Dolphins got screwed: The visual evidence

I rarely ever gripe about refs and calls going one way or the other because, in the grand scheme of things, bad calls that both help the Dolphins and hurt the Dolphins probably even out over the course of a season.  For that reason, I lay off the referees - for the most part.

But then you have calls that change games.  And that's exactly what I want to spend a moment highlighting.  Last week against the Saints, the Dolphins were on the short end of a couple of "questionable" calls by the refs.  But one of the biggest plays of the game went against the Dolphins - and had a huge impact on the rest of the game.

Yes - I'm talking about Darren Sharper's "pick six" early in the third quarter.  And yes, there's a reason I'm using quotation marks.  As it turns out, it's pretty clear that the play should not have resulted in a touchdown for New Orleans.

Let's set the scene.

The Dolphins come out from halftime leading 24-10.  But on the third play from scrimmage in the second half, Chad Henne threw a pass that should have been caught by Ted Ginn - but we won't go there.  Instead, it was bobbled by Ginn and intercepted by Darren Sharper, who returned it 42 yards for a touchdown.  Suddenly, it was only a seven point lead.

But it shouldn't have been.  Thanks to Sports Illustrated's terrific photographers (Simon Bruty, in particular, got this shot), we have visual evidence that Sharper did fumble the ball before crossing the goal line.  The ball then went out of bounds in the endzone, which should have resulted in a touchback in favor of the Dolphins and a 1st down at the 20 yard line.

The referees even reviewed the play following a challenge from Tony Sparano - but did not overrule the call on the field.

The visual evidence is below.

Star-divide

As you can clearly see, Sharper did lose control of the football about a yard shy of the goal line.

Finssaints1_medium

The worst part of this might be the fact that the line judge is staring DIRECTLY AT THE PLAY.  He couldn't have possibly had a better view of the fumble.  How does this not get ruled properly?

These are the kinds of plays that could be the difference between a playoff appearance and a season ending prematurely.  And I know that there were a number of other reasons that the Dolphins lost that game last weekend.  But it's frustrating to think of "what might have been" if the referees had only gotten the call correct on the field.

This also raises another question.  Why the hell are there no cameras right on the goal line of each endzone?  Wasn't the point of instant replay to get the calls correct?  It wouldn't be difficult at all to have two cameras at the front corners of each endzone where the goal line meets the sideline to get these kinds of calls correct.

Instead, we are all left to ponder what might have been.

Holy SH#T! I called this with my friends here at work.

I re-watched the entire game on Tuesday night in addittion to this the encroachment call on JT was bull too. Anyway what we had to look at during the game. The one angle clearly shows the balls out but you can’t see the goaline. With that said at the other angle you can see the goal ine and if you line up the defenders foot withwhen the balls out you can see he’s not through the goal line. What makes it even worse is I’m not a trained proffessional and have all the tools they have and I picked this out. Come on these Refs need to be disciplined somhow when mistakes are made like this. Not to mention he’s right there. Lastly do you all realize who made that play. I know he missed the catch, but he at least got off his arse and tried to save the pick six which we clearly know he has done now.

Exactly,

had that call been made correct Ginn would not have received near the flack he has this week.

What kills me th emost about this call is the fact that earlier in the game they overturned Bess's drop which he clearly had the ball in his hand. Yes, it was on it's way out but doesn't there have to be idisputible evidence to overturn.

So why was the call overturned. Then on the Sharper pick six the one shot shows the ball out, which means the ball had to be on it’s way out sometime during the shuffle before reaching the goaline. So it should’ve been overturned as he did earlier against the Bess fumble. INCONSISTENCY! Just as player they need to be held accountable. Then there talking about possibly having refs where helmets for protection. So you know the calls are going to get even more screwed up becasue of the obstruction of the field of view from the helmet.

I wouldn't put him at safety, more like goal-line goalie to use his 4.29 speed...

to race up to a player about to score and knock the ball out of his hands just before he crosses the goal-line for a touchback.
Of course the refs would just rule it a touchdown anyway and uphold it using the replay and we would lose a timeout again.

I almost don’t blame Teddy, he’s a frail little guy playing with the big boys. We shouldn’t blame him for Cam Cameron being a deuschbag drafter – when the Fins drafted him not one other team even had him on their 1st round board.

Interesting

When I watched the game I definetly thought he fumbled before crossing the plane but I thought maybe they didn’t rule it a fumble because Ted ginn caused it and he was out of bounds but they came back in to chase sharper and cause the fumble. But I don’t know if that has anything to do with it.

Not that,

I’m talking about Ginn going out of bounds and then returning to cause the fumble. If that were the reason they called it a TD, then there would have been a flag on Ginn.

I think you guys are confusing this with punt returns.

If a punt return defender goes out of bounds on his own, he cannot be the first defender to touch the ball. If he’s pushed/forced out, he must get in bounds first before he can recover the ball.

For an offensive play...

The player must establish himself inbounds first, before he can be eligible to catch or recover the ball. As for defensive players, which Ginn technically was during the INT, they only have to establish themselves inbounds if they are attempting to recover a loose ball. Since he was only stripping the ball from another player, there was no penalty. Really the only time you’ll see a penalty flag thrown for this scenario, is when a gunner on a punt return team runs out of bounds to avoid blockers, then inbounds and is the first to touch the ball. That’s why that penalty exists. If a player fails to establish himself inbounds, then touches the ball, other than on a punt. It’s ruled a dead ball/incomplete whatever the situation may be.

What Comes Around...

Let’s not forget that the catch that was really NOT a catch by Bess on their first drive was a ruling that kept the drive going and went the Dolphins way. It was plainly not a catch on replay….so things tend to even out…

by oceantracks on Oct 29, 2009 9:27 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Yes, they do tend to even out.

And even though they sometimes don’t, mistakes by players AND officials are a part of the game and you have to overcome them…and to their credit, the Dolphins nearly pulled it off (down 6 and driving for a TD at the end of the game).
BUT this is a HUGE turnaround:
Pick 6 for a TD versus touchback out of the endzone and MAINTAINING possession AND they lost a timeout on the challenge which they could have used to score the game winning TD on the last drive to overcome the bad officiating.
NOTE: With three timeouts, do you think Camarillo foolishly tries a shovel pass out of bounds, or instead cuts it back inside to pick up more yards since yards are more important with 3 timeouts.

By the way, you HAVE to admit that a play that extends a drive...

does not cancel out a phantom touchdown that should have allowed the Fins to maintain possession.
IF it is a bad call where the Saints still have possession on the 1 yard line, okay.
But this should have been a touchback and Miami still has the ball up 24 -10

by luvs2drnk on Oct 29, 2009 11:22 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Lets not forget the play that happened before the half.

The call by the official of a touchdown on Colstons catch, though eventually overturned, stopped the clock for the Saints. Without that missed call there is no way Sparano calls timeout and no way the Saints get another play off. So in the course of under a minute of gametime 2 blown calls give the saints 14 points and cut our lead from 21 to 7. Not to mention kills all of our momentum.

refs

The ref should of been able to make the call. They are afraid fo making the tough call nowadays because they can just go back and rely on instant replay. Not sure why everyone in america knew that should of been called a TD but yet they overrule it.

When Gibril Wilson saved B. Edwards from the TD against the Jets and the refs said Wilson stopped Edwards before the goalline, that was a lot more questionable. I would of understood if that wasn’t overruled.

I’m tired of refs never being held accountable for their mistakes… but if a player its someone to hard they get fined. BS

And maybe it’s just me, but it seems like we are constantly getting rooked by the officiating at home. I know bad calls are a part of the game, but this is getting egregious.

I was listening to NFL satellite radio this morning and heard Randy Cross (someone I cannot stand — I’ve never heard someone take so much pride in the fact they spent most of their career getting their ass touched by Joe Montana) dress down a Dolphins fan calling in because “bad calls are just excuses when you lose. No one complains when they win.” Uh, no, that’s bullshit. The phantom pass interference call on Will Allen really could have cost us against the Jets, and I ranted all week about it, even though we won. If the call sucks, most fans will say something.

Refs did Fins more favors than not

The fins got away with at least 5 holds throughout the game that I saw (im sure there was more), including a major colloring on Ricky Williams long TD run. None of them were called by the refs.

I dont think a single hold was called all game.

Then theres the mysterious malfunction of the replay equipment giving you another chance to score, and at least 3 pass intereference no-calls the phins got away with crawling up the back of saints WRs and grabbing around the waist.

The zebras may have blown that call for you, but if they called a perfect game, you are mush worse off.

by BBoucher on Oct 29, 2009 10:47 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I disagree...

there is NO holding call or pass-interference call that can be worse since points are not erroneously given to the one team instead of possession of the ball again. Worse case scenario, Fins just have to punt. Saints still have to score (which they did easily, but they still have to get a touchdown instead of a FG which they were unable to do at the end of the game).

I do believe the 1st call on Bess was wrong.. it should not have been a catch.. but that was the only other questionable call that the fins were awarded. This was a game changer. Hey, maybe that's what Ted Ginn was born to do BE AN NFL REFEREE

He avoids contact, so he would never get in the way of the play.
If a receiver drops a ball or bobbles it out of bounds, he would make the correct call, because he knows what that looks like up close and personal.
If the receiver makes the catch, he would be like, hey, I’ve never seen that before, I’ve got to make the right call.
Imagine on a big pass down the field to some hot-shot receiver and the referee RUNS BY the receiver to make the TD call in the endzone.

I agree

The NFL should place cameras in strategic spots, so you can clearly analyze any questionable plays. But, if they did that, then Goodell wouldn’t be able to help his certain teams win…

I think refs have too much leeway anyhow, and the fact that coaches can’t criticize calls in ignorant!

I am not going to sit here and say that we didn’t get breaks, etc… Because the review wasn’t working at the first of the game, and that helped us out. The bottom line is our team folded, and the NO offense is scary good, so that combo didn’t exactly help…

by KnoxVegas on Oct 29, 2009 10:48 AM EDT via mobile reply actions   0 recs

How about the alternative, simple, practical hypothesis?

Ted Ginn makes the catch – which is one a #2/3 receiver in this league is expected to make without a lot of fanfare (it would not have been a ‘great grab’ or ‘highlight reel’ play), much less a top 10 draft pick and guy billed as a #1 receiver by some.

Yeah Matty mentioned Ted GImp should have caught it. And yeah, perhaps a bad call but it should never have come to that. You make the plays you are expected to make (and catches!!!) and the refs have no effect on the outcome.

Nor does this play change how poorly we played/schemed in the 2nd half.

I see this jets game as another make/break game. Dropping to 2-5 plus a division loss I think is bye bye playoffs…

That’s why I mentioned the refs in my 5 reasons post because of this call. It was also my turning point in the game. The replays the announcers were showing on TV were the same ones the replay officials were looking at, and it clearly showed Sharper losing the ball before the goalline.

the effing reffing has been awful lately, and was exceptionally bad in this game. Starting with that first lame-ass “we can’t figure out how to work the replay equipment” challenge.

Interesting how it’s only the media hyped teams that get the 7 point calls.

This really hurts to see

I told my friend that it was a fumble when it happened, and I really thought it was. Now it’s proven.

Regardless, there are simply too many other things we did wrong in that game to worry too much about this, but it is impossible not to think “what if”.

You can't sit on a lead and run a few plays into the line and just kill the clock. You've got to throw the ball over the goddamn plate and give the other man his chance. That's why baseball is the greatest game of them all.

But it's my belief that this play is what caused that horrible play calling.

When the Saints cut the lead to 7, Dan Henning went into panic mode and completely ditched the running game, and our fate was sealed.

By the angle of the picture,

I think the ref was more worried about getting his ass run over than making the right call. But anyhow the rules of the game state that there has to be undisputable evidence to overturn the call and there wasnt. Simply put. But with the way we played in the second half and play calling ect…, as much as I hate to say it we deserved to lose this game. We should have stuck with the same gameplan as the 1st half and pounded the ball down their throats and hid our defensive schemes. Hopefully, Sparano and co. learn from this game and stick with whats working instead of trying to plan against adjustments the other team may be making during halftime. Thats ok, we are going to bounce back and spank Sanchez and the Jests this week.

They see the same thing we see. They didnt have sports illustrateds pic to overturn the call. The idiot line judge should have seen it. Thats what he gets paid for.

But getting back to the review……I saw pretty convincing evdience that the ball was clearly flying in front of him before he reached the endzone. You could see a clear picture of the ball, free from anyone’s possession, just as Sharper crossed the goalline. Which obviously means it had to come out of his hands before he crossed the goalline.

Any team that chokes the way we did in the second half

with that big of a lead and loses the game, deserves to lose the game. Even if they are my beloved Fins. Hopefully they will learn something from this loss and it wont happen again. Also if Bess doesnt fumble the ball at the end of the 1st half in FG range we go into halftime with a 24 -28 point lead instead of being up by only 14 going into the half. I think the Bess fumble at the end of the half is what caused the momentum change, which in turn caused the coaches to change the plan of attack and the 2nd half collapse. Just my opinion tho.

by Wade on Oct 29, 2009 9:51 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

How come no one is mentioning Bess's fumble?

The replay on bess’s fumble in the first half clearly showed his knee was down before the ball came out. The Ref’s reviewed it and still made the wrong decision. There was no conclusive evidence. If we would’ve never lost the fumble we couldve gone up 31-3 in the first half. The Saints and Jets games has got to be some of the worst officiating I’ve ever seen. How can they not make the right calls with all the cameras and reviewing technology they have?

Dolphins and Ginn

will be on top of the AFC-East on 11-16-09. We are playing too good, and each game that goes by we improve more and more as more scoring weapons become alive.
I can say it again, the Saints game was much closer than the 46-34. Sparanno red glags should have won.
Matti proves Dolphins are a better team than the Saints given correct officiating.
If Dolphins meet with Saints one more time this season, Dolphins win. Officials must get it wright at least 1 out of 2.
You can easly see that Saints could not score with conviction on the Dolphins. Almost three scores were very questionable and called by Sparanno with red flags. That is more than 12 points. Dolphins almost beat 2 teams: Saints and Referees.

Question: why when you jump to catch a pass in the end zone and when you come down and touch the white line it is ruled out of bounds; but, when you run it into the end zone and jump to cross the goal line and land out of bounds it’s called a touchdown ?
I think if you land out, you should be called out, no matter where, end zone or 50 yard line. Enough of the scoring with your hand when your body lands three off the field in after a jump.

Let’s go Dolphins!!!

A receiver doesn't have to bring the ball all the way to the ground.

He just has to get both feet down in bounds. The ball can be up over his head.

If you’re talking about when a receiver dives for the corner of the end zone, he doesn’t have to get it to the ground there either. In that case it follows the same rule as a runner, the ball just has to break the plane.

"Why don't you put that in a memo and entitle it 'Shit I Already Know'!" - Sarge from Red vs. Blue

A wr must have control all the way to the ground no matter if his feet are in the endzone or even in play. When all a runner has to do is break the plane of the goaline it doesn't matter if the ball comes loose as long as he breaks the plane.

When this happens it’s ruled a TD and the play is dead at that time. If a receiver catches the ball and has control going down but the ball pops out when he hits. If i’m not mistaken it’s incomplete. This makes no sense at all. Please correct me if I’m mistaken.

by D0lphins4Life on Oct 29, 2009 9:36 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

You're right, but there is a difference.

When a receiver hits the ground and loses the ball he failed to maintain possession and it’s ruled an incomplete pass because it’s ruled the receiver never had full possession of the ball. When a runner is running, he already has established complete control of the ball, and the ground cannot cause a fumble. Now if a receiver catches a ball on the 3 yd line and then dives into the endzone and loses the ball when he hits it’s also a TD.

Finally, a post about this!

Not that it changes anything but this is so very true..and not just this call but the unfortunate play before the half that ended in points…forget that people are saying it should have been 3 …it should have been NONE!
If the refs made the correct call right off the bat and DIDN"T call it at TD then New Orleans would never had gotten up to the line in time to do anything or setup for a FG! So that’s a HUGE TD before the half that swings everything the other way… yes, it got reviewed and was ruled correct but that stop gave them the time they needed to get a FG ..or in the case, a TD…after that lovely timeout.

Now as for the PICK-6 that was CLEARLY a FUMBLE OUT OF THE ENDZONE and should have been a TOUCHBACK for the Fins…I’m flaberghasted! I don’t know what to say.. I honestly thought that during the challenge and replays that the ref’s would get it right and call it correctly.. I was even calming down my viewing buddies and saying..we’re okay, it’s not a TD, the refs have got to get this right and I truely believed they would!..but they did not and I was blown away!

Not to blame the WHOLE game on the refs but those were TWO DIRECT CALLS that actually resulted in 14 points as a DIRECT result of the mixups! 14 points! Usually bad calls are the P.I. calls that give them 40 yards or the crappy 5 yard holding/auto first downs…but these two meant TD’s..and two of them.. I really believe that we would have won this game… a fairly handely had both of these gone the way they should have… and that hurts the most..
but we can’t change the past.. just got to move on.. and yes, we were 2-4 last year and made an incredible run.. lets hope for that again this year

I would like to give credit ti Tedd Ginn for his hassle to create the goal line fumble.
After falling on his back, Teddy got up and went after Sharpe and cought him 3 yards befor ethe goal line to redeem himself. Too fast to see it, but true. Yes my friend, it was Ginn #19 slapping the ball for a touch back. Too bad, Ginn was too fast for the croosed eyed refs to call it right.

Yes I noticed it too. Of course there's a but and here it comes. If you watch the replay. First off props on him for making back to make the strip, but

if you notice he has a chance to get there earlier. He p*ssy footed for a little bit and I guess a light bulb when off in his head and realize either I can make a play or I better make a play. Too make a long story short. He could’ve gotten there even sooner, which could’ve made it easier for the refs and our hearts as well.

Officials Blew it!

Besides this one play, very likely costing us that game, I really didn’t understand the Bess fumble at the end of the first half. Bess’ knee was clearly down. He clearly had possession, and yes, a second later the ball was out….but I don’t believe in this crap that the “ball was coming out” equals a fumble. He HAD the ball, yes maybe it was slipping…I would contend that “slipping” and “slipped” are two different things. Am I splitting hairs? I don’t think I am, I think the referees were. That bad call cost us 7 points, and likely at least 10, possibly 14 because I believe we were almost in field goal range. Couple that with the bad call the article and picture clearly shows, and the Dolphins got totally screwed out of that game, and possibly out of the play off picture. End of Story

If a player is thinking about, maybe losing the ball when he is hit, would they call it a fumble? That’s the difference between “slipping and slipped”.

Fumble

This and the Devon Bess I think, are BS. I still don’t understand why it was called a fumble when his knee was down. I get that the ball was ‘moving’, but I’ve seen many calls that show the ball move a hell of a lot more then that and get called down. But that alone wasn’t what cost the Dolphins the game. Bad play calling and poor play mattered way more.

Hey Matty -

Don’t forget about that “touchdown” that Brees made by sticking the ball “over” the line when it lasted all of 2 seconds before he himself pulled back before Crowder knocked him back even more. That pissed me off. That was not a touchdown. That was two scores against us for 14 – less that from 46 = 32 and WE WOULD HAVE WON!!!!

I would agree that it's a TD.

But I would also like to see a rule change that states; “In order to score a TD. A player must either place the ball/ two feet inside the endzone area in order for a score to count.” And by place inside the endzone area, I’m talking about the entire football must cross the plane. I’m not a big fan of the breaking the plane rule, or the infinite goal line/pylon rule.

The Officiating was bad period.

I dont know how many times i saw the officials have five minute conversations before making a call this game. Whether right or wrong, you see a play and make a call. The ref 40 yards down the field should not have anything to do with the play. A little off topic but a recurring theme in Dolphin games this season.

by 7th Round Pick on Oct 29, 2009 10:29 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

last I checked the Saints won by two touchdowns, not 1

And what about that “faulty replay machine” that led to continuing a drive that ended, but pinned the Saints at their own five, where Brees threw an interception and the Dolphins scored a touchdown. Or how about the 68 yard touchdown by Ricky Williams where the Dolphins center, Jake Grove, is BLATANTLY holding Jonathan Vilma. Calls go both ways throughout the course of a game. The Dolphins didn’t do anything in the 2nd half to win. Darren Sharper caught the good end of a bad call, just like Ricky Williams and Devon Bess.

saints won by 12 points

Without bess’s fake fumble. score 24-3 to 31-3 at half. without colstons fake call touchdown…5 seconds off clock. 24-3 half. without sharpers fake touchdown… dolphins ball, saints no score. Thats at least 14 points saints dont score….Dolphins win.

The difference between the bs calls is that 2 of the3 i just mentioned were on a td play. Your supposed holding is bs. Thank you for Rickys all time longest run and tie for most td in a game. Ricky is back to being a beast.

The ref watching this play should be fired. Either the games are being fixed or this guy is just to old to be Reffering a game.

Visual Evidence???

That image proves nothing. Where is the next frame … where the ball crosses the goal line? Did Sharper regain control? All he needed to do was have a hand on it as he crossed the plane. Where was this angle for the review? Was the video machine broken again?

Also, anyone thinking the Colston Touchdown should have or would have been called down at the one WITHOUT REVIEW is just making up excuses. The Dolphins had the lead and there was 29 minutes of football left. They just didn’t have 29 minutes of football left in them.
