Coast to Coast With MHTD

thinking of making this a weekly thing, or possibly even more frequently, depending on how much time i have...I need a name for this piece if i do make it a recurring thing, so I'll need your help for this, cause i suck with coming up titles...anyway back to the show...I will be taking expressing my opinions (uncut) of Dolphins related news, as well as news around the NFL...First, i am going to share some of my thoughts on Tony Sparano's press conference from today (11/11)

  • I hate coach speak, it urks me sooo much sometimes...take this quote for example

(On injury updates to Joey Porter, Paul Soliai, Erik Walden, and Justin Smiley) - "They didn't practice today so we will see. Let's see, Walden has a little hamstring. Joey has got a little knee. Smiley got a shoulder. [Soliai] got an ankle."

what the hell?!?! Walden has a little hamstring?! i didn't know hamstrings came in different sizes, i hope mine is big...same thing with Joey and a little knee...and I sure as hell hope that Smiley has a shoulder and Soliai has an ankle, otherwise it would be pretty damn hard to play football...seriously, why can't coaches add more detail...like soreness, tear, pain, discomfort, anything, just be a bit more descriptive and not say stupid shit like that...saying he has an ankle could mean anything...this is something that has bothered me for a while

  • The receivers seems to be a hot topic here on The Phinsider, as well as with the media....

(On most important attributes for a receiver to have) - "Let's see. Separation, quickness, I think is a pretty important attribute. Hands [is a] critical factor. Speed is a critical factor. Those are the critical factors: hands, speed, elusiveness, those types of things."

couple things with this quote...he doesn't mention size, which for me is definitely a very key attribute, as well as speed and hands...so i feel like he is taking a shot at Ginn, but more on that....

  • he goes on to say....

(On if speed is the most important attribute) - "Well, speed is probably the first. Speed, I don't know, it doesn't really… in my mind and I think if you can't catch, but you can run fast, that experiment has failed in this league. In other words, you can run pretty fast, I think there have been some track guys that have been drafted that really can't catch either. There is probably… that is not a good deal. You better be able to catch it first and be able to separate, then speed I think is critical. There been some guys that have had pretty good careers in this league that didn't really run fast."

i really feel like he is taking a shot at Ginn and perhaps upset with the previous regime's decision to draft him...judging by these comments i would not be surprised if they separate from him during the offseason...actually i think i may be looking for them to...

  • he goes on to say...

(On going from 10th in the league last season in passing to 29th this year and how much of that falls on the receivers) - "I wouldn't say too much. I would say that part of it [is] we're 4th in the league, or 3rd in the league, whatever we are in rushing right now, so we've run it a bunch, had a lot of rushing opportunities. I think there's a lot of people responsible for why you don't throw it. Right now we have 23 sacks, that's responsible for why you don't do well throwing it. I think there's a lot of elements involved, quarterback's involved, receivers are involved no doubt about it. We've had some dropped balls, we've had some unexecuted route depths. Those type of things I think are things that from the receiver position can be different."

wow the media is really hating on the receivers for some reason...but TS aint having none of it, he didn't blame anyone, good man...personally, i think the receivers have a lot more to do with it than TS is willing to say...look how many we have had (namely Ginn) , that have not only cost us yards, but games...

  • now i'll veer away from the WR bashing and move on to this...

(On if he has had guys who perform lousy at practice but play well during games) - "Yes. I've had poor practice players that play well in the games. And to be honest, for me, I don't really do too well with that. In other words, I'm a guy that believes hook, line, and sinker on what I see out there on the practice field, I need to see it. Sometimes when you don't see it, it's hard to get those people to the games. You may not get that person to the game in that situation, because you want evidence, you want to see it. It's hard to do something without evidence. That's a little bit difficult for me. Until I really know the guy - and I've had some veteran players like that towards the end where they've been better game players than practice players, because they're at the end of this thing, but at least I have a body of work and some evidence to go on."

now i completely agree with him here...if a guy doesn't practice well, especially rookies, how is one supposed to know that player will perform well under pressure? you have to perform well in practice to prove you belong on the field in an actual game...all of the greats, in any sport, practice well in addition to playing great when its for real, you gotta bring your gameday ability to practices as well...i wonder who those guys on the Dolphins are...

  • " Ricky Williams Honored Wounded Veterans With Inspiring Luncheon" <http://www.miamidolphins.com/news/ricky-williams-honors-wounded-veterans-inspiring-luncheon>

now this is great, Ricky taking time to honor the troops...i love when athletes do things like this...this is what they should be focusing their time on, not drugs, guns and sex...ricky is a class act (other than his "retirement") and doesn't get enough credit...

now on to the rest of the NFL...

  • some key players for multiple teams are hurting this week, including some from our very own team

- TO has a strained hip...i thought that was an old person's injury, like 60+ yrs old people

- LT and Gates, as well as 6 other SD Chargers missed practice, LT with a strained hip (there's that injury again). Gates has a sore foot

- Brett Favre has a pulled groin...this guy is going to play no matter what...i think he has been on the injury report EVERY single week of his career, a pulled groin is not going to stop this guy from playing.

- and then of course you know about the guys tweaked from our team (that i mentioned earlier): Porter, Soliai, Smiley, and Walden

i guess its that time of the yr where it seems EVERYBODY is injured and nobody is immune to it, even the high-paid superstars.

  • Oh this one is great...Chad Johnson (sorry, i can't say Ochocinco, that is just ridiculous) had a plan to send mustard to the Pitt Steelers before their game, but decided against it on Wednesday because of his coach, Marvin Lewis...

now i have no problem with this, i think it is hysterical actually...85 has a great sense of humor and is very creative with his stunts...i will admit sometimes he goes overboard, but for the most part it is entertaining

  • and we could possibly see some history this weekend, courtesy of Dwight Freeney

Freeney has a chance to tie the record for most consecutive games with a sack with 10 which would tie him with Simon Fletcher and DeMarcus Ware...personally i hope he gets it, only because that means he will be sacking Tom Brady, which i will ALWAYS welcome, otherwise if the Colts were playing anyone else i would still prob pull for him, cause i am all for records being broken...i love watching history being made, whether it be in sports or other areas, so goodluck Freeney, i hope you get 10 this week and at least 1 next week...

if you have any thought or comments, as always please feel free to say whatever is on your mind

and as a reminder, don't forget to vote for the Pro Bowl
