Can Phins beat their all-time team sack record?UPDATE (Poll)
I have just updated this post with the new sack totals since the Titan game.
I am not hearing much about it, but the Dolphin defense is quietly going about its business when it comes to pressuring and sacking opponent QB's. The Vikings lead the NFL in sacks so far this season with 43. In second place are the Steelers who have 40 and now we have moved from third to a tie for second with the Steelers. Porter, Starks, Taylor, Wake and the boys now have 40 equaling our total from 2008. That means that our defense is averaging 2.85 sacks per game. We need 7 more and the defense would finish up with 47 sacks this season that would tie for 3rd most in team history. But they need 49 on the season to tie the '83 and '05 teams. It was great to see Taylor emerge from his slack slump and have an excellent game against Tennessee. Can Peezy step up along with the rest of the defense and create at least 10 more sacks over the next two home games? Doesn't seem likely, but it will be fun to watch and see.
Here is the rub: Houston is giving up only 1.5 sacks a game, and gave up goose egg Sunday against the hapless Rams. Meanwhile our final opponent Pitt, is giving up just over 3 a game, and the Pack just layed 5 on them Sunday. By using those averages , the Phins will end up with 44 or 45 sacks for the season, still a great year, but not record breaking. One possible scenario that is somewhat plausible is that we get our average of 3 against the Texans and 6 against the Steelers, whose old monicker of "Steel Curtain" currently looks more like the "Shower Curtain", and tie our team record. What is likely, in my opinion is that we get another 6 to 7 on the season.
What you have to love is, whereas we don't have a Jared Allen or an Elvis Dumervil contributing for half the teams sacks, we do have 14 players that have all made their contribution to getting to the QB.
Here are the numbers for this years "SACK-MEISTERS" so far this season:
Porter-8 Taylor-7 Starks-6 Wake-5.5 Langford -2.5 Merling- 2.5 Anderson-2
Bell and McDaniels each have 1.5 sacks.
Crowder, Torbor and Wilson, each have 1 sack, rounded out by Baker with .5 sacks.
Last year the Dolphins had 40 sacks all season, so whatever else we do this year, the Fish have had a great year harassing QB's. And in case you were curious like me....the NFL record in sacks in a single season is a whopping 72 by none other than the 84 Bears.
A couple things I will be interested to watch for:
Can we catch the Vikings for 1st place in the NFL? The Vikings have left to play Chicago (giving up 2.2 sacks a game) and the Giants (giving up 1.8 sack a game).
Who will finish wit the most sacks for the season between Porter, Taylor, Starks, or Wake? I believe it could be any of those I just named, and with the look in J.T's eyes this past Sunday, I wouldn't bet against him.

Interesting. Who'da thunk it?
I don’t think tomorrow will be much of a sack day, unfortunately. Houston doesn’t have a stellar running game this year. We can stop them. Maybe a few more then? Who knows with Pitt & concussion boy? Being the last game (and our last needed win!) we should be bear hugging Benny some!

I pray VY gets sacked often!!!!
It’s great our sacks are coming from all angles because that means when somebody is being double covered, we can adjust and bring pressure from other areas. I am going to be exhausted tomorrow as I’ll be sure to provide the phins all my extra support.

very interesting stats
“quietly” is the right word— you never hear about miami D it seems.
But in our situation— where we need to win out for playoffs, i expect us to play with more intensity on defense, which should translate into more sacks (especially since we have Pitts last game)

well lets see who we play
Tenn – it’ll be a running game for the titans so our only hope to get 3+ sacks in that game i think would be if we build a 14pt lead to try and have them pass the ball and quit running it, even still with even an 80% VY it’ll be a tough task, i think if Starks and Solia can put some pressure through the middle, both JT and Peezy can contain the edge and get a sack. to top it off i can see Wake getting a sack or two. But again i believe this can only be done if we build a lead against them and force them to pass.
i think 2-3 sacks will come out this game.
Hou – they are a passing team by nature so i think with a constant pass rush we could get to Schaub maybe 2-3 times. the only thing i see is that Schaub has only been sacked 23 times so far and he is pretty nimble on the pocket so it’ll be interesting. i believe this is a pivotal game for us to get pressure on the qb because if not he will destroy us through the air. i can see Sparano bringing in a good blitzing game plan to this game .
i’m seeing 3 sacks in this one.
Pit – well what is there to say, Ben has been taken down 38 times so far this year at an average of 2.92 per game. i can honestly see us putting him down 4-5 times in this game with our d-line dominating on passing downs, now this number can go down because Ben is very elusive in he pocket so it’ll come down to Starks/Solia/Mcdaniels in the middle. if Starks gets 2 sacks in this game and the others put pressure i think we can win the trenches in this game.
game total i see 4 sacks.
that gives us a total of 47/48 sacks and just short of it, still good number but just short.
hopefully a playoffs berth would make us disregard that. so that’s my opinion. :)

with the secondary comin along
i think we can do it.
start cameron wake,
IMO a slight switch to the 4-3 one some plays with the type of personnel we have would help-taylor and wake and the ends and starks and merling and NT we cud really cause some havoc
honestly though i could care less about the sack record, i just want to win out.
GO DOLPHINS!

interesting stats, and I think with us playing the Texans and Steelers at the end of our schedule, that we can get 4 sacks in those two games, and I think we can get 3 sacks in tomorrows game. I think we will be first in the league in sacks though at the end of the season.

Misleading stat. Starks and Wake are our only players that apply consistent pressure or any sort. I think that most of Porter’s sacks – for instance – have come as a result of Wake chasing the QB into his lap.
We wake & blunder on, / wiser, on the whole, / but not more accurate.

And there is something wrong with that? I don't care if it is Wake chasing QB or Starks or JT or Peezy, as long as the QB gets sacked!
