#21 vontae davis

ok this guy in my heart i beleve will be a top 3 corner in 2 years.......a couple of months before the draft he could of been a top 10 pick what happened i dont know. all i know is that this guy is the perfect prototype and boy is he explosive.....he has the body of a lb the speed of a wr/rb and hits harder than almost anyone in the nfl...i trully think that with a little more discipline he can be a shut down corner in no time.

everybody's man crush Sean Smith has messed up a lot too.

Vontae will be the better one of the two. He’s just more physically gifted.

Who can really tell who is going where yet. I see them as a good tandem for a long time to come.

however, none of that will matter if we don't get ourselves a Marywether

or Polamalu or a ball hawk like that. It’s unbelievable how the Front Office epically failed bringing in Wilson, a hard hitting safety, to play along with Yeremiah Bell, another hard hitting safety. Both with CERO coverage skills. Specially if they knew they’d be starting at least one rookie cb and after seeing how awful our secondary was last year. EPIC FAIL

We have got two great cover corners, who can help support the run

Now all we need is a play making safety and we’re in business.

what I like is they all have great speed and good cover skills

everything else can be coached. Smith is pure finesse, Vontae is dirty and gritty and a hell of a hard hitter, Clemons is a little of both.

What I like about Clemons is his speed. He can be taught how to tackle, but as long as he gets wherever he needs to be in a flash, he can be really good.

Maybe Madison and Surtain were just a precursor

to the glory that Smith and Davis shall achieve.

Although Madison and Surtain have much cooler names, so it’s not likely.

I Don't think it will take 2 years

I think by next year he and Smith will be top 10 Corners.

by JeTsSuck on Nov 3, 2009 8:32 PM EST reply actions

Him and Smith still need their time we are asking two rookies to cover

WR’s like Coleston,Edwards,Crotchery(hee hee),Evans and Owens,Moss Welker,White,Ward,Holmes etc these guys have a tough group and really have been holding their own it is the TE’s that have really been killing us hopefully wecan put and end to that oh and a couple of lb’s that can drop back into coverage would be nice as well

vontae davis..more physically gifted?

that makes no sense, because hes faster and more explosive doesn’t make him more gifted..

you cant make up for 6’3.5" with the vertical and play-making ability of Sean Smith

They are both gifted in 2 completely different ways and its why they will be a great tandem for along time, with Smith in the boundary and Vontae as primary or “lock down” for #1’s its gonna be a tough team to pass on.. Plus eventually when the FO gets them a FS who can actually make plays? pfff GG NFL

vontae davis..more physically gifted?
that makes no sense, because hes faster and more explosive doesn’t make him more gifted..

you kind of answered the question yourself. But no, it was probably just a coincidence that Vontae was considered a top 10 talent and Smith was picked late in the second round….

by MauMontaV5 on Nov 3, 2009 11:12 PM EST up reply actions

Sean Smith

has that Cromartie type impact, im simply saying that Sean Smith can learn and train to be more explosive and faster, Vontae cannot grow 4 inches

Oh yea clearly what round you were chosen in means what? considering Vontae has been beat out by SS since Day 3 of training camp.

Vontae’s Brother is a perfect example, explosive speed, power and strength isnt everything..

by suspect on Nov 3, 2009 11:20 PM EST reply actions

yeah but when developed properly, you can turn into an elite player

you do realize Vernon Davis right now is the best TE in football right?

We are talking about being physically gifted or not, so yes, what round you are chose means who’s got elite physical ability and who doesn’t

by MauMontaV5 on Nov 3, 2009 11:39 PM EST up reply actions

keep in mind that most CB

dont start their rookie year, and usually takes them 2 years to evolve shut down corners.

by g35phin on Nov 3, 2009 11:45 PM EST reply actions

Vernon Davis?

you do realize Vernon Davis right now is the best TE in football right?

Umm.. What? I really know that you didn’t mean that.
Regardless either way, SS has shown big boy play potential, until Vontae does you cant really make assumptions. Lets make sure this kid has his head on straight and give him a few years before anointing him a future top 3 CB. What are we Jets fans?

by suspect on Nov 3, 2009 11:58 PM EST reply actions

I'm with Mau

Now that Vernon has his head on straight, there hasn’t been any one TE that you can say has played better than him this year. Don’t forget he also has a couple of no talents at QB. Both corners however are going to be beasts in their own rights!!!

by Laces out on Nov 4, 2009 12:10 AM EST up reply actions

thanks haha. Uhm you make a good point there Suspect.

Aside from being impressed with his physical abilities, I’ve been critical of Vontae this season. He got his job taken from a 2nd round rookie and hasn’t really showed much on the field. So you are right “until Vontae shows big play potential, we can’t really make assumptions”. Yes as of now, in my book, Vontae is not worth a 1st round pick more than Kenny Britt or Jeremy Maclin. But I do see him evolving into a great CB. So let’s see what happens.

by MauMontaV5 on Nov 4, 2009 12:29 AM EST up reply actions

big play potential?

like when he studied game film, knew that Buffalo liked to start drives with a little out route, waited until he saw the receiver plant his inside foot hard, and made a pick 6?

You’re right, he hasn’t shown any big play potential yet.

Shockey? He may not have the yards/TDs, but the Saints can count on him for moving the ball into the redzone in uber-clutch situations.

Lol, agreed Mau

But lets stop callin Vernon the best TE in the game, yea hes had 7 TD’s and has been very good since Alex Smith took over, hes still being outgained by 8 other TE’s. Enough with that stuff

by suspect on Nov 4, 2009 6:55 AM EST reply actions

I think Vontae's shown up as someone worthy of a #25 pick

But it’s the little things I am seeing from him. He successfully covered Colston at the goal against NO, made a ST shoestring tackle on a Saints return man who was about to take it to the house, and he showed excellent technique against Braylon Edwards on that fade pattern last weekend.

For a guy who is a rookie, I am not sure if we could really ask for more out of him. He clearly loves this team and wants to improve his game every week. He does something stupid about once a game, but he’s still learning.

I desperately wanted to draft him, and I knew we had a good one when he laid down the wood to Jericho Cotchery.

We need a #1 wideout in Miami... Arrelious Benn in 2010!

As for Sean Smith

He’s had his bumps, too. But let’s also keep in mind that in eight weeks Smith has seen:

-Roddy White
-Reggie Wayne
-Vincent Jackson
-Terrell Owens
-Braylon Edwards
-Numerous Saints receivers

And now he’s going to see Randy Moss this weekend. Seriously, we’re doing this a rookie. I think he’s been impressive and will continue to learn.

Who hasn’t intercept Trent Edwards? I know Stanford is not a football powerhouse but when < harvard theres problems.

Admittedly it is a nice play and im not saying hes not gonna be a nice player, but judging from this moment in time SS has been better. Bottom line
