Post-Game Thread: Embarrassing first half costs Dolphins

[Editor's Note: I'm posting this from my phone so it's going to be short.]

It was nice to see this team recover and play well in the second half. But it was too little too late as the Dolphins fall 27-20. And when the Dolphins wonder why they won't be in the postseason this year, they have nobody else to blame but themselves. These last two weeks cost the Dolphins big time.

Use this thread to talk about today's game. Please refrain from making additional fanposts about the game - that's what this post is for. And please keep this post profanity-free.

Look for the usual game recap post later tonight. Enjoy the rest of your football Sunday.

We beat ourselves … how do you fix that ???? almost all of our loses this season have been self done .. we never get beat but constantly beat ourselves .. ouch

by markus_13 on Dec 27, 2009 4:15 PM EST reply actions

Well, for now

We’re still… somehow… in this thing. NYJ and DEN have to lose. Let’s get on it and prepare for the Steelers next week that’s all we can hope for now.

by TheZ on Dec 27, 2009 4:15 PM EST reply actions

ypu

…that’s true. but that’s 1 loss. Not 8. Imagine where we’d be if we didn’t consistently beat ourselves.

there is still hope

jets lose to indy or cinci
jacksonville loses to cleveland
baltimore loses to oakland

we beat the steelers

lets pray for an incredibly weird wild card spot at 8-8

Sparano

I still say Sparano choked when the moment came….Sure the team was down…but they fought hard and came back…..only to have him decide on a gutless call that resulted in us having to use our timeouts. I’m speaking about punting on 4th and 4.

I think Sporano needs a better staff

He is solid and the team plays hard for hi, This team overachieved both of his years. Ronnie, Fergie and Cobbs going down was huge. I do wish we kept London over Turner

Jax lose to Cleveland?

C’mon folks, weve known for a couple of weeks that we were pretenders this season. Play hard against Pittsburg, wrap this up and go get us some offensive weapons and younger defensive players.

8-8 is a victory at this point!

AMEN

That is the most accurate assessment I’ve heard yet.

Denver's gonna get beat down

We’re not done yet! I think the real hitch in this (besides us having to WIN when we’re supposed to) is that JAX needs to lose to the Browns next week… that’s a pretty tall order.

by TheZ on Dec 27, 2009 4:19 PM EST reply actions

Face it, Dolphins ARE NOT a playoff team

Even if we magically back into the playoffs despite the bad losses these past 2 weeks…its not like we have a chance of going anywhere. Dolphins are PRETENDERS not CONTENDERS.

by goheat on Dec 27, 2009 4:19 PM EST reply actions

Just like last year.

It was fun winning a few, but we are clearly 3 years away. Lex Hilliard looked good and our rookie CBs played decent. That’s a start.

I'm talking solid SB contender...not get into the wildcard.

We have alot more needs than just receiver. We need to replace Porter and get a true free safety.

That sounds funnu

I know Porter isn’t a Safety, I meant replace porter with a young stud and also get a true free safety.

I think Detroit can be a contender in 3 years

I think the dolphins with a miracle amazing Tom Brady type pick at like FS and a good FA WR we can be a contender next year (1st round ILB, 2nd OLB 3rd NT, 4th FS (would have to be incredible), etc..
With a great draft i’d say 2 years.

well and you dont use refs calls as an excuse

but for goodness sakes, that TD would have made it 27-17 in the 3rd quarter and brought the house down. I am almost 100% sure we win the game if that TD stands. Yet the ticky tack call brings it back

by metalhead86 on Dec 27, 2009 4:21 PM EST up reply actions

i have to disagree with the whole thing of us losing ourselves

ya could clearly see the NFL is rigged if every time we get momentum either with the Chris Brown fumble or the Ted Ginn td they call it dead or penalize us. No matter what we do the Refs make sure we lose and even though we fell behind by 27 we came back strong and i would like to thank the Dolphins for their effort, but a couple of calls from the refs and there goes the season.

Not true though...Remember the Redskins fumble in OT?

The whistle was blown dead and he was considered “down by contact” and they ended up saying it was a fumble and recovered by the saints even though the whistle blew….

a strangely early whistle in any event, if that is even the issue

What's Wrong

The coaching killed us in the first half. If Jake Grove could play why not start. Henne will not learn touch. He never had any at Michigan and is stubborn as a mule. I’m even questioning Sparono at this point.

I would worry about Henning moreso than Sporano. I love his fire.

Fact is this is a young team. Seems all of you want Rome to be built in a day, it does not work that way.

Another fact is we could go 8-8 or 7-9 with the toughest schedule in football. That still makes us better than the 11-5 team from last year that had the easiest schedule

NFL Referees

I am usually not one to complain or make “excuses” about bad calls, but these aren’t excuses. It’s pretty ridiculous these past two weeks being able to honestly say the refs stole the game. First that “incomplete” bull shit call where they couldnt review even though they know chris brown caught the ball made 3 football moves and fumbled. Then to top it off, the “tripping” call after the ginn td pass. what the hell is that all about? 1) It was obvious that wasnt intentional and didnt affect the play, the defender tripped over lousaka’s leg and what is lousaka supposed to do to avoid that? and 2) how exactly do the referees determine that was intentional tripping? can they read polite’s mind? I feel cheated

Hold on

Keep it in perspective, Our O-line did great. We were set up to be a power running team and that is just what we were doing until Ronnie went out. Look at the Carolina game, those guys were shifting all over the place and Ricky ran all over them. I’m angry and so is everyone else, but the issue on offense is the receiving corps. We lack a weapon. If we had a solid deep threat that could stretch the field Ricky and Ronnie would hold up because they wouldn’t have to run 60 times a game. Also a serious receiving threat would pull 1 or 2 men out of the box so the line could block man-up and not with a constant Safety or LB blitz. None of our receivers need double coverage and LBs can cover Hartline most of the time.

8-8 is a victory at this point!

We're no mathematically eliminated

Also, you guys have to realize that in officials are human so they have natural bias. Even though it’s not fair they’re always going to give the calls to the team that’s winning not the team that’s losing.

Another thing, the dolphins loss this game not the refs giving the game to the Texans. This team is had finally shown with this game that they’re a pretender not a contender. Giving up 24 unanswered points is inexcusable.

I seriously understood bias in the tennesee games

you value cheating over honesty fair enough you want your team to win
I don’t understand why the Home team can’t get calls their way.
Woudln’t they want to be bias towards the losing team so that it becomes more exciting?

by Gamer2102 on Dec 27, 2009 4:41 PM EST up reply actions

it's just reality and it works both ways

If the dolphins were 24 points the refs would give calls to the dolphins. You have to understand it works both ways. Also, you have to factor in that the dolphins were half assing it most of the games and the Texans came in with a chip on their shoulders.

Who are you going to side with in you natural bias a team that’s just going through the motions or a team that came in knowing what’s at stake and going gang busters. The refs didn’t give the game to the Texans the dolphins did. Look at the last play of the game. There were dolphins just standing around looking at a rookie convert a 3 and 4 with ease. That was the whole freaking game in a nutshell.

by jesavius on Dec 27, 2009 5:01 PM EST up reply actions

the team with the most points gets the best calls? that's how reality works? ha!

c’mon, the fumbled pass call and the polite call shouldn’t be explained away jesuitically as natural bias. they were over the top inexcusable. we want and expect fair calls from pro refs whose job it is to be fair!

by a1a on Dec 27, 2009 5:35 PM EST up reply actions

Ah, so it is ok for Polite to LEG SWEEP other players.

It’s just anyone else in the league that should be called for that I suppose.

fair enough...but the call is made texan fan in a context for us dolfans after a week

in tennessee where players (solali) and others were flagged for minimal contact , while replays showed far worse on all sides.
to get flagged on two central plays in the game (a turnover we should have gotten from you that was clearly a fumble — or do you disagree?, and a more marginal call that came on a touchdown pass).
i watched a texan lineman drag back jason taylor with two hands while he was in pursuit, no call.
did you feel the officiating was fine today?

by a1a on Dec 27, 2009 6:05 PM EST up reply actions

Do I feel the officiating was fine today? NO

I think the refs have sucked ALL year across the league. I could say that the Texans have had 3 close games handed away by the refs.

But the reality is that the Texans put themselves in a position to be a victim of the officiating.

We all know the refs have had an EPICALLY bad year. this year has bee TERRIBLE for officiating.

The only way to not get hosed is to not put yourself in a position to rely on the refs.

Trust me, the Texans have learned that painful lesson OVER AND OVER this year.

At the end of the day though, if you take care of business on defense and offense, then it shouldn’t matter what the refs do. Thats the way you have to play the game these days,

by phatfinfan on Dec 27, 2009 7:52 PM EST up reply actions

The fumble call was bad, the refs should not have blown his whistle, that was dumb.

But the yardage swing wouldn’t have changed the game. Maybe a field goal from the 35-40 yard line, which is certainly not a gimme and still leave syoudown 4 points at the endof the day.

Bad call? yes

Game changer? Not even close.

When you knock an offense 30 or 40 yards back you change the entire dynamic of plays called.

That was a momentum killer. Did the Refs lose the game for Miami? No. Did the refs help the Texans secure a victory? Absolutely!

Really??? Cause I would have classified his play as very poor.

by cinmat3128 on Dec 27, 2009 4:38 PM EST reply actions

Agreed...

they ran the same play with the TE like 10 times and he would get 15 – 20 yards each time. Akin would not follow him but would try to chase him down each time after he caught the ball. Not to mention Akin had a tackle in the backfield that when the RB spun, he ended up getting a first down. I’d say our entire defense forgot how to tackle and it shows why we deserve to be sitting at home in January

They couldn’t tackle an 80 year old woman in a wheelchair. I thought the entire LB corp gelled during the 2nd half. Moving someone to the “Mike” is hard. It’s just like replacing your starting QB in the 1st couple of series…the team will sputter.

Im sick of people saying Henne needs touch on his passes across the middle

These receivers and running backs are in the NFL. Catch the ball, it’s your job. Seriously no one critisized Favre all those years he was throwing fastballs to his receivers because they caught them. Henne is a gunslinger. No matter what someone is always unhappy. With Pennington it was his noodle, with Henne its his cannon. Just shut up and be happy about the positives. BTW that TD pass to Ginn had great touch.

P.S Second strait week of bullshit reffing. Seriously? Tripping my ass that was the worst call I’ve ever seen. Pre-mature wistles have screwed us over the past two weeks. The end of the week last week when the wistle was blown while Taylor was stripping it, and this week with the phantom “incomplete” just let them play and blow the wistle later, blind zebras

What is next?

Another year the dolphins refuse to quit but yet come up short every time they have a chance to put themselves in the elite of the AFC. The big question now is what is this regime going to do to keep this crap from happening again next year. I cannot remember the last time that we dominated in a game that we were supposed to win. I belive we are headed in the right direction but as a 25 year fan enough is enough. We seem to always play to the level of our opponent. We are stout against the Colts and Saints and struggle to beat the Bills, Bucs, and have never beat the Texans?! I think big changes need to take place with the coordinators. We either dominate for one half of a game or suck for one half of a game. Poor coaching!! Shame on Tony Sporano if he keeps the same staff next year!

officiating

the refs were despicable today. absolutely embarrassing for them. the 2nd challenge was CLEARLY a FUMBLE (I WAS THERE) and the call on Louie for “tripping” was beyond absurd. Sad thing is, if that call doesn’t happen and Teddy gets into the endzone, we’re within 10 significantly sooner than we actually did pull within 10 and give ourselves a better chance to win.

by WillOber on Dec 27, 2009 5:56 PM EST reply actions

correction

the 2nd “challenge” as I said above was not actually a challenge because the ruling on the field was an incomplete pass, which is a non-challengeable call. At any rate, the ruling of an incomplete pass was incomprehensible because the replays explicitly show the receiver catching the ball, maintaing possession and taking at least two steps, subsequently fumbling the ball. That call burned us pretty hard because we would have had the ball at midfield.

The bottomline is that the NFL is rigged somehow

and the underdogs who go up against Americas top teams get screwed out of the possibility of a win.

We don’t need to get into the playoffs, personally after seeing our needs exposed, I would prefer the draft pick.

We need to make a big impact in both free agency and the draft for the Dolphins to get where we all want them to be, so I give them 2 more years and we will be atop the NFL’s elite.

I know its the job of the coaches to get the team ready for the upcoming week or team but its the players who make the plays not the coaches!!!! I too like many of you wish we went for it on 4 and 4 down 10 points, but this coach has a fire that I love!!! I do not know what adjustment where made during halftime, but I wish this team played with more passion in the first half!!! In an elimination game no less!!!! I'm not going to blame the lack of coaching on not having this team fired up.

Seeing Coach Sparanos post game press conference it looked like someone killed both his sons with dirty, rusty machete! If he didn’t have those glasses on you would have seen he was crying all through the press conference.

I blame the reason of this team not being fired up is the lack of leadership and sense of urgency amongst the players. There’s only so much the coaching staff can do to start the fire but the players must keep the fire going within themselves. This team came in flatfooted after Andre Johnson and Schaub toasted them on that first drive. Maybe this team is still young in the sense that they haven’t figured out that they most make the “play” and not wait around for someone else to make the “play” for them. The last play was indicative of that mentality. A freakin rookie knew what was at stake and plowed through the line of scrimmage to the first down. Everyone on the Dolphins side of the ball just stood up and looked at each other waiting for someone to make a stop. No urgency, no initiative=pretender.

Sorry to dissappoint to stop the “Conspiracy Theory” talk about the refs making sure the bigger market teams winning the games. Isn’t true! The dolphins loss, let me say that again THE DOLPHINS LOSS THE GAME. Yeah, those were ticky tack calls but a contender sucks it up and wins the game a pretender looks for excuses on why everyone else is at fault for losing the game except for themselves.

one point made earlier wasn't the refs ensuring anything, just showing favoritism toward

certain story lines. you see it in basketball unfortunately too in a much more overt way. (and you seemed to attribute this earlier to ‘natural bias’).
the final play was incredibly aggravating, but it was the rookie’s cutback against a strong move downline that looked like overpursuit. but point taken.
will be an interesting draft!

by a1a on Dec 27, 2009 7:30 PM EST up reply actions

yeah, it will be an interesting draft. Looks like FO will have to get an ILB

with Crowder going down in this game. I love Crowder and our stable of ILB’s but we need some one who can help Crowder. Crowder is overextending himself on every play cause he doesn’t have some one who’ll make a play with out his help.
I’m hoping they get Spikes from Florida the kid is dynamic and has wheels to stick to TE’s and enough to make RBs feel uncomfortable running their routes.

The main need is #1. Man, we have the perfect #2’s(Hartline, Camarillo) a solid Slot(DaBess) and a speedster that can justify in going in a 5 man spread or 4 man look in Ginn. Who in this WR draft class can be a #1? Or do the FO go FA, but I’m now shaky to that proposition due to any team worth their salt will immediately ask for Ronnie Brown and a first or a couple of #2’s. Lex is great, Cobbs is for real, Williams is aging and it isn’t fair for him to carry more than 20 times, but Ronnie’s got two great years ahead of him. I want this team to have both a complete running game and passing game still. The Marino era still gives me chills due to he never head a running back. I don’t want that for Henne.

JETS will make the playoffs after beating COLTS

Ouch, talk about rubbing salt in the wound. Its a bad day to be a Dolfan.

by goheat on Dec 27, 2009 7:25 PM EST reply actions

What? Salt in the wound???

Are you even a Dolphins fan?? The last undefeated goes down and you call that "salt in the wound?"

I just popped the champagne! 100% serious. There is only one perfect season and that’s all there ever will be.

a truly amazing record remains!

and indy is knocked off by a team we beat twice

HELL YEA.easier schedule now

with the jets win.. probably gonna finish in 3rd place in east..I LIKE

by Wallace758 on Dec 27, 2009 7:27 PM EST reply actions

and for something random

I know he missed that kick but was that a 54 yard try? That kick looked like DC$ took it from the 20! I knew he was good but I didn’t know he can kick that far and make it look like a day in the park with his kid. I thought he was an accuracy kicker not a distance kicker.

Does any one know he’s longest kick he’s ever done? It looks like he can kick a 62 yarder with out pulling a muscle.

by jesavius on Dec 27, 2009 7:49 PM EST reply actions

His long is a 50

and I too didn’t realize he had that sort of leg strength

by kazam92 on Dec 27, 2009 11:13 PM EST up reply actions

I think we have another need...

Kicker. Carpenter is ok, but he has cost us some points in critical games. He has a weak leg on kickoffs and is ok, but not the kicker you would want in the Championship game with a 52 yarder and time running out. over 45 yards he’s shaky. He was a decent replacement for Feely because Feely wanted to act like an idiot and got run out of town!

8-8 is a victory at this point!

by phatfinfan on Dec 27, 2009 8:21 PM EST reply actions

wow.

he’s misses from 54 and we’re calling for his head????
i’ve come to like and mostly trust him. others?

by a1a on Dec 27, 2009 8:30 PM EST up reply actions

No, but his misses have been costly

and the guy can’t kick it past the 5 yardline. He’s good, but not The long tem solution. He’s not getting better as he gets more experience.

8-8 is a victory at this point!

by phatfinfan on Dec 27, 2009 8:37 PM EST up reply actions

We needed those points.

54 yarders are common in the NFL!

8-8 is a victory at this point!

by phatfinfan on Dec 27, 2009 8:38 PM EST up reply actions

disagree on both

Only a few elite kickers can make those with consistency. Carpenter has been solid this year, making what he needed to. Besides what are you gonna do? Be like the Raiders and draft a kicker in the 3rd round?

by kazam92 on Dec 27, 2009 11:13 PM EST up reply actions

Find me the NFL success rate on field goals over 50 yards.

Seriously? Come on now. I think you’re just ranting for the sake of ranting now.

I just think the guy is an ok fill-in

but he is not a dependidl kicker. Ok? yes…Franchise kicker? No. Everyone is talking about positions that need to be upgraded, I think Carpenter needs to be upgraded.

8-8 is a victory at this point!

Receivers

So after the past 3-4 weeks, does anyone still think WR is our a biggest problem? I think the offense is fine, maybe solidify the O-line a little. Our D is where we really need help. I think almost all of the money should be spent on improving the D this offseason.

Camarillo, Hartline, Bess, and even Ginn have made a ton of great catches in the past few weeks. I would say Hartline and Bess are the two best WRs on the team. I don’t know what to make of Ginn… so much potential.

After Ronnie went out, I don’t know why Hilliard didn’t get more reps immediately. I was expecting to see the load split between him and Ricky about 70/30, not 90/10.

by ClarkT on Dec 27, 2009 8:22 PM EST reply actions

Agreed--D Is the Biggest Need

The D line is fine—near the top in sacks and strong up the middle against the run. But the Phins really need some better LBs and safeties so they stop getting burned all the time in coverage.

well its been fun

I applaud this Coaching staff and FO for keeping us in it despite injuries, inexperience and one hell of a schedule, until the bitter end.
It may have been a step back but at least we still had a respectable year.

Now lets play spoiler and f*** Pittsburgh’s sh** up.

It was a decent comeback

we got screwed over though and we are absolutely cursed against this team. I give props to Ginn & Hilliard for showing some balls

and hey the Heat won big time. My Sunday wasn’t all bad

Hi guys,

I know you don’t think the Dolphins get respect, but during the game thread Sunday on PatsPulpit, it was mentioned that the Dolphins were behind. Immediately someone said that there is no deficit that the Dolphins couldn’t come back from. To which everyone agreed.

Sorry about the loss especially if it means the Jets make the playoffs. If that happens, I’d paraphrase Rex Ryan and say that the better team sat home in January.

It's sad that a Pats fan is showing more love for the Phins than their own fans.

Earlier this season before the first MIA/NE game, I was listening to the B.S. Report when Simmons heard the line for that game(NE by 11) and said: “There is no team in the NFL that should be giving Miami 11 points.”

After last week, I knew that the game wasn’t over, because for some reason, these scrappy bastards always find a way to make things interesting.

I think that everyone is just raging mad right now…but people need to calm down and realize what with everything that’s happened this year, overall it’s not a bad season. This team is young, and rebuilding. The foundation is there — but you can’t live in a house without walls and a roof.

Quick fixes and knee-jerk reactions are the territory of Daniel Snyder. How is Chainsaw Snyder’s team going this year, by the way?

by rroan28 on Dec 28, 2009 12:34 AM EST up reply actions

Here's the reality as I see it.

Last year the Dolphins made the playoffs based on a tie-breaker. 1-15 to 11-5 was a remarkable rags to riches story. Pennington comeback player of the year and all of that. It hid the fact that Miami was in the first year of rebuilding. The stars aligned and the Dolphins did better than anyone outside of Miami expected. As a result they didn’t get the 4th place schedule this year, they got the 1st place.

This year Miami went toe-to-toe with the biggest teams and held there own. Owned the Jets (they’re not big, but by mentioning them I get to say you owned them and that sounds really good), close with the Colts, close with the Saints, and split with the Patriots. This while losing Pennington and Brown for the season, and relying on a virtually untried Henne. This is rebuilding season two. Parcells rebuilding typically takes three years. You guys are way ahead of the curve. My worst fear this year was losing the division to you guys on another freaking tie-breaker.

Next year is rebuilding year three and I am not looking forward to playing you guys twice. That’s a fact.

Respect! as Ali G would say...

I appreciate that honesty of yours, it’s cool man, there’s no need to deny that you’re a Dolfan in heart…Pats are a bad ass team but the media just simply tarnished who you were.

Are you kidding me

You dont say that chad Henne wasted or burnt a time out oh no the self proclaimed golden leader of the free world made a mistake. Now all you pat white haters can stick it straight up your golf bag I told everyone that henne is going to lead everyone to a golf corse. And I was right lol I am laughing to the pat white fan club…… I also hope that they trade white to the pats and he runs all over all those haters…… so long bye bye to all those playoffs lol henne for president……..
