Smith v. Edwards WWF goal-line play

I've watched this video over and over and I think that Sean Smith had the ball BEFORE Edwards crossed the goal-line.

In fact, it looks like Braylon is beginning to lose possession right after he lunged backward toward the goal-line and Smith grabbed the ball with Clemons keeping Edwards out of the Endzone. There's alot of professional wrestling going on and I've got no real complaint against the line judge, but I am glad that the Fins won because it would have been tragic if they lost and the Fins were yet again victimized by a bad End Zone turnover call.

Edwards' TD

Braylon Edwards TD was indisputable. Sean, look for the ball next time!

Inconclusive. The ruling on the field stands. Miami is charged a TO.

I'd love to be a homer and all, but there wasn't enough evidence to overturn it.

Either side was gonna be mad or happy. It’s good to not be a ref sometimes.

INT

For the second wek in a row, the Phins got robbed. A TD that should have been called back.

I am still surprised that Sparano didn’t challenge this call. It could have been a huge turning point and worth risking a timeout, IMO. I’m also surprised that this is the first comment I’ve seen posted about his since the game. nice call…..

No way, I already watched it 100 times

by the time Edwards may have lost possession of the ball, the camera angle doesn’t show whats happening. There is a moment where it seems like Smith is about to rip the ball away and right when that is about to happen, the camera looses sight of the ball while Edwards breaks the plane or whatever that’s called. Remember he just has to cross the goal line even if it’s just by an inch. Bottom line, there is no – not just enough, but none whatsoever- evidence to rule that in favor of the Fins.

Not so clear...check out 1:02 from the reverse angle, it is hard to see, but looks like...

Sean Smith has possession from Braylon and Sean Smith’s shoulder is not in the endzone yet. (I admit that you cannot actually see the ball in Smith’s hands and out of Braylon’s)
The brown thing at :53 I believe is Braylon’s arm, not the ball, the ball is lower and in Smith’s possession.
Make no mistake, I didn’t think it would be overturned and I’m glad that Sparano didn’t challenge.
I’ll look at it again (and it just may be the homer in me), but Braylon’s losing possession all the way through and by then Smith has it and Braylon doesn’t.

Yeah I get where u r coming from. I too see the ball kind of coming off at some point

before he crosses the line. It’s just that there is no angle that shows what really happens. Who knows

I'd have to give it to the Jets here

as much as id hate to do it. he has possesion andeven if they both share possesion in the endzone advantage always goes to the Offense.

Laces out!

Hard to overturn it.

But I will say, if that safety had been Wilson…..Edwards doesn’t make it in the endzone.

by luvs2drnk on Nov 4, 2009 2:12 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

I beg to differ...

Clemons made a great play and ran over there FAST and worked to keep him out of the End Zone. Clemons is 6-1 210 and brings more physicality than Gibril.
If it had been Wilson, he would have been running full speed the wrong way, or came crashing in from behind in chase and they all would have tumbled into the End Zone.
Clemons made a great play.

Totally agree

Clemons made a good play standing up Edwards. I have little-to-no faith in Gerbile’s physical presence after he was dragged 30 yds by Shockey.

I think Clemons will be an excellent free safety, so let’s find an overwhelming strong safety to pair him with.

We need a #1 wideout in Miami... Arrelious Benn in 2010!

How about Strong Safety Tyrone Culver (6-1 210) good at coverage also

what a concept: solid tackler AND good in coverage.
By the way, in all fairness to Wilson, Shockey didn’t drag him for 30 yards, they just played pat-a-cake for 30 yards…he couldn’t bring him down though.

Yeah, Culver could be a bright spot for us

And regardless of what you want to call it, our free safety played patty cake/was plowed nearly 30 yds downfield on a play that should’ve barely resulted in a first down. I wouldn’t expect Wilson to match up physically with Shockey, but why did he think he could get away with tackling him high? It’s the little things that bother me about Wilson.

As of right now, I still think we look for a linebacker in the first round.

Did it ever occur to you he didn't have the angle to take him down low?

He caught Shockey from behind, and once he finally slowed him down enough, he took out Shockey’s legs. I’ll take Wilson over the rookie, until the rookie can show he won’t take himself out of plays by overpursuing. I’d rather my safety has a chance to make the tackle, whether he misses it or not, then no chance at all.

You're going to compare Braylon Edwards to Jeremy Shockey?!?!?!?

Let’s see here…
Braylon Edwards: 6’3" 211lbs
Jeremy Shockey: 6’5" 253lbs
Yeah, they’re close in size. Good comparison.

I guess you seemed to miss the 53 yard catch the Jets had in that game.

The one where Clemons totally ran himself out of the play and allowed the receiver to go for 30 more yards. Wilson is a much more physical safety, which is why he’s basically a SS playing in a FS position.

by luvs2drnk on Nov 4, 2009 10:51 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

hahah exactly, nobody had mentioned that before actually, but you are completely

right. He got lost badly. It even seemed kind of dorkish and stupid, like a blooper. He was just completely lost out there on that play.

by MauMontaV5 on Nov 4, 2009 10:59 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I know.

Everyone is so quick to throw Wilson under the bus for Clemons. But they don’t realize Clemons is a rookie. I don’t know about you, but I don’t want a rookie as my last line of defense.

by luvs2drnk on Nov 4, 2009 11:03 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

No, probably me neither. Specially if you are starting two rookie CBs.

Playing 3 rookies in your secondary against Brady and Moss will get you beaten, badly, 9 out of 8 times.

I don't think there would be enough to overturn it.

If they had called in favor of the Fins, I also don’t think that could have been overturned either. Just a real close call.

If Smith had turned around, it would have been a pick and paybe a pick 6.

This one was a close call, the N.O. call was wrong and not even close!

This was certainly a close call at best. Whoever said which ever way it was called at first probably would have been correct. It was definately not that obvious. On the other hand, the call during the NO game was pathetic. The ball came out on the 1.5 yd line and was fumbled through the endzone. Touch back Dolphins ball!! However, when you are 6-0, it usually the result of some lucky plays superimposed upon favorible referee calls!

Its too close to call, not enough evidence

sean smith is great...

but why is he always looking to other players right before the snap and not concentrating on his reciever? the jets definatly say something on the tape because the quick snaps was working against us. look back at the game and see how manytimes hes looking around when the ball is snapped

by CaliPhinsFan on Nov 4, 2009 2:13 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

I noticed that too.

He’s probably looking to see if he is lined up right.
Don’t let it happen again!
Even with the head start by Braylon, he still had great position all the way down the field

haha not the brightest kid of the bunch huh?

It is right between the written paragraph and the poll. It’s highlighted in green “Edwards TD”.
