Around SBN: Win or Lose, Boston Celtics' New Big 3 Era A Success

Post-Game Thread: Dolphins rally but fall in OT

Well the Dolphins showed a lot of heart and resiliency to battle back from a 24-6 deficit. But in the end, the turnovers and penalties were too much to overcome.

We knew Chad Henne would have those "inexperienced quarterback" moments and he had them today. But he showed a lot the way he battled back. Brian Hartline also made one hell of a "lucky" catch to keep the Dolphins' alive late in the game.

But it is what it is - a loss.

Use this thread for all post-game discussion (rather than creating a fanpost about the game - that's what this thread is for). Usual recap to come tonight.

And let's keep this post clean - no profanity.

Titans fan here

You guys hit the nail on the hammer. I love the Titans, and I love the win, but it was lucky and certainly officiating aided. I would love for the NFL to do something about it, but this happens to almost every team (excluding Indy and NE, sometimes the Steelers, of course). The 15 yard call after Griff’s interceptions was ludicrous. The holding call by the sideline official was very poor judgement. I feel like the Titans tried to give the game away, but the refs wouldn’t let them.

Apparently

if a ball is picked off the defender can slide to the ground and the play is over. Cam was making sure he was down by touching him. It was a light hit, but didn’t warrant the penalty imo.

it shouldn't have been a penalty

Griffin fell on his ass, no one touched him, Camarillo came in and tried to pop the ball out instead of just touching him down, the refs determined that he was down already (even though he wasn’t touched) and threw the flag for late hit..

Sounds like College.

Remember a few years ago when Marvin Harrison caught a ball went to the ground and played possum? A bunch of Ravens Defenders just stood around and thought the play was over. Nope. Marvin gets up and runs for a TD.

Cam did the right thing. That penalty was crap.

Just left the game

It’s too bad this had to happen in the one game I go to this year. Our weaknesses finally caught up with us.

- The Titans didn’t fear our WRs, for good reason.
- Henning really needs to kill his love affair with P White.
- We missed Ronnie, Will Allen, and Ferguson big time today.
- Henne looked his age, but I still think he’s got a bright future.

Good season, guys. Maybe next year!

Stay Positive

we basically are right back where we started today, just with one less game to play. We would still need a couple teams to lose though. Basically, we need Tennessee to lose, and Bmore/Denver to lose twice. Not sure about the rest of the teams because I don’t know the tiebreakers and such, but I at least know if we tie with JAX, we have the head2head, and if we tie with NYJ, we have the head2head, so Tenn and either BMore or Denver are the only teams I think that need to help us out..

yes

then it hit me that it really was a good call. when you only need 2 yards, and the threat of a quick litle QB running that draw on you is there, it forces you to keep the LB’s in instead of spreading em around to cover zones. I think his presence helped Ricky get that gap because somebody had to stay home to watch Pat.

Henne saw something new today

a defense that was going to force him to beat them with precision and timing. Reminded me of the Fins during the Jim Bates years, force the qb to throw into heavy coverage while counting on your front four to be disruptive enough to prevent him from doing that. It worked, and Henne looked frustrated from the get-go by it. It’s the kind of thing that just takes some experience to beat.

that's what happens when you shut up and play.

dang, I knew this game was going to be in Hennes hand. Titans gambled on making Henne win this game. But it’s official dolphins have their franchise qb.

VY really looked good, but he was playing against a crappy FS in gerbil and rooks who’ll eat him up next year once they get a full offseason studying and game experience for this year.

Wilson is gone next year, the only good news hopefully is with the season over that they start Culver and Clemons to get them experience these last two games. I have more trust with Culver and a rookie FS then gwilson against Andre Johnson.

Maybe but maybe not

If Tenn and Mia end up the only teams tied at the end, then Tenn would get in. But that doesn’t see likely with the clusterfuck that is the AFC wildcard chase. So if Miami could finish in a 3 (or more) team tie, they could possibly be ahead of Tenn due to conference record.

Close but no cigar. All well Henne’s gotta learn but I hope the coaching staff will learn to Lose Gibril Wilson asap and how about my main man Ginn who fumbled the ball on that punt shying away from contact AGAIN! Ted- go run track some where you can’t be tackled! This loss hurts but I was proud of the comeback. The play offs are out, period and don’t try and tell me otherwise it’s over this year. In college you’re down even if nobody touches you but I thought in the NFL someone has to touch you down even you go down by yourself except when your taking the snap. Is there some special rule when the player intercepts the ball that when their knee hits the ground they’re down without the opposing team touching them down?

thank for answering

Yeah, he should of just touched him instead of jumping on top of him. and I agree it’s still a bad call in that there was nothing malicious when cam dove on him. If cam led with the head or kicked him when he was on the ground then you call that. But as a ref you have to understand that players don’t know all the rules of the game especially when there is a technicality in when a player is officially down due to change of possession rule like that you have to hold the whistle.

I don’t like to bag on the refs but their objective position was swayed by home field advantage. It seemed that any call they could make for the home team they made sure to make it.

that the 15yard penalty gave them an easier field goal which made it a 45 yard, now if you add it to it then its a 59 yard and harder to make

yeah that didn’t warrant a penalty. I know he went down on his own. But it wasn’t a hard hit by any mean. It’s not like it was a QB who slid.

it hurt but im still proud

the way we fought back and kept scraping away and clawing back in it. Most of you have covered everything but i think no one mentioned Vernon. Vernon Carey had an atrocious game today. as did The G-Bril or as he is “affectionatly” known as gerbil around here. This is one of those games i will watch a few more times this week, if i can take it. ugh what a tough one.

these refs really screwed us over...

sure the camarillo penalty killed us but, we all know that the JT strip should have been reviewed. And the truth is, it might have been reversed, and the refs might have given us the ball.

As far as Henne, he was the one who drove us back from the depths of hell in this game. Those growing pains will happen, it is truly what he does next season that I will be looking at when I judge what type of quarterback he is.

We saw Pat White be used wisely for once in this game, and we also saw that Hartline is the real deal. Henne has some improving to do, but overall I’m not going to jump off of his bandwagon. We showed some resiliency today, and maybe if we add a homerun threat to the offense, we win the game. CJ Spiller would complement Ronnie and Ricky really well.

the corners

well anyway Vontae got toasted once today, ifelt for him but he is something special, he is going to be one hell of a gamer in his career. as for sean. Consistency is a bit of an issue, alright more than a bit, but hes bright and really talented, i have great hopes for these guys. And Nate “the devil off the edge” jones has played extremly well this season, minus the San diego game. and j. allen is even playing okay, i think we are close at corner, i actually really do. minus Will Allen. God no comment, what do you guys think

I'LL leave with this

im texting with my best friend and he’s a jets fan who is down on sanchez but i say he has a good young qb who’ll get better…that has me thinking that henne is very young and man can he throw it, he’s gonna have mistakes in his first year but the kid has heart and guts, remember he took us down the field to tie it from his own 10 yard line. i am very proud of this team and grateful for the future we will have. we have come a long way since 1-15, some teams are still struggling to find their mark but we seem to have it. we will be better and contend soon, we will have a bright future and we should all be happy for how far we have come. we wont be 11-5 this year againg but after going through this tough sched and taking some of the best shots from all teams and yet we still are a tough out i can only imagen how good we will be in the upcoming years. chances is we wont make the playoffs but you know what…i say to everyone im damn glad to be a phins fan and have such a great up-and coming team.

Man,two years ago,we were 1-15,a year ago we made the wildcard thanks to the wildcat, this year,we lose 2 rb’s,a cerebral qb,starting corner, starting nt,starting te,and are still finding ways to keep it close. Weve come pretty close to beating several top teams, and have even split the series with lady brady, and his backup dancers. Imo,the fo really has done a good job in piecing this team together, all things considering. Also note,to those that think we need a number one reciever come next years draft, give hartline some time, and think defense this draft, with the exception of rb,and a player or two in later rounds, our troubles lie with the age of the d,and i really think well go d for most of the draft

Better record?

Correct me if I’m wrong. If we win out and Denver wins out, that should leave both teams with a 7-5 conference record. Am I wrong? The next tie breaker is common games with both teams @ 2-3. Next is strength of schedule which would certainly favor the Phins. Maybe I’m wrong?

prior to todays games

a philly lose would not do it we needed denver to lose to either raiders or kc. Since we both lost conference ghames I will assume a philly lose doesnt do it for us

if Denver wins out

they have 10 wins on the year; we’d only have 9

if Denver loses to Philly and the Dolphins win out, it would come down to strength of victory (not strength of schedule). And that requires a bunch of calculations. But if Denver beat Philly and lost to KC and the Dolphins win out, the Fins would have the conference tie-breaker over Denver.

by Matty I on Dec 20, 2009 10:56 PM EST up reply actions

Sorry, Denver would have to lose to Philly!

by BLEEDGREENANDORANGE on Dec 20, 2009 8:07 PM EST reply actions

I think you may be right that Denver/Miami would come down to common games.. Miami is 5-5 in the conference so winning out would put them at 7-5. Denver would also go to 7-5 with a win against KC.

2 home games….win em’ both and see what happens.

That Camarillo penalty is GARBAGE…you cant make that call in that situation….and it wasnt obvious the guy was down.

Ricky set the tone for a catch up game with that fumble…hes obviously getting tired or something these last few.

Henne made some great throws….but made some unforgivable mistakes.

SHOULDA, COULDA, WOULDA…..on to the next one.

We can't put this game soley on Henne or Ricky's fumble. Our D playe dpretty horrible the first half with giving up some key third down plays.

That kept Tennesee drive alive, which later lead to points. Our offense owned them all day they couldn’t stop us. It was crucial penalties from a team that leads the league with the least amount of penalties that also killed us. Where was Cameron Wake. From what I saw it seemed he kept getting pushed right pass VY, What happened to the bull rush we saw last week. A good amount of calls were atrocious and seemed as if they wanted to help Tenn write history or some sh!t, but it wasn’t them who shot themselves in the Arse and gave up 3 turnovers in the redzone. For real 3 in the redzone WTF. This was a tough loss for all of us, but like we keep telling ourselves the future is looking bright. I believe Henne just prove to everyone that with a little more time he will be a QB that can and will lead this team to victory a lot more in the Future. FINALLY WILL SOMEONE TAKE THE GERBIL OUTBACK AND DO THIS TEAM A FAVOR. Come on MATTY you got to have a hook up living in JERSEY and all. I think a nice pair of cement boots would look nice on him.

Current Senario with Denver

Looks like we’ll need them to lose to KC in the season finale.

Assuming Miami wins out……

Miami will finish 7-5 in the conference.
If Denver loses to Philly but beats KC, they’ll also have a 7-5 conference record.

Assuming a MIA win over PIT, Miami and Denver will be 2-3 in common games.

The next tie-breaker is strength of schedule and this is where Denver would is currently beating us out:

Miami .422
Denver .457

Of course we know that this will change very much before the end of the season but those early wins Denver had against CIN, DAL, and SD will probably give them the edge in the end.

Cheer for these teams to lose next week because they have lost to Denver: Bengals, Browns, Raiders, Cowboys, Redskins, and Chiefs.

Cheer for these teams to win next week because them have lost to Miami: Bills, Bucs, Panthers.

Sorry to pee in Miami’s cornflakes. Basically this should and would ‘ve been a blowout. Had dolphins on the ropes early and didn’t finish Titans need to learn to put teams away when they are down! And don’t give me that ref bad call bs. Dolphins really had no business winning that game anyway. WE almost let them off the hook. “46”

no business?

The Titans had no business winning that game. Henne made poor throws that landed right in Tennessee’s arms and Ricky gave away a fumble.

As far as the officials go, I don’t blame things on the ref so I won’t do that. But the Dolphins EARNED their right to be in that game – and even to win it. But a costly OT turnover will kill you – and it did today.
