Thoughts on everything
As all of you have probably noticed, many people have been putting up weekly posts, and Iike that idea, so I'm gonna make one of my own: "Thoughts on everything". I have done this a couple times, but never really thought of it as a wekly post until now.
I have a basic format that I have followed when I do these posts; I pretty much go through every section of this team (O-line, QB, RB, WR, TE, D-line, LBs, the secondary, maybe some quick-hits, and add a poll or something) and just write what I think about it. So, here goes:
HENNE: Chad Henne had a great game. Even though a lot of people have disagreed with me, for reasons I will explain in a moment, I think he had a huge day. Now, some people tell me to look at some of those final drives that we had where he made some inaccurate throws, such as the one to Lousaka Polite when he was wide open in the flat for a potential touchdown. Although he did make a sloppy throw by floating it over the Monster's head, you have to look at it from both perspectives. Pessimist's perspective: He made a bad throw in a crucial time in a game; that could have ruined the game for us. And while that is very true, lets take a look at the optimist's POV: first of all, he is a rookie, he will make these mistakes, there is no way around it, but through these mistakes is where he can become a potential star. Also, if anyone noticed, he was being pressured on that ply, which could have forced him to make an inaccurate throw. I think the good outweighs the bad in that situation...
O-LINE: I am in love with our offensive line. Week in and week out they protect Mr. Henne and create holes for our RBs. As banged up as they are, they are still producing on the field for us. I don't think that they have allowed 2 or more sacks in one game since October! We really got our money's worth out of our O-line.
RBs: Although Ricky "only" got 75 yards on the ground, he also only ran the ball 18 times, thats a solid 4.2 yards per carry. Also, although Lex Hilliard didn't have the best of games Sunday, I still believe that this guy is a playmaker, in the passing game as well. Lex Hilliard is very fast for his size, he will surprise you if you don't know who he is. I think that throwing some screens to this guy might be effective.
WRs: I have been saying it for a long time, Davone Bess in the best (no pun intended) receiver that we have. He runs excellent routes, he catches nearly everything, he is CLUTCH, and he gets YACs (yards after the catch), and he demonstrated that for us yesterday. However we end up building up this receiving corpse I want him at slot and Hartline opposite to the #1 guy that we get. Which brings me to the next player; Brian Hartline. Boy, is this guy good. He has great concentration, will catch the ball, and although he isn't the fastest guy out there, he is a big guy. He, I think should be our #2 guy for many years to come. Next, I don't know why we don't ever throw it to Greg Camarillo. I have never seen him drop a pass, which is one of the problems that we have been having with our receivers lately. He will catch it with every part of his body, from his calf, to his head, and even with his HANDS! We should definitely utilize him more often. And Teddy. Good ol' Teddy. He made two catches on Sunday. Two pretty good catches. Does that change my opinion on him? No.
TEs: 2008's Anthony Fasano showed up on Sunday for a second game in a row. If he can continue to play this way, I will regain confidence in him; but I still don't trust him fully... I haven't seen much of Haynos or Speary lately, so, yea.
D-line: Our Ferg-less defensive line is still performing up to par, for the most part. I like the direction that this group is headed in. Merling, Soliai, and Langford all show great promise, and how about Randy Starks? Pass-rushing monster! And he is only 25! That makes me happy :)
LBs: I wanna see more of Cameron Wake, he put pressure on Tommy at the most important time; crunch time, do-or-die time. He will be a great player, he just has to work on his coverage. Peezy, continues to steadily improve since the first game vs the Pats. JT, solid, but isn't getting any younger. I also like Charlie Anderson and Reggie Torbor, but I still think that getting a star LB is an offseason need this year.
Secondary: Vontae Davis is the man. "Thats two!" I'm never gonna get tired of that. He and Sean have very good potential to be a nasty shutdown duo in the future. Sean Smith gave Welker some problems at times, but shutting down Wes Welker just isn't possible, but I still like Sean Smith. He continues to grow, especially in his tackling he isn't a big guy, but he is making big guy tackles, and some solid coverage. We have a safety problem. Gibril Sucks, Bell is old. We need to get Gibril out of Miami, and Bell only has a few years left. I see us replacing Gibril in the draft this year, and Bell in a draft in the near future, but he can still be effective for a couple more years.
QUICK HITS (Playoffs edition):
-Baltimore lost, that puts us one game closer to the wild card lead.
-Winning the division looks more and more possible now with the apparent falling of the great empire that was the New England Patriots, if we can finish strong like last year, we might repeat as division champs.
-Don't count the Jets out either. As much as I hat to say this, any team can go on a winning streak at any given time. They have as much of a chance at the postseason as we do.
-That loss to the Bills really bit us in the @$$, didn't it? If we would have beaten them, which could have easily taken place, we would be in the lead in the AFC East (by tiebreaker; division record).
-Also, all these close games that we had in the bag but didn't go our way is really haunting us right now. Like the Colts game, Saints game, or the sloppy Chargers or Falcons game.
-I believe that if we win-out, which is a slight possibility, we will make the playoffs, because the Ravens AND the Pats seem bound to slip, so IF we win out, we will make the playoffs. Now, can we do that? We will have to wait and find out.

Nice post
I like it, it’s like Gameballs, but for every position. I rec’d
On that late throw to Lousaka, I think Henne said that Lou was supposed to go to the flats, then turned upfield when he saw no one, and that Henne was not expecting to make that throw when he looked for his checkdown. He said he shoulda made it, but it was an unexpected change under pressure and he just rushed it. So that was a play that just went wrong.
And I agree, we REALLY have problems at safety, but I feel like the solution is already on the roster. I really liked what I’ve seen from Clemons, he looks like he can be a bigtime playmaker back there, and he’s got speed to burn at the FS position. I wonder if Gibril would be better playing in the box at SS, which apparently is his natural position. I would give him a chance there towards the end of this season and play Clemons at the free safety. I am very high on him.
Mission 4W is back on, the only way we get in is if we win out, so that’s what we gotta do and hope the football gods smile on us for another year.

cool! my first rec!
anyway, yea, i like clemons, too
but i think we need someone, not immediately, but in the next couple of seasons that is our Troy Polimalu or Ed Reed, people with good safeties (darren sharper, too) tend to have successful defenses
definitely
wish we were in position to get Eric Berry, but we may have a shot at Major Wright later in the draft to compete with Clemons. Hell, we could probably start both of them, Wright hits hard enough to play in the box.

Wright is more of a SS correct?

he's a FS
and probably isn’t big enough to play SS, but I think he’s a good enough tackler and hitter that he could make the transition.

Reggie Nelson might be available (Jaguars) for a 2nd - 4th round pick trade
Would you be willing to do that?

Stop drinking the cool-aid
Good Post. I like the idea of the weekly edition.
Having said that, read the subject line. We have a lot of holes on this team. Bess is an average receiver at best and a lousy punt returner. Camarillo, Hartline and Bess all play the same role (and are essentially the same player). We should keep one of them in the reg rotation. I vote for Hartline. Keep Bess as a 4th WR.
Remember what Parcells always says: you are what your record says you are. We are a .500 team. We’re 2 yrs away from serious contention, which means about 25% of the team needs to be turned over (like our LB’s). Our defense needs more work than our offense. It’s time for Sparano to WAKE up and start this guy.

so Bess is the 4th WR
and who else is going to catch the ball?

Since these posts are all about next year's projections......
We all agree the Phins are looking for a prototype #1 WR. If we get that guy (i.e. Dez Bryant in the draft or a big-time receiver either via trade or free agency) than we have #‘s 2-4 to fill out. I’m assuming Patrick Turner, although drafted to be that #1 guy, won’t turn out. As a deep threat, Ginn would be an ideal #2, leaving Hartline as our #3. We could even reverse those 2 guys. That leaves Bess as #4. I can’t honestly find another place for him. He’s the “hot” reveiver…the dink and dump guy. Nice to have on the team, but not someone you build around.

OK, here is the glaring billboard for you!
Bess is at worst, the number three. He is ideally your slot receiver but his short burst quickness can create enough space to throw short routes even when he lines up outside. There is no way have him as number 4.

I say, the guy we get this offseason at #1
Hartline #2
Bess Slot
Camarillo, whenever we can fit him in, cuz that guy catches everything
With various parts of his anatomy!!
For his encore I want to see him catch a pass with his mouth or knee!!

And then for his greatest feat yet, he will win a playoff game for us
…..get this……….Wait for it…………Are you listening………yep, you guessed it…..with his EAR!!

average receivers dont make big plays like bess has made throughout this year
im not going to say hes top tier or even second tier, but on a team of “average” receivers, i know i want to throw to #15—average or not

yea, i totally agree
except, bess is our best receiver, we should have him at slot, he is a perfect slot guy
Solution to Wake's inexperience / lack of ability in coverage...
Have him rush the passer ALWAYS
DON’T have him drop back into coverage.
I realize that you lose the element of surprise, but he’s so dynamic, I think he gets to the QB even if they know he is coming…

It's not the pass coverage thing that's the problem with him
it’s the run-stopping that we don’t know about.

Just some numbers to make you think....
Rushing the QB by the numbers…not including the game against the Pats as I have done the play by play analysis yet….through 11 games this year.
Porter………485 snaps, 7 sacks, 4 qb hits, 10 qb pressures
Starks……..488 snaps, 6 sacks, 6 qb hits, 10 qb pressures
Taylor………592 snaps, 7 sacks, 4 qb hits, 13 qb pressures
Wake……….109 snaps, 6 sacks, 4 qb hits, 15 qb pressures
Oh by the way, Wakes numbers are the best as far as a ratio goes for all defensive player in the NFL with more than 30 snaps played this year….IN ALL THREE CATAGORIES
