Will the Jets play the Fins like the Ravens did in '08?
It is no secret that the Ravens Defense dominated the Phins in two games in ’08. The architect of the Ravens Defense is now the head coach of the Jets, Rex Ryan. One of the big questions going into tonight’s MNF game is whether the Jets Defense can duplicate the success of the Ravens Defense in shutting down the Miami Offense?
First we need to talk about what the Ravens did to the Phins and for this post I will concentrate on the Playoff Game. I was there and able to see, first hand, what was happening on the Ravens Defense. The Ravens were able to dominate defensively in this game because of the Ravens completely disregarded the Phins passing game. You may be wondering how I can make that statement? Simple, the Ravens spent the majority of the game in either a Cover 3 or a Cover 1.
Cover 3 is a 3 deep zone with the FS and CB’s each covering a deep third of the field. This coverage allows the SS to walk up into an 8-man front to stop the running game. (The SS for the Ravens was 3rd in tackles for the game with 7, 3 for a loss or no gain.) So, why does a standard Cover 3 defense show no respect for the Phins passing game? Easy, this coverage gives an offense the advantage in the passing game. Because 8 men are committed to stopping the run, the CB’s and FS are exposed. They have to protect against the big play so they play deep and not allow WR’s to get behind them. This opens up the sidelines for 7-10 yard outs that are almost impossible to defend.
Cover 1 is man to man coverage with the FS free to roam the middle of the field. This coverage is a favorite of the Ravens because of the playmaking ability of Ed Reed. It gives him the freedom to read the QB, read the route combinations, and make the appropriate play. Like a Cover 3, Cover 1 allows the SS to walk up into an 8-man front to support the running game because his coverage responsibility is usually the TE. So, why does a standard Cover 1 defense show no respect for the Phins passing game? This coverage puts a lot of responsibility on the CB’s to cover the WR’s man to man all over the field. Man to Man coverage schemes make the CB’s susceptible to double moves and big plays.
Now, the question we need to ask is why in a league dominated by the Cover 2 would the Ravens choose to play these coverages the majority of the time against the Phins? IMO, this question has multiple answers:
1. Both coverages allow the SS safety to support the run, the strength of the Miami Offense.
2. The Holes in the Cover 3 are sideline routes, outs and comebacks. Both of those routes require arm strength to throw. Pennington’s arm strength was questionable at best.
3. To beat Cover 1, the WR’s must be able to beat the jam off the LOS and create separation from the CB. As we have debated a number of times on this site, the Phins WR’s are not particularly good at either of those skills.
So in essence, the Ravens Defense played the coverage schemes to take advantage of the weaknesses in the Phins Passing Offense. And they did it very well. The Ravens committed a lot of men to the LOS and were daring the offense to pass the football, and the Phins couldn’t do it.
My guess is that Rex Ryan will try to do the same things with the Jets tonight. Will the stronger arm of Chad Henne get the Jets out of a Cover 3? Will the Phins WR’s be able to separate from man to man coverage? Will the Phins make enough plays in the passing game to move the SS off the LOS and open up the running game?
Here are some things to look for in tonight’s game:
· Are the Jets playing with 8 men in the box?
· If so, what is the coverage behind them? In a Cover 3 the FS and CB’s are on the same plain, say 12 yards off the LOS. In a Cover 1, the FS should be significantly deeper than the CB’s.
· What are the routes being run by the WR’s?
As a former college player and coach, I always enjoy watching the game within the game so to speak. And all of this is most likely meaningless. The team that wins tonight will be the one that blocks, tackles, runs, and catches the best, regardless of the scheme. But that doesn't mean I won't be looking for where the SS is on field and hoping the Phins can take advantage of this positioning.

Very good post by the way, lots of things I didn't know.
I don’t particularly like this match up tonight. Im almost positive they are going to stop the run effectively as you say with too many guys on the box. That means they are going to challenge Henne to throw. Add our subpar receivers, their amazing secondary and that unbelievable corner they got and our qb starting just his second game in the NFL… Not loving it.
The defense has to make up for their subpar play the first 3 games of the season and put us in a position to win.
PS- For all the Henne lovers and “you can’t beat good defenses with Pennington” this is it. This is the game where you prove that. I know he is a rookie qb and im a realist and expect mistakes and everything. But what I’m saying is that people wanted Henne because he can stretch the field and all. They wanted that over Pennington’s accuracy, smarts and taking care of the ball. Fair enough. Now is time to show it

Our gameplan is still very much a CP10 offense....
2 weeks of 3-4 practices, isn’t going to be enough time to significantly change a playbook developed and practiced in a full offseason, OTAs, Preseason games, and a couple regular season games……
Expect a lot of the same, with maybe a couple deeper throws, but it wont’ be significantly different.

And you are right about Henne. If the Jets gives Henne the opportunity to make throws to the sidelines, he has to take advantage of it with his arm strength. Let’s just hope that Revis doesn’t jump the route.

Well,
when they stack the box against the WC this game, we’ll see PW get a couple chances to throw it. This has to be the game they have been saving him for, so long as he hasn’t been atrocious in practice.

Chad Henne is NOT Drew Brees
The Jet D held Brees and Co. to 10 pts in their own building. Im gonna venture a guess that Henne is not any where near the level of Brees nor are the Dolphin receivers in the same league as the those of the Saints. The Phins O will get shut out tonite. Ur only hope is for Sanchez to turn it over on the wrong side of the field.
Falcons spanked the Dolphins; Patriots spanked the Falcons; Jets spanked the Patriots.

No one is.
Peyton Manning and Drew Brees are alone atop the active NFL. They exist on another plane entirely.

So you've beat Houston, NE, and Tennessee...
Wow. I’m shaking. Congrats on beating the Patriots. But, really, you are going to tell us how great your team is based on wins against the Titans and the Texans? Those two teams have won a combined 2 games thus far this year. Must feel good to beat a team that can’t win and a team that has only won twice.
Meanwhile, the teams we have lost to have 9 wins. That’s a big difference.
If you want to play let’s look in the past, how was last year for you? I believe we beat you. I believe WE were AFC East Champs. I believe you brought in your savior in Favre only to fail. So now, teh same team is back with a younger QB and a loud mouth coach, and that makes you the shit? Explain it.
Oh, it must be the unbelieveable defense you have, right? You are the number 3 defense in the league. Wow. Guess what? We’re number 5. Huge advantage there. You do beat us on passing D, as you are #4, and we are all the way down to #13. But, then again, we are #1 against the run, and you are at #8, so your defense really isn’t that much better than ours.
Oh, but you have the (new) savior. You have Marck Sanchise. Thank God for that. Hopefully he didn’t schedule a GQ photo shoot for tonight. But, his play on the field has him ranked as the #24 QB in the league right now. Amazing! He’s grouped around Matthew Standford, Jake Delhomme, Kevin Kolb, and Matt Cassel. Wow! I’m stunned by this performance.
You know, the 24th ranked QB…but Miami has the #33 in Chad Pennington, who has missed a game and a half now and the #39 in Chad Henne…AFTER 1 START!
So, you’re QB doesn’t compare either.
So, where’s your advantage?
Oh, I know what it is…it’s Fireman Ed and the JEST fans…no, cause this is in Miami.
Why don’t you shut up, go back to your own fansite, and see if you guys can make it to double digit comments tonight.

And they have a passing game that u have to pay a ton of attention to. Its a lot easier to run when the the other team has to go d-back heavy. Won’t havethat problem with the Fins, however. Just creep 8-9 into the box and put Revis on one of the garbage receivers and roll coverage to the other.

One thing I do know is that Chad Henne will have to make a play here or there down the field against NY’s defense tonight. If he’s successful, the Dolphins can definitely win this game.

All true stuff
BUT, the Jets D is no where near what the Ravens D does week in and week out. Granted that Ryan is molding them into his image, but that Ravens D was insane before he even got there. No doubt they have a nasty pass rush, but Henne will have to make them pay for blitzing. Needs to find that open guy…maybe Fasano can break outta his season funk and get open underneath? Maybe, and just maybe, if he gets the ball he hangs onto it for once this year? The guys is still worth -2 points in fantasy football, lol.

This is the reason
They made the trade for Jake Grove. As stated before, he is a big upgrade over Samson Satele. He was brought in to handle the Kris Jenkins and Vince Wilforks of the division. He does his job and and the rest of the O-line does its job and Ricky-Ronnie-Patrick-Lou should be able to continue to use the running game successfuuly. This is where I believe Rex Ryan’s ego from last year’s success in Baltimore will be his downfall. Even though he has brought Bart Scott and Jim Leonhard with him, outside of Jenkins and Revis the defensive talent is not the same level as Baltimore.
As far as the receiving corp goes, if the Jets play cover 1 or 3, straight deep routes down the sideline are not the answer. However crossing routes will work where our receivers can work together to get each other open.
The other thing that will work against an aggresive defense is quick dropbacks and throws for Henne. Now I know this can be alot to ask of a 2nd year QB, but it will keep the pass rush off him with three and five step dropbacks.

Thanks Matty
I think Henne will take his shots down the field. I would like to see some max protection and some 1 or 2 man routes. Play action pass, suck up the safety, max protect. Let’s give Henne some time and see if he can hit Ginn on a fly pattern behind the coverage.

Good post ct
anyone in their right mind would dare us to pass given the situation but I honestly think that gives us an advantage in this game because I really like Henne and our WRs abilities if given the chance.
Henne is more than capable of having a very good game if our OL does a decent job and they will come after him no doubt but again I think that opens up so many more possibilites but like you said they have to execute.
by firedanhenningnow on Oct 12, 2009 3:00 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Thanks FDHN
The Jets are going to hit Henne, probably often. Good defenses always find a way of getting to the QB. While I do think that the Phins OL is better than last year, it will still fall on Henne to stand in the pocket and make plays even when there is a tremendous amount of pressure. Plus he has the arm strength to make throws off his back foot or when his feet aren’t set, something that Pennington had trouble doing.

Jets vs Ravens Defense
Yes simular, but the Jets are no way as good individually as the Ravens. There are no Ray Lewis’s or Sugs out there for the jets

would you like to have the first 2nd round pick back and take rey rey? :) yeah me too. I think we should run 65+% of our plays and 70+% pass plays off of play action like griese did when we had a simular strength offensive team… run, stop run, time of possission we shouldnt try to get cute or smart

One big difference between this game and the 2 against the ravens
During both games against the ravens the dolphins offensive line was no way as strong as it is today the didn’t have thomas and sateele was at center instead of grove and if I remember correctly smiley wasn’t in the lineup either so hopefully the dolphins will be able to open up some larger holes for thier backs to run through and do a better job stopping the blitz

I am a huge fan of yours on this site.
That’s the problem with football. Coaches always know how to attack certain defenses and coverages. They all know where the weaknesses are. But it is all in the execution of the plays. As much as coaches like to think that the game is won with X’s and O’s, it is usually won with the Jimmy’s and Joe’s!

The fact is the Jets defensive PLAYERS are not as good as the Ravens
and I’m sure Henning is aware of the coaching change. If Rex plays the wildcat the same way the Ravens did, Henning will employ his counter.

Hey Ct, amazing stuff dude!
I love posts like this because they teach me something. Like Phins Tifosi said, we are better fans now because of you!! You definitely have a unique insight considering you were at the game.
With that being said, this jets team is not the Ravens. Respect us or not, they dont have Ed Reed, Ray Lewis, etc. Henne will get his shots down field. His throws will get there fast, lets just hope most of them arent to stone hands ginn. Im looking for our T/E position to actually come out of the closet tonight. Im also keeping my eye on brian hartline.
not that you need it at this point, but rec’d!!

The O goes to the line in a spread, CH reads the D, as needed, we change the formation to wildcat or other set, see if they then change, then play off their reset?

Corner alignment will also determine whether its cover one or three
there usually is a little more cusion underneath for Cover 3, whereas it could be more of a jam technique for Cover 1. Linebackers are another thing to look at. Many times (not always) linebackers in cover 3 drop into zones instead of coering man for man as they do in cover 1

good post ct - but one point of ....
3. To beat Cover 1, the WR’s must be able to beat the jam off the LOS and create separation from the CB. As we have debated a number of times on this site, the Phins WR’s are not particularly good at either of those skills.
but T Ginn was open downfield most of the game, but a combination of a strong push by the d-line and blitzing backers pushed the o-line back and prevented penne from steping into his throws, plus his weak(er) caused his down field throws to hang… allowing coverage to adjust…
so the question might be is will the o-line protect better… allowing to QB to get the ball to the WR downfield.
The Future is now, stop the bandwagon and lets get the Henne train rollin, as we all hope that the 14th dwarf is the real prince charming.

Doesn’t matter how wide open the receiver is if the quarterback doesn’t have the time to throw the ball to them.

Cover 1, 2 or 3 – it don’t matter against this Jets D. They bring the house on almost every down. We need to keep runningt he ball and use the play-action pass a lot more than we have in the first 4 games…..assuming Fasano can catch the ball AND hang-on to it.
