Trust...

I'm deciding to do another type of post before I go back to my hating and loving of different positions. This post is about how I feel trust falls into my love for the Miami Dolphins. I've found it hard to develop a trust for players on the team with regards to how they perform in crucial moments, but nonetheless I've developed a list of players I trusted last year and how my trust has evolved to this current year.  I have a player from Offense and Defense that were my most trusted players of the year, so on to my list:

Last year:

Offense: Chad Pennington

Chadpenningtondolphins_medium

I jumped on the Pennington bandwagon quite early last season. After the Patriots game I was sold and it wasn't for his play during that game, it was for his ability to step aside and let Ronnie Brown steal the show. I admired his poise, leadership and all out ability to earn my trust as a game manager. I hate quarterbacks that throw picks like crazy and last season Chad only threw 7 during the regular season, that made me trust that he wasn't going to give it to the other team when we needed to keep the ball and do something with it the most. There were many times when I had no finger nails left after nervously hoping we would win games, which we did and most the time they were extremely close. During the close games I had more confidence in him than I could any other quarterback on any other team. He had an insane ability to manage the game and do what needed to be done when it was most needed. Chad Pennington was my most trusted player last season and there are many times this year where I find myself very nostalgic for the one year when Pennington was our man. I still wear his jersey these days because I acknowledge that he was one of the best things to happen to Miami in quite some time.

Defense: Joey Porter

Oakland_raiders_v_miami_dolphins_slxrw8rtv_hl_medium

I am on of the biggest Joey Porter fans you can ever find, which would explain why he is my favorite NFL player and favorite player on the Dolphins. Last year Joey was huge, bigger than life. I had more trust in Joey to keep us in games and save us games when it meant it most to the team. Does anyone remember when we were playing the Niners last year and Joey came up HUGE with a sack on Shaun Hill? Well if you forgot, watch it now. When that play happened, I went crazy. Joey saved that game, he further proved that we were going to win the AFC East. Last season Joey was the second best thing to happen to our team and after 17.5 sacks, I'll never not trust Joey, I just might not trust him as much as I used to.

This year:

Offense: Ronnie Brown

Ronnie-brown-jetsjpeg-6513a482f169818b_large_medium

I trusted Ronnie like crazy last year but after Chad Pennington went out for the rest of the season, I decided that Ronnie was my most trusted player on offense. When Ronnie runs the wildcat, it is almost sure that it is going to be great for our team. Sometimes the wildcat doesn't produce like I would like, but nonetheless Ronnie can win games out of the wildcat. The Monday night Jets game anyone? I went out and bought a Authentic Ronnie jersey after that game, he became the man in my mind after that game. I've made it clear that I hate guys that throw interceptions or fumble and Ronnie doesn't fumble like some other "great" running backs do, has he even fumbled? The nfl.com stats sheet says he hasn't and I'll take that. He fumbled once last year, once. I love Ronnie Brown and want him on our team for life, I trust Ronnie the most on offense this year and it will probably remain that way.

Defense: Randy Starks

340x_medium

^Hell yeah, take down Peyton.

Randy, Randy, Randy, you are huge this year, HUGE. I have gained so much trust for Randy Starks this year that it has became insane. He has saved the game, in my mind, once so far this year and it came against the hated Jets. I never thought I'd ever actually trust someone who played for the Titans but oh my goodness is Randy Starks awesome. Last year he had 3 sacks and this year he already has 4.5, this might just be the year of his career and I hope that he remains a Dolphin and keeps coming up huge for us. How about his Tom Brady sack today? Huge. I am now a huge Starks fan and he has earned his way as my most trusted player on defense. Keep it up Randy!

So I'd also like to get some other thoughts of mine off my chest here in this post so here:

  • A message to all the other teams in the NFL: Stop running the wildcat, or the wildhorses or whatever the hell you want to call it. You are the reason why other teams think that the wildcat is a gimmick. You are not going to be as committed to it as us and you make it look like a fluke play so stop running it. It doesn't work for you Philly and Denver, I'm pretty sure it hasn't worked for you since the Pats game. So cut the shit.
  • I'm tired of hearing about how Ginn is costing us game and how he should have caught that crucial pass during the game today. Also, it wasn't his fault that he was drafted so high, because last time I checked - he isn't the GM for the Dolphins, so give it up. He doesn't lose us games, he is one player on a team of 52 others.
  • I don't want Chad Henne to be the next Dan Marino because I actually want to win a Super Bowl and not have a million stats to look at. I want to win the big one, so no I don't want Henne to be "Marino 2.0" or the second coming of Marino. I want Chad Henne to be Chad Henne and I want Chad Henne to be a winner and a big winner at that.

So that's all she wrote. Have at it...

Good post. I agree with most of them

I’d give Henne, his family plus one of neo’s body parts to have Pennington back. Henne can throw the ball but Pennington was a gamer.

I absolutely LOVE Pennington,

but I can see the immense talent of Chad Henne and I would much rather see where it takes us than go back to the known commodity of CP10.

I can see the talent too and where it could take us, but

I’ve also seen the Ryan Leaf’s, Smith’s, Carr’s, Russel’s etc, and where that could take a team. All of them were probably a bit more talented than Henne ( 3 #1 Overall picks), but never managed to learn the mental part of the game. I’m still not sold on Henne on that regard

by MauMontaV5 on Nov 8, 2009 10:55 PM EST up reply actions

The clear difference between those QBs you listed and Henne

is that Henne doesn’t throw interceptions. He took a sack today, rather than try and force the ball into tight coverage. He was in the middle of getting strip-sacked and he managed to keep possession of the ball with his fingertips and push it forward to avoid a fumble. The kid is just plain brilliant and all we need to do is give him some receivers that can actually hang on to a bullet and we can start harvesting Super Bowl trophies.

I agree, much of that is because the plays the coaching staff is calling

are ridiculously safe. He does take care of the ball, but I want to see what happens once the CS takes the training wheels off.
No one can say he is a bust or the next Marino right now, the jury is still out but I don’t love what I’m seeing.

Yeah Sure, I won't even give you an argument about that considering he played less than

one half on that 3rd game. Not to mention he had a very good game against the Colts. But sure man, he got us on an 0-3 hole bla bla bla. And short memory my ass, before the season I was calling for the FO to name Pennington the permanent starting qb for any number of years to come, not just a seat warmer for Henne. I never wanted Henne, not after the Jets game not ever. Oh, and I sure as hell don’t want him now. I’m sure Pat White will have something to say about that next off season.

Eh,

I could have agreed with you before Henne took over, but that kid is simply as magnificent a first year starter as I have ever seen in my life. He has started a grand total of five NFL games now, and you can still count the number of interceptions on one hand… That’s AMAZING! Yes, that is totally Pennington’s doing and I am so thankful to the man for doing what he did in 2008 and for selflessly being Henne’s mentor, but now I want to see the product of Pennington’s tutelage lead us to victory.

I agree, I'm ready to give Henne a shot this season, since we're all but done.

But if he keeps playing the way he did the last 3 games, I’ll be ready to call for a prime time QB come next year’s draft. Say we pick at 12, I’d take Bradford with my eyes closed. He’s proven he is big time.

by MauMontaV5 on Nov 8, 2009 10:59 PM EST up reply actions

We must be watching completely different games

because I haven’t seen Henne play a bad game yet. I’ve seen one bad pick from him and that was it. The problems with the last few games are: 1) Receivers dropping balls and 2) Terrible play calling—like scripted roll outs of Henne when he was being heavily blitzed on 3rd downs rather than just using screens to Ricky.

Agree, but against NO, the Jets and the Patriots he was a complete

non factor. For me, and for most people in this league, that is a “bad” game. I agree that he hasn’t had a typical bad game and that’s awesome for him. But if he wants to be this team’s franchise quarterback, he has to have a bunch of good games. If we wanted to have a quarterback that doesn’t have bad games then we should keep Pennington, but we want a qb that has good and great games. Thus far, Henne has had one of those.

I appreciate how you want to put us in a giant hole with a future bust QB.. Bradford has taken 2 hits in his career, and both of them put him on the trainer’s table.. No thanks, he looks great with 5 wide open WR’s and no pass rush, but so would 90% of the country.

Braford and McCoy are two of the worst QBs coming out of college this year

Both stare down their receivers like a couple of highschoolers. They are only good because they hardly play too many good teams, no decent safeties, and they have receivers that are way above the defenses they play. Honestly, sit back and watch a game, don’t just go by their stats or watch the highlights. I used to think they were good UNTIL I STARTED WATCHING THEM. And lets face it, Bradford can’t take a hit worth a damn.

I can't believe what I'm reading

About Henne on this site. Henne has bad games because he’s a “non-factor”, and more “bad games” and should lead to him being an after-thought? Or for us to draft yet ANOTHER quarterback? Wow. That is absurd. Peyton Manning, as far as I remember, had Marvin Harrison during his rookie season (or didn’t, doesn’t matter for the sake of this argument) and still had a rookie season full of picks and “bad games”. He was still poised, still had an arm, still had the makings of a great quarterback. But he, for all intents and purposes, sucked his rookie reason.

So here we have Dan Henning, an offensive play-caller who was pretty much MADE to direct an offense for Chad Pennington, and Chad Henne is performing poorly simply because he’s not putting up monster games in what is quite basically his rookie reason.

How am I not the only one who sees the massive flaw in this mode of thinking?

Who else saw ridiculously accurate passes to Davone Bess when he was covered almost perfectly? Who else saw a load of conversions on 3rd and long because of well-timed or accurate passes to Greg Camarillo/Brian Hartline/Davone Bess? How are we to expect Henne to play any better than he does when he’s constantly being pulled for the Wildcat or for Pat White (who will never be a starting QB in this league, so cut the calls for him — which I understand even less than Henne’s detractors) when he already has average-to-subpar NFL receivers to develop rapport and rhythm with in the first place?

I am deeply disturbed by the level of fanaticism and the brash love of Chad Pennington that’s causing some PhinPhaithful around here to actually find fault in Chad Henne’s level of play this season.

Amen to that!

Here’s the kicker: How many games has Henne lost for us? I’d say none. People have been on his sack because he took a couple of bad sacks against NYJ, but if he’s not turning the ball over, I find it hard to really fault him. He has a lot to learn, but he looks like he has the make-up of a winner.

Plus the sack isn't the quartebacks fault unless

He has 4-6 seconds to throw the ball and just holds it(BEN Roethlisberger) there are six guys in front of Henne that need to block!!!!!

Agreed

Pennington was able to win games last year with essentially the same offense because he could draw upon 9 years of previous experience and outstanding accuracy. Henne is experiencing the full load at full speed for the first time, right in front of our eyes…and the defenses are not holding back. They are basically challenging the offense to make Henne beat them without the receiving corp necessary to defeat the schemes.

Rolando McClain in 2010!

by kmb8488 on Nov 9, 2009 4:50 PM EST up reply actions

hahaha you are completely right. But I'll tell you what. Outside of this blog

I stand for Henne and I actually believe he’s playing good for a rookie qb. I don’t like his rookie mistakes like the 4th time out lol, but as far as a rookie goes and what he had shown at the preseason, he’s playing pretty good. He’s not winning games but he isn’t loosing them either, and that’s ok.
The thing is, you have absolutely no idea – and I mean it- how some people around here ( regular bloggers ) loved to hate on Pennington. And when people like me would make reasonable pleas about him arriving in Miami in the middle of training camp, not knowing the playbook, not knowing his receivers or teammates overall. They would not demand anything less from him than perfection. Furthermore, aside from the football part of it, when it was obvious from just watching or reading teammate’s (joey porter for example) or Sparano’s comments about what huge an impact Pennington was on the soul of the team, they would still hate on him, one moron to the point of saying “he was reason #7 for the 08’ turnaround”. Even when it was so obvious that that team was built on heart, which he provided alongside Joey Porter and others. Plain and simple, that guy took us to the playoffs. That was premier hating right there. So for all the people who where always complaining about Pennington and could not appreciate what he did on this team, now it is time for them to be on the other side of this little game.

by MauMontaV5 on Nov 9, 2009 5:04 PM EST up reply actions

I can't argue with any of those points. Pennington was absolutely huge for us last year

I don’t know who was doing the CP10 hating around here, but it certainly wasn’t me.

I wasn’t a huge fan of Henne when we drafted him (I wasn’t a fan of any of the ’08 draft qbs, honestly), but Henne has surpassed all of the initial expectations I had for him. Learning under CP10 will do him tons of good, too.

Seconded

I’m sure most of us showed our love for Pennington, and he deserved every ounce of it. Hell, he still does.

It’s not about the love he got or anyone forgetting what he did for us. He is without a doubt one of my favorite Dolphins all-time for that. But this league is about going forward, not going back..and Henne is the forward, man.

I realize why you defend him so heavily and portray such an anti-Henne facade for the reasons you listed. But bring your pro-QB attitude into the boards. Anybody downplaying Pennington’s effect on this team is ignorant. Let them be so. But don’t slight our talented guy now at the helm because of it, ya know?
