Ginn Critics

Hope you rethink some of the criticism.  Ginn's 53-yard TD reception and his good return giving them decent field position prior to the final drive were both instrumental in the Dolphins win tonight.   It was a great team effort ...... the running game was great, the OL beat the Jets at the line and Henne had an excellent game.   All of this was very positive and ........ Ginn came through when they needed him as well.   If the Dolphins are going to move forward ..... they do it as a team.   Enough with the sniping.

Our defense almost beat us…

by PhinsFan69 on Oct 13, 2009 12:02 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

No,

The refs did.

Kidding. I do agree that we did almost beat ourselves on defense, but come the hell on: how do you call that last pass interference call that way?! That was playing the ball, no real contact, clean. But Henne developed his rhythm and confidence and came back EVERY drive anyway.

Number 7 looks legitimate.

In my opinion it indeed was pass interference, he stopped looking at the ball, turned

his head around and kind of locked Edward’s arm. But whatever… we won

by MauMontaV5 on Oct 13, 2009 12:23 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

That wouldn't have been pass interference even if he had been playing Edwards instead of the ball

That was an absolutely terrible call and it almost cost us the game. Allen’s right arm never fully tangles with Edwards’ arm and at no point inhibited him from making the catch. I listened to Sirius NFL Radio on the way home tonight and even the radio hosts thought it was an appalling call.

I thought it was a bad call,

but one you see called a lot, it was close to pass interference, what can you do, the refs don’t get to see it in slow motion from multiple angles.

Thats all I'm saying

How quickly we forget the 2 passes against Indy. Henne placed that ball so perfect, if he didn’t catch it he deserved to be cut b4 he made it to the sidelines.

1 Clear Cut Drop Against Indy

I agree that one of the drops against Indy was inexcusable. The other …… lots of tangling up of arms on that one ….. not clear cut, in my opinion.

by Jeff I on Oct 13, 2009 12:42 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

completely agree Neo

Ginn made 2 catches, 1 clutch. If he is a real #1 or #2 WR, he would have to do more than that.

i am happy he made the TD catch, and it was beautiful, but it proves nothing. He needs to do that every game.

No .... but

give credit where credit is due. Ginn is a 3rd year player. His critics (you, apparently, among them, Neo) seem to want to trash him at every turn. Tonight he made to plays that contributed in a big way to the team victory. If you relish in trashing him for other missed plays in prior games …… at least give him credit when he comes through. And, I might add, going up against Reavis is not easy. Reavis has shut down several great receivers thus far in his short career.

by Jeff I on Oct 13, 2009 12:27 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

No sir

Not at every turn. (I’ve been too busy w/ Pennington) Just when a top 10 pick and suppose to be ur #1 WR diasppears for 4,5,6 games at a time, he deserves it. I was holding out hope for Ginn till about last week. He made a couple of good plays today, and I’ll give him props.

I just don’t wanna hear all this about Ginn has arrived and is all this and that. We went through this last year when he had that one big game (forget who it was against). Then we didn’t hear from him for the rest of the year.

As for the sniping. I believe everyone complains about our teams needs. So as though, I don’t understand while your singled me out, cause I’ve hardly attacked Ginn, I do have a right to the facts.

Guys ....

Nobody is saying he is Randy Moss. But, as Akilles13 notes, he has his strengths. The Dolphins can use him more effectively for the time being. If he eventually develops into a better receiver overall ….. great. If not, he still has potential to make game-changing plays. It shouldn’t be all-or-nothing with the guy. If you are more interested in the overall success of the team rather than relishing the trashing of an individual player …… fine. I just think there are more productive ways to approach this.

by Jeff I on Oct 13, 2009 12:58 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

What are his strengths? His speed and what else?

by esco6781 on Oct 13, 2009 7:05 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Esco

Watch the film ……. without his speed, that play doesn’t happen. He beat Revis by two steps and then was gone by the time Rhodes and Leonard tried to get Revis’s back. Also give great credit to the OL for giving Henne excellent protection and to Henne for a great pass. Team effort playing on the strengths of individuals (and collectively with the OL). What’s wrong with that or …… do you prefer to just trash Ginn?

by Jeff I on Oct 13, 2009 8:44 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

all he is saying is that, yes Ginn has straight line speed.

if he can outrun a defender, great. I posted a fanpost about whether or not Henne would make Ginn better. The consensus is that, other than a 9 route, Ginn is not good at making cuts or beating a defender with his route running.

and it is now a legit threat, and most teams don’t have a guy that can keep up with him, teams will have to respect that now, and thats really all you need from him, besides he’s not as bad as he is made out to be by some, he is 2nd on the team in rec.

Enough with the Ginn hating

He’s a solid #2 and he absolutely burned Revis (arguably the league’s best corner) out of his shorts on that bomb from Henne. Ted’s never going to be a guy who makes tough catches over the middle or hauls in fade routes in the end zone. He’s a straight-up vertical threat with lethal speed. A lot of people thought that Ginn would be put to better use with Henne’s arm, which is exactly what happened on that long pass play.

Meanwhile, while we’re looking for a #1 wideout, Ginn might be our running game’s best friend.

Why does everyone swear the Revis is the ebst corner. maybe in the AFC east, but not in the NFL. He burnt him once, but what did he do against him the rest of the game. Ginn is good for speed and decoy. If he returns next year, he needs to put on at least 10-15 pounds of muscle and then he can be more like Steve Smith (either one)

Well.....

He spreads the ball around because he knows he doesnt have a true #1. But it seems like this is a good thing, because defenses wont be able to zone in on one particular player. It makes them a bit more honest, and if they stack the box trying to stop R&R, then he will eat them up.

by esco6781 on Oct 13, 2009 8:42 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

To me Ginn has missed more “key” and “game breaking” catches than anyone else. he needs to put in over time with the QB and get more coaching. He is making big bucks and needs to perform like it. I never doubted him on the return game because it was his specialty in college. It would be nice he could return a PR/KR for a TD, but maybe I am asking too much. Teddy only got two receptions. To me he is becoming more of a Patrick Crayton type player. A speedster that runs down the field and will make a big play maybe once a game, if at all. I need to see more consistency from him. He disappears and reappears way too much, being invisible most of the time. Does he have potential? yeah, sure. But come one. If you are the number one receiver you need to act like it, perform like it and live like it.

caught the ball with his chest and it almost popped out.. because he doesn’t use his hands to catch balls and normally uses his chest he ends up with a lot of dropped balls. Im glad he held onto that one last night and i like getting on his case because if he does absolutely nothing then you can say it was excpected but if he catches a bomb its just an added bonus.

There are plenty of guys who made short careers of running by people for big plays..

When their speed starts to go, they find themselves out of a job. Ginn is of this variety until he can consistantly do the things a true #1 or #2 receiver NEEDS to do.

He’s a great #3 at this point of his career and that’s ok, just don’t call him a #1 and he won’t be “unfairly” judged.

Show me: slow blocks, precise route running, separation withing 15 yards, ability to break away from a jam at the line, getting open no matter what…
and I’ll annoint Ginn a #1 or #2…. he’s still working hard and I credit him for that.

Let’s all wait until year’s end, because Henne is a different QB than CP10 and that may begin to play to his strength, and if it is ONLY the bomb, then so be it… bombs away!!!

Fair Enough

Good post, NJDolphan68. I agree with all the points you make. I think the point I was making to initiate this thread is that Ginn has significant potential but already has the ability to make big plays ……. whether it is going deep, handling kick returns or possibly the occasional reverse or taking a pass in the flat and finding a hole to explode through.

by Jeff I on Oct 13, 2009 12:40 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I'll step right up as a very long time and adamant Ginn critic...

as in from the day we picked him, er, sorry, picked his family :-)

First off, good on’ya Ted Ginn, you made a sweet catch in the endzone on that bomb. Well done.

Now it would have been nice if you’d caught the one that hit you in the hands against Indy – we might have won that game but hey, this is progress right?

Braylon Edwards, who had a good game, is a #1 receiver (when he cares enough to try that is). Look at the routes he was open on, the size and speed he has. Ginn simply doesn’t have those dimensions.

Last night’s game was for me, indicative of the type of receiver Ted Ginn can be with a QB like Henne who has the tools to deliver the ball to any spot on the field.

Ginn is primarily a one-dimensional receiver. He is not a #1 receiver and it is questionable if he is really even a #2. He’s not a guy who is going to regularly make big catches over the middle in traffic to move the chains, nor does he have the ability to threaten to take it to the house on every catch the way Fitz or Andre Johnson or Calvin Johnson do.

So yes Ginn is one dimensional, but he is a very important dimension for this team because when it comes to deep threats, Ginn is our dimension. All the other guys are overwhelmingly short to intermediate receivers.

Involving Ginn in the game plan with go routes, deep outs, and fly patterns, is critical. It pushes back those safeties and keeps the defense from stacking the line. Enter Ricky & Ronnie and you have the making of some big time running as a result.

If we can keep building this team to be a contender then Ginn could be, if he doesn’t disappear in games, play a role like Alvin Harper or John Taylor did for the cowboys and 49ers.

by Natalya on Oct 13, 2009 6:34 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

ALL great points Nat

and I have never seen him as anything other than a tremendous weapon IF you have some relief on the other side of him vs. thinking in my wildest dreams he’s a #1 WR because he simply CAN’T EVER be that because of the way he’s built.

Heres my thinking, you have two guys who are both 5’11" and weigh180, one measures 3 feet from heel to hip socket and the other measures 3 feet and 6 inches from heel to hip, which one is better balanced and has a lower center of gravity?

Ginn is the longer legged version in this example and thats why you can decleat him with a slap on the shoulder pad,he can’t help that of course but it’s the reason he will NEVER be able to break tackles, cut on a dime etc. but make no mistake about it if he can get off of the jam and learn to run better routes and we add a #1 Ginn will become a star in his on right,I certainly hope so for the betterment of our team.
