Dolphins release Shawn Murphy, sign Lydon Murtha

In a bit of a surprise, the Dolphins have released guard Shawn Murphy and signed rookie tackle Lydon Murtha off of Detroit's practice squad. Murtha was a 7th round pick by the Lions back in April.

I guess this shows faith in Donald Thomas - but more importantly in Nate Garner as a top backup guard.

i like it.

i had high hopes for Murphy (4th rounder?), but i like the fact that the Dolphin Triad is not afraid to make a move like this; cutting a guy that they picked even though it could draw criticism.

Husker used to talk about this guy. He was the best thing about that Nebraka line.

Glad we picked him up. It’s too bad about Shawn Murphy, though. I was always a fan of his father Dale, so I was hoping for the best for him. Oh well. I think Murtha’s a definite improvement for sheer size alone.

He is a little on the short side at 6’0. He weighs 310. 37 reps on the bench. High shool wrestler and state champ. By the way I thought highly of Murtha. He’s a 3-4 NT.

Murtha was ranked as the nation’s No. 1 offensive tackle prospect by ESPN recruiting analyst Tom Lemming. Prototypical height for right tackle spot. 6’7" 315lb. Matches Longs height/weight almost exactly. Played right tackle at Nebraska. Big, smart and athletic.
