Jets Pass Rush: Tyler Thigpen time?
I'm not advocating TT over Henne, but just to throw a monkey wrench into Rex Ryan's plans to pressure Henne with aggressive blitzes, why not begin the game with Tyler Thigpen as a part of the Wildcat (Ronnie still is the QB). I trust his skills and experience more than Pat White at this stage (TT would be the 2nd QB and Pat White the emergency 3rd QB). The main idea is that TT would take a pitch from Ronnie and try to break containment on the blitz, or at least stay alive long enough for a receiver to shake loose. It is something Rex Ryan may not be expecting and definitely not planning for.
Formation would look like:
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ TE LG C RG RT LT _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ BH
DB _ _ _ _ RW
_ _ _ _ _ __ _ _ _ _ _RB
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _TT
Option 1: Ricky motion right for Wildcat handoff
Option 2: Ronnie run or pitch (to TT)
Option 3: Tyler run or pass option
Formation could morph (no huddle) to "T-Bone Spread" with Tyler Thigpen as QB
DB_ _ _ _ _ _ _ LT LG C RG RT TE _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ __ _ _ _ _ _ RW _ TT _ RB _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _BH
I want to emphasize that Henne is still the future and Thigpen is the backup, but
under the circumstances of facing an aggressive blitzing defense and having shaky protection,
it would be wise to surprise the defense with a special package and force it to adjust on the fly instead of dial up pre-prepared blitz after pre-prepared blitz.
This is definitely a risky approach and you are relying on Thigpen to improvise and build chemistry with his receivers on the fly, but Rex Ryan has proven painfully to Miami that you can't just bring the same-old same-old Wildcat and expect to have success.

I say no
leave Henne in there and don’t be cute. We have WC plays if we wanna mix things up. I would absolutely LOVE for Ronnie to pass in the formation again.
After watching what Cam did to Beck a couple of years ago, I’m VERY protective of pulling our young QB. Leave the kid in there, he’s gotta learn.
After their last game on offense, and our last game on defense, we might stick our Fins so far up “The Sanchise’s” @ss he’ll have to take the J-E-T back to NY laying on his stomach.

I think we’ve been saving a WC pass for this game. I have a feeling Rex is gonna say (between bites, of course) “we’re gonna pack it in on the WC and make Henne beat us.” So look for something like 9 in the box. The same little Counter Pass to Fasano that was wiiiiiide open vs NE last year would look nice this week too.

Here here....
let’s not get, as Neo said ‘cute’, with our personnel. Not when you are just starting to build Henne’s confidence and feel for the offense. The last thing that would be needed I think, is to pull him and put in thigpen.
I suspect what Nicky said above regarding Rex Ryan (his gameplan and eating habits!! :) ) will be the likely scenario. So Henne will have to make some plays in this game. The jets kept Bree’s in check last week so I expect it to be hard for us on offense…
there are gonna overload and when they do hit the slot man. there defence is killer, it will be interesting chess match!
againest the jetts, we might be advised to be in the shootgun the whole game!!

i am not sure that is what this post is advocating, pulling Henne at QB and replacing him with TT
Henne comes out on WC plays anyway now. anyone notice that last game? He is not suggesting replacing Henne with Thigpen. He is saying that, as a variation on WC packages, put Thigpen in, either in the backfield with Ronnie or out at wideout (i added that, since we have all seen him run it).
Now, IF that is what he is suggesting, i could see them trying that for a few plays, if we can’t slow down the pass rush. But i would not open up the game with it, and i would not leave Thigpen in at QB.
However, my preference in this is much the same as always. i would rather see us just be able to come out and win playing vanilla old power football.

Wouldn't Thigpen be better throwing than Ronnie?
All it takes is a pitch backward (much like a flea-flicker toss from RB to QB)
Thigpen has 426 career attempts and 18 TDs with 13 Ints.
He would definitely be a greater threat to throw and would force the safeties to back off or get burned for run-blitzing.
Plus, with an unfamilar formation, the defense might be less aggressive and get burned when it was aggressive.
With the new formation, the Wildcat might be less effective, but if you can pass regularly out of a modified form of it, it is to your advantage, especially when Ryan has proven he knows how to stop the regular wildcat.

The Jets are much better in their pass protection
than they are in their run defense… why play to their strengths? Pound it down their throats in typical WC fashion.

How about do it with Henne,
I don’t think you need to bring TT in, our most successful passes out of the wildcat have been from Penne, outside the one from last years Pats game, yea you know the one, lol, but I think it’s a good idea but it would work just as well as TT.

Exactly I love our WC plays but let Henne do them lets truly see the ability of this kid. And then and only then if Henne doesn’t hack it then you throw TT into the mix. But let Henne try atleast. I may be the biggest TT fan because I like his abilities and size. But I’m definatly more for team chemistry fan. And if Henne can get a good chemistry with his WR then I’m all for letting Henne play first.
Henne isnt as mobile as CP
so he’s gonna have to fly to get to Ronnie on the fleaflicker, if anything split PW out wide for that play.

Putting TT in the backfield nullifies the advantage of the WC.
Not having a QB wasting space during run plays allows for an extra blocker on the line. That’s why Pennington always lined up at wideout—they still had to put a DB on him so he ate up a defender.

exactly
and having Ronnie throw it is a surprise and a half. The minute Thigpen gets the ball, the D will be in pass coverage. When Ronnie gets the snap, the last thing on the D’s mind is pass

Time for Dfinz
NJY won 3 on Sanchez long TD-Passes.
It means: For you DFINZ safeties, you must now raise to the occasion.
You must focus.
Stay behind WR at least 5 yrds and came back to tackle.
Don’t allow WR out run you. You see them picking up speed, react immediatly, run backwars for 3 or 4 yards to assess WR route intention: if long then turn around and gain speed, if short, come back and tackle.
If WR catches pass, WR can not pass your body, you must tackle him even if it is the last thing you do in your life. Priority: try wrap waist first, then leggs( If you first miss the waist then you have the leggs but if you first miss the leggs then you have nothing and he is gone to score on you soul.)
Don’t even try to get in front of the WR with your extended arm to break the pass. 75% chance you will not touch the ball and will fall because of your body inertia. Better yet, give yourself a 100% chance of a body tackle when the WR is in front you and you can direct the full force of your body inertia to the middle of the numbers. This means no big plays for touchdowns and possible incompletion.
If WR challanges you to a speed match, then match it you have the speed, A fast sprint on along ball will not last more than 3 seconds. So run as fast as you can next to your WR looking at him, and in your mind count “thounsand and one, thousand and two” and imediatly search for the ball trayectory to start falling to you. This is key: first 2 second run with WR looking at WR, last 2 seconds search ball trayectory while running. Then either intercept , tackle or break pass. Tough to do, but you can do it.
Study the field and try your shoeson the field. Make sure you will not slip and fall. See if there are high and low grass areas, dry and wet areas. Practice rapid speed starts, backwards stars, let your legs and feet adjust so your feet will not slip in the game.
Again, you erode sanchez long pass play, you give the OFINZ the smell of blood to win.
LET GET READY TO RUMBLE!!!!!!!!!
Keep in mind the season schedule
After this game is the bye so if TT plays just this game, Henne gets two weeks to prepare for New Orleans and Gregg Williams the NO DC has to prepare for three kinds of offenses.
You are giving your rookie extra time to prepare and shocking your nemesis with an unexpected surprise wrinkle
Abandoned the Draft Sean Smith at #25 Bandwagon to Join the Draft Sean Smith at #61 Bandwagon and get Vontae Davis and Chris Clemons. Trio > me.
It definatly has to be an advantage on our side if we can give them a lot more to look at
and have to prepare for.
"I hope you know a lot more than you believe in"-Gram Parsons
Speaking only to this thought
wouldn’t it be better to simply practice it,w/o media present, and totally shock NO with it instead of unveiling it this week giving them time to “prepare” for it?
by firedanhenningnow on Oct 6, 2009 1:28 PM EDT up reply actions
Dont we already do that in some cases.
That is hold some of the practices in the bubble with the media closed to the press so they can install things without them being leaked to the media?
"I hope you know a lot more than you believe in"-Gram Parsons
But what does New Orleans prepare for?
They have one week to prepare for
A] Wildcat and variations
B] Conventional Offense with Henne (who has two weeks to study and prep)
C] Tyler Thigpen’s T-Bone Spread with new modifications from the bye week’s extra time
Miami, on the other hand, has two weeks to
A] focus on one of the offenses and hone it against the other team’s 33% preparation
B] work on two of the three (which two?) and use them both in the New Orleans game and make Rex Ryan
wonder on the rebound rematch in New York, which offense are they going to use?
Abandoned the Draft Sean Smith at #25 Bandwagon to Join the Draft Sean Smith at #61 Bandwagon and get Vontae Davis and Chris Clemons. Trio > me.
Your right! The more they have to think about the better.
Then you thow in the other wrinkles they dont see coming. Very hard to impossible to prepare for.
"I hope you know a lot more than you believe in"-Gram Parsons
The more formations you have,
the less practice our players get with each. That’s a huge downside…
Driver of the Make David Lee OC Bandwagon

Well we have our base offense and the Wildcat that they
have been practicing for months. I think thew will be fine.
"I hope you know a lot more than you believe in"-Gram Parsons
Sooo..you think we would've stomped NEs ass in that 1st game
like we did if they had had a week to “prepare” for the WC? That makes no sense to me considering you CAN’T “prepare” for something you don’t even know exists.
by firedanhenningnow on Oct 6, 2009 8:11 PM EDT up reply actions
Well to start with NE is great at preparing for just about anything.
This is the reason for throwing different looks at them from the same basic formations that have already worked for you.
"I hope you know a lot more than you believe in"-Gram Parsons
so if TT plays just this game, Henne gets two weeks
What was wrong with Henne’s play this week?
Behind terrible pass protection, he didn’t turn the ball over, coverted 3rd downs, led scoring drives. Not to mention, we WON.
Yea, thats a great idea. Lets pull our young QB that did everything that was asked of him. That’ll really build his confidence.
Henne gets two weeks to prepare for New Orleans
The Jets game is just as important as the NO game. And playing a QB that has learning the system fro over a year, is a far better option than playing a QB who hasn’t been on the team 2 weeks.
Lets not over think this. We win but running and defense, give me that. You can keep your trick plays.

Not saying Henne was bad at all. He did great!
But he is no wiley veteran with experience handling exotic blitzes and coverages.
A coordinator would be thought wise if he minimized Henne’s exposure to blitzes and minimum protections
because he is just a rookie. Why not trick the socks off the Jets’ defense and give Henne extra practice time to gel with the receivers?
I would love to see Henne brought in the Monday Night blowout over the Jets at the end where he is play-actioning off of handoffs while the Jets are frantically trying to stop the run. It would be great experience to get ready for the upcoming rematch in the Meadowlands without having him overwhelmed by blitzes the FIRST TIME AROUND.

Focus
If you split the Dolphins players into productivity areas you may get:
Pass function
Running function
Pocket protection function
Pass-rush function
Safety function
It is basically 5 areas. Focus to beat NYJ and what area pops up: Safety function.
so far the other 4 functions can be rated A+ with Henne and but the Safety function is a C-. Do not fix what is not broken, but rather rather fix, repair, reshape, compress, heat up, and coach details to create greatness on the weaklinks. Safety Function.
You erode the long ball on the Jets or Saints, and the Dolphins will smell blood and go for the kill. I don’t know how to say but the Dolphins look too good as they are now.
Just 10 seconds of safety “Day Dreaming” has us at 1-3. For you Safeties: Weak Up!!!!!!
Pocket protection is A+??

I'm a Pat fan too, a very big Pat fan BUT...
I think it has been painfully clear from the few opportunities that he has had, that he is not ready yet.
He is NOT a bust, but just needs time.
Tyler Thigpen, on the other hand, has had a year to sit (like Henne) two years ago.
Played against the Mangini-led New York Jets last year (I realize it is a totally different defense, but he has had experience scouting out some of the same players and watching film on them) and went
25-36-0 280 yards (69.6%) and 2 TDs [110.9 passer rating].
One big drawback is that he does not have chemistry with our receivers yet, but I’m not asking him to hit complex routes.
We are definitely NOT relying on his arm to beat the Jets, but to use the element of surprise and a few passes (see the receiver, throw the ball = playground football) to prevent the Jets from crowding the line and stopping the Wildcat. Since he is a talented runner, he can also provide a mobility and elusiveness that Henne doesn’t have against an aggressive defensive scheme.
The element of surprise folks takes risks and using a solid ground game (in the T-Bone spread, he is handing off to Ronnie and Ricky ALOT and just passing enough to keep the defense from overloading the run, and scrambling to avoid big losses when rushed…scramble and throw the ball away).
By the way, don’t forget: Bess and Camarillo are very QB-friendly.

Actually, Rex Ryan and the Jets are going to do everything they can to prevent Miami from...
getting in a groove.
When you pull off some tricky surprise stuff, you make your own groove.
Note that last year before Miami implemented the Wildcat, their ground game was stalling.
After they implemented the Wildcat, even when they ran the conventional run-offense, they did better.

I want to emphasize that I am NOT saying that Henne sucks and Thigpen is an all-star
But there are times when a hated rival comes to town on national TV that if you are creative and carefully use the resources that you have in unexpected ways, you can totally out-coach and demoralize an opponent.
I expect a bright future for Chad Henne. Tyler Thigpen may never amount to anything from here on out.
But I would love to remember that one time when the Jets came to town on MNF and were blown away by a scrub QB who was used in a special way at a special time and completely caught an arrogant Rex Ryan off guard.
They have Pat Plays already drawn up and were prepared to use them, but held back due to White’s inexperience and raw skills. Unleash them with Thigpen!
I’m sure it won’t be perfect and may very well turn out to be pathetic, but those are the risks that great coaches undertake to capture the element of surprise and use a uniquely talented player (with some moxy) to befuddle an opponent in an important game with the entire nation watching.

If last week Ofinz shows up on Sunday, can we still win?. Yes. Yes. and Yes. But the animal we need to skin is different.
The Dfinz has top adjust.
Open for comments: could a different formation be effetive, i.e, 3-3-2-4, against the 5-3-2-2 . This will strengthen our weaklink safeties.
Let the NYJ earn their ground yards if they can, but shut off the scoring spigett of the safeties.
All we need is to score one more point that the NYJ and we win.
Dolphins look so good now, I got a feeling! Hooooooooo Hoooo!!!!!!!!!!!!
LET’S GET READY TO RUMBLE !!!!!!!!!!
About the formation comments
I meant to say is it better to show a Dfinz formation of 3-4-4 rather that a 5-3-3.
My emotions shorted my math for a split second.
You comments are however, still welcome.
Sorry for misleading you,
I was requesting comments on a Defense ( Dfinz ) formation, not on our Ofense(Ofinz)
one.
So, bring it on, you got 11 pieces. it is 3-4-4 ; or is it 5-3-3 ; or 3-2-5 ; 2-5-4 .
Any reason why not 3-4-4.
my question is if we are subbing in a complete wildcat package (while taking henne out)
why not sub in pat white at one of the wr positions. It adds a different dimension (pass) that you must account for.
I believe in John Beck and that Cbdolphin is the man. I'll make you proud LCFF

yes. seriously.
screw the “but we promised him he could play quarterback”.
Let him do something to help the team win.
White ran the best 40-yard dash of any quarterback at the combine, notching times in the 4.48-4.54 range.

Thats why I have said over and over to try him at WR but I just always get
shot down with hes too small, hes too slow, ect…. I just want to find some use for the guy so I wont feel like we have wasted a 2nd round pick. We have done enough of that over the years.

I assume Ryan will attack the WC like he did last year seeing how it worked
and that is with at least 10 in the box therefore I would throw and/or run to the left,it’s ALWAYS open, out of the WC until they cried before I even attempted a run up the gut or to the right out of that formation. The jets have rushed over 60% of the time and I really think we can absolutely embarrass them with picks and quick slants.
Rex thinks like his daddy and Marino embarrassed Chicago when Buddy was DC there by spreading them out and making that awesome D cover WR’s and even though we dont have Dan I think it has more to do with scheme creating mismatches and I look for Hartline and Bess to have awesome games.
They will dare us to pass as would I in hopes Henne is either handcuffed or makes mistakes but they will do all they can to shut down the run so I think you make LBs cover WRs and TEs because I dont think they can..we will see.

We have to do something to get the Jets D off balance.
