Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

draft priority

yup

Star-divide

So I've been thinking alot lately about what this team needs to improve next season... prob because its that time of the season when the days drag by waiting for the next game. Anyway here is what I think.

1. Inside LB.... I like the guys now but I really think this team would be awesome if we got a true beast on the inside

2. RB.... This is were I think my views differ from most but heres the deal.... number 1 & 3 rbs are both on ir, number 1 becomes a free agent either the end of this season or the end of next season (hope he doesnt go but you never know)... number 2 rb has said he will retire at the end of next season... we are a run first team and we need to give a rookie some time to develop before they take over.

3. A true free safety..... I think the wilson experiment at free safety should end with this season..... he's to slow and plays to much like a strong safety (i.e getting caught looking into the back field for far to long) move him behind Bell on the depth chart and draft an actual free safety

4. NT.... Though I think Soliai has done a nice job coming in for the IR Ferguson, I dont think he is strong enough to be an elite nt... and an elite nt is a must in the afc east

5. WR..... I think the current WR are improving every play.... I think people forget all of them are still in the developing stages to include Ginn.... I believe a free agent pick up would be better than drafting a wr

ffor the most part I agree

though you forget maybe our bestest need OLB we have old men thetre that can not contain the edge and Wake has yet to prove in game or in practice he can be an every down LB I have hope BUT… I expect atleast 2 OLBers drafted on draft day(s)

I'd put money

on us getting at least 2 (more like 3) LBs, 2 of them ILB. We’ll also go for at least two safties.

Assuming we get a Brand Marshall, I think our draft priority should be:

ILB
OLB
NT
RB

. . .

Now, I’m not saying we should draft in that order. If there’s a stud OLB in RD1, and we can get – say – Micah Johnson in RD 3, we ought to go that route – assuming McClain is off the board (I think he will be).

As far as FS, I like Clemons.

i agree that we should get

an established wr in fa or a trade. too much of a crap shoot in the draft for wr’s.

I'm getting tired of seeing these draft post...

it’s a great post, boston boy, but…

It’s not even the end of the season yet and can’t we wait till Free Agency and see what happens?

i agree to disagree

NT is our biggest need BOTTOM LINE im not going to beat a dead horse an explian how important a NT in a 3-4 D is.

Where were you guys yesterday when I needed you!?

I see us going with either a nose tackle or an inside linebacker in round one. People are bummed about McClain moving into the top 10 of most mock drafts, but I HONESTLY don’t see any kind of drastic difference between McClain and Brandon Spikes (flame away if you must.) I think Spikes has unmatched instincts at the middle linebacker position, and there are some real holes in McClain’s game that need to be addressed.

This is a great article about examining McClain’s game tape:

I like the idea of getting a big NT. I just don’t know that we do it in RD 1.

As I’m seeing things, I think Cody will be available in RD2 and Micah Johnson in RD3 – both have the potential to be the best pro players at their position – from this draft class. That leaves us RD1 to get a stud WR – if we don’t land a FA stud (hope we will) – or a dominant OLB. If we can get a player like an Orakpo to put opposite Wake, it’ll be huge. Then, take into account the upgrades in the middle with Cody and Johnson in addition to the development of Smith, Davis, Clemons, Soilia, and our young DE’s, and our D is starting to look real nice.

Unless there isa OLB

they love I would think Spikes would be the choice IF McClaian already gone BUIT like REY REY last year ILBers seem to slip like RBs and WRs come draft day

I’d much rather grab Brandon Graham in the 1st – led the nation in tackles for loss (talk about setting the edge) and then Micah Johnson in the 3rd than reach for Spikes in the 1st. Now, if somehow Spikes falls to us in the 2nd, that’s another story.

Mark my words.....

Ronnie Brown will be re-signed before the start of next season, but only because he’s going to come cheap due to injuries. So we won’t draft a RB till 2011 draft. This draft is going to be filled with two to three LBs, a NT, maybe a FS, one or two OL, and one or two WRs.

by luvs2drnk on Dec 19, 2009 7:22 AM EST reply actions

heres my list...

1. Outside Linebacker- Taylor and Peezy aint getting younger, and we have a lot of options in this years draft.

2. Nosetackle- Fergy looks like he;s done, and I’m not comfortable with Soliai.

3. Free Safety- Gibril sucks.

4. Wide Reciever- Hartline, Bess, and maybe even Ginn and Turner have nice futures, but just in case they don’t, we need recievers. I feel we need a veteran guy in there instead of another rookie.

5. Maybe a gurad- we have no one backing up Smiley or Thomas.

As for RB, we’re likely going to re-sign ronnie, and honestly, I’m good with Lex Hiliard backing him up.

I'm with that list, minor adjustment,

1. NT
2. FS
3. OLB
4.WR
5.I’m not really deadset on a “gurad”, but a taleck to back up Long and Carey would be nice, :>D

I just have a vision of Miami having the best defense in the league sometime within the next two years

Great offenses can be brought down by great defenses, so I hope we take advantage of the defensive Toys-R-Us that is the 2010 draft.

I think the problem

with this list is you overlook ILB. I.O. needs to be replaced though Crowder is a solid comp[limentary ILB

The WR situation… we have 5 wrs under contract/control. If Ginn isnt traded(creating a KR hole in roster) then you let a guy go who? a 3rd pick that hasnt had anytime to develop? Cam a guy who is getting better as knee gets better and is 4th in NFL in % caught of throws his way? Bess the 2 nd NFL in 3rd down receptions and 2nd best slot in AFC? Or Hartline a rookie who has earned extensive playing time as a rook? Or everyones favorite Ginn our fastest guy on team and 2nd best KR in AFC? We only keep 5 WRs and 4 active. I agree we could use a #1 stud WR but I just dont think this FO will get one until AFTER the D is just as they want it and they have figured out who will be their #2 reciever to go with the stud Hartline? or Cam? with Bess in slot and the other the 4th WR? Or does Ginn beat out both? I think as long as we win 2 of 3 and the WRs improve as henne does we will have the same WR core next year as we do this year shrugs

If we draft a FS not named Berry high in the draft, it will be an absolute disaster/waste of a pick. And, we all know that Berry isn’t falling into our laps.

If we could get something for Bell or Wilson, I wouldn’t mind grabbing T. Mays as a SS. He reminds me of A. Wilson. But, he is not, not, NOT a FS – just as Wilson and Bell are not FS’s.

Interesting Name for SSOLB (the next Lamar Woodley?)

Brandon Graham. I like the talent of Hughes, Kindle, and Sapp. Kindle and Hughes are big enough to play SSOLB; Sapp is a bit light. Graham, though, weighs in at nearly 270, and he’s a beast. Never hear much about him around here, though. Some draft boards have him as the #1 OLB, but he wasn’t drafted in TM’s Mock RD1. Plus, we have a good record with Michigan players. I love the kid at SSOLB.
