Joe Namath - The most overated player in NFL history (VOTE! NEW POLL ADDED)
You heard me - Joe Namath is the most overated player in NFL History. It's about time someone spoke the truth. Everytime I hear Jets fans talk of Mark Sanchez being "The next Joe Namath" I break out in laughter - because I hope thats true. I myself was brainwashed for a long time - believing people when they mentioned him as one of the all-time greats - then I did a little research - and nearly crapped my pants. Let's start off my taking a quick look at his numbers - just your everyday generic stats a QB is judged upon.
Let's start with the stat that every true leader is judged upon - his win loss record.
77 wins, 108 losses, 3 ties.
How many NFL Quarterbacks are in the Hall of Fame with this kind of record? 77 wins divided by 13 seasons - thats not even an average of 6 wins a season. Hall of Famer? All-Time great? No - not even close. Closer to a tag of "The Original Trent Edwards" I would say.
Next let us look at another stat Quarterbacks are judged on - Interception and Touchdown totals.
173 Touchdowns, 220 Interceptions.
Really? 188 games played - and the guy throws 220 Interceptions? Less touchdowns than games played? Serious? Diffrent times or not - that is horrible. A player taken high in the first round - and given a NFL record contract , with the above numbers isn't called a Hall of Famer - it's called a bust. If you told me Chad Henne would finish his career with these numbers - I would guess he played for 6 diffrent teams over a 15 year span of shittiness. This is the standard Jets fans hold other quarterbacks to? I guess thats what Browning Nagle was all about.
In 1999 Namath was named to the Sporting News "Top 100" players of all-time - what a crock of shit that is. Three division titles in 13 years is "Greatness"? Bullshit. Your telling me a guy that finished his career with a little over 26,000 yards passing is in that kind of all-time company? Check out a short list of players with MORE career passing yards than "BJ".
- Rich Gannon
Seriously - Trent Green? I'm no Jets football historian - maybe they ran the ball a crapload - but wow. What - you want a stat someone like Ron "I jerk it to X's and O's" Jaworski would find as good evidence of suck? How bout Quarterback rating then? That's a stat most modern day analyst think tells the story. What's this All-Time great's career passer rating?
65.5
I also have no real idea WTF a passer rating even means - I'll admit it. What I do know is a shitty quarterback when I see them - so I will compare that to some of the shittier quarterbacks that come to recent memory.
A.J. Feeley - 69.9 - Sooooo close Broadway - sorry.
J.P. Losman - 75.6 - Serious dude? He is the QB of the Las Vegas Locomotives. Cmon.
JaMarcus Russell - 72.2 - WOW - worse than a QB that struggles to zip his pants.
Ray Lucas - 77.1 - And I think both teams can tell you how bad Ray Lucas sucks balls.
We all know Joe Namath is known for his guarantee of victory in Super Bowl 3 - he invented the loud mouth cocky guarantee so many have tried since. You would figure winning MVP of that game - and being known most for his guarantee of that game - would mean he was nasty that day. You would be WRONG. Chizzzeeeeckkk It Izzoooout.
17-28 (Meh..) 206 yards (Meh....) NO TOUCHDOWNS. 1 INT... NO PASSES THROWN IN THE 4TH QUARTER! Now THAT is clutch QB play - MVP caliber even.
What - did he hand the ball off well? No. The Jets D had 4 picks in the game - Id say that "Most Valuable". This following a season where he completed 49% of his passes - and threw more INT's than TD's (17-15). Fraudy McFraderstein if I can say so myself.
How did Namath finish his career - with total suck and disapointment. Heading into the 1975 season the Jets were big favorites - they finished 3-11. Same deal in 1976 - 3-11. Namath went on to play 3 totally awesome games for the LA Rams - before getting turned into a human pretzel on MNF - and never playing again.
So while real greats like Dan Marino are all over TV spreading their knowledge of the game these days - Joe Namath, well he's doing stuff like this.
So to young Jets fans who believe "Broadway Joe" was one of the greats - sorry to bust your brainwash bubble. Numbers don't lie - especially the all important win/loss record. You want Mark Sanchez to be like "BJ" when he grows up? Me too.

It was actually pretty funny over there today. Even Matty mixed it up with them a bit. One of them told me off and then told Matty to move out of NJ. Good stuff from a group of morons over there.

I will tell you exactly how that happens.
Most of the media is based in NY. It was even worse back then. Anytime there is voting on anything with the media you will see a total NE bias. If he had played in any other part of the country and had those pathetic numbers and 1 superbowl he would have never had a chance.

Jet's fans are so retarted. They have the same three guys posting their defense over and over.
way to say we are 1-3 ten times. It’ll be that much sweeter when we kick their ass. If they made a thread over here trash talking we would have AT LEAST ten guys jumping on the defense. It’s actually a little funny.

Attention Spans and Superficial Understanding
Numbers can be highly deceiving. I’m not a Jets fan and although I was a kid when Namath was playing, I knew enough football to understand why he is considered a great QB. Yeah …… he threw a lot of picks but the guy read defenses better than any QB I’ve ever seen. And …. the game was very different in those days. QB’s did a lot more downfield passing than throwing safe dump-off passes. Nothing against Montana ….. he was a truly great QB but …… Walsh brought in a pass-oriented offense that completely revised the pro grame. In Namath’s era there was none of this. If there were, he would have had better stats but, then again, he probably would have been a lot less electrifying to watch as QB. As tp the overall W-L record, the fact is that he played on a lot of bad Jets teams. But the few years when they did come together and win, they were formidable and exciting. If one looks at career stats alone, you’re not going to find Sandy Koufax in many leading categories, either. But …… he was hands-down the best pitcher of his era.

Sonny Jurgensen (1957-1974)- 255 TDs and 189 INTs with 32,224 yrds
Otto Graham(1946-1955) 174 TDs and 135 INTs with 23,500 yrds…And this is with 114 starts as opposed to Namath’s 140
Johnny Unitas (1956-1973) 290 TDs and 253 INTs with 40,000+ yrds
Fran Tarkenton (1961-1978) 342 TDs and 266 INts with 47,000 yrds

I didn’t grow up in NY and list them because I follow them now. It has nothing to do with being a “fan.” I grew up in LA but, of course, LA no longer has a team with the Rams in STL. My comments on Namath are objective.
by Jeff I on Oct 10, 2009 3:13 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
One other thing about Namath, it is usually informative to find out what the players from his era thought about him. I’d argue that this is much more telling than someone on a blog looking up stats and spouting off fairly meaningless cliches trashing the guy. When you read comments from people who played with Namath and against him, it is pretty easy to understand why he is in the HOF.

by PhininMinn on Oct 10, 2009 3:36 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Namath and Stats
One record he broke was passing for over 4,000 yards in one season. And this was for a 14-game season. I’m not sure how many times that has been done since then in 14 games but, at the time, it was significant from a statistical perspective.
That said, again I make the argument that it is not all about stats. Sandy Koufax won about 160+ games in his entire career. If someone who didn’t know him from that era based their opinions on his overall win total, they would be so off the mark that it would be comical.

Win/Loss isn't all about leadership....
It also depends on the team you’re on. If you can’t run the ball, or your defense can’t stop your opponent, it doesn’t matter how good of a QB you are, just ask Marino and Moon.

Well, now I know where you got your stats from......wikipedia.
By their numbers he played in 188 games. Yet NFL.com says he only played in 140, as well as pro-football reference, and sporthaven.com. His record was 62-63-4. Not .500, but not well below either. You might want to double check your stats, or at least go to a reputable site for statistics.

www.NFL.com
www.pro-football-reference.com
www.sporthaven.com
sports.jrank.org (shows 146 games)
These are the top ones that came up when I searched on google, and all but one say 140 games.
Yes, his passing stats aren’t stellar, but I don’t think they’re horrendous either. When he retired in 1977, he was the record holder for most yards passing in a season. Sure it doesn’t mean much to us now, but I’m sure it helped him out when voting time came around.

You forgot to mention the 3 TD passes he threw to get to the Super Bowl
As well as winning AFL rookie of the year, Super Bowl MVP, 4 AFL All Star games, and AFL MVP. So obviously someone thought he was doing something right. I realize most of this was during the late 60’s in the AFL, but he battled knee injuries throughout the 70’s.

when last year I studied his stats, which really are pretty poor for a HOFer…the only reason he’s an HOFer is because of the “guarantee”. End of Story! Even my brother, who IS a Jets fan, thinks the way I do, and he used to watch Namath on TV all the time back in late 60s.

I'll agree he was overrated, but not the most overrated.
I’m not sure where you got your stats from. I’m showing him only playing in 140 games. His win/loss was 62-63-4. The biggest problem with your argument is that you’re not putting it into context. Namath’s last season was 1977, remember this was years before the west coast offense made it’s debut in the NFL. So the people you should be comparing him to should be QBs from his time (ie. Griese, Bradshaw, Tarkenton, Unitas, Starr, Staubach, and Stabler) You also failed to mention how he ranked the years he played. 7 of 13 years – top 10 in passes completed. 8 of 13 years – top 10 passing yards (6 of those top 5). First QB to pass for over 4000 yards. 7 of 13 years – top 5 TD passes. That crappy passer rating you mentioned? From 65-69, his rating was never higher than 75, yet it was still in the top 5 in the league. So while he doesn’t have comparable stats by todays standards, they were pretty good stats back then.
by luvs2drnk on Oct 10, 2009 12:28 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I disagree
First of all I looked at many sites for my info…and they all gave me the same numbers…so i dunno where you got urs.
Above someone posted QBs of the same eras numbers….MUCH better.
So in his time…..did not winning football games make him a HOF’er?
220 picks….any….era……that…..sucks.
I actually am amazed….I just did some deeper looking into his stuff….this same article has been written like 50 times lol. If i woulda seen that i wouldnt have written this …oh well.
You wanna blame losses and interceptions on the era…go ahead. Plenty of guys playing around the same time didnt suck as bad

220 picks in any era sucks?
So you would apply that tag to Blanda, Marino, Favre, Elway, Unitas, Moon, and Tarkenton? I’m not blaming the era for losses and INTs, I’m simply stating you should compare him to players in his own era for your argument. As for the other QBs mentioned above, Otto Graham was not during Namath’s time, so you have 3 QBs with better stats during his time. That makes him suck? For every guy you can name that had better stats than Namath during his career, I can name you at least 5 that were worse.

If they didnt throw so much….HOW THE HELL DO YOU GET PICKED OF 220 TIMES?
yes….when u play 13 seasons….and throw 220 picks….that sucks.,…if you do that you better back it up with double that many tds and some big time wins u lead ur team to
once again….you have nothing to back up ur arguement that he is an ALL TIME GREAT. dont prove to me he didnt completely suck…tell me why hes a hall of famer.

Its always been a basic belief of the NFL that even a decent QB will
have more TD’s than INT’s. This dude is 47 in the negative. Thats friggin terrible.

So by your basic belief....
These HOFers should not be in the HOF
George Blanda (-41)
Jim Finks (-33)
Y.A. Tittle (-6)
Norm Van Brocklin (-5)
Bobby Layne (-47)
Bob Waterfield (-31)
Sammy Baugh (-16)

You may have got me when I forgot to state during the modern era.
The modern era as defined by most as the time following the merger (1966) till now. Had you used your own criteria that you have brought up so many times here then I doubt any of those QB’s could even be considered.
George Blanda did play in the modern era but was not always a QB especially towards the end of his career. Anyone who last 26 years in the NFL is going to get voted in the the HOF based if on nothing else longevity.
Jim Finks was not voted in based on what he did as a player but as an administrator. Big swing and miss there brother.
Y.A. played from 48 to 64.
N.V.B. played from 49 to 60.
Bob Layne played from 48 to 62.
Bob Waterfield played from 45 to 52.
Sammy Baugh played from 37 to 52.
And the star of our argument Broadgay Joe played from 65 to 77. All but one out of 12+ years in the modern era.
Unfortunatly despite your poor argument he still sucks!

Modern era or not, a forward pass is a forward pass is it not?
That actually strengthens my argument as to how the selection process has changed over the years. Sure, by todays standards half the players in the HOF wouldn’t make it in. But in 1985, when the west coast offense was just starting to blossom and passing stats were going through the roof most of the voters were still old school vets. So he probably got more votes than he should have based on his moxie and one great season because it was more impressive back then.

Tell me then....
Before 1979, how many QB’s had thrown for over 4000 yards?
How many of those guys that no one thinks of as special, held NFL records or boldly guaranteed they would win the Super Bowl against a heavy favorite?
Your missing the point of my argument again. I’m not defending Namath as an all time QB, or even as a great QB. But I do think he was better than what his stat line reads. Most of you should realize stats don’t tell the whole story, otherwise we’d all be calling Ronnie Brown a bust.

Once again I refer you to the HOF voting committee of 1985.
They were looking at the same facts you see before you, and they still saw enough to vote him in.
Here’s a little test for you.
4 QBs avgs per year, 2 are HOFs, 2 aren’t. If you were voting, which 2 would you pick?
1. 2009 yards, 15/15 TD/INT, 51.9 comp %, 70.9 rating
2. 2390 yards, 14/11 TD/INT, 55.4 comp %, 78.5 rating
3. 2708 yards, 17/13 TD/INT, 57.0 comp %, 81.8 rating
4. 2869 yards, 16/15 TD/INT, 58.8 comp %, 80.2 rating
No fair cheating, just pick based on the facts available. Which two of these are HOF worthy?

argument that was voted to the HOF based on what he did as a GM. At that point your argument lost all validity as far as I am concerned.
Bottom line, based on what he accomplished vs his reputation he is the most overated player I have ever seen. I cant find any reason to argue with the argument that rz made with the post to begin with. Was he the worst QB ever? No but nor was that the argument.
Anyway I have tired of this argument so good luck finding someone that you can get to agree with!

between a QB throwing more INTs than TDs in the 40’s and 50’s than there was in the 60’s. But I was nice enough to overlook that. I admit the list I referenced for the HOF had all members so I erred with one of my 7 picks. I was simply stating I don’t believe he’s the most overated, nor was he as bad as everyone was making him out to be.

I never said he was an all time great.
I wouldn’t even put him in the top 50 QB’s of all time, and I agreed with you that he’s overated. I just don’t think he’s the most overated player in the history of the NFL. I honestly don’t know many people who would even say Namath is an all time great. I only argued that you should have compared him to QBs of his time, based his HOF credentials against theirs, and he wasn’t horrible. As for my own opinion on whether he desreved to get into the HOF. I don’t think he desreved it, but he was a media darling, and he had decent enough stats before the west coast offense bloated passing statistics.
by luvs2drnk on Oct 10, 2009 3:39 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
The bottom line is that he is WAY overated due to the bias of the
media led by the mostly NY based media at the time. I think if you read through all the comments that you would have to concede that he was compared to several QB’s of his time and yet it still shows that he sucks!
Furthermore I think one of the main points that he was trying to make was that the Jets fans hold this guy up like some sort of god that other QB’s should be compared to. This further going to prove what fucktard assclowns that entire bunch is! I can personally think of about a hundred guys I would rather my QB pattern his game after. All of this also does not overshawdow that the guy was a walking clown then and a walking joke now!

Among those quarterbacks whose career somewhat overlapped with Namath, his quarterback quarterback rating is much much worse than Hall of Famers Roger Staubach, Len Dawson, Sonny Jurgensen, Bart Starr, Fran Tarkenton, John Unitas. But he also lags behind Frank Ryan, Bob Berry, Don Meredith, Roman Gabriel, Earl Morrall, Craig Morton, Greg Landry, Darryl Lamonica, John Brodie, the oft mentioned Milt Plum, Billy Kilmer, Bill Munson, Bill Nelsen, Charley Johnson, Tom Flores, John Hadl, James Harris, Archie Manning and Jim Hart. He ranks 163rd all time in quarterback rating — and there are only 211 quarterback who threw enough passes to even qualify.

Broadway Joe was great.....
because he was a winner and a character at a time when the NFL embraced characters. Not like today when the NFL would rather employ robots.
Namath won games, sometimes on his sheer will alone. Well not alone, but as a leader of the offense. Forget the stats, he was good. Namath, Bradshaw, and Kenny “The Snake” Stabler were all winning QBs who deserve to be included as greats. They were the “bad boys” of the NFL at a time when QBs didn’t wear skirts. Bad boys who went in, ran their offense their way, pissing off their coaches but winning or losing games after giving their all. They usually won more than they lost.
Yes Namath was a Jet, but that was before the Jets were relevant to the Dolphins. So at least give him his due.

Marino Would Say Namath Was An HOF QB
This argument is such BS because it is mostly based on a Jets vs. Dolphins agenda and most of the posters were probably not born when Namath was in his prime years. Marino himself has said that Namath was his idol when he was a young QB growing up in Western Pennsylvania. The people who were around at that time and following football understand Namath’s greatness. Throw all the stats out that you want but ….. I would bet that 90% of the players, sportswriters and fans of that era would rate Namath over Fran Tarkenton, Len Dawson, Don Meredith, Griese and others. This is the reason internet boards tend to be so superficial and specious ……. a lot of ill-informed posters who make unequivocal statements based on no real knowledge of a given person, issue, etc.

1st of all….ESPN agrees.

Second of all….I could care less if Marino idolized him – I have idolized some shitty players in my bad as well.
His record is poor….ALL of his stats are below average….and he is most known for a game he didnt even play well in.
Until you have concrete stuff….other than “Everyone would say” or “This is BS”…then we dont have much to talk about.

Some concrete stuff for ya'.
At least 80% of the 1985 HOF voting committee voted Namath in.
(Not sure how many voters there were at that time, but by the current formula it would have been at least 39 voters. One from each city with an NFL franchise, and 11 at large members)
So that would imply a diverse group of media, with what would assume would be a fairly abundant amount of football acumen, deemed his accomplishments worthy of enshrinement.
His box score for the SB was 17-28, 206 yds, 0 TD, 0 INT, 83.3 rating. Which at the time, was actually considered a good game.
As for ESPN agreeing with you, I doubt everyone at ESPN agrees with you, but definitely the writer Jeff Merron does.
And those are my final thoughts about this, I promise ; )

You guys act like the field was 25 yards back then…..i see lots of passes…..and lots of interceptions. Lots of games….and more losses than wins……lots of chances to will his team to victory….and lots of fails.
Under .500. Crappy stats. Overated to me. He by no means should be considered a great – give him the Hall of Fame for being a part of the game growing more popular, fine – but dont tell me he was an alltime great player.

a lot of us were alive or old enough to realize it but we have all heard how great he was at some point. Everyone has seen the guarentee and been told what a hero he was. When you see the facts you like holy shit thats this guy that everyone holds up. I think a lot of it has to do with NY and the fact that hes the greatest player the Jets have ever had. I'm sure this will start a whole nother debate, but it's actually a tie between..
Joe Montana and Tom Brady
by luvs2drnk on Oct 11, 2009 9:49 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
interesting
Montana, to me, wasn’t overrated so much as he was one of the rare players that was absolutely PERFECT for the system he played in. I think every good player has a offense that would fit them like a glove and elevate them to a HOF-level player, and Montana was one of those who got lucky and played in that system. It also turned out to be a very good system. Take one part very good player, one part very good system, you end up with a HOFer. I think in another offense, he may not have been AS good, but he was still one of the best.
Brady is a tough one, because up until 2007, nobody would’ve said he was a “system QB,” then he has his best year in a pass-happy system, and the team goes 11-5 the next year WITHOUT him, and suddenly he’s being called overrated and a “system QB.” Also, his career stats in Super Bowls, 100-155, 65% (actually BETTER than his career average), 7 TD’s, and 1 INT. He put those stats up in 2 different systems. He may be a product of great teams and great players around him, but him and Billy B are the only constants in those 4 Super Bowls, and he performed GREAT in all of them.
I think both of them are a little overrated, but that’s mostly because they seen as larger-than-life legends, and NOBODY can live up to that. Both of them were all-timers though..

I've always thought Brady was a System QB.
I’ve thought that since 2003-2004. How could it be two different systems, when one of the constants you named is the guy who designed the system? Brady is most successful when you give him 5 WR sets, that spreads the defense out, and creates a weaker pass rush. Hell, Matt Cassell directed almost the same offense to 11-5 (only major subtraction was Stallworth).
The reason I say Montana, is not because I don’t think he was a good QB. He was. But I think he gets more credit than he deserves. The guy played with Jerry Rice, John Taylor, Roger Craig, and Dwight Clark for almost his whole career! Yet he never threw for over 4000 yards, ever. But he seems to get all the credit for the 4 SBs they won. He played with 4 HOF players, and had 2 HOF coaches. He gets labeled the best QB ever becuase of the team he played for. How many SB do you think Marino would have won with the same team? Substitute Testaverde or Kosar with Montana with that team, and I think you’d get similar results.

Since the 5 yard chuck rule was established...
It was only brought up to the refs to enforce it more strictly once during Marino’s tenure (1994). The other time was in 2004 or 2005. So it had very little effect on his career.

Belichick didn't design the offensive system
He won 3 Super Bowls under Charlie Wies’ offense, and he went undefeated and almost won the Super Bowl under McDaniels system. Two COMPLETELY different offenses.

nope
watch the way they played. NE was more of a balanced team during the Super Bowl wins, and Brady did more Play Action. The reason he NEVER put up 07-like numbers before was because he was never given that kind of ferrari to drive around. Before, they had a good D, decent weapons on offense, and put long drives together based around running the ball well and having Brady pick up key 3rd downs and get chunks throwing the ball. In 07, they put him in the Shotgun, gave him 4-5 WR’s every single play, and let him work. Belichick of course has his hand in the offense, but for the most part, it was 2 different systems.

Based on what I use to think of Namath (based on reputation) without looking at all the numbers I would have probably voted for him as well. Knowing what I know and comparing him to others of his era the fact just do not live up to the hype. He is this still the most overated guy I can think of.

well said
lol
Facts 1 – Jets Fans 0
Bottom line, Namath was overrated. End-o-story. Look it up. A lot of ill-informed fanboys still think he was an all-time great based on “The Guarantee.” Those of us who actually study the history of the game and it’s greatest players fail to see what made Namath so great. 4,000 yards in a season is impressive. Completing only 52% of your passes and throwing 28 INT’s to only 26 TD’s in that same year? Not so impressive anymore. Also, to put that “4,000 yard” stat in perspective, he led the league in pass attempts by 64 (two full games worth). They were also 8-5-1 that year (meh). The following year, he threw 111 LESS PASS ATTEMPTS, STILL threw 2 more INT’s than TD’s (17-15), and completed less than 50% of his passes (to be fair, the top 10 QB’s that year all completed lower than 50% of their passes). Since he was actually above-average that year completion percentage-wise (at least for that season), I compared it to 1972 (a year he completed exactly 50%, his career average) and of the top 10 QB’s in completions that year, 8 of the 10 were above 50%, including Ken Anderson (a rookie). The two that weren’t? Jim Plunkett, and Joe Namath.
Namath was DEFINITELY not the worst QB of all-time, and he’s probably better than 60-70% of QB’s that played the game, but he belongs nowhere NEAR a list of all-time greats. Regardless of what the media and the HOF voters thought, you are judged by your win/loss record, your stats, and your performance in big games. Namath, in all 3 categories, was average at best. For his era, for all-time, just average. And with the hype he got, and still gets, as an all-time great, deserving to be mentioned in the same breath as Montana, Elway, Marino and the like, he’s one of the most overrated players of all-time. End-o-story.
I rec’d the hell out of this RZ. Once Matty allows me to rec more than once (still waiting, Matty) I’m recing it again lol. Well done.

Johnny U = all-time great. He played in the same era, yet his win/loss record was 118-64-4, he was a career 55% passer, and he had 37 more TD’s (290) than INT’s (253). He was also pretty horrible in his Super Bowl win (3-9, 88 yards, 2 INT’s, and a 75yd TD).

one question though.. where did you find his career record?
Pro-football-reference.com (the most reliable site I’ve come across for football stats) has him at 62-63-4. You might have the overall record of his TEAMS during his career, not necessarily the record in games he played. He can’t really get a win/loss if he wasn’t in lol

I dunno...
i googled it….i looked a few places and they all had this….i even looked at some other article written about this subject afterwards…and they too have the record i have.
u know me….i never look for stats…so i didnt know about u guys n your nerdy little stat sites lol.
i think maybe this one is everything. presaeason…playoffs….all of it.
im over it anyway…they say hes 1 under 500….to me thats less game…and that means he threw that many picks in that few games? omfg

As far as ill-informed posters I would put most of the people that post on here
on a regular basis up against just about any blog out there. A lot of the conventional so called wisdom of the time was influnced but the NY media bias. Thus most of your argument holds very little water. I had a couple of other points but rz beat me to them.
Work on your argument a bit more before attempting to make it next time!

LOL
just read a list on bleacherreport.com (horrible) that has LT, TO, Ray Lewis, and Vince Young in the top 10 overrated players. Ridiculous. LT is one of the best RB’s of all-time. Ray Lewis, likewise as a LB. Vince Young is rated very accurately by most NFL fans (he sucks), and TO, like him or not, is 2nd all-time in TD receptions (aka 1st all-time in the non-Jerry Rice WR record category).
IMO, the MOST overrated player of all-time Ted Ginn lol
no seriously, I really don’t know. Gotta think about this one, throw some suggestions out there.

Token Fat Guy
Another example of people thinking that “just cause you are big, you must be good as well.” He was merely popular, specifically because of his size. Namath is popular due to his personality. Neither on real accomplishments.

Another guy that is remembered for one season and one superbowl.
That reminds me of one of the biggest shameful mistakes ever by a coach in the history of the Superbowl. They fed that fat bastard the ball for a TD and Walter Peyton, one of the greatest all time players in the NFL never got a TD in that one Superbowl in which he played. I always thought Ditka was an ass for that. He did it when they already had the game in pocket and he should have been trying to get Peyton a TD in the Superbowl not trying to get some fat side show a TD. What an ass.

Romo was much, much better under Parcels.
The team is now run like a damn country club. There has been no discipline since Parcels left. They are by far the most underachiving team in the league. If you think he is overrated then you have never heard the fans around here in DFW. He is blasted daily on the news and all day long on sports talk radio. He may be overrated somewhere else but not in his home town.

None of the Fans like him...
The media and Jerry Jones are the ones propping him up as a stud. People who don’t study their football and listen to the braindrain think he is good. And unfortunately, the majority of the country thinks he is good, and is stunned when he “under performs” which is actually how he normally performs.

Alright my Dad is a HARDCORE Dolphins fan, no doubt
and he HATES the Jets with HUGE passion. But he was around during Namath’s time and he says that it wasn’t about Joe’s numbers that makes him a HoFer. It’s what he did for the league. Think about it, the NFL was not always the massive super power of sports that it is now. Namath helped put it on the map with his antics. Now I don’t think that that warrents a HoF induction, and I certainly agree that he is overratted, BUT if he helped the league in ANY kind of way to get it to the sport that we know and love today, then I think he gets a LITTLE bit of credit in my book. BTW, Jets fans still think that he is good. What a bunch of dougetards.

Thank you Rzayo...
I actually did a ton of reserach many years ago on why Namath was so overrated. Fact is that he was amazing in college but his knee injury really hampered his career. He still had an amazing arm, and tons of potential but so did/does Ryan Leaf. One of the HOF criteria is the dominance one has over his peers. This is crucial b/c it is so hard to compare players across generatation. So, to compare Namath with his peers he’s less than anything special.
: HOF Peers: Staubach, Griese, Bradshaw, Unitas, Dawson, Tarkenton, Bradshaw- You can’t argue with them:
Now tell me how Namath belongs in their company….. Half his non-HOF peers played better than him:
Ken Anderson, Ken Stabler, Roman Gabriel, Jurgenson, Frank Ryan, Don Mededith, Earl Morrall, Greg Landry, Norm Snead, Jim Hart, John Hadl, Bert Jones, Billy Kilmer, John Brodie…..
Namath wouldn’t play if he were on so of those other teams…..
NY MEDIA BULLSHIT!! Don’t get me started on Muhammed Ali either… A great fighter and champion but not “clearly” the “GREATEST”- He lost a lot of fights and went the distance with “NO BODIES”, all his major victories have some conrtoversy, and he rarely ever “dominated”….
Don’t beleive the Hype!!!!
