2009 Perspective X

I've been having computer issues this week, so I have not been able to prepare and publish this on my normal Thursday schedule.   Sorry for the delay if you were wondering where the Perspective for this week was.

This week's Perspective is going to focus on Chad Henne, and the development of the "franchise" quarterback.  I am going to do something that is hard for me to do, but it will let us, as fans, see some comparable stats, and maybe continue to grow our hope for the kid.

I think by now, you may have figured out what I am going to do.  Chad Henne currently has nine starts behind center for this franchise.  Another quarterback started nine games in his first year taking the snaps.  The difference, of course, is that Chad Henne is a second year player, while the other quarterback was a rookie.    The other quarterback is, obviously, Hall of Famer Dan Marino.  I don't really want to start comparing the two, as there is only one Danny, but at the same time, it could be interesting.

I am not going to tell you which quarterback is which until the end of this.  I will just discuss the statistics of each.  Also, Marino appeared in two games and Henne played in four (three last year, one this year) when they were not starting.  I have thrown those games out, so we will only look at the nine games the two actually started.

Star-divide

Quarterback One's nine games as a starter resulted in a 57.8% completion percentage, on 163 for 282 passing.  In comparison, Quarterback Two was 150 for 257 passing, a 58.3% completion rate.  Not much of a difference between the two, with QB #1 throwing the ball 25 times more than QB #2, with 13 more completions.

Yardage is a little different, with Quarterback #1 throwing for 1755 yards, for a 6.22 yards per attempt average.   Quarterback #2 threw for 1970 yards, or a 7.67 yards per attempt average - almost a yards and a half better than QB #1's average.

During his nine starts, QB #1 threw nine touchdowns and seven interceptions, as compared to Quarterback #2's seventeen touchdowns and five picks.  Here, again, Quarterback #2 holds a sizable advantage over #1.

In the sacks department, Quarterback #1 was sacked seventeen times during his first nine starts.  Meanwhile, Quarterback #2 was sacked nine times during those first nine games.

Rushing, Quarterback #1 ran for 10 total yards, on 8 tries, with a long run of 12 yards.  Quarterback #2, in contrast, ran for 45 yards on 28 carries, and 2 touchdowns.

Quarterback #1 does have one fumble where as Quarterback #2 has none, but QB #1's fumble was recovered by the Dolphins, so they are tied with zero fumbles lost.

Through all of these stats, Quarterback #1 has a QB Rating of 76.5.  Quarterback #2's QB Rating is 96.6, once again a large advantage.

The final comparison is with the win/loss record of each quarterback.  Quarterback #1 won six of his first nine.  Quarterback #2 won seven of his first nine starts.  Not much of a difference in the wins department.

Obviously, since Henne is 6&3 in his starts this season, that makes him QB #1, and Marino QB #2.  While Danny obviously had a better touchdown count and fewer picks, the two aren't all that far apart.

This is a short perspective this week, with a basic look at how Henne has done in his first nine games as compared to the greatest quarterback to ever play the game (high comparison for a young QB).  Given the current Dolphins' desire to be a power running team, I am not surprised at the big differences between Marino and Henne, but I am excited about the similarity in some of the numbers.  However, I'll let you guys delve into what these stats mean - if anything.  I'll just provide the basic raw data.

Hopefully Henne can get his seventh win this week in Jacksonville.

I will never truly say Henne is Marino, or the Next Marino, or anything like that

I just thought it was interesting to look at their statistics over their first nine starts…Simply to see how Henne is doing when compared to a true franchise guy versus the more recent QBs we’ve had and would compare him too (i.e., Lucas, Fiedler, Beck, Griese – Brian, not Bob -, etc. etc.)

nice

it was tough to tell who was who until the TD stat, because I know Henne doesn’t have 17 TD’s lol. Marino was better in every category, but he was also the best to ever drop back, so the fact that Henne is even close in comparison is a promising thing.

Question for you though… How many 4th Q Comebacks did Marino have in his first 9 starts? We know Danny was the King of the Comeback, but Henne is off to a fast start in that area, and already shows the poise and sense of the moment that so many great ones have..

i agree

it’s nice to have that feeling again. if he continues to progress the way he has been, he has a chance to be a VERY good qb in this league.

I like his mental toughness and short memory. The guy makes a bad play then turns around and fires a twenty yar

bullet to Camirillo. I believe he has already won this team over and in time wil be more consistant with his throws and vocal in the huddle. I can’t wait till this game really slows down for him because he will be deadly. He’s already stated that each week the game seems to be gettting slower and he’s beginning to read the defense a little better. Hats off to CP10 for being an awesome teacher of the gameand Henne for being an outstanding student. Hopefully we see CP10 on the sidelines as a mentor next year. GO DOLPHINS! GO ROBOT!!!

I'm all about henne

a little more work on his touch passing and we got a winner!!! I agree cp10 has been a great help to henne, and would love to see him on the sidelines now but i sorta understand sparano s reasoning. but cant we have him in the booth?

Comp to our other Franchise QB

Bob Greise.
Note: These stats are for 12 games for Greise opposed to 9 games for Henne. Maybe some can post a 7-7 game comparison.
Completion percentage – CH:57.8%, BG: 50.2%
Att/Comp ratio – CH: 163/282, BG: 166/331
Passing YDs – CH: 1755 yards, BG: 2005
Passing Avg – CH: 6.22 YPA, BG: 6.1
TD/INT ratio – CH: 9/7, BG: 15/18
Sacks – CH: 17, BG: (Not recorded)
Rushing ATT/YD – CH: 8/10, BG: 37/157
Fumbles lost – CH: 0, BG:2
QB Rating – CH: 76.5, BG: 61.6
Win/Loss record – CH: 6/3, BG: 4/8

Griese was an AFL All Star that year, going on to 6 Pro Bowls (2 All Pro), 3 Super Bowls (winning 2) and Super Bowl MVP. Yes the game has change significantly since 1967 and some 2nd and 3rd string QB’s today have better stats than Greise, but it is still fun to compare numbers.

I was going to put Griese into this

But I couldn’t find a by game break down to be able to get just his first 9 starts. Overall, again, very similar stats. I like it.

Impressed

I gotta give it up for henne, he sizes up fairly decent with Marino, but I can understand why he passing yards, touchdown and so forth we much higher than Hennes in the same amount of games. The R&R express. If Don Shula had this tandem he would be all over it, praising the football gods that he got another larry Csonka/ Mercury Morris backfield. Danny boy had nothing in the backfield to talk about, and his receivers were ten times better. But the defense sucked way more. So its give and take.

Best QB ever?

It’s tough picking a “greatest” quarterback because teams win games. Marino never played with a “complete” team. He never had a great running game; his o-line had some great pass protectors (Sims, Webb), but they never were very good at run blocking (except for Dwight Stephenson, who was great at everything, but he was gone in 1987). Marino never had a great defense either — in ‘84 and ’85, Miami would just blow out in front of most teams, forcing them to play catch-up. Marino may or may not be the “King of Comebacks” — I remember a few games where he blew the comeback by throwing interceptions that were returned for touchdowns, but he could also score with one throw from essentially anywhere on the field, and he was the most feared quarterback in the league for that. I think Marino’s biggest competition for the “greatest” is Joe Montana. But — and, yes, everyone I know has a big but — he excelled playing for great teams, complete teams, although what he accomplished in Kansas City in ‘93 and ’94 was pretty amazing considering that team was fairly average.
But imagine Marino with the Marks Brothers, Ronnie and Ricky, and the Killer B’s. Oh my God…

by Old Man Dolphin Fan on Dec 13, 2009 8:34 AM EST reply actions

And because the defense was poor...

Danny had to throw more as other teams were able to score more points. More passing TD’s because they didn’t have RB’s who could score. Funny, this forced them into being a passing team, which worked out for DM, similarly the injuries to Penne and Ronnie have forced CH to step up and he has.

QB1 abd QB2

QB 1’s receivers: Davonne Bess, Ted Ginn Jr., Greg Camarillo, Brian Hartline, Anthony Fasano, Joey Hanos
QB 2’s receivers: Mark Duper, Mark Clayton, Nat Moore, Duriel Harris, Dan Johnson, Joe Rose.

  1. should have the edge.

8-8 is a victory at this point!

have been skeptical of henne since all of you phinsiders had the henne/penne...

debates, but really, he shouldnt be compared to anyone…yet…He was brought in due to injury, so no real way of preparing for a scheduled start, and I think he has answered fairly well..I have turned from skeptical to hopeful, and am pulling for him to do well..If Miami fails anywhere down the stretch here, I dont think it will be henne’s fault…We get henne some studs, and we’ll see a different qb…Might be time to get a henne jersey..and that is the best way to support IMO……..

Just saw this on the Week 14 power rankings

14 (19) Dolphins 6-6-0 Chad Henne is one of the league’s best young QBs, as he demonstrated in the fourth quarter versus the Patriots. (Clayton)

A little early

To be making comparisons with only 9 starts its hard to lable him the Franchise QB all those 1 year wonders that happen should tell you this and im not downing Henne as i have been a fan since his days in the blue & yellow although he always has shown Poise and the ability to adapt so I do think we have A winner here but to compare him to Marino is just wrong they are two diffrent styles of QB with diffrent attributes Marino had his bullet release and Henne has his Cannon arm and unbelievable poise but Chad does show greatness.
