Bye Week Prediction Time

Well we don't have a Dolphins game to watch on Sunday.  But I still have my "locks" for week six that I need to post.  And for the first time this year, I actually had a winning week last week, going 2-1 with my "locks."  Of course, I'm still under .500 for the year - which is unacceptable.

Before I get to the picks, let's just touch on the division.  Unfortunately, both the Patriots and Jets should win their games this week.  The Pats host the winless Titans while the Jets host the Bills.  We could hope against hope that at least one of these two get knocked off.  But I just don't see it.

So let's get to my "locks" - which have been anything but locks so far this year.  And I'll throw in a bonus pick since it is the bye week.

My Week 6 Locks
Vikings -2.5 over Ravens - The Ravens can be run on - as shown by the Bengals last week.  And I think Minny's offense will be too much for Baltimore.
Saints -2.5 over Giants - I've been very impressed with the Saint defense this year.  I think they'll slow NY's rushing attack and Drew Brees will make enough plays to pull of the win in week 6's best game.
Cardinals +2.5 over Seahawks - Seattle was impressive last week.  But the Cardinals played well against Houston last week and I think that Arizona will put up some points against Seattle' defense - a unit that has over-achieved so far this year.
Eagles -13.5 over Raiders - I usually don't like laying this many points on a team traveling from the east coast to the west coast.  But the Raiders are terrible and the Eagles are beginning to hit their stride.

Last Week: 2-1
Season: 5-7

Inside the Numbers: Strength of Schedule

Hi Matty – Sorry to change the subject but I wanted to share some numbers I ran today. I really think the offseason “Strength of Schedule” rankings are bogus and really do not mean anything.

Here’s what I found:

Teams we play based on their last years records, combined w-l and win percentage:
152-104 .59 percent Toughest in the NFL

Teams we have played in the 1st 5 weeks, combined w-l and win percentage:
15-9 .63 percent Toughest part of our schedule (excluding Buffalo, if you consider only Atl, Indy, Jets and SD records, a whopping .74 percent; harder than the next 3 @ .71percent)

Teams remaining after bye, combined w-l and win percentage:
22-31 .41 percent Two 0-5 teams, one 1-4 team, one 1-3 team, two 2-3 teams, NE twice 3-2, Jets 3-2, Pitt 3-2 and 4-0 NO

Conclusion:
1) Teams change alot in the off season so that statistic is irrelevant. Probably need to run a final number after all games are complete to really know the relevance.
2) Even with that tough early 5 game schedule, came out of it 2-0 in the division and found a QB for the remaining schedule.
     3) Best is yet to come for Miami! With a .41% SOS remaining and if our defense especially the secondary gels, looks like we could be something to reckon with.

Thanks for that! Good stuff there!

Thats exactly why I kept saying in the preseason that you can not judge how difficult the following season will be based on teams record from the previous year. I still think of all the stats and numbers that get thrown out there that has got to be the worst and most meaningless.

While I agree with you that numbers change significantly throughout the year,

it is still a decent indicator of strength of schedule. Yeah, a couple of the teams we thought were going to be tough aren’t (Panthers, Tennessee), and a couple we thought were going to be mediocre (Saints, Jets) are stellar. So, can you honestly look at our schedule even now and say that it is not tough? No, you can’t. We have The Jets again, New England twice, The Saints, and Buffalo at home late in the season. Oh yeah, and The Steelers. Our schedule last year was projected as the easiest schedule in the NFL, you can’t tell me it wasn’t easy just like you can’t say this year’s schedule isn’t tough.

If anything is misleading, it’s running Win/Loss percentages after Week 5. There is a huge amount of variance in that. Miami looks like a weak team with our 2-3 record, but it doesn’t factor in that we played good teams and had some close losses. Do you think an opposing coach says “oh Miami is only 2-3, we only need to game plan half as much.” Nope.

Giants over Saints- Eli is on fire and is no Mark Sanchez. The jest defense stopped Brees and I believe the Giants have a better defense so they might be able to do so as well.

Seahaws over Cardinals- The cardinals are still playing with no fire, they were one bad throw away from blowing last week’s game. Seattle is really good at winning the possession and turnover battle with such an educated and efficient quarterback and a defense that has shut out 2 teams already in the season.

Just my educated guess. Should make for good fun after the weekend

I think your right on the Giants over the Saints.

I actually hope that the Saints do win. I dont want to have to play them following there first loss. Not good to have to play that offense when they are pissed off!

Problem...

Im fighting this hard….business over pleasure kinda..

Jets are gonna KILL BUFFALO. its such a lock. Jets are pissed…Bills are falling apart.

Can I EVER LAY MONEY ON THE JETS? even though i want them to lose?

Some predicitons…

Jets 37 Bills 13

Giants 27 Saints 24

Vikes 20 Ravens 19

Eagles 44 Raiders 17

Fantasy help…

Pick 3

Westbrook, Slaton, Jones-Drew, P.Thomas, Moreno, Mendanhall….

Im stuck. I think Westbrook is bout to lose a lot of value.

k

MJD against that Rams defense

I’d go with Westbrook against the Raiders defense. DId you see what happened to them in NY. Got coaching problems. Eagles have been a high scoring team. If he is gonna breakout, it would be here.

Slaton is the best of the rest, he’ll get the most touches.

P. Thomas crowded backfield on a passing team, even though he is a GL threat. And they are playing a stout G-men defense.

Moreno, Buckhalter will cut into his carries and I believe SD’s defense will step up after a bye and be called out by thier coach.

Mendanhall, who knows how the Steelers will split the carries w/ Parker back. They seem to be more of a passing team here lately.

Good luck to you.-)

Hhhmmmmm, ok, here are my picks for the week.

1. Bengals over Texans – Houston hasn’t really been consistent and Cincy’s on a roll right now.

2. Packers over Lions – Don’t really need to explain this. Packers. In Lambeau. Lions.

3. Ravens over Vikings – Most people like the Vikes here, but I think that the Ravens are gonna play pissed cuz of the last couple losses. Also, Peterson only managed to get 69 rushing yards against the Rams? What is up with that?

4. Saints over Giants – This is a tough call, I think its gonna be a really close game, but I’m gonna say the Saints pull it out.

5. Steelers over Browns – Again, this doesn’t really need to have an explanation. Oh yeah, Polomalu should be back.

6. Panthers over Bucs – I flipped a coin on this one. I mean, I think this is gonna be the Suck Bowl for the week. Both teams are equally bad right now, but I give the Panthers the edge because of Williams and Stewart.

7. Redskins over Chiefs – A strong runner up for this weeks Suck Bowl, and I’m only picking the Skins because I need Jason Campbell to put up some good fantasy points to help me beat Phinaddict.

8. Eagles over Raiders – Can this really be considered a game? Teams that play the Raiders are basically having an extra practice. Eagles will have a field day here.

9. Seahawks over Cardinals – This was kind of a tough call for me. Seattle has been playing better than they should, and Arizona has been underachieving. A divisional game and in Seattle, I give the edge to the Seahawks.

10. Pats over Titans – I really don’t know what happened to the Titans, unless they are trying to mimic our turnaround from last year, except in reverse. Anyway, while I wish it was different, I see the Pats having their way with Tennessee.

11. Jests over Bills – The Bills are just in a sad state right now. They lost a couple more starters to injury, and have looked like they have almost just given up. And going against a pissed off Jests team and Rex Ryan’s ego.

12. Falcons over Bears – I really haven’t been that impressed with the Bears and Cutler experiment, and the Falcons look to have recovered from their earlier stumble. I see this as a close game, and probably a good one to watch. I see the Falcons pulling this one out though.

13. Broncos over Chargers – The Broncos have been the surprise team of this year and have actually played pretty well. Orton looks a lot better than he did with the Bears and they got some ex Phins in there, not to mention Brian Dawkins. But you can’t discount Rivers, Jackson, and Gates. I see the Broncos pulling this one out at the very end, since that is kind of their thing.

Surprise upset pick: Rams over Jaguars – I know, I know, the Rams? Really? Yes really. I have seen improvement from them each week, nothing dramatic but improvement none the less. Their defense has actually been fairly decent, but is getting tired from being on the field too much. They were able to hold Adrian Peterson to 69 yards rushing last week. That at least says something. They have Atogwe roaming in the secondary who is a great player, and their 2nd round pick James Laurinaitis is looking to be a stud pickup for them. I think this week their offense gets it together and supports Steven Jackson by taking some of the pressure off him to basically be the entire offense.

Game to watch: Saints vs Giants.
