Can we put the Bess mess to rest?
I think it's safe to say that we can get off of Devone Bess' back for a couple drops and a muffed punt. I realize that the negative reaction towards Bess was probably a carry over of the butterfingers of Teddy Bear but please people, realize what DB brings to the table.
The guy is arguably the second best slot receiver in the NFL, behind our former slot guy....Wes Welker. The guy runs great routes and his quickness really enable him to get open out of the slot position. He catches almost everything (yes I know he had two bad games in his 26 game career, but we should realize that was more of fluke than reality) thrown at him and has a knack to get to an open spot when the QB needs an outlet.
I remember many of the debates that were getting thrown around when we were talking about getting Turner some playing time. Many people were in favor, unjustly so, of sitting Bess while playing Hartline, Camarillo, Ginn (for his return skills) and Turner. Now I ask those same people, where do you stand now? I gave the numbers through 9 games in a few previous posts, Bess is number 2, YES NUMBER 2, in the NFL in converting 3rd downs into 1st downs. I believe he only improved those numbers last night. I hope we can finally lay the "Sit Bess" so Turner can play. Don't get me wrong, I want Turner in the game but lets sit Hartline or Camarillo before we sit our best WR.

Hey, I just wanted him to feel some pressure from a little sitting
Worked for Porter, worked for Ginn. I apologize, but Coaches shouldn’t wait for their players to take matters into their own hands. Hey, it worked, but that’s few and far between. Lucky Bess has such a great work-ethic.

I was never in favor of sitting Bess for Turner...
but I was in favor of having Ginn do punt returns.
However, seeing Bess play that short punt convinced me that he is the man for punt returns.
I fear that Teddy would have let the ball bounce, roll past him, and end up being lousy field position as well as missing a KEY play of the game.
Now if there were some way to have an explosive player near Bess when he catches the punt so that he could hand off or pitch to him to get more out of mr. cement shoes…say someone like Pat White?

Bess is THE worst punt returner in the NFL.. im sorry
Did you watch the play where he called a fair catch when he had 2 count ‘em 2 blockers blocking the only Panther anywhere near him. I was yelling at the tv WTF Bess! No doubt he got chewed out for that and that’s where his aggressiveness came from on returning the short punt.
Not to mention the hiccup he gets everytime he goes to catch the punt. I really dont know if he’s gonna hang onto it or not. So… no he is not a good punt returner. Ginn should be back there

DBess is a top slot WR in the NFL....
and probally the worst punt returner in the NFL.
he can be both….it happens.
He is money on 3rd down..and has the best hands I have seen in a long ass time….but punt returning isnt his strong suit…

Okay I was one of the guys on Bess for a couple of weeks
But I wasnt wrong.. the guy has shown that he does indeed have good hands for the most part. I knew he did from watching him play at Hawaii and last year. This wasnt my gripe with him. I was pissed at how he returns punt. He fair catches faster than Ginn runs out of bounds.
Also I HATE how Bess can NEVER seem to catch the ball on the run. Seriously on that awesome 3rd and long conversion. If Bess stays on his feet he would still be running. Plays like that look cool but jeez man every catch doesnt need to be a diving one. Example Brian Hartine didnt make a diving catch on his post pattern. He caught it and ran for 20 more yards.
I am thinking that our wr’s have a real issue with body control when the ball is in the air. Half the catch is shifting your body into a position to make the catch easier. So I’ll lay of Bess’s hands but not his feet. He still needs alot of work in that department

Bess is gonna make you forget about Welker...
That is a quote from a friend at work whose son was the WR opposite Bess at Hawaii. I realize that he may be a little bias but, if you look at it, Welker became the superstud after he went “there”.
In his two full years in Miami he had 29 and 67 receptions. Only 1 TD and about a 10 yard avg per catch. Bess had 54 last yr and so far this year has 46 catches and only 1 TD (last yr) for about a 9 yd avg. In the last 3 games he’s got 16 catches for 191 yds ( about 12 yards per)
While I haven’t quite forgotten about Wes, I do think Davone is gonna be a terriffic wideout for years to come. I think him and Henne are gonna be a great combo, lets hope they really get it rolling these last 6 weeks.

I love Bess but I don't think he is nearly as good as Welker is.
He will have alot to prove to have me rank him near Welker. He is arguably the second best slot guy, but that is a huge drop off. Did you see what Welker did to the Jets? No one could cover him. I mean think about the security that is to a QB….knowing that if his deep routes isn’t open, he can just go to Welker because you know he is probably open and will definitely catch the ball!
