Ask Music City Miracles

Hello Dolphins fans,

I am Jimmy-the head writer over at Music City Miracles- here to solicit your questions about this Sunday's game.  Every game from here on out is an elimination game for the Titans, and I am sure you feel about the same way as Dolphins fans, even though your odds are much better than ours.  Thanks for beating the Jags, by the way.

Anyway, leave any questions you have about the Titans below and me or someone from the site will do our best to answer.  Thanks!

Ok, I got a few questions for you.

1) What is the status on Vince Young playing? Last thing I heard was that he was day to day and that he might be limited on plays. How do you think your chances are increased/decreased if Kerry Collins has to come in?

2) How has you’re guys’ run defense been this year? I know you pretty much shut down Steven Jackson last week, but with his back injury and the inept way the Rams O-line was playing, it didn’t really take a whole lot to shut him down. How well do you think you will be able to stop a healthy Ricky Williams behind our O-line?

3) The Dolphins CBs have played pretty good so far this year, but our biggest weakness has been our safety play (read: Gibril Wilson) and covering TEs over the middle and play action passes. How effective have the Titans been using those types of plays?

4) How do the Dolphins shut down (or at least limit) Chris Johnson? I know it’s damn near impossible to shut down someone of his skill, but how do we go about limiting the damage he does to us? And if we do manage to limit his productiveness, can your passing game pick up the slack?

5) Aside from Chris Johnson, what else do the Dolphins have to do to win this game?

I'll give this a shot

1) If I was a betting man, I’d bet money on VY starting this week. Young has been doing very well and Fisher is the type of coach that doesn’t like to disrupt anything when it’s going good (see Collins/Young situation last year). I think our chances are definitely increased if we have to play Collins. He’s no threat to run, and most people believe that since you don’t have to spy Collins as opposed to VY, the run game suffers.
2) The run defense is the only part of the defense I don’t really worry about. Very few teams have gotten sustained success against our running game so far this year. Credit that to a pretty solid linebacking core, a decent d-line, and Nick Harper’s only ability; tackling.
3) This is the first year I can remember where our receivers are looking better than our tight ends. However, VY and Scaife go way back. Don’t be surprised if they do try to throw it up the middle. Play action passes are something to worry about too, due to defenders biting in anticipation of CJ’s speed. However, a Titan’s play action does not have a devastating effect yet. (see Manning)
4. You can shut him down, but it’s going to be really difficult. Keep him from breaking into the second level and that’s a success. Most teams have been putting 8, and sometimes 9 guys in the box. Don’t let him get to the side, he’s the best at turning that corner. Try to make him run up the middle and clog the inside zone blocking. And pray.
5. If Vince is in the game, you have to keep him from converting third downs. He does it very well with his legs, as always, and for some reason, his arm looks pretty good this year too. On offense, if it was me, I would use the wildcat to look for the big play every now and then. If you watched (I think) the Jets game earlier this year, the Titans looked like they were completely lost on one play, and that could be the difference in this game.

Great, thanks for the answers!

One other quick question I just thought about. How has your O-line been against the pass rush? We have a couple of crafty veterans in Jason Taylor and Joey Porter, as well as a couple of up and coming pass rush monsters in Cameron Wake and Randy Starks. Has your O-line been able to give Vince Young/Kerry Collins some pretty good protection?

The O-line

I would say they’ve been decent in the run game (CJ is so fast, I feel like most teams could block for him), but the pass game has actually been pretty good. The QB’s get a decent amount of time. However, your D-Line is very good. Taylor is a beast, Porter is incredible, and I remember Randy Starks showing some flashes during his time in Tennessee. I’m not very familiar with Wake, but he could be a cupcake and you guys would still have a stellar line. It should be an interesting matchup, for sure.

by Great Paperclip on Dec 15, 2009 7:03 PM EST up reply actions

Wake is a "rookie" for us.

He was in the CFL for a few years and was the leagues sack leader. This is his first season in the NFL, so he could technically be considered a rookie.

As far as his effectiveness, he has gotten 5.5 sacks, 1 forced fumble, 15 qb pressures, and 4 qb hits on only around 109 snaps. That’s very similar production to what Porter and Taylor have gotten so far, on about 400 snaps less. He is also the one who sacked Garrard last week on the Jags last play, and the one who got a hit in on Brady a couple weeks ago that made him throw that interception.

My two cents:

Titan fan, wanted to add a note here. I think the Phin’s D-line vs. the Titan’s O-line is the key matchup of this game. The Titan’s O-line is behind only Indy for fewest sacks allowed (12) this season. The Phin’s D-line has a very strong and balanced addiction to sacks. With VY being less mobile (hammy), our slim playoff hopes rest in the big ugly’s hands (and core).

This one's for you, #9.

This doesn't have to do with our match-up but I'm curious to know how you would answer it....

What factor(s) would you contribute to your team starting 0-6 after having a 13-3 season last year?

Here's 1 answer

I’m sure others will follow: We had a few bad decisions early in the year, coupled with some bad luck and injuries.
Pitt: We lost because of special teams. A solid kicker 99% of the time, Bironas missed two field goals. One of them could have been the difference.
Houston: Had a big offensive day, then let Houston stay in the game. Had a chance to tie or win at the end, and Kerry Collins did a ghost fumble.
Jets: Special teams got us down early in the game 14-0. After pulling close later, the team stalled out. Injuries begin.
Jags: Terrible effort. Missing Finnegan hurt here and nothing was going right in this game.
Colts: Two rookies CB’s against Manning. Pretty much the results anyone would expect.
Patriots. Again, two rookie CB’s against Brady. In the snow. Offense doesn’t know what snow is. Blowout ensues.
After the bye week, they’ve played pretty solid. Special teams (not including Bironas, who has returned to being great) has been a question mark, as has the secondary (we actually did better with our secondary sans Nick Harper) but everything else seems to be clicking under the resurgence of Vince Young.

Do you think that maybe Collins was a big part of all of it?

Because once Vince came in, it was completely different.

Collins did his best, but...

For some reason, he just hasn’t enjoyed the success he had last season. His big strength last year was not turning over the ball, and this season he was unable to avoid the turnovers. He also looked terrible on most third downs, and there were many instances this season where I felt he was too eager to throw the ball out of bounds. That being said, his receivers didn’t do him any favors, and the defense was suffering badly with their losses.

by Great Paperclip on Dec 15, 2009 6:42 PM EST up reply actions

I thought he even looked bad when he went in the Rams game the other day.

I didn’t watch the whole game but I can’t say he looked good. I don’t want to use the term washed out, but you know what I mean?

Yeah

I don’t want to say he got his check and decided to phone this season in, because not all of the games are on him. However, I agree with you. I was at the game last Sunday, and he looked almost disinterested in the first half before actually putting a pretty decent second half together. I think the deal is, if Collins plays, expect to see a healthy dose of Bironas.

by Great Paperclip on Dec 15, 2009 7:05 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah, exactly.

I just don’t see why Collins ended up like this. He could be made he lost his starting job, but I don’t find that being the case because he wasn’t too “sharp” when the season started. Maybe he’s just losing it. You gotta feel bad for the guy, in some extent, he’s had an up and down career.

Here's a few:

I don’t know how well the Titans are covered nationally, but hopefully there’s one in here that’s news to you guys.
Michael Roos: Just a solid tackle. Got him in the second round of the draft and he has far exceeded expectations. There was a link to an article today where Ogden said he was on of three tackles he “enjoys watching.”
Cortland Finnegan: Not an unknown by any stretch of the imagination, due to his feisty (or dirty, for you Texans fans) playing style, he even made the pro bowl last year. However, I’m not sure how much coverage he gets nationwide, or how familiar phins fans are to him, but you’ll most likely see him on Sunday.
Ahmard Hall: The Sarge, as we call him. He’s questionable for this game, but he’s been a good fullback for the Titans running backs over the year. I fear when he catches/runs the ball though-he is a little fumble prone at times.

Chris Hope is solid

Last year we all thought Michael Griffin was on his way to being a star, but this year he has been really shaky (and Hope has been at times this season also). They seem to be playing better of late but early in the year they were absolutely horrible.

I have a bit more confidence.

The Dolphins are primarily a running team, but the Titans stop the run well. I’ll be pretty surprised if Henne can beat them with his arm w/out getting much support from R. Williams. And then, too, the fact that the Jags damn near pulled it out after having been blown out in the first half last week was encouraging. Because the Jags actually suck, and the Titans pounded them into meat when their Secondary got healthy again. And then, too, if there’s one thing that Nick Harper does well, it’s play against the run. So, bottom line, I don’t see the ‘Phins running for more than 50 yards total all game. With that, I have trouble imagining their offense can succeed. Yes anything can happen, but that’s why I’m not as worried as I could be.

Personally, I’m much more worried about the Chargers game. The Chargers air attack is the kind of thing that has just KILLED the Titans all year. Without Haynesworth, they’re just not getting the push up front that would compensate for the total inability of Nick Harper.

Funny you say that

But I feel Henne has shown enough improvement that you guys might actually be surprised by what Henne can do against your defense. I’m not saying your D are a bunch of chumps, but you did mention no Haynsworth means no pressure and we all have seen what Henne can do with time. If anything it can end up like the Miami vs New England game round-2.

by Weecho85 on Dec 16, 2009 1:38 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah, Weecho is right

If you underestimate our aerial attack and what Henne can do against your secondary, you’re going to be in for a treat.

Matty posted some numbers in a front page story mentioning that Finnegan has allowed like 68% of passes thrown his way to be completed, and that Nick Harper has allowed over 70%. Our receivers are nothing special, though still underrated. If Henne can tear apart New England’s secondary and then Jacksonville’s, he’ll tear yours apart too if you let him.

Also, Jacksonville’s defensive line/run defense is on par with yours. We ran for more than double your estimate against them.

by Dave.Phuller on Dec 16, 2009 3:06 PM EST up reply actions

I saw those numbers.

I don’t know that I believe them because annecdotally I just do not remember that many passes getting completed, especially on Finnegan, and I’ve watched or listened to every play of every game all year long. But I definitely saw the article where they were posted.

With that said, what you say is definitely true. I’ve not watched much of Miami this year. The national media have portrayed them as a “run-first, run-only” team. However, if Henne throws all over Tennessee, then the Dolphins will definitely win. That’s how EVERYONE has beaten Tennessee, all season long.

DannoE

"You may say I'm a dreamer, but I'm not the only one."

by DannoE on Dec 16, 2009 3:37 PM EST up reply actions

That's very good to hear

I have a feeling Henne will have a productive game against them. That being said, I see this being extremely close. I feel as though you won’t be able to stack the box when all is said and done, and Ricky will grind out very tough yards on his way to 75-80 of them when your defense is good and tired. Lex will run for about 15, and Polite maybe 5-10. I understand your run defense is among the best in the league and that your linebackers are nasty (not in a negative way), but our offensive line is far too physical to let that hold us under 50 yards.

I mean, look at the Jets’ run D and their rating the week before we faced them the first time on MNF. It’s doable if we control the line of scrimmage and win in the trenches.

I truly think this game comes down to internal issues: VY vs. KC. If we see the latter, I don’t think CJ alone can win the game.

But good luck to both sides, and I hope for no injuries.

Also, about Jacksonville...

Their D-Line MIGHT be on par with TN’s WHEN JOHN HENDERSON IS IN THE GAME, but without him, that’s not even close to true. Also, their LBers are nowhere near as good as TNs.

Bulluck is Excellent. He definitely is the leader on Defense.

Bulluck is not usually a Pro-Bowler because the Titans play an arch-conservative 4-3, limiting his sack opportunities, but he has been a Top 10 LBer (by pay) from a VERY cheap team for the last maybe 5 years. He also has quite a few INTs and considerable speed for a “cagey vet” type of guy.

On the other side, David Thorton is also very good, but he’s out. You’re likely to see a rookie, Gerald McGrath, who has played well but isn’t a future HOFer or anything like that. Still, the team didn’t lose much in the way of LBers when Thorton went down.

As a side note, the Titans’ base D is actually the Nickel because very few teams try to pound it right at them. Most teams line up in 3-wide most of the game, making the Nickle CB a de facto starter and the MLB a de facto 2nd stringer. This is why the Titans don’t draft MLBs in the 1st round. That said, the starting MLB is Stephen Tullock, who is undersized but very fast and an excellent tackler.

The thing that makes him so dangerous is that you can contain him on 95% of his carries and he still goes for 150. If I were coaching a defense against him I would stress the absolute necessity of playing your assignments and wrapping-up.

Speaking for myself

I’m a little worried, but it’s a game the Titans can win. That being said, it will CJ being solid, and the defense getting the ball back to him to win. If you didn’t see the Colts game, the Titans probably would have won had it not been for turnovers and other missed opportunities, but that’s why football is football. I've noticed on the blog

A lot of Titans fans have taken a liking to him. He’s a pretty solid route runner who has had pretty good hands while filling in for the number one receiver (Justin Gage). I’m hoping he breaks our receiver curse, he has the tools to do it and has had a pretty solid rookie campaign, especially when you consider the style of offense Fisher plays.

Britt has been a stud

as GP said, the Titans have had terrible luck in the receiver department, but Britt looks like the real deal. He runs good routes, can go up and get the ball, and is a really good blocker. He is already easily the best rookie receiver the Titans have ever had.
