Ginn paves way as Dolphins sweep season series against Jets - Part Deux

I started to post this as a comment in Matty's main thread, and realized that it was getting pretty long.  So, incorporating the main points in Matty's post, I am adding my own 2¢ here about yesterday's game.

To begin with, did this strike a chord with anyone else?

It was the kind of performance to make even the most optimistic Dolphin fan think, "here we go again."

Boy did Matty call this!  This was me yesterday.  After the Bess muff, I started to get worried and on the last Jets drive, I was definitely thinking "here we go again".

Star-divide

Also, I am very happy for Ginn.  As a Fin fan, you gotta be happy when a player steps up, even if he is proving you wrong in the process.  I have not been a big fan of Ginn returning kicks.... mainly because I have never seen the three things out of him that I saw yesterday:

First, he actually hit it up in the hole right away on both returns.  None of that fancy running backwards crap.  Maybe he is starting to understand the speed of the guys he is playing against.  Running backward or laterally across the line doesn't work well in the NFL.
Second, he juked someone!  Yes, those of you who have seen my posts criticizing Ginn on returns will know that this has been my #1 complaint against him... the apparent inability to make some miss.  This is the first time I have really ever seen him dodge guys!
Third, he took some contact without giving up and crumpling to the field in a ball.  Granted, it wasn't a LOT of contact, but part of that was due to him dodging guys so they couldn't get a clean hit.  Because of his history, when he ran into the wedge, I was surprised not to see him go down right way.  But it was on the one return, when the defender grabbed for him along the sideline, and Ginn stumbled for a second, that I found myself VERY surprised that he did not fall down or go out of bounds.

These things are new for Ginn, and show some promise.  i would not even worry about his progress as a WR at this point.  I would try to reinforce what he is doing right in the return game, and build on that.  Remember, Hester is only now starting to show some skill in the passing offense, after being mainly relegated to the return game for the past few years.

----------------------------------------------

Here are a few of my own "quick hits":

- Bess had a bad game, but part of the thing to keep in mind is that Bess has not played well with Henne at QB yet.  The muff was just a stupid mistake and I don't think we will see that again.  But he might have a little trouble adjusting to Henne's throws.

- Our Defensive play calling was the problem in the second half.  Our rotation is solid.  Our guys can make plays.  But this is the 3rd, 4th? (I have lost count now) game this season when the D almost goes into a Prevent when they have the lead.  This is horrible play calling by Paul Pasqualoni.  We run a 3-4, with at least 3 solid pass rushing OLBs.  But when you leave the LBs back in coverage to try and cover the TE, we get burned.  And we have solid DBs, but when you leave the WRs all day to get open, we get burned.  When we consistently bring pressure with our front 3 (which is pretty consistent) and then bring 1 or 2 guys coming from different directions, we almost always create pressure.  i haven't gone back and looked at the game and counted the times we backed off on bringing that extra man or two, but IIRC, in the second half we have done it quite a bit.  I am definitely laying this one on the play calling and not the players.

- I LOVE our DBs!!!  I am still down on Wilson, but he played better in terms of missed tackles, and was AWESOME on those blitzes.  I still think he is a SS trying to play FS, and this is a long term problem.  But he helped yesterday and nothing bad really stuck out.

- Speaking of DBs, I can forgive Davis for going for the pick.  He played will and will learn from this mistakes.  However, did anyone else catch the announcers calling our Sean Smith for giving up a play on Edwards, and notice that it was actually Davis that got beat?  I didn't have this recorded, so I couldn't go back and look, but when they replayed it during the game, it was Davis that was in coverage and Smith coming across the field to help make the tackle.  I am not sure if it is the same play Matty is talking about in his post as a the "Sean Smith rookie mistake".

- I can't say I am surprised by the lack of drop off at MLB with Crowder out.  I was pleased to see Torbor step up, but Crowder has always been merely good... not Pro Bowl caliber.  So Torbor really didn't have big shoes to fill.  It is good to know that we have depth at the position though.  Maybe next year we draft that Pro Bowl caliber MLB.

- I was actually glad to see the Dolphins not have to rely on the Wildcat, but it certainly wasn't because they were moving the ball well out of their base Offense.  The whole Offense seemed to lack commitment this game... no WC, no pounding running game, now deep passing threat.  Ricky Williams was really the biggest bright spot.  It just felt like they were afraid to try and grind it out with the WC after the Jets had most certainly spent a lot of time preparing for it.  Which makes sense.  But wouldn't you have expected a heavy dose of TE/RB screens?  Or pounding the ball inside?  Or something consistent?  I mean, with all the 3 and outs, if you are at least pounding the ball, eventually you will have some success.

- We are talking about mistakes made this game, in regard to our Davis and Smith, Henne, and Bess, but in this case, chalk them all up to a good thing.  If all of these guys can make those mistakes in a hostile game setting, and the Miami Dolphins can still come away with the win, then we can consider them valuable learning experiences and hope that the entire team gets better because of the mistakes.  The one area I am concerned about is the play calling.  If you win, do the coordinators learn from it?  Or do they view it as good enough to do the same thing next time?

Here are some interesting facts:

- The Dolphins went 4-14 on 3rd down conversions.

- The Dolphins lost the TOP battle by almost NINE MINUTES.

- The Dolphins GAINED a net total of 104 TOTAL YDS ON OFFENSE

- They LOST 60 YDS ON OFFENSE due to sacks.

- Chad Henne averaged 1.9 yds per pass

- Ricky Williams alone produced 68 yds of the total offense.

- While the run D was solid overall, Thomas Jones ran for 102 yd (almost as much as the total Dolphins Offense), AND averaged 3.78 yds per carry.  Those are not bad number for Jones.  What this means regarding the Fins run D is that they made the Jets grind it out and did not give up big plays on the ground.  Not bad.

- Did anyone here foresee saying, reading, or hearing the statement "Special Teams won us this game." this year?  I know I sure didn't.

i was posting roster updates. one of them was front paged, about Roth.

i also posted about Nalbone, and was trying to post about Crowder’s downgraded injury status. they were reasonable posts. It wasn’t Matty, and it wasn’t just this blog. it was some dumb automatic posting limit that i exceeded, and it banned me from ALL SBNation. I couldn’t even post on Gangrene after our win.

I take it his lost yards due to sacks are being factored in here?

Because he had an average of 5.3 yards per attempt last night and almost 10 yards per completion.

I saw the part of the game where Smith was blamed for Davis' coverage error

Then again, Phil Simms called NYJ’s defense “too unbeatable,” so let’s remember what we’re dealing with here.

Smith rules. I can’t wait to see how he looks in his second year!

yep, i hear u

i just think that smith is playing a bit better than Davis, which is AWESOME for his size. But Davis is playing very well in his own right, and I am looking at these guys as the long term answer to our pass D woes. Throw in Nate Jones (yeah right, i’m like “who?”) and we have a solid set of CBs. If we can find that ball hawk FS, we are set for a long time to come.

Restrict what incoming rookies can make as unproven players but have a way that a team can hold on to there own players reguardless of the salry cap.

I'm not saying the offense wasn't bad, but...

The -60 yards from sacks is already included in the 104 total yards. Also, the 2 return TDs and the defensive TD reduced the number of plays the offense could run.

Left .... banned?

Ok, then we can really say that nobody is safe here!! :-)

Left, I was shocked at those returns because Ginn actually made a few guys miss. Making guys miss is a great recipe for YAC on receptions and we all know how bad GInn has been in that metric. On these returns if nothing else, he did juke and deke a couple of defenders which shows he can do it at times.

For as much smack as the jets have talked – and it would take hours to go through it all – they really did outplay us left and right this past weekend. I mean we had what, like $1.05 in total offense?

If I had said to anyone in this forum that we’d have < 125 yards total Off. and then claimed we’d still win – people would have fallen out of their chairs, laughing so hard, that they might have hurt themselves…..

As awful as we performed, with our OL allowing Henne to be a tackling dummy for the jet’s D, while our own D let Thomas Jones pile up the rushing yards against us – we somehow won and that does feel right after we choked in last week’s game. Besides, isn’t it mandatory that you must win any game in which Gibril Wilson misses < 3 tackles & Ginn makes a play?

Now if the football gods really wanted to provide us with justice then we’d need more wins like this one to make up for blowing the colts game too

I think those guys missed because he had time to see them well before they got to him...

when he is catching a reception, there isn’t time to gauge the field before you get hit… this is also why he can catch a kickoff with confidence but was fumbling punts last season.

i don't buy that.

i’m not expecting him to dodge a DB that is coming at him while he is focused on a catch. i am talking about all of the times he has either been in a KR/PR situation and run right into guys and gone down immediately. If you don’t see something different in what he did this past game, then you and i have been watching different players.

your right left (he-he) what the hell is the matter with the defensive coaches , prevent, please. didnt they learn anything from the saints game, jeeze. Big props to ginn for stepping up, hope he keeps it up , and it was a gutsy thing to bench him, wish they d do it more to others , maybe it will give them incentive to preform.I heard mark duper offered to give his time for free to help him overcome his fear of the hit, and work on his hands skills but ginn has nt returned the e-mail. Who would refuse super duper , damn! If nothing else sparano should have him come to practice to pep talk them all.next week is the dreaded patriots, hopefully the defense and offense will remember, it s 4 quarters, balls out , we have to win all our divisional games to even have a whiff of a playoff chance

oddly enough lefty i'm maybe

even more down on ginn after this game then before… if you watch the 1st? return – it looks like he kind of loafs going up the sideline and then notices that (feely??? has the angle on him) when he kicks it up a notch and gains position…. the fool shouldn’t slow down until he’s past the coverage…

then in the freakin post game interview – the guy looks like my 3 year old doing the potty dance… heck she has more focus… t ginn you are on freakin national tv and you’re looking all over the place… you can’t look at the camera and talk…
but if this is any indication of his actual real life focus, it’s no wonder the guy can’t put it together….

sadly i think the guy does need to play more of a role in the offense… they NEED someone to extend the defenses and without him in there the coverage just creeps up…

i’m sick and tired about hearing the freaking yardage stat… the fins offense gave up 3 possesions on those returns…so the time of possession stats and the yardage are heavily skewed as a result…

But this is the 3rd, 4th? (I have lost count now) game this season when the D almost goes into a Prevent when they have the lead.

not sure this is entirely the problem lefty… heck against the colts they foolishly went all out against them and manning burned them in the end – and against the saints – NO went to 2 TE’s and max protection in the 2nd and the phins threw 5 and 6 at it… with no effect other then to leave the corners on single and bell on single once shockey released… had they dropped off into protection and maybe blitzed from the corners/safety …..

Agreed – Bess is a mess this year – his fumbling has to stop and honestly, i think he’s cost the team more wins then Ginn but has gotten a pass so far.

finally – Peezy is just terrible right now… don’t know if it’s still the injury or if he’s lost it… but i’d rather see Roth/Wake on the SS and move JT back to his old job (rumor had it he’s pretty good over there) and let peezy spell him…

The Future is now, stop the bandwagon and lets get the Henne train rollin, as we all hope that the 14th dwarf is the real prince charming.

Sure the total offense stat has been mentioned often...

I know I did. As you say we did forego three offensive possessions due to the ST/defensive returns for TD’s we got.

My problem is that there was absolutely no indication all day when we did have the ball on offense – that we could do anything with it.

Look at our drive summaries:

Miami Drive Summaries
START QTR POSS. YARD PLAYS YARDS RESULT
12:50 1 01:49 MIA 20 3 3 Punt
08:19 1 01:21 MIA 10 3 2 Punt
02:45 1 01:07 MIA 13 3 1 Punt
12:20 2 03:01 MIA 25 6 24 Punt
07:04 2 01:29 MIA 45 3 2 Punt
04:09 2 02:14 NYJ 45 5 15 Field Goal
01:09 2 01:09 MIA 16 8 26 End of Half
15:00 3 01:15 MIA 21 3 -4 Punt
01:35 3 07:47 MIA 33 13 67 Touchdown
05:52 4 02:01 MIA 26 3 -12 Punt
01:06 4 01:06 MIA 15 3 -5 End of Game

Seven 3 & out drives…

Factor in 6 sacks and if we’d had the ball more you can bet we’d have given up even more sacks.

Also a meager 2.3 ypc average on rushing.

So yeah we might have added some yardage had we not had the 3 TD returns. But IMO, we would most definitely have not scored 21 points with an extra 3 possessions on 0. It was a pretty piss poor day on offense I think.

About Ginn – he does need to be out there, if nothing else, running 40 yard wind sprints all day. he does not inspire confidence in the least.

JP – the best i can say about him is, well, um, his pre-game instigating skills are still OK.

not i'm not going to disagree

yeah – the offense was poor and i agree it was very unlikely that they would match the 3 td’s they did get… what i was ranting about – was this idea that the jets out gained the fins 4-1… and they held the ball for 7 extra minutes …. yada yada yada .. that eveyone from rex on down complained about…

but if you take the say 3 of the last 4 drives by the fins that didn’t end the half’s…. and ToP is increased by 4.5 minutes and the fins have 200 yards of offense… and that is before you take away the extra Top and yardage the Jets get for the 3 extra drives and you have an even ToP and the jets likely have 100 fewer yards … and you are much closer to the 17-14 no offense slug fest that the experts predicted this game to be….

The Future is now, stop the bandwagon and lets get the Henne train rollin, as we all hope that the 14th dwarf is the real prince charming.

Dude...that's a lot of speculation

We were just flat out lucky……perform terribly and got the win. I am not complaining and it might have been poetic justice for the Colts and Saints games.

True! We had no right winning that game. Maybe its Karma seeing as the Jets are

such a bunch of douches.
