Cameron Wake proved he's a beast...now what?

3 sacks, 4 tackles(2nd most on team), and a forced fumble against the Bills filling in for Joey PorterCameron Wake proved he's a beast...now what?

Joey is probably going to be back next week, especially since its a prime-time game.  So where does Wake go?

Does he split more reps with team captain Joey Porter? Does he take reps away from other team captain Jason Taylor who showed he still has gas in the tank with 2 sacks today?

Maybe work on some packages where all 3 are on the field at the same time? That would definitely add some pass rush... You could always take Gibril Wilsons spot out to make room for him, it's not like he's making any impact on the field.

Just kidding Gibril.

Yeah

Wake obviously has earned more playing time. He had some great moves on those sacks, and he had some key special teams tackles out there.

Backup both JT and Joey Porter

Keep in mind that Buffalo’s tackles are awful, but it isn’t going to hurt to have a fresh JT and a fresh Joey Porter.
Let him have ALOT of reps. He’s young.

Yeah, not to be difficult but he was playing against two backup tackles – the kind that barely even made the team. Not exactly tough competition.

well wake is a backup too

and those stats starter vs starter would be more than impressive

Fine, allow me to rephrase. He was technically playing against “2nd string” but the fact of the matter is the tackles the Bills were forced to play with yesterday shouldn’t even be considered NFL players. They are really that bad. If you still want to think Wake would have done that against real NFL tackles, you’re welcome to. Maybe he would have, I have no idea – just pointing out that I think I would have had a couple sacks against Trent Edwards being protected by Jonathan Scott (a Detroit Lions cast off) and Kirk Chambers (a Browns cast off).

I think the important thing to note is that he got 3

where JT only got two, but you are definitely right in pointing out the weakness of your O-Line as reasons for inflated numbers.

I dont care that he was playing the second stringers.

This is the NFL and you can find cases like this all over the league every week.

I guess my big question is why would someone come over here and try and convice us that there team sucks so bad? Very odd to say the least.

I’m not sure if you’re just trying to bait me but that is not even close to what I did. I said our backup tackles aren’t good – thank god our team isn’t composed solely of backup tackles. And as for the “it happens all over the league” argument – I’m not sure how that’s relevant. If a RB puts up great numbers against a bad run defense and terrible numbers against a good run defense wouldn’t you call him a bad running back, or mediocre at best anyway. I didn’t say Wake was bad, I didn’t say the Bills are bad, all I said was that he was playing against some not so great tackles so I’d wait until he beats a starter to anoint him the second coming of Joey Porter.

Everyone has injurys that hamper some part of there team throughout the year.

I didn’t say he played well or bad – I honestly don’t understand what your (Aleta) argument is. I also didn’t say that he had a bad day. The title of this article is “Cameron Wake PROVED…” and I’m just not sure he’s PROVEN anything with one good game against backup tackles.

If you really see a major flaw in that logic then so be it but it seems straightforward to me.

I can write a amarter sentences in spanish!! Hope u understand spanish, but guest not!

But if didnt get what i wrote, them let me rephrase!!
U said that Cameron didnt prove a thing! He got 3 sacks agains a bad Oline, how many sacks he needed to prove to u that he is good? 7 sacks, 11, 14 sacks?

I will see the Dolphins win a SUPER BOWL before i die(22 years and counting)

by Aleta on Oct 5, 2009 9:52 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I understand spanish. But anyway, I don’t think sacks against backups PROVES anything, that’s my point. Ok, maybe 14 sacks would prove something, but that’s pretty crazy. I think if anyone got 14 sacks in a single game I’d be willing to anoint them the next Bruce Smith! (I’m worried this is going to get me yelled at a lot… hah, I guess when your team is playing shitty you have to harp on the past)

Anyway, like I said before, I’m NOT saying Wake won’t be good – just that he hasn’t proven anything yet. I think that’s fair.

Replace Wilson with Culver...

I was thinking the same thing. And to think Renaldo Hill is having a great year in Denver so far…today he forced a fumble on Romo. I think Fins shoulda kept Hill.

by snorky on Oct 4, 2009 11:13 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Twin?

I’m thinking the same thing. When Culver is on the field he’s near the ball making a play. Wilson also gets near the ball, but he can’t tackle. And yes the Phins should of kept Hill. But, i guess they underrated him.

He had quite a game, cameron wake...

unfortunately, he/we only get to feast on the bills offensive line 2x/year. Other units will be better and I don’t think we can expect six sacks as a defense or 3 from wake every week.

Wake is a beast

but your right he won’t get those numbers every week. He could get close if porter was not around but b/c it would look bad to trade a captain i think we will just stick with what we have.

If we were to trade Porter who would be dumb enough to except him in a trade?

Porter is at the end of his career and i cant really see him as trade bait.

If there is a contender out there that is weat at the position or just feels like

they are a pass rusher away from getting to the next level might jump at it. Otherwise I think you are correct and no one is going to be interested given his age and size of contract.

He's a pass rusher....

That’s why. As an OLB, he can get to the QB. At ILB, his primary role is to make tackles, which he still needs to get better at..

JT was brought in to be a 3rd-down pass rusher. Only 2 more games until Roth comes back. By the end of the season, Wake and Roth should be our OLB’s.

by crossborderFISHingtrip on Oct 5, 2009 8:02 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

who said Roth is ready to come back? i havent seen that story anywhere

he can sit the rest of the season, the only thing he was decent at was stopping the run, and im pretty sure we are set at that.

by FishNFinz on Oct 5, 2009 9:24 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think if anybody is gonna be moved around

JT should go to ILB. I think he’s the only one that would be able to convert, and he’s definitely better at covering people than Crowder or Akin.

by Little Nicky 21 on Oct 5, 2009 1:51 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

do you still think he has the range to scrape all the way across, fight off blocks, and make tackles for a whole game?

i mean, i am thinking that his savvy let’s him beat those one on one blocks by the tackles, but he has lost a step.

-LCFF

by LeftCoastFinFan on Oct 5, 2009 1:05 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I agree

and I don’t think he should be there full time. Let me rephrase my comment lol.

He should move inside on passing downs. Take Crowder out and Akin out. Put the 3 CB’s (Smith, Allen, Davis) in, and JT, JP, and Wake at the LB’s. Essentially playing a 3-3-5. You can walk Bell up into the box, he’s just as good at stopping the run as Ayodele. JT can blitz from the middle or overload one side with either Porter or Wake, or he can drop in coverage, since IMO he’s our best bet as a cover LB.

Hopefully, if Roth comes back soon, we can package our OLB’s for run (Roth and Taylor) and pass (Porter and Wake, with JT in the middle).

by Little Nicky 21 on Oct 5, 2009 4:10 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

3-3-5

I like the idea. That would be a very tough pass defense to IMO. Wilson is the only other one I would swap out also. I hope he starts stepping it up. If not cut him or trade him. Package wilson and ginn to SF for Crabtree. They need safefy help. Plus i think Culver and Clemmons are better Safeties.

I think you play Wake vs the Jets as much as he played yesterday.

That way, we can see if it was a fluke, or he is the real deal. Obviously, he should have some decrease in stats next week because you can’t expect 3 sacks every game. After the Jets game with an equal amount of playing time, the coaches will have a better idea regarding his required playing time.

How sweet it would be, though, if he could translate his CFL numbers into the NFL.

and against a horrid offensive line.

That said, anyone who can get 3 sacks in one game, particularly a young player is someone who deserves a serious look and playing time.

I’d say you have the making of a nice 3-man rotation between JP, JT, and Wake at the S & W OLB spots.
