Pat Tillman.....in honor of Veterans Day
I would personally like to take a moment and reflect on my personal hero in sports.....Pat Tillman
How many of us out there would have left the life he was living, making the money he was making, to go and live a life that most American's can't fathom. Imagine your worst camping trip conditions and add people trying to kill you at every turn and that's the life Pat and his brother Kevin chose. (Kevin was a minor league baseball player at the time he chose to leave sports for the Army) The guy felt that his country had provided him with the opportunity to do so much that it was his responsibility to give something back. He was afforded the opportunity to leave the Army early and return to pro-football (there were reports that the Patriots coach was in contact with Pat about returning to play for him as well as couple other teams that were interested ) but instead chose to HONOR the contract he signed. He felt that if the other military members were expected to honor their contracts, why should he be held to a different standard. He did all of this without doing a single press conference or doing on the record interviews with media members. There were a few media members that stated they had an occassion returned phone call from Pat when they left messages, but if they asked anything about his Army enlistment he said that he didn't want to talk about it and move on to the sports or family questions.
On the day Pat was killed, his platoon was transporting a broken down Hum Vee from a small town in the Afghanistan mountains. To get it back to their base they were forced to take the vehicle through a very narrow canyon. The dangers of doing this was enough that the platoon commander decided to divide the platoon in two and rally at an appointed place past the canyon. Kevin was in the element that was with the vehicle while Pat was with the element that took a different route. Pat's half of the platoon arrived at the location and was waiting when they heard gun fire back towards the canyon. When Pat heard the gun fire, he took off running back to the canyon in order to help his platoon. The reports are that Pat was running like a man possessed and actually requested permission (which was denied) to remove all his body armor in order to run faster. He covered the distance, an estimated distance of about 350 meters through rocky terrain, at least 20 seconds faster than any of the other platoon member. Pat, another member of his platoon, and an Afghani national that was assisting the platoon were the first 3 to arrive. They came under fire from friendly positions immediately. Pat did everything he was supposed to do to show he was friendly, from popping smoke, to signals, to yelling out his identy. Unfortunately Pat took three rounds to the head and our country lost a true hero. There is a lot of speculation on how things went down in those few moments but I won't touch on those. How ever it happened, it was a great tragedy and one that touched me deeply.
I had the honor of meeting Pat on two different occassions and I can tell you that there was not a more humble athlete or man that I have ever met. He was a favorite of mine before meeting him because of the story of his NFL journey and the way that he played the game. It was the offseason and I was at the airport, wearing a Pat Tillman jersey oddly enough when I noticed a guy looking at me. He smiled and walked over to me, asked my name and where I was going. Now remember, he is the famous one, but he approached me. He talked sincerely and with great interest with me for about 20 minutes before he had to board to catch his flight. Most of his questions were about me, my military background and fairly meaningless things. He rarely blinked and never took his focus off of me. The second occassion wasn't as personal as it was at a Cardinals preseason game. Oddly enough Pat actually remembered meeting me as well as my name and the name of my wife (he actually asked about her even though he hadn't actually met her). That touched me profoundly as I was just some Marine that a pro football star talked to in an airport. He had the most intense eyes I have ever seen and I felt like he was trying to take in every detail of the conversatioin. Those two occassions catapolted him into my favorite athlete not named Dan Marino. When Pat enlisted and chose to become an Army Ranger, he took the lone position as my athletic hero.
Pat played the game of football with reckless abandon and great passion. He wasn't supposed to be big enough or fast enough to play in the NFL but all he did was set a Cardinal record for tackles that still stands. He played Linebacker in college where he was the Pac-10 defensive player of the year his senior year. He converted to safety when he signed with the Cardinals. Paul Zimmerman, aka Dr. Z, named Pat to his 2000 All-Pro Team. He was married and his wife was pregnant when his life came to an early and tragic end. His Army uniform sits on display in Canton Ohio at the pro football Hall of Fame and I make sure to spend some time there every time that I make it to Canton (usually every other year). He was a person that made you want to be a better human being just by meeting him and I don't normally say that about athletes or famous people, but with Pat it was the truth.
I am not a man of many tears and don't cry often. I don't say this as a way of trying to be macho, it's just who I am. The day Pat Tillman's death was announced I broke down in tears. My hero was gone and I think it will be a long time before anyone takes over the top spot in my athlete department. Each year on April 22nd, I spend silent time remembering my hero and I can say without shame, I cry every year. Jim Rome, the prominant radio and TV personality was asked to speak at Pat's funeral. Now I love Rome and have been a fan of his show for YEARS!! As he closed his moving remarks made a statement that personifies how I felt about Pat Tillman. Rome says and I am summarizing..."I have a young son named Jake (I think he was 2 or 3 years old at the time) and I haven't ever talked with him about any professional athletes. But when I do, rest assured that the first one that I will talk to him about will be Pat Tillman".
RIP Pat......you are loved and missed. Happy Veterans day!
P.S. Sorry I didn't get this post out yesterday, but being stationed near DC, I battled the wind and rain and spent the day downtown at all the memorials and at the Arlington National Cemetary. For those that have never been to see the monuments, take the time, plan a vacation and go see the things that made this nation great. And if you get in contact with me early enough, I might be able to be your tour guide.

very awesome personal story too. i’ve never heard a bad thing about Pat, but it’s nice to hear first hand stories of a celebrity who wasn’t pompous and was the exact opposite.

GREAT GREAT STORY bro
awesome stuff…rec’d
i go to ASU, the school Pat went to, which is also about 15-20 min from where he played in the NFL with the AZ Cardinals…and he is everywhere around here…Sun Devil Stadium has his name and number EVERYWHERE, there is a Pat’s Run every year, UofPHX stadium has a statue of him, ASU retired his number (not sure if the Cardinals, but i think they did), everywhere you go you are reminded of Pat Tillman, and 3 out of 10 people (i would say) wear his number everywhere…and i have become pretty familiar with his story by now, I knew of him before i came here, but being here made me realize how remarkable this guy actually was, and I wish i could have met him…he was truly a great great guy
thanks for sharing this story…oh and i think you are excused for posting this a day late

Pat Tillman was a great man
He could have stayed in Ari and made millions and played football for god-knows how many more years, but he gave it up to serve his country. He is the epitomy of sacrifice and is a true hero. Rome’s pretty cool too.

Another thing about him
He had a contract offer to go elsewhere…I think that the offer was a 3 or 4 year deal for 9.7 million, but he declined the offer and resigned out of loyalty to the Cardinals since they were the only team that wanted to give him a chance coming out of college. He resigned with the Cardinals for less than half of what he was offered elsewhere. When asked why he didn’t take the other deal his reply was “why do I need that much money?”
He used to get harassed by his teammates because he used to ride an old 10 speed bike to practice (in shorts, flip flops and usually no shirt). So when he resigned, he was excited to show his teammates that harassed him his new “ride”. The was proud to show them the brand new bike he bought with his signing bonus (it was rumored to be about a $400.00 bike). That just shows you what was important to the guy.

Another thing I found out about Pat
I have read any article or book about him that I can find since he passed away.
Pat Tillman refused to be afraid. He said at an early age that he never wanted his life to be altered because he was afraid of something. He used to have a fear of heights, but in typical Pat Tillman fashion he found a way to get over it. Dude used to do handstands on the top of a 4 story building. Now I am not talking about in the middle of the roof…..I am talking about right on the edge. If he thought that there was something that could challenge him mentally or physically, he met it head on. One of the chapters talked about when he was out in the desert of Arizona and he was along the top of this small canyon (I say small being 20-25 feet across and about 40-45 feet deep) and he decided to see if he could just across and catch himself on tree near the opposite side. He backed up 20 yards, ran full speed, jumped and slammed against the tree just about halfway up. He hit so hard in knocked the wind out of him but he held on and made it down. The guy was flat out nuts and he played the game with that same passion and disregard for his body. I love guys like that!

i can't even do a handstand
I’ll have to watch some highlights of him, never did know a whole lot about him, but i love that kind of player

Tough to find highlights
I liken him to a faster, smaller Zach Thomas. He was around the ball all the time and he didn’t care about his body. No one gave him a chance to make a NFL roster and all he ever did was prove everyone wrong.

Find the time to do it brother.
An interesting fact about the Vietnam Memorial. I was there yesterday and there are always usually either park rangers or other volunteers that are around that you can ask questions to. Well there was a lot of different things that were left to honor the people that died (pictures, awards, things of that nature) and I got to thinking…..what do they do with all of those things? So I asked one of the guys that was working. He said that they have a huge warehouse where everything non-parishable (another words everything except food and flowers) is cataloged and stored. I asked the guy what the coolest thing that he remembers being left there was….and he said without a doubt that a specially made Harley was the best thing. Turns out that a group of vets, that included platoon members of the guy that died, raised money and went to Harley Davidson and asked them to make a dream bike for this guy. They towed it to DC, and just left it at the wall. The people that catalog the items didn’t know what to do. They ended up tracking down the purchaser from Harley Davidson and finally figured out what the deal was with the bike. So in that warehouse is a completely new, never riden Harley Davidson. Kind of cool.

That is really a cool memorial
I have a hard time being around the wall for too long though. Seems like there is always some asshole that wants to come over and start talking crap and saying really tasteless things. I don’t have a lot of patience for people that do that.

Damn right.....
They are talking about creating a museum for all the stuff that has been dedicated. I think it would be cool to see what has been left over the years. The WWII memorial is really cool too. Hell all of them are nice. I actually feel bad for the World War memorial (created to honor World War I). It is kind of run down and in desperate need for some upgrades. But I guess since there are no survivors from World War I it doesn’t get much attention.

Harry Patch
The last surviving British Army veteran died in July 09. There is still a British Navy vet, (residing in Australia), and a Canadian and US veteran left.

OK, sounds right
I knew that there weren’t any American WW I vets still alive. I think that the last American died about 3 or 4 years ago. I think I remember hearing something about it on Fox News.

No problem
In today’s world of primadonna’s and jackasses, everyonce in a while we deserve to hear something about a guy that warrants the attention and the admiration (even though that’s the last thing Pat wanted).

Great post
rec’d. Growing up and playing football in AZ I also had met Pat. Everything you said is exactly the way it was…was more into finding out about you than talking about himself. When I played I actually molded my style very similar to his…..AND, I rocked the blonde-locks hanging out the back of the helmet just like he did….keep in mind this is when he was still in college. Guys on the team would call me mini-tillman from time to time. Guy will be forever missed, a true american hero in every sense of the word.

It's kind of funny how I became a Tillman fan
I was stationed in Southern California and was really getting sick of the constant Pac-10 coverage on TV. I was a SEC and ACC guy and couldn’t ever get any decent coverage. Finally I resigned to watching the pigskin that was being televised and lucky for me Pat played for a Pac-10 school. After one half of a game he was playing, I was blown away by how the guy played. He should have been playing in the SEC. The guy was everywhere!!! I think he had like 18 tackles the first game I saw him play. After that I was hooked. I went to bars looking to see if ASU was being televised so I can see the madman play. Then he got drafted, in the 7th round by the way, by the Cardinals and I started following his pro career. I actually had to special order my very first Pat Tillman jersey because he wasn’t available. The rest is history. If I wasn’t stationed in California, I would never have found my hero…..so as much as I hate SoCal, I am thankful for the opportunity to watch him play.
