Porter More Effective with Additional Rest?

Suppose we bench Joey Porter for Buffalo and get him all fired up for Brady and Vollmer and the Pats (and more importantly let him rest his 30something body) ala Pedro Martinez in the MLB playoffs.

Charlie Anderson and Cameron Wake can man the fort while he's gone and get valuable playing experience.

Then bench him for Jacksonville and get him fired up (and well rested) for pursuing Vince Young.

Then bench him for Houston and get him fired up (and more importantly, well-rested) for Big Ben and the shaky Steeler O-Line.

We have enough quality depth at OLB to get the job done, why not be smart when using our personnel?

What do you think?

Why not? Maximize Joey and also give our backups valuable playing time

We need Joey every game. All hands on deck.

joey was a beasty last night

but can he keep it up , the last few games he was in were less than spectacular. I like the rotation idea but let him play every game just not every down. good incentive for him to keep his starting job as he now knows sparano will bench him. anderson , and wake are young and aggressive but lack experience , but even with that they are better than most. the hunger factor plays into that alot

Don't think it was intentional, but the way it worked out: You have Travelle Wharton on short rest/preparation versus

Joey Porter on full rest
Advantage Porter 2 sacks, 8 tackles

Here's an additional idea:

on the off-week (v Buffalo) send him down to Cabo in the company of the biggest and most obnoxious Tom Brady fan.
Force him to have to show the Brady fan a good time AT PORTER’S EXPENSE.
By the time he gets back, he’ll want to take Brady’s head off and rip off his limbs one by one

He's going to have plenty of more rest because of our mini bye

Good Thoughts

I like your line of thinking but I also like what they did last night … Joey did see more time on the bench this past game than he has all season which probably helped keep him fresh throughout the game.

the main thing is that we get “all hands on deck” for this playoff run, I’m sure there are alot of players who could use a week off but we are better served w/ Peazy in the mix, my only suggestion is that if he is sucking pull him quicker and put in Wake or Anderson.

Yes, but why waste a 30something player (and risk tweaking a hammy) in a game v the Bills,

where he may not even be needed.
I would like to see Porter going absolutely ape nuts in the New England game. Fresh from a week’s involuntary vacation and practice inactivity (riding a bike on the side).
People complain about the QBs not getting enough continuous reps to get in a flow, but if the OLB are rushing with limited reps, how does Wake and Anderson improve (and build stamina)?
we actually have enough OLBs that some can actually rest or be held out of games and we still go 2 deep at the position.
Why not use that to our advantage?

Still got to start Peazy .. you can never assume victories

you are right the Bills off as if they are no good and a win already. While I do think we “should” win the game nothing is for certain and that is why you play Joey. The moment you start to look ahead you get in trouble. Good thoughts like I said I just don’t think these games are as easy as you make it so I wouldn’t want to risk it.

We definitely need to sub our OLB's more

JT and Porter are basically worthless out there when tired. The good news is we have 2 maybe 3 more guys we can sub in.
1st down/short yardage
Roth needs to be in on every running down strongside. I’d pair Taylor with him since it seems he is better against the run that Wake or Porter.

2nd down/medium yardage
Taylor and Anderson… Anderson in for a pass rush and JT in for either

3rd down/long
Wake Wake and more Wake…the guy is a flat out beast speed rusher. He needs to be in every passing down. Then I would put whoever is playing the best (or the freshest) out of Porter/Taylor/Anderson

I probably know Judo! How many of you can make the same boast?
