Interesting Ted Gimp Metric(s)
Seems we've been taking just a tiny little bit about Ted Ginn lately. No special reason of course... ;-)
Here are some interesting metrics on him and other wideouts:
This one is for passes thrown to 20 or more yards downfield to a receiver, look who is on top of the list?
- Ted Ginn, Dolphins: 13 targets, two catches (74 yards, one TD).
- Vincent Jackson, Chargers: 12 targets, six catches (254 yards, one TD).
- Donald Driver, Packers: 12 targets, five catches (156 yards, one TD).
- Mohamed Massaquoi, Browns: 12 targets, four catches (126 yards, no TDs).
- Steve Smith, Panthers: 12 targets, three catches (98 yards, zero TDs).
- Terrell Owens, Bills: 12 targets, two catches (82 yards, one TD).
And you can see real quickly what the problem is: 13 targets.........2 catches. Now deep passes are not nearly as high percentage, but Ginn has the worst success rate in this group, a measley 15.3%. The next closest is TO at 16.7% and we'd all agree TO is having a lousy year. Compare this to say, Vincent Jackson, 50% success rate or Donald Driver, 41.7% success rate.
This isn't necessarily a sign that the Fins are going bombs away ala the 07 NE offense with Brady-Moss. My guess is that while GInn has gotten the most targets of 20+ yards, there's probably very few other players being targeted 20+ yards downfiled on our offense this season - save for the occasional wildcat downfield pass.
Another area where Ginn shows up is in the number of times thrown to on third down in the fourth quarter.
- Steve Smith, Giants: seven targets, six catches.
- Ted Ginn, Dolphins: seven targets, four catches.
- Mohamed Massaquoi, Browns: seven targets, two catches.
- Bobby Wade, Chiefs: six targets, two catches.
- Wes Welker, Patriots: six targets, one catch.
In this case, Ginn has done a better job. Presumably though these are much shorter passes as they are taking place in 3rd down situations. This is another ominous sign though when Ginn's success rate on short passes is soooooo much higher than on long passes. So to add to the fine work done in an earlier fanpost about Ginn's YAC (in short, mediocre YAC metric) - when you are a one-dimensional speed guy with bad hands, ahem, you really have to make those deep shots work.

Those fourth quarter 3rd down catches
are very high pressure situations. That’s an interesting stat and what’s more interesting is that he’s outperforming Wes Welker… really he’s outperforming all but Steve Smith.

How many of these catches
resulted in a 1st down?

Well, Steve Smith is having a poor year by his own admission...
in large part thanks to Delhomme. Welker is a bit surprising as you generally think of him as a big time chain mover.
My point with this though is if the primary motive for playing Ginn is due to some perceived deep threat, then he’s doing a poor job of holding up his end of that bargain with the lowest success rate.
OR you could say that it makes perfect sense if he’s a decoy who is not really expected to make any real catches or plays. Not sure how many teams would be happy with a top 10 pick as a decoy but….

The key is HOW MANY DROPS!
The Wes Welker stats are interesting, but if you were a defensive coordinator v. the Patriots, who would you double cover on third down? Yes, that’s right Wes Welker. Even though Brady has been uncharacteristically skittish and off-target, I wonder how many of those 5 3rd down targets were DROPS.
More like ball batted away or off-target due to double team bracket.
Not very consoling when on a third down, Ginn bobbles a pass into the hands of a safety and it is returned for a touchdown OR three touchdown grabs of over 20 yards that were dropped by Ginn.
If your stat line should be Targeted 13 times, 5 catches, 154 yards and 4 TDs, but instead it is
13 targets, two catches (74 yards, one TD) just because you dropped the ball…

Welker has missed a number of games/minutes due to injuries

Delhomme takes a lot of blame
but not for missing Steve Smith of the Giants.

man that is one out of a thousand stats. welker has been hurt and with the blowout the pats put up, there weren’t many 3rd downs. what a stupid statement. ginn only outperforms welker in drops. jets are going to eat henne alive.

you aren't possibly even considering
that Ginn is in the same class as Welker are you? Hell, he isn’t even in the same building.

Uh...
Not sure who Mike is referring to but I sure as heck don’t think Gimp belongs on the same field as Welker!
We are talking light years difference:
Welker – tough as nails, good hands, gamer.
Gimp – um, he runs really really fast when other teams intercept passes that went right through his hands….

Well this is the kick in the a$$ Ginn needs
he knows the fans are upset and all the media bashing that he has seen and heard is going to hopefully motivate him he has shown improvement this season with his routes but for some reason he just cant make the clutch grabs(or as of late any grab) he really needs to be more agressive when trying to make a play over a corner he still has a few more games to prove himself but even sowho knows if he will be a phin come next season

Ginns speed truly amazes me!
He doesn’t even make the Defender turn his hips before he makes his move and yet he can still motor by him.He won’t jump up and fight for the ball and if it hits him in his hands he’s in trouble but the boys got the jets.
IF he could catch with his hands, like all the good receivers do,and IF he actually knew how to drive the Defender until he turned his hips before making his move he would be amazing but he doesn’t do any of those crucial things and it’s a shame because he could be special..just our luck.
