Pat White's New Job
It just dawned on me on how we can truly use Pat White.
As our new place holder for the field goal unit!!!
Alright, I know some of you are thinking, "Has he lost his damn mind!!". I assure you that I have not, nor am I, as the name implies, drunk. I truly think this is something they should look into for two reasons:
1. As soon as a defense sees him out there holding they'll be mindful of a possible fake. Which will in turn, lessen the pressure put on blocking the kick. This will also allow DC$ sightly more time to insure more accurate kicks Yes, I know hius nickname is DC$ for a reason, but any kicker would appreciate an extra second or two and not feel they have to rush a kick.
2. His skill set is perfect executing the fake FG. He can run and he has a strong arm. His speed allows him to get to the outside. His strong arm allows him to throw a quick pass to a TE on an out or post route before a defender can recover from the fake.
But for this to become truly effective, Pat White must learn to become a reliable place holder. Basically meaning, if we decide to kick, he can effectively catch the snap and place the ball for a good kick. We would also have to sell it, so that teams truly believe he is our new place holder. The first game that he takes over those duties, I wouldn't run a single fake. That way teams might disregard it as a simple personnel change. I would even let him just hold for two games, if the games were going in our favor. Then, just when teams are lulled into thinking only about the kick, you spring it on them. After that, it could be used at any given time, even on extra points.

If I'm not mistaken that role is usually reserved for a quarterback anyway.

Most teams have changed over to the punter becoming the place holder.

exactly, risking the quarterback's hands was just stupid
by MauMontaV5 on Oct 21, 2009 8:09 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I don't think that was the reasoning behind it.
How many back up QBs have been injured while being the holder?
I think it had more to do with keeping the back up focused on the game and the offense, instead of his special team duties. But I think we all know Pat White isn’t really our back up QB, so using him in this fashion won’t distract him.
by luvs2drnk on Oct 21, 2009 8:18 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
ok, plus, the punter the kicker and the holder are always walking around
practice like they were glued to each other. I saw that on one spring training practice I went to and it was hilarious.

Good idea. By the way, all this DC$ thing is total bull.
I can’t recall him making a long kick. And when we need him to make a long kick the coaching staff prefers to punt or go for it on fourth down because they don’t trust him on long range.
He is really good and all but nothing else.
Jay Feeley has been 100 times better for New York.
This is the same thing that happened with Pennington for lots of people. Accurate and perfect in the short and medium range but can’t do the long stuff.
by MauMontaV5 on Oct 21, 2009 8:07 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I talked about that when they brought Conner Barth in.
I thought they were looking for someone with a stronger leg.
Dan Carpenter has only kicked one FG over 50 yards, granted he made it, but I honestly think the coaching staff doesn’t have too much confidence in his ability to make long FGs.
But this is what makes my proposal that much more interesting, especially when we’re faced with 45+ yd FGs.
by luvs2drnk on Oct 21, 2009 8:12 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah good point, it could work - not rocket science- but as you say, first he'd have to run
the play like anybody else and after a couple of games unleash him. But sure, we’ve got nothing to loose.

I think they did something like that in Philly with Randal Cunningham back in the day.

disagree about DC$
He’s a career 85% FG kicker – that’s “money” if you ask me.
Sebastien Janikowski has a strong leg – and he’s only a 78% accurate kicker. And in his first two seasons, he only connected on 75% of his FGs.
So you can have your “strong-legged” kicker – I want the guy who never misses under 40 and is still VERY reliable from 40-45.
by Matty I on Oct 21, 2009 8:38 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Sure, but he is still not Nate Kaeding by any stretch of the imagination
so to me “$” seems a bit over the top
by MauMontaV5 on Oct 21, 2009 8:42 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
And actually, in 2008 he hit 9 out of 13 from 40-49 yards. Thats 69%
I wouldn’t exactly call that “money”
by MauMontaV5 on Oct 21, 2009 9:04 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
That is better than league average
League average runs about 53%. But that is substantially misleading. Some of the kickers kicked a bunch of 40-43 yard FGs while others were missing 48 and 49 yarders.
by Vanman_FishFan13 on Oct 22, 2009 9:45 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
And he still has tons of time to get even better.
"I hope you know a lot more than you believe in"-Gram Parsons
by texascowpunk on Oct 21, 2009 8:46 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
The only problem I have with that argument Matty
Is calling him a career 85% kicker, as if he had at least 5 or 6 years of experience to go off of. Don’t get me wrong, I like DC$, but I do wish he had a stronger leg. It not only benefits you on long FGs, but in kickoffs as well. We forget how much we loved Mare and his league leading touchbacks.
by luvs2drnk on Oct 21, 2009 9:15 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I think you are over-rating Feeley
Feeley makes his living hitting chippies, lots of them, especially since the Jets have trouble in the red zone.
So did Miami when Cam was here.
He missed a key attempt in the Buffalo game that could have been the margin for victory in a close game.
The last attempt in OT? that was blocked was not his fault, but it was a long one over 50 yards that he didn’t get a chance to make.

last year Feeley was better than Carpenter, then Carpenter is overrated.
by MauMontaV5 on Oct 21, 2009 9:05 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
The only thing I have against Feeley,
Is I blame him for the loss to the Texans two years ago. We had a chance to kick a 55 yd FG to win the game, but chose to punt instead. Texans get into the same distance FG, and their kicker kicks the 55yd FG to win.

by MauMontaV5 on Oct 21, 2009 9:13 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Not if the kicker you have has absolutely no chance of making a 55yd FG.
Which is why they chose to punt. If we still had Mare as our kicker, they would of let him try it.

I stopped playing All Madden after '08
It wasn’t that I couldn’t win, but every score was like 70-63. All the harder level did was make, computer RBs impossible to tackle, every computer QB threw for 80% comp and 400 yards, every kicker was 100% from 55yds, and running the ball is impossible between the tackles. Now I use the My Skill level that adjusts the AI to how I play.

I said this 2 weeks ago. Maybe 3 now..
We have to find SOMETHING for Pat White to do seeing we wasted a 2nd round pick on him. He is not going to be our future QB so move him to RB or WR in the WC formation.. he was a WR and a RB in the past.. USE him. Letting him sit there and do nothing and handing off one or 2 plays a game is pathetic.. plus he always looks ike hes about to just stop dead and stand still and wait for the headlights to pass by. I stil cannot believe that he was in on that 3rd down play last game. I just cannot believe that Sparano would even think of attempting that.. sure it worked.. this time but it easily coulda gone the other way and he coulda fumbled the snap.. or whatnot.. he is not ready to be out on the field as QB at all in my mind. Put him in the game as a rb or wr so he gets used to the speed of the game then once he is more comfortable then see what he can do as QB or something.
