The first Todd McShay mock draft is out today, and he has us taking ...
Golden Tate at #21.
Well, I didn't see that one coming. He projects it as a bit of a reach, which I would completely agree with. I am neither for or against this pick right now, since I believe our offense really does need a big-time play-maker at wideout -- I am just unsure Golden Tate can be that player for us.
Still, I am curious to see how many 2010 mock drafts have us taking a receiver.
As I've basically predicted from the start, McClain doesn't make it out of the top 10. However, it's interesting that only one nose tackle is projected in the first round, and it's Dan Williams going #32 to New Orleans. This is the first draft I've seen omit Terrence Cody out of the first round (I can already hear Nicky saying, "Because he sucks."), and I wonder if this is a trend that we'll see all through the offseason.
Thoughts?

I will be stunned if the FO takes a WR in round 1
I just don’t see it happening. I think they will draft defense, again.
I would have to agree with Nicky on Cody. Cody is the most unproductive college all american maybe in the history of all americans. I just don’t see it with him. You could find a guy in round 6 or 7 who will do just as good a job as Cody. Anyone who drafts him will have wasted a pick.

I was just going to say,
We didn’t draft a receiver last season in the first round, and I don’t see it happening again.
Unfortunately I don’t see McClain falling to us, but I’d even almost rather have Dan Williams than Golden Tate. I just see us taking defense once again. Hell, I could even almost see us trading down over drafting Golden Tate.
Second round, maybe.

I'm totally on the draft Golden Tate Bandwagon, but...
We need an ILB in the first round. Brandon Spikes, anyone??
But I would love to grab him in this draft maybe 2nd but more likely 3rd round. For some odd reason I feel he’s going to be available late second round early third due to he’s not combine “sexy”. I see a lot of teams looking at him as more of a slot or #2. Slots or #2’s aren’t first round draftees as we all now.
Also, it looks like the tuna is going to be here for the long haul and with that said he’ll be overseeing the draft. As we all know he hasn’t drafted an ILB yet and he’s definitely due. Also it’s no secret he doesn’t draft WR’s in the first round, gosh Mcshay of all people should know that!
But man to have DaBess, Ronnie Brown, and Tate lining up in formation would be too much for my heart. He’s got the brains and acumen of Hartline (Notre Dame) and agility and a bit more speed than DaBess! He’s also definitely a “Parcells Guy” super smart and extremely hard working. Like I said I’m on the band wagon cause love what he brings to the table, is the prototypical Parcells guy and will most likely be available for the dolphins on draft day cause I think he’ll fall to the third round.

LB yes but DT can wait til 2nd or 3rd at latest
We need a FS or LB in the 1st
Do our recievers exist? Ginn crawls out the hole, Bess is stumbling but hope is not lost.

I like Spikes but......
I heard he is not the best coverage LB, and thats what we need at ILB. he is smart but if he cant defend against the pass he maybe another Channing Crowder (God I hope not). I just want to draft a Ray lewis type guy into our LB corps. If not a LB defitnely a NT. We need one bad. I to shore up our rotation at DT until he is ready to take the job fulll time. Also defense will defitnetly be drafted in the first two rounds. But crazier things have happened, no one reallly saw Pat White being drafted as high as he did and especailly by us, ya know.

Yep. He wants his #1 pick on the field as soon as possible
And wideout is a position that can take a while to develop (see: Patrick Turner).
My sleeper receiver in this draft is Mike Williams, so if we pass on Benn and Damian Williams in the second round, we might look for the former Orangeman in round three.
I should mention that I think Patrick Turner is going to be an outstanding receiver for us. I can understand why our FO would be hesitant to put a developing player like him on the field when we are in a playoff hunt.

You're thinking of Demaryius Thomas
and he’s a complete freak athletically, but will take about 3-4 years to develop, possibly more, because he doesn’t run routes. He runs straight upfield. That’s it. He’s about as unpolished as you can get for a WR, and would end up inactive for most of the first few years of his career.

Benn is looking that dude, and in my opinion he seems more like a Parcell’s guuy. Stocky frame who gets the YAC. I am not on the Tate bandwagon at all, we have enough 5ft11 in receivers, Benn is 6’2 and weighs 215, and he will probably put on 10-15 lbs of muscle as he develops in his career. And..he is a beast.

I always feel like McShay's first couple of mocks are heavily influenced by other drafts
He had us taking a WR this time last year, then shit the bed in late-Feb. and had us taking Connor Barwin, then had us taking Brian Cushing, then had us back to Hakeem Nicks.
I must say Hakeem was the only other player I really wanted besides Vontae Davis. I practically had dreams about Nicks and Ginn playing together.

Funny you mention Harvin
I spent a fair amount of time on the NFL.com Dolphins draft board (Sorry — I didn’t know the Phinsider existed at the time), and none of the Dolphins fans there wanted to touch Harvin with a 10-foot pole. I also took an unbelievable amount of grief for suggesting we should draft Vontae Davis.
I think the reason people are spraying in their shorts over Tate is because he is a similar player to Percy Harvin (not as fast as Harvin, of course, but similar in playmaking ability).

Here's the problem
Sean Taylor was a great football player as well as a phenomenal athlete. Taylor Mays is only one of those things, and it isn’t the football part. He has terrible ball skills, takes bad angles, is an extremely poor tackler, and really has no instincts for the game. I’ve never seen such a ballyhooed (love that word) safety get such a horrible jump on the ball. His speed makes up or it most times, but that’s college, and that half second it takes for him to realize where to go will get him killed at this level. I’m all for passing him up completely when we draft.

And even then you can probably wait until the 3rd round to grab one, we need to upgrade our LB squad ,JT and Peezy are getting up there and Akin can be upgraded also, plus i think the Phins need a vet WR, because no one has any idea how any of these guys will turn out, and i don’t want to wait 3 year for someone to maybe develop.

I am probably one of the few people here who actually likes Cody
And I especially like the idea of drafting him in the second, since at that point there’s a bit less risk involved in taking a boom-or-bust player like him.

If Spiller is on the board...
and you dont take him…at that value…..you have no diea what your doing. This kid has the talent to be a MAJOR FACTOR in a football game….hes the kinda playmaker we need. Ricky will be gone after his rookie year…and who knows on ronnie..
CJ Spiller is equal to about 10 Leon Washingtons….put it that way.

Spiller has to be taken if he falls past the 20's
I have a feeling he’ll be taken alot sooner.. my money is on KC or Seattle. Then both teams could form their offense off of fast scatbacks. Since KC has a speedy back in Charles and Seattle has Justin Forsett

I'm really not that big of a college football fan...
However, I know some of the players and I say we get Dez. However, Parcells hates drafting WR’s in the 1st round.
But if we feel that a team is about to draft Dez, we should trade them our first, Ginn, and Turner to get the pick.
However, I see us getting our star WR in FA. I don’t know who, but I know we’ll get one.

the way todd's draft sets up
you either take Spillner or trade down 5-10 spots and snag williams or Cody. Personally I hope either McClain or Spikes is there or Bowman even being a penn st lb

For everybody who wants C.J. Spiller..
he would be a great pick..and we could argue that we are drafting for depth. Think about Spiller, ronnie, ricky, and cobbs all in the wildcat somehow!
But idt we would have a chance at getting Spiller. He may be dynamic, and I think he will be waaaaaaaay better than Reggie Bush, but in the end the Trifecta will pick up somebody on the defensive side of the ball. They do not have a good track record of picking offensive skill players in the first round.
Spiller would be my choice in the 1st round if Dez was not still there, because I think the draft is deep in all of our other needs.
What is your honest opinion on Spiller?

I would be surprised if....
The trio take a WR in the first round. They know we need that big playmaker, but when has Bill taken a WR in the 1st. Never…we have a lot of other holes to fill for the long term. WE all know how WR’s take some time…some of them. We could go Linebacker…a play maker..someone who can cover the wes welkers of the world. We don’t have like backers that can cover. None of them can… But none the less I’m excited about our options, should be in the thick of things..20+ I think we might get a WR in the 2nd, but we might go TEnd there. Who knows with our trio…but we trust them don’t we? yes.

Tate? Really? In the first? Then again, he does have Clausen, the best QB in the draft, falling to 23, Bradford, a spread QB with a weak arm to begin with, coming off 2 shoulder injuries, going 7. He’s also got Carlos Dunlap, the laziest player in the country going 6 (albeit, going to Oakland, which could probably happen). I don’t understand how he has Jacksonville taking a virtually unknown LB (over hometown guy Spikes, no less), when their cheif concern is trying to sell tickets. I don’t really agree with a whole lot in that mock, including QB-starved STL going with a DT (after taking DL 2 of the last 3 years).
I have to say I’d be really mad if we took Tate at that pick, with Spiller on the board, as well as Damian Williams and Arrelious Benn available (and better). I’ve seen Tate play, and he’s a combo RB/WR, something that Spiller is better at by a good margin. But this is McShay, and he’s got a ton of good college players that don’t project well, mixed in with a bunch of soon-to-be workout warriors. Thanks for posting, I love laughing at some of these..

I know you're a HUGE fan of Todd McShit
I pretty much gave up on this mock when I saw he had Dunlap going that high, but I posted it anyway because at least it gives us something to talk about.
The only thing I like about Tate is he reminds me of a faster O.J. McDuffie (all-time fave player). That’s about it, though. I think I am more interested in cementing the front seven in the early rounds of 2010.
Unless something crazy happens for us (like Vince Wilfork coming to town, for example), I am sticking with the Vols’ NT as my #1 pick.

I like Tate well I am an Irish fan but
even though he is 5"11 he has a great vert and can catch balls over corners who are 6"2-3
kid without a doubt is a playmaker but I hate to say it cause I love Tate but I would rather have a guy like Benn we need that big physical type of wideout but 85% of mocks I have seen so far have us taking Cody the other 15 said Williamsand I would not argue with taking a NT or a LB like Spikes with the first pick but if we do have plans to take a wideout then we better make the right move cause we dont need another Ginn 2.0

And he may hit the market
he was severely unhappy before the season, and although he’s saying the right things now, I think he’ll be looking for greener pastures come the offseason (especially if Denver collapses their way out of the playoffs). I’m starting to come around on him from my previous stance (don’t want the headache) because I have faith in Sparano and Co. to reign in his personality and get the most out of him. He’s definitely tops on the list of potential FA’s at the WR position for me.

Interestingly, Mel Kiper lists Tate as a more polished receiving prospect that Harvin
I am intrigued to see what Golden runs at the combine. He’s a second round pick right now, but if he shows up and runs mid-4.4, he’s going in the first round.

I agree Sam.
I definitely think that we should get a NT in round 1, I like Dan Williams better than Cody. Get some more depth there and give him a year to learn from Feruson before he retires. If he’s available in the 2nd round, I would take Benn, even if we did get a #1 in FA. It wouldn’t be bad to have 2 dynamic playmaking receivers on the team, and since it usually takes a couple years for a WR to develop, this would give us either a replacement or a compliment for our FA wideout acquisition.
But after that, I think we need to use the rest of the draft for the defense, and shore up our LB and FS.

Golden Tate should be a Dolphin
what’s up Phin Fans…this is my first time posting on the Phinsider so show some love ha
I couldn’t agree with some of you more on drafting our “GOLDEN” ticket.Tate is the kind of fottball player Parcell loves.Tate is no DIVA and plays harder then most players I’ve seen.Tate is Mr YAC…he can turn plays into TDs.Not only does Tate have great hands, but you wont ever see him run out of bounds.Tate will get us that extra yard…playing with heart and toughness every game(unlike Ginn). Some people say he’s to short to be a number 1…I would say those people are crazy…Tates vertical makes up for his so called lack of height.Miami needs a real play maker, and Golden Tate can change a game.He always seems to make the BIG play. This Guy has the skills, heart, and attitude to help change a team.Lets not forget that he has only played WR for two year and will only get better every year. One more skill set Tate has that makes him even better for Our Dolphins is his ability to play in the WILDCAT…I think we would be stupid to pass him up.
If I could have the draft my way…
1.Golden Tate or Spiller(depending on what we do with Ronnie)…maybe one of them will drop to the second round. After that its all about Defense. We have to draft Tate though!
As far as FA…we should do everything we can to get Demeco Ryans from the Texans. He’s a serious stud and good leader.
If we decided to get a WR through FA/trade and not the Draft..
1.I would do anything to get Andre Johnson, but I don’t see him leaving the Texans. He’s the best WR in the NFL and a team would be crazy to let him go.
2.The other FA WR I would love to get is Brandon Marshall
