Dolphins Review: The 'Hands' Edition

We talk a lot about wideouts on this blog and more often than not, hands are a big part of the discussion.

Namely, who has 'em and who doesn't.

Give yourself bonus points if you can already guess we have someone near the top........and the bottom of these stats.

No surprise:

NFL leaders in WR catch percentage (min. 20 targets)
Player Targets Rec. Drops Catch Pct.
1. Greg Camarillo, Dolphins 30 25 0 83.3

Camarillo has hauled in a whopping 83.3% of passes tossed his way. That's more than impressive, it is tops in the entire league. Not to mention he's 4% points higher than the #2 guy in the whole league, Mike Thomas of the Jags. And for extra points, note Greg has not had a single drop counted against him.

Now you probably know what is coming next...you do, don't you?

Other AFC East receivers (min. 20 targets)
Player Targets Rec. Drops Catch Pct.
21. Julian Edelman, Patriots 31 21 3 67.7
28. Randy Moss, Patriots 78 49 2 62.8
37. Jerricho Cotchery, Jets 44 27 1 61.4
73. Lee Evans, Bills 47 23 1 48.9
77. Braylon Edwards, Jets 48 23 2 47.9
80. Terrell Owens, Bills 50 23 9 46.0
84. Ted Ginn, Dolphins 43 19 6 44.2

Languishing down in, er, 84th place in the entire league, Ted Ginn checks in with a wheezing catch percentage of 44.2%. Even TO is higher, ditto Braylon Edwards who everyone says has iffy hands.

The stunning thing is that Camarillo's catch percentage is almost double that of Ginn's, 83.3 vs. 44.2. Plus Ginn has 6, count'em, six drops - a few of which would have been game winning touchdowns!

Yes as well all know, Ginn's targets involve some lower percentage passes, but nowhere near the point where he should be in the 44% range and 84th in the league. Look at Randy Moss, who gets thrown plenty of deep, lower percent passes, and he still hauls in 60+% of passes thrown his way.

A few other tidbits...

Davone Bess checks in with a healthy 72%, which is 10th best in the league.

Brian Hartline leads the team in ypc/avg at 15.9

Ricky WIlliams & Joey Haynos both have higher ypc/avg's than Ted Ginn, our supposed deep threat (11.8, 12.4 vs. 11.5)

My Christmas List:

Santa Parcells, can we please have a #1 receiver in our basket?

Camarillo should get bonus points for catching one without even using his hands!

Nice post, never seen you post before I think.

Camarillo is amazing, I hope we keep him around for years to come. He’s the kind of guy that has everything, absolutely everything a great #1 receiver has – Poise, go to guy attitude, clutch catches, excellent hands, amazing route running- minus the, uhhmm yeah, 4.4 speed, height and strength. That’s a really ,really, huge shame. Bottom line, if Greg Camarillo had Ted Ginn’s body he would probably be a top 3 receiver in the NFL. 100% positive. What he has done is huge though. Being a walk on at Stanford, part time punter, earning playing time as WR. Then being a walk on again with the Chargers and you know the rest. I have him as a friend on facebook and he really seems like a down to earth guy who really appreciates the chance to play in the NFL.

No kidding...

and if Ginn had, let’s see, Camarillo’s heart, passion, hands, and precise route running, then he’d be a top 5 receiver.

Anyone got dr. frankenstein on the dial – we have all the parts needed for a top receiver here….

Pretty darn close either way though Matty...

70 vs 69%

I’d say either way, Bess has had mostly good hands.

Think it depends on which week the stats are through

I have seem some where the stats can adjust up to 5% based on the week.

Thanks y'all

what’s surprising to me is just how low Ginn’s ypc average is.

We already figured out his hands sucked and he avoids contact like the swine flu…

Then again, maybe that explains it – fear of contact probably means little or no YAC, and little or no YAC = lower ypc average.

by Natalya on Nov 11, 2009 5:38 PM EST reply actions

the best passing plays for yac yardage are slants, posts and corners's.

Ginn doesnt have the hands to catch these passes. You need coordination and Ginn doesnt have it at all. I.e. the 4th and 15? vs. the Pats.Henne threw a perfect ball to Ginn on the run. Ginn stupidly didnt square up to try and make the catch. He tried to catch it on a dead run with just his hands. His body control is the worst I have ever seen in a wr.

I probably know Judo! How many of you can make the same boast?

by Souwantmyname on Nov 11, 2009 5:51 PM EST up reply actions

It was YPC, not YAC

Yards Per Catch, not Yards After Catch……either way Ginn is lower on the YPC because of several failed quick short “Bubble Screens” where he gained 1-2 yards. Ginn’s strength is the deep out where he can drive the CB back and get him to committ to turning his hips in order to honor Ginns speed and threat to go deep. The deep out keeps him from having to worry about the safety killing his ribs going across the middle.

by Vanman_FishFan13 on Nov 12, 2009 1:42 PM EST up reply actions

I think it is hands, as in terrible ones, as we all agree but also...

a rather obvious avoidance (re: fear!) of contact. And on those routes you mentioned, you often times may get hit.

Ginn as punt returner!?!?!

I´m not a Ginn fan at all… but isn´t the punt returner always taking hits? I beleive Ginn´s problems are in his mind more than in his skills. Letñs just keep him as punt returner and find decent WRs. Camarillo stays.

natalya

do you post on miami herald with an avatar showing a young child on yr lap? you sound a lot like that lady, if so — very anti-ginn, singlemindedly so i would say, tho apparently a reformed ginn-basher who used to favor or tolerate him. sorry if you are someone different than that madame lafarge of ginn performance. the tone is similar.
as u can surmise, i still root for tg and think he’s something special. i’ve heard bellichek wants him, but that may be a rumor. you have him missing a ‘few’… ‘game-winning’ touchdowns. i certainly remember one, as do we all. what were the others? the lady from the miami herald posted after the two ginn/ jets runbacks that ginn was ‘singlehandedly’ responsible for three losses.

LOL LOL LOL

I might become a jets fan before that.

um, ok thanks

was it just the one missed touchdown pass with indy then you want to put on ginn? in your post u have him missing a ‘few.’ i’d like to get past the ginn ‘dispute’ to say realistically we are 1-7 without ginn’s contribution. there are more than 50 guys on the roster. how many have singlehandedly won 1 or 2 games for us?

by a1a on Nov 14, 2009 9:22 AM EST up reply actions

are you serious?

yes ginn had a great game returning kicks against ny. let’s not forget that there was 10 other guys blocking for him. no one player wins or losses a game. although ginn getting mightly close. i talk junk about him, but i really wish he would wake up. just don’t think he ever will.

I know this is blasphamy to defend Ginn but...

You can’t really compare his numbers to Randy Moss. For one, Randy is a big receiver who can out jump DBs on underthrown passes. Second, he has Tom Brady throwing him passes, who has a strong arm and is fairly accurate with it. Ginn is barely 6 foot, 180lbs, and has had a noodle arm and two first time starters throwing him passes. Yes, the six drops are inexcusable and I’m not gonna defend him on that one. I think they’ve finally figured out how to use Ginn. In 4 or 5 WR sets, it spreads the field and allows him to use his quickness. We all know he can get open in those situations, it’s just a matter of whether he can make the catch.

by luvs2drnk on Nov 12, 2009 6:15 AM EST reply actions

Yeah, you can't compare Moss to Ginn...

one guy is only the most talented WR of his generation and the other is some bozo who got on the team via a favor from a family friend ………….

we might as well have a package that has either Smith or Davis split as a WR, it couldnt hurt at this point.
