Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Sweet, sweet carbonation

With all of the games we've been having with playoff aspirations attached to them, we cannot forget to keep a light and happy attitude on us going into the heart of a festive holiday season.

I'm going to do what I can to spark some fun, interesting debate on something that isn't tied to our favorite common love, but is still another favorite common love (for some of us, anyway):

Star-divide

Beer.

I'm merely a 21-year-old, and turned so this past October. Suffice to say, I did not begin enjoying beers on the 24th of that month. I did, however, begin to truly ENJOY beers after that date. I now look for actual taste, sense the flavors and the aroma, and take sips for reasons other than to kill my brain cells with fermentation.

Now that I've truly begun to get into what these brews were, well, brewed for, I would like to have a spirited (no pun intended) talk about it with those of you who find similar interest. Whether it's craft or not, ale, lager, IPA, etc. etc., and as long as the I in the Sky OKs it, let's keep this strictly beer to keep our tempers in check and get to know more about our fellow fans.

If you want a guideline to start things off, you can talk about your favorite beer(s), reminisce about the day you first tasted it(/them), or just discuss the ideal blend of hops, barley, wheat, whatever. Enjoy!

Sorry, Buffett. Landshark Lager just is not good beer.

Never tried Sierra Nevada or Yeungling

Tried a Harpoon Leviathan the other day. Pretty good, but some ales are a bit strong to me. Still getting used to them.

I used to love Corona.. the idea of a Corona or a Landshark now just kinda grosses me out. Sorta like drinking beer-flavored water.

I was drinking Yuengling in '79

When I was 15.
And I’m still drinking it (now that it’s finally in Nashville, thank God!).
Talk about taste for cost -Yuengling’s got it.

Otherwise, Sam Adams has the best damn selection of American beer I’ve ever tasted. In fact, their lineup rivals many European beers (of which I’ve had very, very, many).

I’ll never forget the day my 10-or-so-year-old-brother took a sip out of a tall glass of some lite beer my dad poured for himself—in a clear glass, which made it look an awful lot like apple juice—and ran to the bathroom spitting it out as he went.

Classic.

I'm a big fan of the brown ales.

Probably my personal favorite is Newcastle, and I’ve found a couple of other really good ones. There is one called Rogue Dead Guy Ale that’s brewed in Oregon, and a new one that I found that is quickly starting to rival Newcastle as my fave, Turbodog. It’s made by a brewing company called Abita from Louisiana. Another cool thing about it, is I think 5% of the profit from every beer Abita sells goes to helping rebuild stuff from Katrina. Or at least it did, I’m not sure if they still do that or not.

Another couple of good ones from some smaller brewers that I like is Trout Slayer and Moose Drool. They are both made by Big Sky, and they have a little bit of a bitter flavor to them, but they are excellent.

Yeah, the Dead Guy Ale will probably be the toughest to find.

I only know of a few places that sell it around where I live, and half the time its out of stock. The Turbodog is a little easier to find, although its still not as common as Newcastle is. And I don’t really know about the Moose Drool or the Trout Slayer, a buddy of mine gave me a 6 of each for my birthday this year which is how I know them. But I don’t know how easy or difficult they are to find.

Luckily for me, I have a place about 15 minutes from my house that sells all of those, so I know I can always get them when I want.

Yeah there's a place about 15-20 from me

That has a load of stuff I’ve never heard of, and then some. Might make a trip there to take a look for a few of those, or bring back new stuff I can share here.

I got my Doghead Fishes there, as well as a pumpkin ale and a couple of blueberries. The latter is delicious yet strong like a beer should be, perhaps the best blueberry ale I’ve tried. Though I don’t know how the majority of you feel about fruity beers like that.

I love trying new beers. Seeing what I like and what I don't.

Pick up some new stuff, but if you see any of the ones I mentioned, especially the Turbodog, give it a shot. If you like brown ales you won’t be disappointed.

The best part about the place by me, is they used to let you mix n match your own 6 packs with bottles kept in refrigerated coolers. Alas, they stopped doing that a little bit ago.

See that's exactly what I want

I mixed and matched Dogheads the first time I went in there, and the dude pretty much charged me for a full six of the lesser of the two kinds I mixed. Loved it.

Second time around I got a four for about the same price, but I mixed in two types of blueberries, a Harpoon, and a pumpkin just to try one of each.

I’m not sure if they’re starting to get sick of me doing it or not, but they’ve yet to give me any crap about it and that’s why they’re my favorite place. Huge selection, let me try one of everything.

I’ll keep ya posted on new stuff that I try.

Ever try Dogfish Head?

I’ve given both their 60 minute and 90 minute (Imperial?) IPAs a try. The 90 is of course more bitter than the 60, but both have a strong taste to them. Having said that, not my favorite style, but still a well-brewed beer.

Orange Blossom Pilsner is the bees knees

Coors Light is my favorite light beer. Pabst is my favorite cheap beer. And I’ll try any dark ale anyone suggests (so long as I can find it).

Not a fan of any pale ales, blonde lagers are fantastic. Beach Bum (when it’s in season) is amazing, and made by Budweiser. And Pumpkinhead Ale is a treat.

As for dessert beers, Seadog Blueberry Wheat Ale.

Seadog you say

I was about to pluck one out of the freezer and give it a try before opting for a Wild Blue Blueberry Lager (amazing if you like blueberry “dessert beers”) and a Bluepoint Blueberry Ale (which I hardly got to taste as my dad got to it first, but I’m sure you know what to expect).

Never heard of or tried Beach Bum, nor have I tried their Pumpkinhead Ale. I believe we got a six of pumpkin ales I’ve yet to give a try. I’ll let you know after I open one up.

Seadog is better IMO than WIld Blue, never had bluepoint.

Beach Bum you’ll have to wait for the summer, but they have it draft @ Outback Steakhouse when it’s in season, which is the only reason I would step foot in there lol. Pumpkinhead you neeeeeed to try. it’s heaven in a bottle.

Oatmeal Stout is also amazing.

I just thought of a few more that need to be tried: Young’s Double Chocolate Stout, Newcastle, Bluemoon, Purple Haze and Boddingtons.

by chrislucas on Dec 23, 2009 3:21 PM EST up reply actions

Those four I'll definitely give a taste

I’m really just anti-Budweiser right now because of how generic and watered down their “main” product is. But I’ll man up and give those a try because I’m sure they taste far different.

The Golden Wheat wasn’t bad, I’ll admit.

My dad bought a 30 of craft beers from Otter Creek up in Vermont. I’ve only tried one of the three types that come in that box, called Raspberry Brown. Pretty good though. A hint of raspberry as you would expect, with a “brown” after-taste. I’d describe that as a cocoa, almost chocolatey flavor. Not amazing outside of those flavor hints, but if you drink for the flavor experience, at least worth trying.

Tried that Pumpkin Ale I mentioned earlier

Post Road Pumpkin Ale. Nothing spectacular, but your usual molasses, brown sugar, various spices with the slightest hint of pumpkin. Smooth, pretty good really. Don’t think it’s the best pumpkin I’ve tried, but wasn’t disappointing.

Idea:

An egg nog beer. Got the idea from.. well, I think you can guess. It is Christmastime, after all.

I just found one that exists, and only one person on ratebeer.com had even rated it.

Thus, time to brew our own.

Yes

That is most likely my favorite of the Sam Adams. Had a bottle of it at a party where I was already half trashed (a rarity, but a good night nonetheless) and loved what I remember tasting of it.

it was very very yummy lol

haha he had SOOOOOOO much beer, at least like 70 or so, and I was the only one there that was drinking beer that night (his family is French so they were all drinking wine) so me and this other guy were just pounding beers, and on top of that I had a lot of wine also…and then after the family left his son’s friends came over and we turned to the hard stuff…EPIC first Xmas ever lol

Hahaha

Now you know that was a great night.

Speaking of great nights (before the end of it that is), I bought a six of Sam Adams Cream Stout and had a few tonight with some friends. Damn good beer.

I had a Shipyard Pumpkinhead

My dad brought it home and it was bangin’. Wasn’t aware they even had an IPA but I will have to give that a try if I happen to see it.

Going out to the packy tonight with the girlfriend and heading out to a friend’s, so I’ll let you guys in on the new stuff I try! Any more suggestions before I head out?
