Q&A with the Panthers Blogger
Hello Dolphin fans and fans of The Phinsider. Jaxon here with Cat Scratch Reader. You may remember we talked over the preseason down at your place. Our season match-up is upon us and given the short week I decided to do the Fanpost versus the five questions with Matty.
So do you have any questions? I will try to check this thread up until game time and give you the juicy red meat you so crave.
You guys beat us pretty handily in the preseason but our coach has already said we showed the Dolphins nothing on both sides fo the ball. So that's out excuse and we are sticking to it.
Both teams have suffered their share of injuries. In the last two weeks we've lost our leading tackler in LB Thomas Davis and Pro Bowl LT Jordan Gross for the season. Joey Porter should have a whale of a game as a result.
We've had a lot of discussion on our site as whether we miss Dan Henning or not. We haven't been happy with the play calling and wonder if we should have kept the guy. Also, we are trying to take credit for the Wildcat as we ran it about 30 times in a game back in 2006.
If someone here would be so kind as to put a similar fanpost on my site it would be appreciated.
Good luck to all. Go Panthers!

Delhomme
Jason, I noticed that Jake has been having a terrible year(yes he’s on my fantasy team), but things have turned around a little bit over the past 3 weeks. Could you give us more details on what has changed? Improved running game, less ints…? Thanks for coming over from the dark side.

The biggest impact has been...
the offensive gameplan. The Panthers are (1) asking Jake to throw less and (2) throwing more high percentage passes versus ‘chucking up’ the deep ball. Other than that he is just making better throws.
My advice is simple and expected to the Dolphins D, get some pressure on Jake and he is more likely to throw INT’s or muff it up in some way.

I got a couple of questions for you.
How is Double Trouble holding up? I know they both had some injuries at the beginning of the season and I saw something that Stewart didn’t practice yesterday.
Also, how does your pass rush protection look after losing your Gross? Joey Porter hasn’t really done much this year, but Jason Taylor is starting to look like his old self and Cameron Wake has been a beast when he’s been on the field.

Both Williams and Stewart have been nicked up this season, Stewart from the preseason and Williams just recently. Yet so far both have gotten their carries on Sunday and looked effective for the most part. They just combined for 200 yards I believe last week while both sport injuries.
Pass protection suddenly looks shaking. The word is the line-up remain as it was when Gross when down, LG Travelle Wharton kciks out to LT and back-up 2nd year C/G Mackenzy Bernadeau will start at LG. Wharton has 33 career starts at LT but we moved him inside for a reason. He had be had with the speed rush to the edge. I still need to see more of Bernadeau in game action but can’t imagine he will make up for the bigger Wharton. No worries though, we prefer to run to the right side!

so do you think carolina made the line weaker in 2 positions than just 1
the reason i ask this is the best part of our defense is our d-line. Should we expect less ypc because of the Gross injury

Stadium question
Never been to Bank America Stadium, but goinig to the game. Got any advice about Charlotte or suggestions about the stadium, parking, fans, etc.?

I’ve never lived in Charlotte.
Can any Panther fans help with this? Southtunnell?

What I do is take the lightrail in
If you take S. Blvd going south there are numerous park-n-rides at about every 3rd intersection. You can park for free and ride the rail in for about $2. And there are some restaurants/bars along it that you can stop at on the way.
If you want to park in walking distance, go down Morehead, behind the stadium(away from town). That is where most of the tailgating takes place. If you do that, stop by the Doghouse on the corner of Mint and Morehead. A local sports radio station broadcasts live from there, with all kinds of drinks and stuff to do.

Also, Charlotte is mostly people who have relocated from other places. So you’ll probably see a bunch of Miami jerseys. However, if you lose, be prepared to get heckled out of the stadium.

do you think if we get at Jake early, and rough him up a bit, he'll be hearing footsteps all game long
and force his throws? or is he a tough guy that can hang in the pocket and is willing to take his licks until he finds an open receiver?
by chrislucas on Nov 18, 2009 3:12 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
yes
he can be rattled. If the Panthers keep it close in the 4th quarter I would rather have the ball and the game in the hands of Jake and the offense than in the hands of our defense.

i guess but we're 4th in rush defense for a reason.
I also think that our rookie corners and you QB factors in a lot too. With your starting LB out how do you feel about your defense in general and particularly your run defense

Carolina is 3rd in rush offense
And the reason Arizona is not still 1st in rush defense is because we ran for 270 yards on them. Fox could care less how where your defense is positioned, he will still try to run over you.
Carolina’s run defense sucks with Thomas Davis out, so you should have success there. However their pass defense is 4th in the league. Secondary rookies are playing well, safety Sherrod Martin has 4 INTs in 3 games. They are tight in coverage, fast, swarm to the ball, and when your QB makes a mistake they are usually in position to take advantage of it. Also, the last 3 QBs we faced, Breez, Ryan and Warner all looked uncomfortable due to a pretty consistent pass rush. All threw INTS, Warner threw 5. You are better off running the ball.

Arizona was only ever first
because why would you bust off a 0-4 yard run when you can easily light them up with 10-yard passes. AKA they only had a good Run-D cause no one wasted their time running with such a bad pass D.

You are probably right
But my point was that their position didn’t stop Fox from running over 40 times. The way they interchange these guys and keep hammering fresh legs at you, if you don’t have a lead going into the 4th, I’m sure your run defense will start to wear down.
However take a nice lead, and then you get your shot at Shaky Jake… Just remember the most explosive receiver in the league is the other side of that scenario.

one of the fastest in the nfl
great pass rush, excellent secondary. bellow average on run defense, but there have been occasions when we have swarmed to the ball and limited a strong running game.

have you seen a negative impact in your secondary since losing Ken Lucas?
Also I thought Gamble would be a perennial pro bowler coming into the league… whats up with him?
