Draft Sleeper..and Bess's Future
As you probably know by now I'm very interested in who I believe the Dolphins will take at WR in the 2010 draft. One guy that has bypassed my predictions including myself until I read an article about him and watched his highlights is a stud by the name of Demaryius Thomas from Georgia Tech.
This guy is 6'3 230 and uses his body perfectly to shield defender and win jump balls. A guy with that size def seems to have the ability to get off the line and I have seen him display great hands and catch the ball at its highest point. Many georgia tech fans believe he is just as good as Calvin Johnson was, I personally don't think thats true but at the college level I don't think he is that far away either. He is big and physical and I have also seen him lay out some rediculous blocks on run protection. He wouldn't cost us a 1st round pick and I think could be a future no. 1 in this league with some polishing.
I also had a vision of Bess being one of the to 10 wr in the league in 2 years. What he displayed this past sunday against a team that was trying to take him out of the game plan was fantastic, especially for a second year wideout. He has the hands, and the quickness. His route running will only get better and he will only get better when we have a stud WR on the opposite side of him helping draw defenders away. He is def our future!

I'm hoping for Dez Bryant....
but he probably won’t be around when we pick so i’d be happy with an inside linebacker in the 1st this year….
Or maybe Eric Barry from Tennessee…
He is by far the best covering safety in college
Yeah. I think Berry's going to be a Chief
It’s kind of upsetting now that I think about it.

Yeah I would have loved for him to have fallen, but don't see it happening

There's going to be some outstanding talent available for us in April
If the Trifecta can have a high success rate in a shaky draft like ‘08, I can’t wait to see what they pull off in 2010, which looks to be like Disneyworld for anyone looking for defensive studs.
You know it’s going to be good when guys like Sergio Kindle, Von Miller, Brandon Spikes, Eric Norwood, Carlos Dunlap and Nate Allen are being projected as SECOND rounders.

Very true
But keep in mind that the other teams have to potential to improve at the same rate as we can with that talented of a draft. Which means the trifecta will really have to be on their A game in order to get ahead of alot of the other teams with their draft grades. I love deep drafts but it works for the other teams just as well as it does us!

I have heard of this kid b
being a Hurricane fan, I get my fare share of D Thomas highlights. Yea the kid has got some talent, I wouldn’t say a Calvin Johnson but he is good. He needs to learn to run some better routes. He tends to round them off.
but he is hard to take down
I’ve seen a couple of his games were he just bounces off of a defender then it takes couple of more defenders to bring him down.
lol the biggest knock on him is that he doesn't run ANY routes.
at all. He runs a fly and a hitch. Neither take any skill. He’s a serious project, and isn’t a better college player than Patrick Turner. I wouldn’t take him until the late rounds as a flyer… maybe.

enough with this WR stuff..
Stop trying to find the next thing in the draft, next year is the last year we have R&R.
Draft Defense, its the key to winning, anything up the middle FS/NT/ILB
Trade or through FA, get a WR, AN ESTABLISHED WR, not a youngin that needs a few years to develop
If we go out and get a top 20 WR in FA, then draft some young hungry parcells guys on defense, well all be happy. Id rather see a defense like the fins had with surtain, madison, zt, jt, marion in a few years, then get a project WR agian (ie turner)
DEFENSE DEFENSE DEFENSE
I would love Dez but...
Realize even if he is available Parcells probably won’t take him, and no matter how good your defense is, you realize that every great defense needs a lot of star players on it. Ravens have Lewis, Reed, Suggs, Nagata and still struggle against the pass. If we face a team like the Saints of Colts, we all have witnessed how difficult it is to keep them below 25 pts on offense. We need to be able to fire back and hang in there against top offensive teams and you don’t do that without wide receivers.
Look at what the steelers are without the best safety in the league. The odds of us getting a player like him are 1 in a 1,000 and it shows that a great defense takes more than just one or two players. Not saying we can’t have one, but we need to compliment it with a great offense.
We all know the Trifecta like to spend money in the trenches then on flashy players. Don’t get me wrong i would like nothing more than to get a proven WR like Brandon or Vincent but i just don’t see it happening realistically. If it did, i wouldnt be happier to be wrong but until it does we have to go with what we know, and that is that BP builds through drafts and if that ends up holding true, we should start thinking in that direction.
I agree he def is not Calvin Johnson...
but we all can also agree on the fact that you can learn route running more then toughness and good hands…and it wouldnt cost us our first round pick which is the major factor so we can still get a top player in another postiion.
Great point
I think we should go Defense first round and WR 2nd. There are so many WR coming into the draft there will be plenty of talent to go around. Everybody is nervous about this years draft because of how weak the draft wast last year. But in reality there are many more WR coming out this year then there was last year and there good to. I’ve been watching alot of college ball this season and especially paying attention to the different WR from each team and let me tell you WR is deep this year. There are just to many WR to name but there coming from everywhere. there’s at-least 2 or 3 WR from each conference in college football declaring for the draft (JR and SR). So we should definitely go defense 1st round.
Not really a sleeper though.
Ive seen some draft boards with his as the second WR listed after bryant. hows his speed though?
really?
there’s no way he’s the 2nd best WR unless we’re talking about video games.

its good for a big guy
he can get behind the secondary but he is no tedd ginn when it comes to speed think of speed on par with Boldin
Screw using a draft pic on a receiver in HOPES he makes the transition to the NFL.
Do what you have to to pick up Boldin or (even better) Bowe or some other establised ass kicker. How many receivers that were 1st or 2nd rounders last season have done ANYTHING this year?
Hayward-Bey is being outshined by Louis Murphey who was drafted like the 4th or 5th round I believe?
Johny Knox was in the 4th or 5th and hes doing well.
Austin Collie is another one who again is doing very well and was not a 1st or 2nd rounder.
If you want to use a 1st round pick on a receiver then use it to trade for Bowe.
Henne is now our leader. Lets see what the guy can do !
As usual the R&R Xpres is non stop to its next destination !
Driver of the Camarillo, Hartline & Bess fan club bus.. hop on and enjoy the ride!
We need this pass D to STEP THE F UP and do what they get paid to do!
exactly look at the WR from
Cincinnati i cant remember his name but he is tall fast physical and not predicted to leave till late 3rd early 4th round
your talking about Gilyard...
honestly the guy has the build of a quaterback, def not phsyical enough or big enough to be a star no .1 in the NFL….ultimately I agree what you guys are saying that it takes time to develop a drafted player but we are building for the future, as in the next 10 years, not the next 4. Boldin is going to turn 30 and by 33-34 he’s already nearing the end of his career if not earlier due to injuries. Bowe i would agree that yes he would be great because he is younger and shown great ability but i question his work ethic coming to camp 20 lbs overweight.
If it were Andre or Marshall i would give up picks in a heartbeat but when thinking of the thought that we can potentially have a no .1 wr for the next 10-13 years with Henne and Bess all together it makes me think that that is what Parcells was envisioning when he wanted to rebuilding this team. And of course we all know how he feels on spending big money on WR’s…
Were ot building for the next 10 years.. well yes we are but I do not think that is the main goal at this point
We have been building a young team and many of these guys are going to be comming into their best 2 or 3 years in the next year or 2. So if you decide to draft a receiver early in hopes that he will be THE #1 receiver for this team your guys who are here now have to wait another 2 or 3 years for the new #1 to become a true #1. I think we are 2 or 3 players on defense and mayve 2 or 3 players on offense away from a superbowl run. Thinking that way.. get a true #1 now with 2 or 3 years under his belt who is 26 or 27 and you have your guy for the next 3 or 4 years. If you try to draft a great receiver in the draft and he ends up a bust your screwed for ANOTHER 2+ years. Use the draft for Defense and grab Bowe or Marsha or even Boldin and sign em for a 4 year deal with killer bonuses if he preforms excelent.
Henne is now our leader. Lets see what the guy can do !

i say fix are D with the draft
and see who we can get with a trade and if were gonna use a draft pick on WR use it in the 3rd or 4th
I dont like wr's in the 1st
like has been said already its to big of a gamble for a pick thats supposed to be sure fire which is why I think we should go for cody in the first because although we may have some weak positions we don’t have to worry about retirment in another position I know many like mclain and spikes but we make do with what we have at LB for now but I do think we should grab a wr in the second round if we can get a though playmaker like Tate because wr’s are usually hard to perdict but i think he has what it takes because he really stepped up when floyd went down but thats just what i thought.
Nor do I
I’d like to lock up a NT and an inside linebacker (Nicky will kill me for saying that) in the first few rounds. I’d rather get a wr through FA and then draft one we can groom.
Or we could get Arrelious Benn in the second round and sign an inside linebacker in FA. That sounds good, too. Once our offense gets a playmaker, it’ll be … well, let’s just take a cue from “Back to the Future”:
“When we get this baby hits 88 miles per hour, you’re going to see some serious shit.”

I'LL KILL YOU!!!
lol I really think we need to get our ILB in FA. There’s TONS of them that could be available, including 2 of the best in the league in Dansby and Ryans. That’s where we find our impact LB. We can draft a NT, OLB, and WR (unless we can make a trade for a WR). I really think we should find a RB too because Ricky is gone after a year and I’m uneasy on Ronnie’s future with the team.

I like the idea of Thomas in the 3rd – assuming we also pick up a FA WR or trade for a WR. Otherwise, we’ll have to address the position with more of a “sure thing.” I doubt we can afford to take two WR’s in the first two rounds. I’m in the draft McClain – if he’s available – camp. For the sake of argument, let’s say we do draft McClain. Unless Benn or Lafell fall into our laps in the 2nd, I don’t see any great values at WR in RD 2. It seems likely that Cody might fall to us in the 2nd – with the emergence of Williams. I don’t think we can pass on Cody for a WR other than Benn.
Of course, this makes it painfully clear to me that we must do our best to address WR via trade or free agency. Say we land Jackson, Austin, Bowe, or Marshall. Then, we can seriously look at drafting:
RD 1. R. McClain
RD 2. T. Cody
RD 3. D. Thomas
If we can’t land a WR before the draft . . . we’re probably looking at stretching for WR’s OR drafting D. Bryant in the 1st and waiving goodbye to our (or at least my) beloved R. McClain.
We wake & blunder on, / wiser, on the whole, / but not more accurate.
- John Berryman from THE DREAM SONGS #263
You're not wrong to covet McClain like that. He's basically a 3-4 version of Mike Singletary (only taller)
The only area I would disagree is the part about going after FA receivers as possibly an inconvenience. I think scoring a go-to receiver in FA would be the best thing to ever happen to this FO because they can then take the #1 receiver noose off their neck and score some serious ass defensive talent in the first three rounds. Otherwise, that receiver need is going to loom every time we pick (and I could do without that, personally).
I have two draft scenarios for us if we have the luxury of a #1 wideout come draft time
1) McClain falls to us in round one because Denver loses Brandon Marshall, shits the bed and drafts Dez Bryant. We have a legitimate chance at McClain because most of the teams in front of us won’t draft an ILB in the first round.
If Ro lands in South Beach, we can either look to score a beast OLB like Sergio Kindle or Jerry Hughes in round two, or we can make a play for a two-gap blob like Terrence Cody (who could very well fall).
2) Josh Mishandles (thanks, WalterFootball) takes McClain and pimps us. Like I mentioned before, ILB isn’t as hot a commodity in this draft as OLB and DT, so we can get Dan Williams in the first round and then look for Brandon Spikes in round two (assuming we haven’t addressed ILB in FA).
I can actually see Dan Williams going in the first half of round one if he has a good combine. And a lot of people will kill me for this (Nicky, especially) but I still like Terrence Cody. I like the idea of him playing in our system. I like the idea of pairing him with Soliai and ruining the life of Jets running backs for the next decade. That said, he needs to come down in weight a bit before I’ll completely back him (340 pounds would be nice). I want a leader/playmaker at linebacker (don’t we all), but I am a bit more concerned with anchoring our 3-4 than your average Dolphins fan.
The draft I’ve had in mind for the last month or so has been Cody in the first round, Spikes in the second. Some people think it’s flawed, but I’d love for our defense to go in that direction. Just my opinion.
Drinking the Vontae Davis #21 orange Kool-Aid. We've got a new shutdown corner in South Beach!
ew Cody is such a slob lol
I just can’t envision him being successful in the NFL after watching him take plays off and suck wind all game long in college. He dominates, sometimes, based on sheer size, but that doesn’t do much for you if your technique sucks and your effort is nonexistent.

Definitely all fair points
I’d like to see more a consistent motor out of him. I think our FO could shape him into something dominant, but if we want a NT with a relentless motor, we should just head in Dan Williams’ direction. That man is a complete bastard on the football field.

I agree
Drafting Williams or Cody in the first round and going after Spikes in the 2nd would be awesome. it would solidify our defense for awhile. Plus we can try to get Thomas or another WR in the 3rd. Maybe. I think if our defense was more solid we could win more games. THe offense is improving and Chad is starting to grow into his own. We can get a WR in FA. But the defense, if it shuts down other offenses ala 2000 Baltimore Ravens, I wont care if we average 13 points a game.
i agree
We have other needs than WR early in the draft…plus there is alot of talent coming out of the draft in later rounds. IMO its too much of a risk to take a WR in the first round.

Im still sold on Cody
I think if we give him A year learning from our crafty veteran he could shake A lot of his inconsistancies and it would give him time to shape up just like last season helped Henne granted Cody wont be learning from a Rhodes Scholor candidate but it wouls sure help I believe that Miami would be best for Cody . The second round however I think they will look at LB’s and WR’’s and draft which ever position has the best player which I believe will be A LB which Bill has yet to draft but always has with every team.
