Don't hate on the Pat White Pick

As this season has progressed a lot of people have started talking about the coming off-season and what our needs will be. While the obvious need for a number one wide receiver has been apparent all year, something that has recently started to gain interest is the need for a playmaking middle linebacker or an outside lb to replace the aging taylor and porter. While these concerns are valid and should be addressed in the coming draft, some posts have said that the pat white pick was a waste and he is already a bust. Its only his rookie season, you gotta give the guy a little break and let him work into the offense. While, Im still not a huge fan of wildpat, it gets me excited every time he is in the game. Sparano and co. wanted to keep the wildcat constantly updating and progressing to keep coaches on their toes. Also, if you look at the draft board, there is no one available at that spot. I guess you could say we trade down and get more draft picks but honestly at the positions we were looking for drafted in the second round after white : Clint Sintim (LB- NYG), Mohamed Massaquoi (WR-CLE), and Cody Brown (LB-ARZ, Injured Reserve). While we dont know anything about brown because of the injury, I dont think you can say there was a lot of value out there. Sintim has barely done anything, and Massaquoi its hard to tell cuz the browns are so terrible. Thus, just 12 weeks into the pat white experiment, I say give it some time as what were the other options.

I am happy with the pick

I think he has great potential and the intangibles are off the charts.
I am really disappointed by how the Trifecta is using Pat White.
In hindsight (which is utterly unrealistic), if the Trifecta were going to treat Pat White this way, I would have gone Massaquoi with the Pat White pick and Julian Edelman with the Nailbone pick.

I wasn't happy with the pick back in April and that hasn't changed...

The fact is, Pat White is now on the team and so regardless of my feelings on whether the pick was good, bad, or so-so, I want the guy to succeed & be a contributor to the teams goals.

I felt the way about Ginn but after 3 years I just don’t think he’s going to turn it around. With White, it is just his first year so he gets the benefit of the doubt for a while.

Would I rather have Massaquoi on this team rather than White right now? Yes I would rather have Massaquoi because it is a position of far, far greater need.

The fact is thou

gh, the pick is gone and it isn’t as if we can take a mulligan on it and pick someone else. What we should do is look back on our picks, why we picked the guys we did, what we thought their strengths/weaknesses were, how we thought they’d fit in VS. what’s turned out to be the case after the fact. Then use what we find to help refine the drafting approach for future picks.

Call it critical analysis if you will.

Pat's got skills.

Pat will be an integral part of the Dolphin game plan or will be traded for a WR. He was the best quarterback and one of the best athletes at his combine and there’s no argument about that. The world runs on instant gratification. Dynasties are built over time. I’m happy to have him because I’d rather have "The Robot 7" make some stars than pay for them.

A couple of points.

First of all, he could be the next Michael Vick for all I care but if you are a young rebuilding team, that already has a prospect franchise QB and a ton of needs at other positions, you don’t waste a 44 overall pick on a gimicky player, you just don’t.

Second, wow, I didn’t even remember Massaquoi was picked after White. That makes me really mad. Anyone who has watched that kid play on a truly horrendous offense and team know that the guy is a stud. He can play, plain and simple. On a team starving for WR production, we could’ve gotten excellent value out of him at that spot.

White is undersized by every standard for an NFL QB. He is also just not that good.

Yes he was good at the college level.. but so wasnt John Beck (and 10000’s of other college STARS) right?

Beck is what college is all about the spread offense. You cannot run the spread in the NFL and win. Its that simple. Sure in college he can take the snap and if there is not a run lane there throw it. That simply does not work in the NFL.

Pat White was not a good pick and every time he runs into the game I cringe just wating for him to blow a snap or fumble the ball.

Henne is now our leader. Lets see what the guy can do !

Liked it then...

hate it now.

I’d be more comfortable of putting White in…only if CP was the QB.

It was and is a truly terrible pick

The only way to salvage it is to transition White into a Randel El type at WR.. Give him a wr reverse pass every now and then and call it a career

I probably know Judo! How many of you can make the same boast?

That doesn't make much sense, why would you spend a 2nd on a guy

and trade him for a 4th or 5th one year later. Stick with him and let him develop

Sometimes you just have to admit you made a mistake and move on.

A blind man can see he’s not an NFL QB, really all he is right now, and this is the truth, is a gimmick player who sees a couple snaps a game and contributes almost nothing or is just a negative.

Take away the one of two plays he made this year, 33 yd run, and he has 13 carries for 17yds(1.3ypc), with 1 frst dwn and 1 fmbl and 0 of 3 passing.

Take away the other play he made, a 6 yd run, and now it’s 12 carries for 11 yds(0.9ypc) with 1 fmbl and 0 of 3 passing.

If we could get a 4th round pick for him I’d be ecstatic, let him be someone else’s project.

could not have been a worse pick

even if we had drafted arthur j. finkelstein from hargrove community accounting college.

I watched him in the combine

and he threw better than anyone there. All I thought was, too bad we already have a QB for the future. Now, he isn’t quite living up to some expectations, so I am not sure that pick was necessary. But, at the time we did not have a proven QB (Henne has done great now, but was an unknown). So, I still agree with the pick. It is unfortunate that it has turned out the way it has so far.

They need to get him the ball where he’s best with it. In a bit of space and the option to pass or run. Or downfiled on short passes and some space. Not many people hit him clean when he’s got room. The difference in the pros is that there’s no room inside and so it takes some creativity. I wonder about running the wildcat with Ricky taking the snap and White as the wildcat coming across the formation. The pass option is much more serious with White and the play is basically a run for the corner if you don’t pass. The option won’t work at the pro level very often. Today’s Pat package call was awful… very predictable and defenseable (as we saw).

I was fine with the pick overall. I think he’s a playmaker who isn’t used well in an offense that needs playmakers.

too early to say

tho i’m inclined to like the pick, not so far its use

by a1a on Dec 7, 2009 9:15 AM EST reply actions

Pat White was a waste

I don’t remember who else was available but Pat White is clearly too small to be an NFL QB. The Wildcat works because of Ronnie Brown. However it usefullness came out of necessity to be creative. Pat White will go down as a useless pick!
