Let's pretend we're the Dolphins' GM

A lot has been said this week about our play calling, receivers and linebackers, so it makes sense to have a post where we can compile a wish list of things we'd like to see done within our organization this offseason.

As much as I bleed aqua and orange, I know in my heart that we're still a year away from being a contender. We have holes to fill. Anyone who watched the shit show we put on in Buffalo knows that.I am not "giving up" on my team by saying that. If you think we could get into the playoffs and win on the road with our implosive receiving corps and mediocre linebackers, fine. But I don't see us becoming a championship-caliber offense or defense until we hook our franchise QB up with a playmaker wideout and draft franchise players at NT and LB.

Luckily for us, the 2010 draft is shaping up to be a defensive talent extravaganza. Parcells is notorious for taking high-profile linebackers, and guess what this draft is full of: linebackers. We're talking a shitload of them. It's almost gaudy how many edge-rushers and inside linebackers will be available.

It's also important to note that Tennessee's Dan Williams has basically surpassed Mt. Cody as the #1 NT prospect in this draft. I like the fact we have multiple NT to look at mainly because I was feeling a bit handcuffed by the fact that Cody was considered the best two-gap nose tackle in this class. Wake Forest's Boo Robinson is also a solid NT prospect.

Ok, I'll start. Here's what I would like to see happen this offseason:

1) Replace Paul Pasqualoni with Romeo Crennell

This subject hasn't sat well with all Dolphins fans, but I am to the point where I feel like our defensive has failed in spite of its talent. We have excellent rookie corners, yet you want to put them in man coverage with Randy Moss and Wes Welker and hope your pass rush consistently gets to Tom Brady? You're absolutely killing Drew Brees by running your safety at him from all angles, yet you call the dogs off in the third quarter when your offense is struggling?

I love the way our defense is shaping up into something phenomenal, but I would be remiss if I didn't admit I am not crazy about the guy running the show.

2) Do something about Dan Henning

I am touchier with this side of the ball, just because I am not sure how wise it would be to completely upend our staff. That said, I wouldn't lose sleep if we greased him and brought in either David Lee, or swung for the fences with someone like Charlie Weis (providing he doesn't return back to the Belicheat lodge).

If you like Henning's play calling, more power to you, but I personally think he's holding us back. There's no reason to run a bunch of trickeration when you are running it down a defense's gullett, and there's no reason to take your shit-hot QB off the field because you want Ricky Williams to throw the ball.

Simply put, Henning drives me nuts.

3) Anchor that 3-4

Jason Ferguson is 34 and Paul Soliai looks lost at times (though I had high hopes for him), so it's inevitable we're going to draft a nose tackle in 2010 ... and that's fine by me. A lot of people were pissed we didn't draft a NT last year, but judging by the upgrade in positional talent that will be available in 2010, it's easy to understand why the Trifecta put off drafting a nose tackle.

Dan Williams is currently my #1 guy at this position.

4) Draft a franchise linebacker already!

I spent a lot of time last offseason thinking 2009 might be the year we get our guy at linebacker, and I am right back to that way of thinking for 2010. I like Rolando McClain A LOT, but I seriously doubt he'll make it out of the top 10.

And then you have eye gouger extraordinaire Brandon Spikes, who has gotten lost a bit amongst all the McClain hype. I like Spikes, and would be thrilled if we drafted him. And before anyone starts complaining about the idea of taking him in the first round, rest easy: I have him falling into round two.

My sleeper ILB in this draft is Micah Johnson out of Kentucky. He can rush the quarterback, stop the run and drop back into coverage, but has had a somewhat quiet 2009 season. If we've made it to round three without drafting a linebacker, I'd say we're headed in this guy's direction.

5) Fix the f'n wideout corps

It's not really fair to expect Chad Henne to come out and lead us to fourth quarter comebacks when his receving corps doesn't instill fear in opposing secondaries. Davone Bess has looked GREAT the last few games, and he's turning out to be the slot receiver ace we were hoping for, but we've gotta find a guy who can separate and make plays. And I don't want to hear about Ted Ginn possibly being that guy -- his hands (or lack of) have almost completely negated his game-changing speed.

I'd like to see the Dolphins bring in Anquan Boldin and then draft a young guy (Mike Williams, Arrelious Benn, Etc.) to learn under him.

I'd also like to package Ted Ginn with another player and ship them off for an extra pick or two.

These are just my opinions about what we need to do this offseason. I want to hear what you guys think we should do.

I Agree witht the wideouts but i think either we'll get Rolando Mclain in the First round or the best OLB available only because Takeo Spikes to me looks like a trouble maker and BP don't like that

Takeo? Doesnt he play for the bengals are somebody?

Lol I know you meant Brandon. And when was the last time you saw a guy do something dirty in a pileup? If you watched football last weekend then you saw it happen, even if you didnt know it. The fact is, all of them do it, Spikes just got caught. And give the man some credit for benching himself to show his team that he was truly sorry for what he did.

Spikes can do his draft stock a favor if he has his helmet up Mark Ingram's ass for most of the SEC championship

It’s too bad Carlos Dunlap went all “Tony LaRussa” earlier this week. I think Florida’s defense, as a whole, is much better when Dunlap is on.

Wait...

…so you drop the “Belicheat” line, but you propose that you hire the two coordinators from that era?

I wouldn't take it so literally

“Belicheat” sounds hilarious, but I don’t think Spygate really had too much to do with the Pats winning three titles.

I really think he’ll end up back with you guys.

I do want Crennel, though.

Great post, but I’m not a fan of Bodin as a #1. I love the way he plays, but I think we can pick up a more legitimate #1 (someone in the mold of a V. Jackson) – if we’re making that effort. In RD 1, we almost certainly have to go ILB, WR, or OLB. If McClain isn’t available, we look to see if Bryant if available; if Bryant isn’t available, we have to see if there’s a big-time talent at OLB. Then, if all of our 1st RD hopes are crushed, maybe we consider Dan Williams.

The depth of the draft, though, is exciting. We may well be able to draft McClain in the 1st and Cody (with Williams overtaking his #1 spot at NT) in the 2nd. If we’re able to secure a WR via free agency, I’d love to go ILB and OLB or ILB and NT in the first two rounds – then pick up a big talent that’s maybe fallen (like the kid from Syracuse) in the later rounds.

We wake & blunder on, / wiser, on the whole, / but not more accurate.

I like Jackson, but the Bolts would be nuts to let that guy get away via FA

I know Malcolm Floyd is similar to Jackson and has really come on this season, but I think the Chargers conceded earlier this season that Chris Chambers and Buster Davis weren’t the receivers they were going to structure their offense around. Who knows, though. Stranger things have happened.

I like the ex-Orangeman receiver a lot. He’s my sleeper wideout in this draft.

you know what?

i have never liked T.O. however, that may not be such a bad idea. he’s still dangerous with a decent qb. i know parcells and him don’t really get along, but at this point he’s starting to look decent. i still don’t think i’d want him, but then again, maybe.

LOL noway

We have a few options

We could go draft or trade as I’m sure Arz will try and get rid of Boldin since Breaston and Doucet are both playing well along side Larry Fitz but i really don’t think Parcells will give up high picks and the ravens probably will and Arz has no use for a guy like Ginn to package in.

I think Vincent or Brandon Marshall are both amazing and would die for either of those to be in Miami but realistically they aren’t going anywhere. Both offenses would be a mess without those guys.

So that leaves us probably going after someone via Draft. I could see Parcells possibly packaging a player and trading up (not giving up extra picks) or like someone said previously giving ginn up for picks.

Do I see BP taking Bryant first RD..honestly, NO…do I wish he would and would I be happy if he did, Yes!…I honestly never been so sure of a WR then him. He has no weaknesses and like i’ve said previously and most of you might know this that I’m huge on this guy is that he’s doing the right things by working out with former greats to learn the ins and outs of being a great wide receiver just like desean jackson, ochocinco, sidney rice, and many more.

I really think the only chance we take an OLB is if we drop Joey Porter’s salary which is very possible. I really see us getting rid of him and Gibril and freeing up a lot of money and bringing back JT for probably a two year deal to finish as a dolphin. He has shown he is playing well and at his natural position would be producing much better numbers.

Ultimately, we never know what Parcells is going to do, but DOOOO expect him to draft a LB if not a couple and a NT. If i’m not mistaken Wilfork and Casey Hampton are free agents but I could be wrong.

NE made cap room for Wilfork by trading Seymour

It might hae happened still if 2nd round pick Ron Brace came on but sadly for us this has not happened.. Reuniting Wilfork in Miami would be great

Don't Draft A NT High If At All!

Drafting NT’s in the 1st or 2nd rounds is a wasted pick! They are part time players and you don’t use high picks for part time players. Why are they part time players? Because they don’t rush the passer! On most 3-4 defenses, the NT is on the field for around 50% of the defensive snaps because of down and distance and personnel packages. Plus the league is much more of a passing league than a running league, so why would you take a position with a high draft choice that has no effect on defending the pass? If you want a NT get one in FA or after round 4.

I want LB’s in the 2010 draft. Lots of LB’s. I don’t care if it is ILB or OLB, I just want better players at those positions that what the phins have now. The Front Office had an opportunity to draft LB’s in the ‘09 draft and chose not too (I wanted Rey Maualuga instead of Davis and Paul Kruger instead of White). If this years class of LB’s is strong, then they better get more than one this year.

Don't underestimate the value of a NT...

…Vince Wilfork, Kris Jenkins and more. The centerpieces of the 3-4 are taken early and those are the defenses that usually work out.

by Richard Hill on Dec 4, 2009 5:22 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Maualuga wold have been a terrible pick in the 1st.. We got the corner that was 1st on everybodies draft board

I do happen to agree on the Paul Kruger pick though. I was shocked he fell to the 2nd round . The guy had a big frame and great motor. You can teach him the rest.

Also sack master Clint Sintim was available in the 2nd. He is a Jason Taylor clone but no. We took a QB that plays 4 snaps a game… Value man value

I am with you CT

I wanted Mathews at 1 and rey rey at 2 when there. To draft a NT in 1st is wrong 2nd maybe more likely 3rd or later give me LBs hell I wouldnt mind starting 2 or even 3 rookies there next yr with Crowder shrugs

ANTONIO BRYANT

answer for WR… get him and ginn won’t have any pressure and he will shine.

i dont want to draft a WR i want to go out and get one. Screw rebuilding… we are only a few positions away from being a top notch team in this league. Let’s get a proven playmaker, up our defense, and win.

I agree with you there...

I think we should continue to build through the draft, we need a solid LB through the draft, doesn’t have to be 1st rounder but someone who can give either Ayodele or Crowder a break and not lose any ground. We also need to build our O-Line some more. Obviously over 90 mil in guaranteed money does not buy you domination, so continue to get guys who can play multiple positions on the line.

With FA, we will pick up a WR. I don’t think we will pick up a big name receiver, but we have to pick someone who is looking to take a #1 spot from another team. My ideas are..

1) Dwayne Bowe
2) Malcom Floyd

Or at least these type of receivers. They can play the position well, and stretch the field if Ginn is gonna run a underneath route. Also, I’m pretty sure that we will take a look at the RB spot. Sorry, but Williams is out in another year, and Ronnie is on IR going into his contract year. Don’t think we will let Ronnie go, but we have to entertain the idea because I like Cobbs and Hilliard but I don’t see franchise backs out of these guys. I see good support backs.

I’m glad we didnt trade for him mid season.. that suspension after just bringing the guy in would have been bad. Makes me think the trifcta knew his this was coming and chose to wait it out

I'd like a play making TE as well

Tony Scheffler is in a contract year, is underutilized, is not happy with Denver, and causes all kinds of mismatches. The only downside is his blocking ability.

He may come cheap and would be great for our many two TE sets.
