Realistic Draft Expectations.
It's very early and the combine will pull some guys ahead of others but, at the pace were on now you can get a pretty good idea of where we will be drafting (looks like somewhere between pick 15-25). Sooo eliminate the dez bryant's and ndamukong suh's of the world and lets see who we want repping our 2010 first round rights.
* Arrelious Benn, WR, Illinois - STUD STUD STUD... god awful offense at illinois holds him back but, real potential to develop fast enough to make immediate payoff. I love this pick but fear a strong combine will bump him up out of reach.
* Terrance Cody, NT, Alabama - Not the direction id like to go in with it, but hes got the size and motor to be fergs replacment but, i just don't see the dominance that could be get elsewhere with this pick.
* Mardy Gilyard, WR, Cincinnati - Raw talent, huge upside. Gamer and exciting to watch but may take a little more time to develop then were looking for.
* Taylor Mays, S, USC - Stretchhh to say he lasts this long on the board because of his athletic talents and size but, some rumors of his football iq or lack there of in inner circles have him falling down some boards. Either way if you can get a saftey with his potential...you take it.
* Rolando McClain, LB, Alabama - football player, leader, talks with his play. everything channing crowder isn't but i dont see where he fits into our defense being he's projected as a OLB in the 3-4. Tuna will want a more explosive pass rusher with that pick.
* Sergio Kindle, OLB, Texas - More the player we would pick to be the OLB. explosive pass rusher with size and speed to back it up...I hate the idea of drafting an OLB pass rusher though because i feel Cameron Wake will be "the answer" next year for it and DT,WR,S,and TE are bigger needs.
* Golden Tate, WR, Notre Dame - If he comes out he will FLY up draft boards. He's tough, loves contact, fights for the ball, has the frame to bulk up,speed to outrun, and jumping ability to make up for small height. He is everything that ted ginn isn't but, does have some drops. I have a close friend that coaches at a big east college program and his opinion along with many others is that whoever gets this guy is getting a pure football player in every sense of the word. Also used to be a running back and could easily work into the wildcat. If he comes out and is available, me like.
* Jermaine Gresham, TE, Oklahoma - ANIMAL. Big play talent at the position with size and speed to match. Injuries scare you and blocking skills are raw but the upside is huge. this offense needs a dominant tight end and if our other needs are taken before our pick instead of trading down or settling for a lesser player, take this guy because he will be a monster.
Those are just some food for thought but, i love the draft and love hearing what you guys think so lets hear about it!!!

You dont even know your own team
Epps is the better TE in Miami.. He was in the same recruiting class at Martellus Bennett and Jermicael Finley. That is the Miami te we need to get. Not some 1 year ex-basketball player

Golden Tate!
If this kid comes out we need to get him. I went to see Notre Dame against Navy (as a mid) and the kid is unbelievable. He is a player who has amazing hands. we gotta get him
Great names on this list

Benn!!!
Living in Illinois I was super excited when the trifecta decided to go with Vontae. He has not disappointed. Benn is formed from the same mold as Davis, except he plays on the other side of the ball. He is tough, gritty, and he hustles not to mention he has tremendous size and skill when it comes to catching the ball. Also great in the kick return game if he is on the board wherever the phins pick I say go get him.
Oh yeah...
Tate – 5’11" 195lbs.
Gilyard – 6’1" 187lbs.
BENN – 6’2" 220lbs. Absolute Beast and I’m willing to bet he is just as fast as the other 2 at the combine.
I'll take Dez Bryant or Damian Williams over all of them.
I don’t think either of those 3 are number 1’s

I like his size/speed set.
If I had to pick a receiver for us to draft right now, I’d look for Benn. I also really like Bryant and Williams.

I’m worried about the drops, but because I didn’t see much of him, I don’t know if they are Braylon Edwards-esque, or due to poorly thrown balls by Juice.

Good point
I’ve seen Benn just about every Saturday (the one perk to living in Illinois, I suppose) and he’s got game-breaking talent. I haven’t seen him drop too many passes, but I know he’s nowhere near approaching Braylon Edwards territory.
I just want a go-to receiver. Anyone else think Hartline’s starting to look like a #2? He doesn’t have great wheels, but it seems like he gets open and produces good YAC.
President of the Jake Long #77 fan club!
Yes
Hartline, Bess, Camarillo are all solid 2’s. Ginn would probably be a decent number 2 across from a stud, because he wouldn’t see another safety in his life. All in all, a number 1 bumps everybody down a notch on the depth chart, and our WR corps suddenly looks pretty good.

forget about gresham!
fasanos back and he’s not going anywhere. he’s a good tight end now and hes, going to get better. remember when he was with the cowboys he was playing behind whitten so he never saw the ball. so last year with us was really his first full year . remember the jet game in the corner of the end zone ..that catch buried the jets and ended their season.we need to get some really good blockers on the o line then you’ll see fasanos numbers go way up
lol i mean it might be biased with your name
but i agree, I dont think we’ll pursue gresham. Yes, he’s good, but TE isn’t a GLARING need. He’s a type of player like Pettigrew on Detroit, which IMO is NOT worth your first round pick. Any of these guys would be more needed.

The funny thing is a lot of the players mentioned here aren't first-round locks
Except for McClain. He’s likely a top 10 pick at this juncture. I’ll be praying that he somehow falls to us.
As for Taylor Mays, I’ll bet he wishes he came out last season. He’ll probably go at the end of the first round unless he runs that supposed 4.2 he did during a USC practice. We’ll see, but I have him going near the later stages of round one (think: Dallas).
I am definitely on the Benn bandwagon. I think he’ll be available in round two unless he shows up to the combine and runs a route tree that blows up the heads of scouts Scanners-style.
Golden Tate has a lot of Percy Harvin in him, which will probably get him drafted a lot higher than he should. If he goes to Indy in February and runs a solid 4.4, he’ll be right smack in the middle of the first round. I like Tate a lot, but I am not sure Parcells will.
Ah, and then there’s Terrence Cody. Sweet Terrence Cody. If the college season had ended last week, Cody would’ve slipped to the second round. And even though he didn’t even have that great of a game against Florida (getting blocked one-on-one is never a good thing for a two-gap NT), Cody gets to finish out his college career on the biggest stage, which could very well propel his massive ass back into the first round.
Sergio Kindle is an outstanding OLB, but I feel like we already have a player like that in Cam Wake. Still, Kindle would thrive in our defensive scheme, and he’s one of the three best edge-rush linebackers in this draft.
Mardy Gilyard is one of my favorite players in this draft. I’d love to see that guy in Miami, but he is like a faster Davone Bess: great hands; shifty, effective route runner who always seems to get open.
I think Gilyard will probably come in at 5’11 at the combine. I’d be shocked if he were really over 6 foot.
Great post. I love draft stuff, especially when you see how good the Dolphins are going to get better and better as the seasons progress.

TATE DECLARES FOR DRAFT.
no more speculation on that end at least. he and clausen will enter the draft.
Forgetting a few people
Very good chance that IFFF we don’t make the playoffs we could end up with a chance to take a guy like Dez Bryant that I personally think is substanially better than Benn. If possible but there is no way of knowing unless it happens, i say take a ILB like Mcclain and wait on Benn for the second round but I doubt he’d be available considering there aren’t that many top wr’s in this draft.
Gilyard is very similar life Lafell and aren’t no. 1 type wide receivers, don’t have the body or the outstanding skills for it.
Tate IMO will be a slot receiver when he comes to the NFl and we already have one of the best in the NFL at that position.
Mcclain i would welcome with open arms, hoping he drops a little, Kindle also is extremely taleneted, maybe they could stick him as ILB depending on his size and how he works out. Spikes i’m not huge of but he doest have talent.
I agree with a previous post that Cody will ot be a stud and just someone occupying that space, but won’t draw double teams. Reminds me of a Glen Dorsey but a little bigger and not as dominating.
Overall, I would say we are def going LB or WR with my personaly opinion LB.
REMEMBER, players fall not because of talent but because of need. Based on where teams are drafting, not many besides Carolina and Baltimore will likely take a WR and Carolina might use their first pick on a QB so I think its safe to say we will have a good selection when we get on the clock.
I’m hoping we pick Dez Bryant or Mcclain.
dez bryant will not make it out of the top 10.
and mcclain likley will not either. i posted this based on who may be available when we pick not on every player in the draft.
Are you just forgetting Dez Bryant's character issues?
SF took a gamble on Crabtree and his character issues and look how it turned out. Im willing to bet teams dont take that chance in the top 10
I probably know Judo! How many of you can make the same boast?
by Souwantmyname on Dec 7, 2009 2:23 PM EST up reply actions
okay lets say somehow he does fall...
if your worried about character, does that seem like someone this office will spend a first rounder on? a WR with attitude? i highly doubt but again i doubt it will even come up because i dont see him lasting that long. theresss alwayss the raiders lol
I actually think Bryant is the only receiver who is a top-20 lock right now
And I don’t think he really has character issues. He got burned on the Deion Sanders thing, but Bryant seems to be an ok kid who is a badass receiver.
I think we’ll wait until round two to draft a receiver. Damian Williams or Arrelious Benn could very easily fall to us in that round. I think Benn is the kind of receiver we’re looking for in Miami.
President of the Jake Long #77 fan club!
Golden Tate looks like a slot receiver
But he is a playmaker, which is something we really don’t have right now. I am not for drafting Golden Tate, but I am not saying no to him yet, either. I want to consider all of our options before deciding on anything.
President of the Jake Long #77 fan club!
Tate is a slower Percy Harvin
I’m not a big fan of Tate, because I don’t believe he can be a dominant WR at this level.

Bryant has no character issues
If you call character issues, someone who is trying to work out with the best of all time to try and get better and the NCAA suspended him because he lied about it, eventhough its not against the rules, then i wish every player on our team has character issues and the determination to get better like he has. Guy has produced non stop and is a garunteed playmaker and the best WR in the draft. Don’t forget Parcells took Keyshawn and Terry Glenn in the first rd. I said if we don’t make the playoffs we would be in the mid teens to draft and that leaves us we a good chances of one of those players I mentioned to fall since top players fall every year based on teams needs like I said before.
Every draft has players that get taken wayyy to high based on Combine numbers and teams reaching for certain players. This draft is no different and I personally think Mcclain or Bryant will be available when we pick if our pick is 15th or higher
To be fair, Parcells didn't take Keyshawn
He was with the Pats in ’96, and the only reason he took Terry Glenn was because Robert Kraft intervened.
President of the Jake Long #77 fan club!
if we draft a wr i want a tall one, no more 6 footers
lets be realistic, so rarely are there steve smiths of this world that at around 5 11 or 6 feet can do well. we need a tall receiver. even benn is only 6 foot 2. we need a to, randy moss, vincent jackson, marshall someone who is at least 6’3’’ or hopefully an inch or two more.

Size doesn't make a receiver....but it helps
Guys like Boldin aren’t 6’2 and up but it definitely helps and I agree with that…But 6’2 220 is a perfect build for a WR, anything taller is a luxury. Dez has perfect height…incase u forgotten a certain guy by the name of Chad Ochocino is only 6’1 as is Boldin and Reggie Wayne is 6’0 and Crabtree is 6’1…
bottom line…6’2 is just fine with me and given Bryant’s skills he more than makes up for an inch or two the way he plucks balls out of the air
Height can be compensated for if the WR has perfect timing and a good vert
for instance not many corners are gonna beat Anquan Boldin in the air for a jump ball. He is way to physical and aggressive for that to happen. He is also the WR I want Parcells to trade for.
I probably know Judo! How many of you can make the same boast?

Tate
Excellent WR, but the Fins have a WR corp full of his size and attributes. He may better then them all pure talent wise, but the Fins need some one to go up for the ball and out muscle CB for the first down.
The Patriots Suck
Well, the third time's the charm
I am two-for-two with our first round picks (I had us taking Jake Long as soon as he made it rain at the combine). And while we still need about another month before we can realistically predict the Dolphins’ 2010 draft, I’d like to think I have a decent idea of where we’ll go.
I think this will be the year where Parcells drafts a big-splash linebacker. There will likely be a lot of BAPS floating around when we pick, but I can see this FO sticking to the script and reinforcing our linebacker corps.
President of the Jake Long #77 fan club!
well for Benn
I think the rumor was he is staying for another year.
As for Gilyard, you could probably wait till the 2nd or 3rd to get him.

There is no way Tebow lasts past the First round.
For a team like Jacksonville who just can’t attract people into their stadium or as a whole to their Franchise and is in the brink of moving to another city, its a no brainer to bring in a local legend to boost up the interest. Feel fortunate though. That man is a gamer.

That'd be a really good matchup for him.
I do believe he can be successful in the NFL, but with A LOT of work. And what better way to develop than under the tutelage of one of the best QBs and Head Coach in the last decade, not to say Charlie Weiss as the OC. Plus, they have that stupid first round pick from Oakland so they can take the risk.
McCain
if there will be the pick. Dez will be available at 18 or so BUT I dont see him being the choice unless all LBers Parcells likes are gone
Confidence breeds success, self-doubt breeds failure
McClain could happen
It all depends on the stupidity of people picking in front of us. A lot of people think Buffalo would take him, but I think they’ll be looking to build their trenches.
If McClain is there, it’s a slam-dunk. He’s the kind of player we’re missing on defense. If he’s not, Parcells could roll the dice on Brandon Spikes or a NT. I expect a linebacker, though. We NEED an inside linebacker. Watching Akin Ayodele in coverage is a sobering experience.

I would take everybody
except Benn, McClain, and Kindle off that list. As in take them off the list, not take them in the draft. I just don’t see the upside with Cody. He’s a mess, and he can’t go more than 2-3 plays without sucking wind on the sidelines. Tate isn’t number 1 WR material IMO, and we don’t need more number 2’s. I also don’t really like Gilyard that much, I’m not sure he’s the type of athlete that can dominate single coverage. Gresham shouldn’t be on our radar because I don’t believe TE is that high on the list of draft needs. If we want a TE, I think we should look at Epps from UM later in the draft.
And don’t get me started on Taylor Mays. He’s the Vernon Gholston of this year’s draft, except many people are already starting to realize it. He’s an athletic freak with surprisingly little “football” skills. He’s a horrible tackler, instead going for the highlight-reel hit, which makes you look like an idiot in the NFL when you try that in the open field. He takes terrible angles in pursuit, and has terrible ball skills, which is a must for a FS. I wouldn’t touch him at all, because I think it’ll be a wasted pick.
Add to that list Damian Williams, Dez Bryant, Eric Berry (not gonna happen, but he’s on the list nonetheless lol), CJ Spiller, Jerry Hughes, and Von Miller (Hughes and Miller are both OLB’s that have the size to play on the strong-side, a position we need especially with JT starting to show his age and Roth toiling away in Cleveland).

yeah I think the way to go is McClain if he's there
Hughes/Miller/Kindle if he’s not, and make a trade for a legit WR. Try to keep the number 1 if we can, but I’m willing to throw it into a deal for AJohnson. I think we can afford to throw a few picks at the Texans to try and pry AJ out, because he fixes every problem on the offense at this point. Then we can focus on landing some middle round studs for the D, and bump up guys like Chris Clemons and Cameron Wake to solidify other positions.

If we don't land a #1 WR in free agency/via trade
I think Arrelious Benn is THE man to pick in the 1st round (assuming Bryant and McClain are gone). Benn reminds me a lot of Boldin. He is the type of receiver the Dolphins need: big, physical, yet still pretty fast (basically like Vontae Davis as a WR, go figure). I would then go with a NT in the second round, like Dan Williams from Tennessee or Terrence Cody. We can hold off on an drafting a stud linebacker for another year if need be. WR and NT are much bigger needs.
No we cant hold off on ILB's
We are truly dreadful in that one position. Its not a fluke every te we play dominates us. We have bad linebackers trying to cover them. Then we have linebacker/safeties helping over top. We will be okay on defense when we get either LB’s that can cover or safeties that can cover te’s 1 on 1. If they aren’t in the draft then we need to look in FA
I probably know Judo! How many of you can make the same boast?

All I"m saying is that WR and NT are bigger priorities, and we only have so many draft picks.
I’d love to land a stud LB as well if it works out.
And the only stud ILBs in the draft are McClain and Spikes
so if they’re gone by our pick, what other LBs are available that can cover well?
McClain will be gone, but Spikes should still be around
He’s currently a late-first round pick, and I don’t think he’s really a player who’s going to blow up the combine, so I expect him to stay somewhere in that area.
I’d rather address WR via free agency/trade and concrete our front seven with a new NT and ILB in this draft. Soliai’s a solid backup, but a guy like Dan Williams from Tennessee would really help blow up the trenches.
As of right now, I figure Denver will be the team that gets Rolando McClain. You can thank the Bears for that one.

We don't need to draft an ILB
there’s about 20 of them slated to hit FA that would instantly upgrade the position for us. Most notably are Karlos Dansby, Larry Foote, and DeMeco Ryans. We need to find a way to fill that spot in FA, and open the draft picks up to enable us to get a playmaker in round 1, a guy like Damian Williams, Dez Bryant, CJ Spiller, or Benn. Then, like kmb just said above me, Dan Williams from Tennesee could be the answer at NT, and could be available in round 2.
Or, by signing a LB in FA, you can now look to trade that first rounder for a true #1 WR. Trade back a few times in the middle rounds and stock up on picks, and find some sleepers like we seem to do every year. Now we have a stud at LB, a stud at WR, AND a new crop of rookies at need positions. We are close, only a few guys from being a serious contender, and I think it’s time to get aggressive this offseason and go out and get those guys. We’ve built a solid foundation through the draft and solid FA pickups/trades, I think this is the year to make a play at some superstars.

Definitely, good couple of points.
What do you think about Parcells making a play for a star NT? Say Vince Wilkfork or the guy from San Fran? Wouldn’t that be more Parcells like than going for a playmaker at WR? Just wondering what his history on the matter is.
Can't say I disagree
I am just going along with Parcells’ draft history. He likes those big-impact linebackers, but really hasn’t gone after that position since taking over as VP. You make a good point about the guys available in FA, though. It makes a ton of sense to eschew the LB in this draft if we can bring in a proven commodity. And if that’s the case, we’re free to drill the NT and WR positions. Hello, big play wideout!
I am going to get a pre-draft analysis thread tonight going after I get back from covering high school basketball. I want to separate the positions so we can stay focused on the aspects that pertain most to us.
I think we’ve got some really enlightened people here on this board.

I'd LOVE to go get a guy like Wilfork
but it seems that most 3-4 teams don’t let a NT walk unless they already have another one (see Dallas with Ferguson and Ratliff). And I do agree that Parcells would value a stud NT more than a stud WR, and would probably be willing to make a big trade for Wilfork over a WR any day. But he also can’t deny that WR has been our weakest position BY FAR this season, and he has to know that his guy Henne can really thrive with a true star outside, so it’s tough to say how Parcells feels right now. Good point though, and I wouldn’t be mad at all if we made a big play for a NT.
