Your Game Plan v. the Pats

Suppose Tony Sparano asks you for your input into the Offensive and Defensive game plans for New England.

Post your comments below and let's discuss the pros and cons.

If you have a real job and real job responsibilities and have no time/desire to comment, just vote in the poll below.

Options are:

  • Be creative/radical/aggressive/risky in all three areas (Offense/Defense/Special Teams). Go for broke.
  • Be creative/aggressive/risky in two of the three areas (Offense/Defense/Special Teams), play it safe in the remaining one.
  • Be creative/aggressive/risky in one of the three areas (Offense/Defense/Special Teams), play it safe in the other two.
  • Be conservative in all three areas. Keep it simple and just execute better. The Patriots are over-rated and ripe for the taking. Don't beat ourselves with fancy/risky innovations.

Poll
My gameplan is...
Go for radical changes in all three (Def, Off, ST)

Radical changes in two of three (Def, Off, ST)

Radical changes in one of three (Def, Off, ST)

Keep it simple stupid, we've got rookies out there. Just out-execute them!

My Offensive Game Plan: Unleash Tyler Thigpen in the Wildcat 2.0!

I don’t trust Pat White yet. I compare him to what Chad Henne was last year. A rookie with great skills, but too much learning curve to overcome. If we had passed on Pennington and let Henne take a turn last year, we would have seen a lot of 104 yard productions and no Ted Ginn craziness to bail us out.
I see Tyler Thigpen as a Pennington-type figure except in a Running QB body. He has more experience than White and he had to learn on the job quickly last year and acquitted himself quite well with better weapons in KC, but a worse offensive line and worse defense.
Tyler, meet your Miami version of Dwayne Bowe in Patrick Turner and your Miami version of Tony Gonzalez in Joey Haynos.
Bill Belicheck would definitely not expect Thigpen in the Wildcat (or at least a form of it).
I’m not dissing Chad Henne or claiming he is a bust or anything. In fact, in the offensive system I have developed, he could come in on third downs and really add something as well as acquire valuable game experience.
Basically, Thigpen is a way to improve the effectiveness of the Wildcat.
Long story short, though, with our shaky pass protection and our need to feed the studs in the Wildcat with some kind of passing threat, Tyler is the perfect weapon because he is a proven passer AND a proven runner.
Here are his 2008 stats:
Passing: 230-420-12 (54.8%) 2608 18 TDs
Rushing: 62-386 (6.2) 3 TDs

How do we use Tyler?
Modified Wildcat Formation:
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _TE LT C LG RG RT _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _PT
TG _ _ _ _ _RW _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ RB
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ TT
Notes:
1. You can use Chad Henne in place of Tyler Thigpen on third downs (roll the pocket right).
2. You can run the Wildcat either to the RIGHT (overload right) or LEFT (backside counter) using Ricky or Ronnie from the Wing back position.
3. Back-ups:
Kory Sheets alternates with/backs-up Teddy Ginn and either one can also come in motion right as the Wildcat back.
Brian Hartline backs up Patrick Turner. I’m deactivating Davone Bess for this game.
Lex Hilliard and Lousaka Polite are Ricky and Ronnie backups.
4. You can pass from this alignment, actually it is a spread passing formation, so the defense cannot stack the box. You get the overload on the right without compromising pass protection, since your tackles are still on the ends of the line. Think of it as Pre-Pulling Justin Smiley to the right. I envision Tyler Thigpen (6-1 225) running alot at least at first from this formation, but also being a legitimate threat to pass and he has some decent receivers-mismatches as weapons.
Obviously, you want to feed the studs (Ronnie and Ricky) either by pass or run as much as possible eventually when the box is no longer stacked.

I'm surprised that the Fins haven't used Ronnie and Ricky more on the wings, but maybe it's too unorthodox...

Great Receivers and Great Runners can either go out for a pass or run the ball.
I’m sure it would take a little practice to get the timing on the pitches down, but I would LOVE to see Ricky come in motion right, take a handoff from Thigpen, turn it up into the middle/right and have the option to pitch it to Ronnie who is coming across behind him for an end around backside left.

Oh and if the defense pinches the corners with OLB and packs the middle...

flea-flicker back to Tyler for a big pass down the middle to Haynos!

More Ideas: Substitute Nate Garner into the formation for Justin Smiley on first and second down

create a right side of the line that looks like
TE Haynos 6-8 270
LT Long 6-7 317
C Grove 6-4 300
LG Garner 6-7 325
RG Thomas 6-4 310
RT Carey 6-5 340
on third down and long, use Smiley instead of Thomas (weak on pass-protection)
Modified Wildcat Formation (First/Second Down, or Third and short):
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _JH JL JG NG DT VC _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _PT
KS _ _ _ _ _RW _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _RB
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ TT

Modified Wildcat Formation (Third and Long):
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _JH JL JG NG JS VC _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _BH
TG _ _ _ _ _RW _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ RB
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ CH

pat white...

a. has been ineffective
b. doesnt pose a threat
c. takes away momentum
d. has limited responsibility
so far. The Pats arent too worried about pat…yet…They should continue to be worried about the run game, especially since we had a bad week against the jests….

Pat White needs to make some plays in the passing game

In the game with the Jets I had to look over and tell him to lie to me and say that “it’s a good thing Pat White is in the game” lol

He has been ineffective but I think that is mostly due to the play calling as well as his one missed opportunity when he overthrew (something he has done all training camp I might add) Teddy in the ATL game … he hits that pass we are looking at both of them differently and so are other teams.

It will be interesting to see what happens though .. positive thinking even when you don’t believe in it what you are seeing helps

My Defensive Gameplan:

Pats running game is not the biggest threat and Matt Roth is gimpy. Let him sit for this one.
Employ a 4-2-5 Defense (actually a 3-3-5)
Four Down Lineman:
LDE Merling/Langford LDT Ferguson/Soliai RDT Starks/McDaniel RDE Taylor/Wake
Two Linebackers:
SLB Porter/Walden (rush or cover TE) MLB Torbor/Ayodele/Kershew
Nickel Corner or WLB: Nate Jones or Jason Allen (blitz or cover slot)
[against 2 TE or eligible OL use Ayodele or Walden instead morph back into 3-4]
Corners Davis and Smith
Safeties Culver and Clemons
Blitz corners or nickel corner or SLB and cover with safeties on occasion.

Forgot to mention that the reason for 3-4 DEs attacking from the 4-3 DE spot is PRESSURE UP THE MIDDLE

Normally you have edge rushers with their hand on the ground threatening the edges and two interior rushers getting pressure up the middle.
Using a a four man line and sending the SLB usually (covering the TE with the safeties) gives you three burly guys trying to overcome the smaller Patriot OLine up the middle while the edge is occupied by the SLB and RDE.
I think our D-Line could get some serious push against the Patriot O-Line up the middle and if we don’t get sacks, at least bat the ball down or get in Brady’s face.

With Ferguson Doubtful, Use Dotson (who has pass-rush skills) at LDT...

Alternating with Soliai
LDE Merling/Langford
LDT Soliai/Dotson
RDT Starks/McDaniel
RDE Taylor/Wake
The Key: getting push up the middle without blitzing

Special Teams gameplan

Ted Ginn on both punt returns AND kickoff returns.
If you just play the return straight up, Ginn is going to be tackled by the Kicker a-GINN.
You have to employ some kind of reverse action, fake handoff, fake a throw across the field to get the coverage team
to break out of their lanes.
My suggestion: have Ted Ginn field the kick, start heading to one side, fake a handoff to Kory Sheets in the middle of the field, and sprint to the edge.

1) PTR
2) Pressure Brady
3) Have a few big returns, which could lead to squibs or short kicks

The first I would do is put this game in the hands of our offensive line and running backs

I don’t think New England has the defensive personnel to consistently stuff our run, so I would opt to take a little pressure off of Chad Henne and employ a healthy dose of our ground game.

Now, New England will undoubtedly try to craft a scheme that will force us to win through the air. But again, I don’t think New England has the personnel to do that to us. In years past, yes, but these are different times. Since New England will run a defensive back-heavy package when Henne is under center, I think this would be a good game to run a lot of out of our base formations.

Defensively, I would pin my ears back and bring the blitz early and often. Brady is great at maneuvering around exotic blitz schemes, but this offensive line can be had, which means we should be able to meet a few times at the quarterback. This is the kind of match-up where Cameron Wake could really thrive coming off the edge. And JT is always a nightmare for NE, so I expect to see him making some big plays on defense.

The big match-up in this game will Sean Smith vs. Randy Moss. We’re certainly going to see what #24 is made of on Sunday.

And just as a side note, I’d love to see Vontae Davis blast Wes Welker out of his cleats sometime during this game.

Break the ribbs of

Wes and Randy.
I wouldn’t mind seing two personal fouls on these two early in the game. I don’t mean horse collars or face masks, what I mean is two gut wrenching, bone braking vicious lickings from our new wild beasts in the back field.
That will certainly pluck fists of feathers from their wings and cause them to crawl for mercy.
On the offensive, again, 20 yrds of wildcat, 20 yrds of regular running, 20 yrds of short passing with Ginn and Camarillo as Decoys and Hartline as the screen pass receiver.

FORGET HENNE on passes over 10 yrds. Please don’t let him give away the game again. Maximun pass play for Henne 5 to 10 yrds veretical. Don’t even think of side throws. Henne needs to roll out of the pocket to his wright, if in trouble, through it out of bounds. I am sick of him losing yards as he falls sleep at the snap. Henne does not seem to care if he completes a pass, if he scores a touchdown, if he is sacked, if he fumbles, or nothing. His demeanor on the field is so animic it kills the energy of the line. Am I wrong or is he still a mami and papi’s boy? Can he show some spine to his team mates and hold himself and his teammates accountable for errors right then and there? I would like to see Henne lead a Cheering team session seconds before the game to see if can warm up his psychi enough for the game. He seems so far away from the here and now of each down that I feel Sparano needs to focus on Henne everydown to light a candle on his butt to concentrate and execute well.
Time for tough love and accountability for Henne, enough of Bear love and huggs.
Henne you bring our 4th WIN on Sunday. Be a power leader. Start against NEPon Sunday. Let everybody see it and admire your leadership.
Let’s go Dolphins, You can do it!!!!!!!
LET’S GET READY TO RUMBLE!!!!!!!!!!

I wouldn't subscribe to anything illegal...

but there are plenty of hits that are devastating AND legal. Turn Vontae Davis loose on Welker! Sean Smith, be very physical with Randy Moss. Bump him, annoy him, get in his grill and then turn and run like your life depends on it!
