Better Know the Jacksonville Jaguars: Ask Big Cat Country

Hey Dolphins fans

I'm John, one of the writers at SBN's Jaguar blog Big Cat Country. Let me be the first to say, welcome to the playoffs. Real simple this Sunday, the winner get's the inside track on the AFC's last wild card spot and the loser is on the outside looking in. Although the Jags and Phins rarely play each other in the regular season, we seemingly play you guys every year in the preseason, so there should be some familiarity. If you have any questions on the Jaguars feel free to ask.

Thank you

for taking the time to come over here and answer our questions. I guess I’ll lead off.

This game will be close, I don’t think either side would doubt that. What facet of the game do you believe will separate these two on Sunday? What, specifically, will give one team the W and the other an L?

Second question: who will win, what will be the score/by how much, and why?

Ok filling in for John

I think the Jaguars can be beaten in the air only. I know Chade Henne lately throwed over 50 attempt so I think he can do that. Many depends of the possible return of Rashean Mathis; who is might be the best D (and undisputedy the best DB) player of the Jags. If he can return; it will be tough for do anything for the Dolphins. Also it depends how good protection Henne can get.
The Jags passrush is very weak (to say at least..) but last Sunday it came alive and resulted 3 INT; and 2 sacks.. If the O-line can protect the Dolphins; then you have a shot

If the Dolphins try to run the ball; they will be not so effective. Since the Jags were torched by Chris Johnson 200+ yards) they stopped everybody on the ground: Thomas Jones around 70; Frank Gore around 60; the Bills around 60 The Texans 68 last week.

If the Jaguars have the ball: Well belive or not MJD is stuggulined in the last 3 weeks. 1TD on Week 11 and that’s it. On week 12 the Jags faced the Bills and MJD cannot reached too good numbers… I think he has an injury; Although he showed life in the very endd of the Texans game; when he was all alone clinching the needed 1st downs-he did i so..

Another place where we have problems: red zone. We scored 1 TD in numeruos RZ possesions in the last 2 games.
Garrard fumbles: He had 12 fumbles so far: partly because of him; partly because of the interior O-line is starting to get reeeeeal old.

Where the Jags strong: Offense: deep roster. MSW; MJD was shut down last week; and the Jags still put 23 points to the board-withTDs from players like Nate Hughes and Ernest Wilford (yeah him…) and big plays from TE rookie Zach Miller; and Marcedes Lewis.
The Jaguars won every close games-except on oppening day in Ingfdy where we lost 2 poins (12-14)…
Run defense is a stonewall lately.
Team charachter-Somebody laways steps up!
Hiome field advantage: we are 5-1 at home this year…
Prediction: veeeery close game; I think it will be a nailbiter. I think because of the Jags winning this yer the close games and playing at home; and starting to co,me together: Jags win 24-23

I hope so

If the Jaguars will fgo into the playoffs we should send a thank you letter to Chris Brown (HB) who fumbled the first game at the 1 yard lin; and on Sunday he made a pass in the 4th Q; which was intercepted…We hope for stupid playcalling but Sparano is 5-0 in December…

Ok, I got 2 questions.

First, how is your passing game doing? The Dolphins have given up some big plays in the secondary, especially with tight ends. How have your TEs been playing?

Second, how is your run defense? The only Jacksonville game I’ve seen was the one against the Rams and it looked like the defense was wearing down trying to stop Steven Jackson as the game went on.

Both very good

If David has a good game; he cn always find 1 or 2 guys for big plays. The Jags receivng corp is better since Jimmy Smith was retired. ! good WR (Mike Sims Walker; Torry Holt; Mike Thomas; and from last sunday I say Nate Hughes-plus another rookie Jarett Dillard who is a young Tory Holt-sadly he is on IR.)
And theTEs: WQell Marcedes Lewis has his best year as a pro; he is playing like a 1st round choice(he was selected there in 2006) finally. Zach Miller a rookie QBturnedTE from Omaha-Nebraska is made the longest TE catch last Sunday. And Ernest Wilford(sounds familiar?) scored a TD last Sunday. So our TEs are in best shape…

The Run-defense playing LIGHT OUT lately: Last 5 games the stats are: KC: 60 yards; NYJ 110 yards-Thomas Jones at home 77 yards; Bills 53 yards (Lynch and Fred jackson combine!); SF 52 yards in SF Frank Gore 33; Houston 52….
You can beat us only in the air I think…

Short Story

Pass attack is very effective on 3rd downs.
Our TE’s provide 1-2 Big Plays a game. Mareceds Lewis and Zach Miller, ZM had a 55 YAC after one catch.
Our Wr’s get the good done, usually.
Garrard is good when he has more than 4 seconds of blocking.
Ricky Williams can’t run in the inside, but could have success on the outside.

It depends

He is on the course to his best season in passing yards.
If he plays good the Jags 90% win. He lead 3 game winning drive this season. He had finally a good cast of weapons! ANd when pewople mention ebow he is always playing lights out in the next game…Very good rusher; 2nd most rushing yards on the eam. Tough to tackle.

BUT he had off days; He lead the leagues with fumbles (12); which is mostly because of his aging interior O-line; but sometimes because he holds the ball too long.

How has thenumerical fan support been?

Do you think the opposing teams’ crowds have been unusually large vs. your own home crowd?
Has it ever made any significant difference?
What do you expect for visitor to home crowd ratio turnout vs a in-state team?
How would you gameplan to stop Pocket Hercules?
How are Harvey and Groves progressing?
How has Wilford been for you? Is he playing WR or TE? How did you manage to get him on the field?

Ticketsales

ARE the NR 1 issue in Jville. Aganst the Texans it was franchise low attendence (42000…)
I think we will see many Phins fans hav buy tickets on Sunday. I think it will be 65-35% Jag-Phins fans; I heard the ticketsales are looking on this weekend so far the best in the season. So I think we will se many Miami fans in the “Jack”(local nickname for JMS stadium)

MJD: He is sturgulling lately; maybe becaise of injury-he had 1TD in the last 3 games; and it was on week 11. Load the box against him; it usally help.
Harvey is slowly becoming a very good run-defender; and he had his 1st sack this year (which sidelined Schaub for the enough time the Jags won the game. Groves has got his last chance to stay last week (he lost his starting job to 2 UDFA rookies so far;) on Sunday he started; and played very well. Also he had an INT and an almost TD (he felt to the 4 yard line; without any tackles…)

Ernest is doing good! He scored D last sunday; and he is a reliable aget most of the time. He is playing as a TE. Look for see him on Sundy too.

As far a reggie: mixed feeling; with loth of minuses. He is not playing so well. Every time when there is a big passing game; the hardcore Jags fans wanna see immedialty wherehe on that play. Once he was put to the CB spot; we got burned big time. He has to show something in the last 4 games; or he will be traded away in the offseason. He is on the edge…

Really good so far

We didn’T allow any ST TD I don’t remember any big returns so far.
We must gave credit to Russ Prunell-We feared from the worse when Jack Del Rio hired him; but so far he is good.

As to our retuners: It is Brian Witherspoon and rookie WR Mike Thomas. They didn’t score any TDs; but they are done quite well. But they all do goofd and errors; specialy Witherspoon; although last Week Thomas made an error which costed a Texans 1st down at the 15 yard line (but ended a FG…)

Brian Witherspoon

is one of the quickest guys in the league. He’s got some seriously scary speed. He is a smaller guy though, so he doesn’t break tackles often, and last year he was little scary because of his lack of ball security. He’s put on a little weight in the off season and he doesn’t look as vulnerable to strips. If you want to stop him, you’re best off not letting him outside where he can use his speed.
Mike Thomas is like a RB with hybrid WR legs. He’s rocked up in the upper body, but he moves like Stephon Logan from the Steelers. not super shifty, but he breaks tackles and he’s super quick on stop starts.

Draft needs

Pass rusher-(I would sign a FA for that): 12 sacks in 1 year. Jared Allen and Elvis Dumervil has mor alone tha the Jaguars D….

Interior O-line(C; LG: Brad Meester and Vince manuwai are getting old/were not the same after injury
Brad is 10+ years in the league now; he starting to miss the beat-The Jags might keep him for 1 year teach a rookie to the post; but I see not much in hin. Manuwai had an ACL last year. He was a Probowl caliber RG in 2007; he is nowhere to that..

Jaguars will draft 1-2 DBs next year; It almost sure. Pass coverage was not te best in this year…

And a new QB for develop-Jags didn’t draft 1 since 2003-Byron Leftwich. It is time to find David’s successor

David is not an elite QB; but he is good enough to lead a team to the Superbowl; with a good supporting class. He has 1-3 good year I think left with the Jags

Draft Needs

1. 4-3 Defensive Player(s), we need an explosive playmaker that will become the face of the defense.
2. QB, to groom.
Tied 3. OG, aging interior line.
Tied 3. OC, above
Tied 4. Secondary Depth
Tied 4. DE depth
5. Complimentary Speed RB, we have a good backup rookie in Rashad Jennings but who knows.

Ok Zoltan...

Based on what your saying every player is a stud pro bowler…clearly your opinion is baised being a Jax fan. Realistically if your team was soo good and all these players were playing at such a high level, losing Mathis wouldn’t have crumbled your team like it has.

We have lost the MVP runner up, a pro bowl running back, a starting NT and CB and have managed to play at the same level. If we want we can run on you but teams have had so much success passing with that they figured they’d do that instead. You flat out drunk to think if Jake Grove was healthy that we wouldnt pound it down your throat.

However…if Mathis is infact out and as is Grove expect us to pass because it just makes more sense. I dont fear your wide receivers one bit after playing Moss and Welker twice a year along with the saints and colts. The only way Jax beats Miami is if Miami beats themselves, which i won’t deny is likely. You’ve benefited from a soft schedule and winning some close games to average opponents but I would like to see you match up against NO and NE before you make these statements.

Winning nail biters to KC and STL and getting shut out to Seattle (w/o MSW), and destroyed bye TEN and SF doesn’t qualify you as a threat…lucky for you there is something called “any given sunday”…but until you accomplish something, don’t go talking your players up like they are stars. Not one post you wrote seemed to be unbiased or level headed.

I would say

I’m level headed. And as far as I can tell he didn’t misrepresent anyone he talked about. He didn’t really focus on the weakness however.
Our weaknesses aren’t in the players he was asked about. Garrard is an above average QB. He doesn’t have a lot of TD’s but that’s because whenever we get into the Redzone we let MJD handle it. But I would take Garrard before a lot of QB’s with better stats.
As for our weaknesses…We really don’t have that many. Just that our biggest weakness is a glaring one, and I’m talking about our lack of a pass rush. It’s really even worse than the stats indicate. Last week against the Texans we finally had a semblance of a pass rush, and even without Mathis and with late trying to come from behind antics from the Texans, the secondary played well.
Our second weakness is our OL. It has been up and down, and early on we were switching people in and out causing a loss of cohesiveness. We also had the luxury of having to suffer through some growing pains of having 2 rookie OT’s.
I wouldn’t be afraid of our WR’s either. I wouldn’t gameplan my defense to stop them, but they make plays when they need to, which in many cases has been the difference.
Even if you guys had Jake Grove I wouldn’t expect you guys to be able to run on us up the middle. Terrance Knighton, John Henderson, Ellison, and Stanley have all performed admirably(All whom of which are better than Tony McDaniel). the only time we’ve been legitimately run on has been in the second Titans game, which had more to do with our secondary missing tackles; something that seems to have been corrected since then.
Now if you guys decide to pull some guards and run at one of our DE’s that isn’t Derrick Harvey we could be in for a long day, because then I imagine Henne would hurt us with a little playaction over the top.
And since you decided to go spouting off about matchups and our schedule keep in mind the Rams nearly beat the Saints and needed 2 pick 6’s to hang in that game. And KC beat the Steelers with a healthy Big Ben. SF nearly beat the Colts. And we played the Colts even better than the Dolphins did.
Bottom of the line is it will be a good game as we matchup well. I do think you guys are the better team because of your better OL and Pass rush. Otherwise I would rather have everyone else on the Jags team, except for maybe backup RB and as of right now Bess is a better pure slot receiver than anyone we have.

by Ewdtrey on Dec 8, 2009 9:25 PM EST up reply actions

I'd rather have Henne than Garrard

Because of the upside. No offense, and yes this may sound biased but I think it’s a fair assessment, but Garrard has reached the majority of his upside. Henne is far from doing so.

I also wanted to point out that Jacksonville SHOULD play the Colts better than we did.. we had the ball for 45 minutes and lost. Besides, J-ville is a division rival of the Colts. Hell, we lost the Bills so what does that tell you about playing division rivals?

The Jets were “impossible to run on” and we ran down their throats. A healthy Jake Grove (and OL in general) allows us to at least perform decently well against a run defense as great as yours is.

Having said that, Ricky will not beat you. Henne will not beat you. Our receiving corps and our defense will not beat you. All of these units have to play cohesively as a team for us to beat you, and I think the importance of these final four games (as well as the emotional effects of a win over New England, a.k.a. renewed fire and intensity) will provide us with the means of doing so to our fullest potential. Hartline and Bess are really starting to step up and develop scary chemistry with Henne, and his ability to let go of mistakes and throw the next pass perfectly to keep the team going is just awesome to watch. Don’t underestimate our receiver corps or you will regret it.

I am worried about this game though, to be honest. There’s the possibility of an emotional hangover that leads us to actually having less fire in this game. I just have to doubt that to be the case, as I see our fans coming out in full force to support us in a crucial away game.

I’m going to say 28-24, Miami.

Henne may

have more upside, but for this game I would rather have Garrard at this stage in their careers. I don’t think the majority of the public really knows what Garrard’s upside is. We haven’t had a good OL since 07 when he had a QB rating of 102.2, and that was receivers that aren’t even in the league anymore(Matt Jones, Reggie Williams) if that’s an indictment of how bad they were and they were better when they were cut than they were in 07.
I like Henne, but right now he’s not as good in the pocket/running the ball, he doesn’t have as strong an arm, and he’s not as accurate, and most of all he doesn’t have as much experience as Garrard. All that aside in the future, if he learns to dissect defenses like the greats(Peyton, Brady, Brees, etc) he could be better than Garrard.

by Ewdtrey on Dec 8, 2009 11:04 PM EST up reply actions

For THIS game?

I agree. I take Garrard as well. I was talking future, though.

He has the potential to be more accurate that Garrard, but is too inconsistent right now for you to believe a “biased” fan. He makes pin-point, no margin-of-error passes sometimes, and lobs the ball over Polite’s head others. When he learns to work out the kinks and polishes his “touch”, he will be as accurate (if not more than) as David.

He doesn’t have as strong an arm as Garrard? Honest question man, have you seen Chad play? Not being condescending, truly wondering. Chad Henne doesn’t HAVE a cannon, he IS a cannon. The ball just burns a hole through his receivers hands, and that’s why Ginn doesn’t catch balls anymore.

Experience, yes, that’s a given. He’s already shown the potential to be a surgeon having dissected the Jets top pass defense (granted with running game support) earlier in the year. And I mean, let’s be honest; a first-year starter showing the things he’s showing is beyond impressive. Garrard is better right now, don’t get me wrong. I just don’t see that being the case once Chad’s experience becomes more significant.

Obviously you have a point and a case regarding the possibility that Garrard’s upside is unknown and understated/underestimated. And obviously, no one will ever know. But I do think that a Mike Sims-Walker/Torry Holt/Mike Thomas 1-2-3 is solid enough for us to be able to gauge that fairly well. To be honest, his 100+ QB rating season may be attributable to teams not having seen him enough, via film or live action.

I don’t think Henne is miles and miles behind Garrard even now, and our receivers.. well, quite frankly, they blow on NFL standards.

But in this game, yeah, I of course take Garrard. The dual-threat (running) alone makes him more dangerous.

No one talks about Garrard's

arm strength, but the more you watch him the more you realize his 50 yd passes are just flicks of the wrist for him.
And yes I’ve seen Henne’s arm and I know to continue this argument is almost useless because it’s had to debate because there is very little that’s tangible that can be used to make an argument. Anyhow check out this pass:
http://www.nfl.com/videos/nfl-cant-miss-plays/09000d5d81214115/Pre-WK-2-Can-t-Miss-Play-Garrard-goes-deep
He’s on his own 18 yd line and nearly hits Troy Williamson on the opposing 15. And I’ve seen him throw nearly that deep of a pass on a line before.

by Ewdtrey on Dec 8, 2009 11:50 PM EST up reply actions

Heck just in this last game

I saw him throw 2 deep outs on a line WHILE being plastered by a couple defensive linemen.

by Ewdtrey on Dec 8, 2009 11:57 PM EST up reply actions

Oh not trying to argue,

simply discussing the merits of our respective quarterbacks.

That is an arm and a half in that video. I think Henne’s right there with him on strength, his deep ball does need work though.

And like I said, Garrard is better right now. But hey, should be a great showing of Florida signal-callers. Good luck to both sides.

and eventhough it didn’t help our wildcard chances I’m glad you guys beat the Patriots.

As a Fins fan that was a bit harsh Tonyy

He is a bit biased as are all the Fins fans….to include myself. My biggest fear is the Dolphins propensity to play up or down to the level of competition (See the games vs TB, Carolina, Buffalo for the bad side of that….or the Saints, Indy, and NE for the good side of that).

Keep in mind that we got blown out by Buffalo and came within a FG of losing to TB.

Should be a good game

I am just hoping that both teams bring their A games and play hard. I hate sloppy games and games where there are mass penalties and turnover.

I think

It will be a very big game.
The broadcasting crew of the Jags radio team said yesterday; if they could choose 1 game a year to go to a home game-this is it.
I think it will be a reeeeally big battle beween the 2 teams!

What are the odds Jacksonville takes Tebow in the draft?

Nope

our Gm is ruthless and doesn’t care how much money you’re making, or what school you went to or what anyone else thinks. He will draft according to talent and character only. And frankly Tebow doesn’t have the talent to be a first round talent.

by Ewdtrey on Dec 9, 2009 1:18 AM EST up reply actions

Tebow = ticket sales

and that’s the only bottom line that matters for most owners.

It won't matter who they bring in...

… Jacksonville is a hole of a town and there’s much apathy in the people. Too many years rootin for Atlanta…

… up there, it’s basically lower Georgia…

… there’s no Jaguars in the US, where would they go…. South America?

Does any lions live in Detroit (besides in the Zoo?)

or any Tigers in Ohio? (That was a stupid point; if I can say this)

Jaguars will stay in Jville I think. If this team goes to the playoffs next year I think we have less problems then this year.

I know... just jerkin around... lol

I hope all that talk about movin, is just rumors. I really dislike owners moving their teams around. The Jaguars have been solid enough… had some decent names in players at RB, OL, WR/TE, etc… and some recognizable names but weren’t spectacular. Good coaching too.

They’ve just been in a shallow slump and fans want above average NOW. Gotta remember too, this is still a new team and the fan base continues to grow. I don’t think it HAS to be Tebow…. any great name at any position will do [I think]…

Btw, this game on Sunday is a playoff game… win or the looser stays home!

Actually we have starting planning how to bring all the

Georgia Tech fans into our fold with the draft selection of Junior Safety Morgan Burnett. :)

Tebow will not destroy the team, if anything the fanbase would remain the same and our fate prolonged but if some kind of a miracle occured we’d benefit from it. That said, I hope Tebow falls to the 3rd round and we can get him. Whether that’s wishful thinking or not, We’ll have to see.

Let me clarify something...

We aint playing for no “Wildcard” you are!
We playing for The AFC east , we have that luxry.
You have no choice, you will be sitting at home watching the “Wild Card” games!!!

by acme20000 on Dec 10, 2009 9:44 AM EST reply actions

You playing for the AFC east but I still favour the Pats to the title

(if the Jags can defeat them on week 16 may do a favour to the Phins too…)
And by the way although I think the Dolphins has a pretty good chance to go in; there is no guarantee hat MIami will play agains in the postseason (although Sparano’s 5-0 December record is reeeeealy impressive)!

Life without knowledge is death in disguise

by Zoltan from Budapest on Dec 10, 2009 11:04 AM EST up reply actions

You are wrong....we want them in the Wild Card game

Best case scenario is that we beat the JAGS, then the JAGS beat the Patriots and win out the rest of their games while we win out the rest of our games. That would give the JAGs the Wild Card game and we would take the East (providing we win out as well)

I would much rather play the Jags in the playoffs than the Ravens or the Patriots.

by Vanman_FishFan13 on Dec 10, 2009 11:56 AM EST up reply actions

That's the reason

why I think the Colts let us win next wek; if the Jags will win on SUnday. They want us not that 2 AFC North team in the playoffs.

We will see

Let you guys win?

I don’t know that there is a team out there that will let a team win. I believe that they may have a preference….but I guarantee that they won’t “LET” anyone beat them.
