his position, but it's tough for a center to go in the first round. However, if Mack moves well in the short shuttle, runs close to a five-second 40-yard dash and throws his weight around, it will be hard for teams in need of a center to pass on this guy.

That's true
If we sign Brown, then I think we look to the defense for our first pick. Specifically, I think we’ll be taking an Inside LB, possibly Sintim, possibly Mauluga if he drops.

if Maualuga - the name is Maualuga- doesnt have a good combine he might drop to us,
but I dont see it as a real possibility, that guy is the real deal.

sorry
forgot the other A lol. I don’t envision him dropping all the way to 25, because Denver is probably the most likely destination, and there’s about 4 or 5 other teams that might take him between them and us… but it’s still a possibility. I’ve seen a few rankings where he’s now behind Brian Cushing, so it’s not completely out of the question.
Sintim is the most likely pick if we’re looking LB, he’s the perfect fit for our D, and is valued right about where we pick.

I don't think he's got the size to be a 3-4 ILB
isn’t he only like 5’11 230 or something like that? I think he’s more cut out for a 4-3…

Mayock
has Mack as his 3rd rated center, behind Max Unger and Eric Wood. I don’t agree with that, because I watched most of the Senior Bowl practices, and Unger got beat up by BJ Raji, as did every other player Raji went up against, EXCEPT Mack.
But Mayock was THE MAN last year around draft time, hitting like 21 picks in the first round from his Mock. So I don’t know whether to go with his judgment, or go by what I personally saw..

Thats crazy
I heard Mack was a beast and was pushing back BJ even knocked him on his a$$,he is number one on my list then Unger and then Wood. Not to mention he is by far the best pass protector out of any center in the draft.

That's what I saw too
Raji dominated everyone but Mack, so I don’t understand Mayock’s rankings there… but the guy was so on point last season that it’s making me start to wonder.

Today I heard a hell of allot of talk about us leaning towards a nose tackle...
Sparano was quoted saying thats a hole…that will be filled. The the free agent class is not so great…and the draft is thin at NT they said….so the best way to get a good one is to take it early

yeah, we cant take a bet on Ferguson being healthy all 17 games
we´ve got to remember, and I bet the coaching staff does to, that when he went down our Run Defense was allowing something ridiculous like 7 yards per carry. And that actually would be the wise and logicall move.
1st Pick 2008 draft- LT (most important piece of the offensive line)
1st Pick 2009 draft- NT (most important piece of the defensvie line)
Bill Parcells builds teams Lines first.
So it add up pretty well
by MauMontaV5 on Feb 19, 2009 7:15 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah the draft is very thin at NT- it usually is.
I wonder if they will grade Brace out as worthy of a 1st rounder though? If not, would they be willing to “reach” for him instead of taking the highest player on the board?

Honestly
i believe Brace will be available at pick 44. And I think we jump all over him there. That seems like the best spot for him to land.

I'd prefer signing Jason Brown...
….but I’ll “settle” for Mack. lol
by Matty I on Feb 19, 2009 8:02 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
completely no doubt about it,
because not only is Jason Brown a proven C but then we get to spend our 1st round pick in another player to fill another need. Marvelous
by MauMontaV5 on Feb 19, 2009 8:42 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I think we are going to do what it takes to get Jason Brown here.
Mack would be a great back-up plan though.
by cbdolphin on Feb 19, 2009 7:34 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
yup
that’s the way I’d look at it. Go after Brown, if not, jump on Mack in the first round. Either way, IMO, the C position is fixed.

I dont see him slipping past Pitt also you never know he can go to Baltimore if they dont get a deal done with Brown but I think Baltimore either goes with a corner or wide out stranger things have happened though.

then through the gauntlet all the way to our spot in round 2. If we want him, I’m pretty sure we’ll have to take him in the 1st.

I agree
If we dont nab Brown my mock would be my wet dream
1.Alex Mack/if we nab Brown I would say best corner or lb
2a.Louis Delmas
2b.Ron Brace
3.Sean Smith-hopefully dont see him going this far but hell a man can dream
4.Brandon Tate
I hate to do mocks before free agency but if these are at least some holes to fill the time of the draft these are who I would like.Oh yeah rounds 5-7 im up in the air.

For the 2nd of our rounder 2er's...
I’d like Rashad Johnson. I’ve seen the safety class fall off a bit, with Delmas spiking into the 1st round of most mocks, then falling back into the middle of the second. He’s pretty much the barometer, because I think he’s the consensus number 1 safety this season.
So hopefully Johnson will be there, and we can get the playmaker our secondary needs.
