2009 Perspective VIII
There have been three drafts of this week's perspective, and none of them are this post. Matty killed the first two with his first half review and second half expectations posts (they were much better coming from Matty than me, trust me on that one), and the third version, I just did not like. So, here is version four for this week.
Something has been bothering me lately, and I am going to get up on my soapbox and preach tonight.
We are fans of the Miami Dolphins, are we not? Fans of a team that, at least most of us feel, is the best team in the league. A team that, although we have been having a rough go of it in the past few years, we all are excited to see starting to turn the corner and march back towards greatness.
So, what's with all the negativity?
Look, we all get it. There are problems with the team that need to get fixed. There are positions that the franchise needs to upgrade. There are things that the Dolphins do not do well. The team gets away from its bread and butter running attack too easily sometimes.
We all get it.
So, leave it alone!
I understand Ted Ginn, Jr. was drafted number 9 overall. I get it that he drops balls that he should probably catch. I agree, he is usually looking for a way to get away from the hit rather than fighting through it. No one on this site is arguing with you. Now, we all understand the situation and we all see it. So, DROP IT!
I know I'm not the only one who is sick and tired of the Ted Ginn, Jr. bashing going on every single week. Unless the guy is returning two kicks for touchdowns, you would think the guy just killed the puppy of every commentor in the live game thread.
Cam Cameron picked the Ginn family at number 9. Ted Ginn, Jr. did not force us into picking him. Ted Ginn, Jr. did nothing other than retun kicks at Ohio State and wait for someone to say his name. Guess what? WE did. That's right. The Miami Dolphins, the team you claim to love, picked him. So, guess what? Now, it's up to us to support the guy. Why? John Beck. John Beck got picked by this team to be our franchise quarterback. Instead, when he started having troubles on a team that went 1&15, the fan base suddenly turned on the guy, detroyed any chance of him gaining confidence, and destroyed him. Now, we are doing the exact same thing to Ted Ginn, Jr.
Congratulations, you recognize that Ginn is not a #1 wide receiver in the NFL. But, at least until the end of this year, he's our wide recevier. If you can't support the guy, good for you. But shut up with destroying him everytime he drops a pass. Until you give Brian Hartline, or Davone Bess (who seems to be dropping just as many passes lately), the same sort of criticsm, leave Teddy alone.
The next thing that drives me crazy is how negative we get in the game threads. Even if the team is winning, if any small thing goes wrong, the mood of the game thread suddenly changes. It's gotten so bad lately that I have left during games, and seriously consider each week if I want to come back or not. I don't understand the desire to see the Dolphins fail. If you are a fan, root for the team.
It really was not that long ago that we had to root for a team that was losing every single week. The lone highlight was an overtime touchdown, keeping us from being the Detroit Lions before the Detroit Lions. During that season, each and every week, I was rooting my heart out.
Now, after an 11&5 season, if we throw an interception, you would think we have just blown the Super Bowl. Why? Why are we as fans so fairweather that we can't even root for our team throughout a single game?
Another thing that's driving me nuts is the emergance of the fans who want us to tank the rest of the season. Why on Earth would you ever root for your team to lose? I can't do it. I know most of you can't do it. But, suddenly there are calls for us to lose out, so we can get a better draft pick. That makes no sense to me. I can't stand when this team loses. Why would I want to suffer through 8 more losses, just so we can call a name of an unproven player earlier on an April Thursday night?
I do not mean to say we cannot criticize. I do not mean to say we cannot question coach decisions or complain that a player should have made a play. But, there's a fine line between being upset about a play or player and abusing a player just because we can.
Well, hopefully I did not upset too many of you. I'm just frustrated by what's going on lately, and I felt I needed to vent (I doubt this will make the 50 rec's that last week's Perspective made - thank you to all of you who helped me smash all known rec records!)
Thank you to all of you for your Veteran's Day wishes.

Mosul, i disagree completely about ted ginn.
How can you say we should give Bess or Hartline the same amount of flack for dropped passes??
Bess was clutch all year in 2008, and he has even had quite a few good catches, with an almost 70% catch rate on 3rd downs in 2009. Even putting him in the same breath as Ginn is just wrong. Bess will have to muff up almost everygame for the rest of the season for me to even considering lumping him on the sh*t pile with ginn.
Then you have Hartline, who is a rookie, but has already showm more toughness and better hands than Ginn and his whole family. And even though he’s had a few drops, he is a ROOKIE. he is afforded rookie mistakes, Ginn’s days of rookie mistakes are dead and gone. Brian hartline, at this point, is even a better reciever, did you see him go across the middle last week, take the hit and hold onto the ball?? Hartline will be better than ginn in the future as well.
Keep ginn on returns, and returns only.

gotta hav ginn on the field
he attracts attention deep, which frees up some space for our other receivers
none of our other receivers do that
but dont throw it to him, he will drop it, lol
That was true of Devin Hester and he's getting better.
It was true of Willie Gault, and he did well. He may not catch everything thrown his way, but he’s keeping defenses honest and safeties back.

I have stated this in a few other posts but I will rehash this here
Ted Ginn brings things to the table that our other receivers don’t.
The first thing is speed. Sure Bess is quick, just as Wes Welker was quick, but he lacks the speed to beat people. That being said it is the Dolphins coaching staff’s responsibility to find a way to utilize his strength. It is no different than a Defensive Coordinator learning to use JT or Dwight Freeney (Both top notch speed rushers) in a manner that helped his defense and allowed them to succeed. Would either of them succeed if they were expected to be utilized the same manner that Reggie White (a great bull rusher)? No, the DC allows them to play a game where they excelled. The same thing needs to happen with Ted Ginn.
We all know he struggles to catch anything up high and over the middle. I can’t say that I blame him. He isn’t exactly built like Brandon Marshall, TO, or Anquan Boldin and I don’t think you can expect him to play like them in that role. Would Warrick Dunn been able to be a battering ram that Mike Alstot was? I mean they were both running backs right? Shouldn’t they be able to do the same things? Of course not. They were made differently and should be utilized to their strengths. I don’t think Mike would have been successful many times running the sweep.
So where does that leave us with Ted Ginn? Find his strengths, and from what I have seen its the deep outs. He can give the appearance that he is going deep (yes, the OC is going to have to take a shot deep at least once or twice a game in order for this to work) and get the DB to turn his hips. Ginn will have to continue to improve on his cuts so that he can break the drive off and cut the sideline. This also forces the safety to think about his other responsibility (covering deep) instead of only playing the R&R express. We need to utilize Ginn in a manner that plays to his strengths AND helps the team in other areas. Over the middle is not that area unless you are talking a deep post where he can get seperation.

I understand your comparisons of players to other players of the same position.
but if you are using ginns height/weight as an excuse for his poor play, why dont you look at other recievers with similar height or weight? how about desean jackson from philly?? he is 1inch shorter, and 5lbs lighter than ginn. So why is it that he can catch over the middle, take hits, and even lower his shoulder once in a while?? How about steve smith (car) how big is he? he’s not the lanky type like ginn, but non the less, he is not a big guy and is UBER TOUGH.

Hasn't Bess muffed punts in consecutive weeks now?
So he might well be on the way to that everygame mark you mentioned. He is still a better receiver, but they definitely need to take him off punt returns.

i understand where your coming from.
but for such an objective writer as yourself, you have to admit he has some glaring shortcommings. And at some point it will be ok to just hope he gets traded or cut at the end of the year.
But i still stand by my orgional post up there, that bess and hartline are worlds ahead of ginn, and do not belong in the doghouse, not even in the same backyard.

whatever else
the truly important view from mosul is that fan-based hate and bashing of ginn arguably (and i would agree) affects the young man’s performance, and thus the team — and that once people get on a hate bandwagon that they can ascribe reasons and justifications for, in their sometimes over-heated little noggins, it may collectively ‘work’ to block ginn from doing what he does well, and also from developing into a great no. 2, which seems highly possible.
we hate ginn from the start for not being brady quinn or from notre dame, we now love highly manipulative you tube videos of ginn pass misses (including solemn background audio of course from the most hated cam draft day remarks — one could construct a pro-ginn video just as propagandistically) and yet even after he returns two punts for an nfl record, the volume against him turns up. is that fair? is that being pro-Dolphins?
i think it is a good question. thanks mosul.
Tanking the Season
Is the dumbest idea ever. I’m all for rebuilding via the draft and know that it’s the only way to build a long term contender, but the fact remains that the draft is a big guess. The beauty of the draft is that not every pick works out and there are gems to find in the later rounds. I’d rather be picking later in the round when a top-10 talent falls due to some off-filed issues. Think Baltimore is laughing at the other 3 teams that took a tackle in the 1st round ahead of them? Are we as Dolphin fans not loving Vontae Davis?

It all comes down to hitting
If Ginn would just hit instead of be hit he would get confidence. With aggression comes confidence. With confidence he would actually be great. It’s a players mentality. Play the game or let the game play you.
Guys!
Cam drafted Ginn 4 his KR/PR specialty, not for been a WR
Gave it up on that!
Dont get mad at the delivery, get mad at the SENDER ; )
I will see the Dolphins win a SUPER BOWL before i die(22 years and counting)
sorry Mosul
I guess everyone read your story then decided to be stupid and do the exact opposite of what you ask and keep talking about how bad Ginn is and all that other dumb stuff that just keeps getting repeated and beatin down to death. Support the team and all their players don’t wish for someone to get cut or traded just because he hasn’t played so well, he may still be a better fit than many other options out there, GO GINN and PHINS

2nd reverses and screens.KR/PR ya know thats it. I’m done talking about ginn.Far as other teams they know to stop the run first.8 in the box, so they are forcing miami to pass, thats how u open up the run game.till we prove that we can beat teams in the air.expect 7-8 in the box.Are pass rush is fine, they just need to get off the line faster so i don’t see the pass rush as a major problem.we are a few guys away from winning the big one,as i see it DE NT WR FS ILB OT LB WR thats how the draft will go and 2 pick ups from the FA.Are job should be done once they start to gel we will make it to the big one and hopefully win.
Miamis Draft picks in 2010 picks #1-4 6th 6th 7th
Hey Patrick Crayton was a 7th round pick and he is fine Ireland and Parcells know how to pick’em, i’m fine with our progress, hey just 2 seasons ago, we were in the shit hole.and we pretty much loss games by 6 points or less and poor coaching, but enough about the past,i’m talking about this season we are doing good compared to where we came from 2 seasons ago.
Definitely agree.
This is all of, what, two comments I’ve made on this site, but I gotta’ say you’re spot on. Some of the junk I read makes me wonder if half the people who claim to be fans of the Dolphins are really just fans of winning. Winning kicks ass, but I haven’t even been alive long enough to see the team in a Super Bowl. Doesn’t stop me from rooting for them every chance I get.
Exactly right!
Ya gotta support the team, and that means the WHOLE team. Yea, some players letting us down (Ginn, Porter) and commenting on that is not an issue, but the constant bashing of Ginn- I dont get it. ok he’s not a very good receiver- we all know that already! The constant bashing doesnt help anything!
rec'd....Exactly I made a comment about this a couple months ago
Needless to say I couldn’t articulate what you said the way you did. Well thank you for saying what a lot of us were thinking. When we had that one win season I was in the Marine Corps in California watching the game through the little highlight bar scoreboard. I felt like we won the Super Bowl, I was so happy we won. Then the next season we are in the playoffs and I was wetting myself I was so excited. Moreover, this season so what if Ginn sux I don’t like him either but there is no reason to want this kids heads on a platter. He is a Dolphin and will always be a Dolphin because he will be in the record books for what he did so everyone get over it. Support him in public hate him in private. We don’t need other people looking at our dirty laundry, lets support our team.
Tank the season? Some actually want to do that??
wow.. I agree…there is NO WAY this fan could ever root for “a loss” or many of them…simply for higher draft picks..

Thanks for bringing up the financial impact of high draft picks
MOst fans don’t realize the difference in pay for a top 10 pick and a guy that’s picked number 24 or 25. I would be interested to see the statistical analysis on the success rate but it seems to me that bottom half of the first round sees more success than the top half. It might have something to do with going to a team with more talent, I don’t know. I definitely don’t want to have to pay for a top 10 pick again.

I totally agree
I been noticing the same trend. When did it become fashionable to crap all over your own team? All these paper bags that you see around the league, and even an organized protest in Cleavland? WTF? If you’re so angry and embarrassed, why are you even a fan then? Guess what… the Miami Dolphins have the rest of the league’s players and fans to crap all over them all day, do you think they need us doing that too?
Being constructively critical is one thing, there is merit in that. I understand a lot of money is paid to see the games and buy the swag, etc..etc… so discussing what’s right and wrong with your team is all well and good. But I still cannot comprehend trashing your own team, especially in the presence of fans of opposing teams. Football is a tough business, there will always be ups and downs, if you can’t take the downs there’s no point in being a fan.
It’s easy for all of us to play armchair QB and criticize jobs that none of us are qualified to do, but at the end of the day, it’s a personal decision to be a fan of a team and support them, or you can just decide to be fair-weather only so that you can take the easy way out and bash them when things are not going our way. The latter is fine too… but just realize that by definition, that would no longer fall into the category of a fan, you’re just a spectator….buy yourself a red/white/blue jacket with a big NFL logo on it and move on.
As far as Ted Ginn is concerned, the guy didn’t choose where he was picked. The Dolphins picked him. He should’ve been a late second early third round pick at best. Don’t blame the draft status on him. The guy was set up to fail. He of course needs to be accountable for his actions when he doesn’t perform, and I think for the most part he has been, but it seems like people just want to blame everything on him. Yea, he could’ve won a game or two if he didn’t drop a ball…. but why did the rest of the team during the rest of the game not perform well enough to where it was that close in the first place? It’s a team sport guys. People have to stop this head hunting to just look for someone to be mad at. We live in the glory as a team and we go down with the ship too, that’s what makes victory so sweet in the end. Welcome to the life of a sports fan.

Funny thing is, I've actually noticed the opposite around here.
The illusions of grandure are a bit over the top at times. I’m all for supporting the team, no matter how they play. But I’ll take my devotion with a bit of reality as well. Do I think we’re going to make the playoffs this year, probably not. Am I being negative? No. I’m just being realistic that the chances of us winning 7 of our next 8 games (cause it’ going to take at least 10 wins for post season play) is highly unlikely with a suspect defense and one dimensional offense. Will I still root for them to win every single game? You’re damn right I will, and I’ll expect them to win every time. Not because I have illusions of grandure that we’re winning the Super Bowl this year. But because this team has demonstrated they can compete with any team in the league.
I've never thought we were SB\uper Bowl bound
Before the season I said that I wasn’t even sure we would make the playoffs.
I’ve tried to be very realiztic about this season. The issue is that in game threads, the negativity of some comes on so thick that we all just want to leave.
Some criticsm is fine. Being negative about everything just because you can be, though, is just plain annoying and pointless.

I’ve only stuck around for one game thread. It’s kind of hard cause I’m usually watching the game on the internet. But I didn’t imply you were the one who said we were going to the SB, but there are plenty of people on here who have made that claim.
