The ShotGinn Package
Ted Ginn's #1 fan here. Like most Phins fans, I've been disappointed in Ginn's career so far and he has dropped a few too many balls for my liking, but I've had enough of all the anti-Ginn comments on this site. I not trying to convince you that Ted Gin is a #1 WR - I know I'd get hammered for that. I'm not even sure if I believe it anymore. But I do think that many of the criticisms are rather harsh and unfair. Ted Ginn was never meant to be a so-called #1 WR. He's a prisoner of his draft status and a victim of the unrealistic expectations that go along with that top 10 pick. Here's my take on these 2 issues:
Unrealistic Expectations:
Nobody should ever expect Ted Ginn to be a #1 WR. What constitutes a #1 WR is another debate for another post, but for now I'll presume 1500+ yrds, 15 TD's; 6'4"-220 lbs; constant double teams and regular pro bowls.
If only the Dolphins would use Ginn like he was meant to be used we could have the makings of a beautiful friendship! Ted Ginn needs to be used as the "X-FACTOR". His best asset is his elite speed. He's an incredibly natural athlete who (until this year it seems) had sure hands. He's the kind of guy that you put the football in his hands and you let him do amazing things. Throw it to him, run a reverse or return the kick-off - just get the ball in his hands. Find different ways to incorporate his skill-set. At Ohio State they had him run their own version of the Wildcat and they called it the ShotGinn Package. If it weren't for some bogus penalties that called back some of his return TD's, nobody would be talking about Devin Hester. Sure I'd like Ginn to play more like Steve Smith and DeSean Jackson but I'd be just as happy if he were used more like Reggie Bush and Percy Harvin.
Draft Status:
For everything else that Cam Cameron did wrong, he saved us from Brady Quinn and he gave us Ginn. Who else was he going to pick? For years, the Dolphins had defensive minded head coaches and for the first time we get an offensive guy in charge and we expect him to take a defensive player with his very first ever pick? The 3 blue-chip offensive prospects (C.Johnson, A.Petersen, J.Thomas) were already taken along with the top-rated QB (Russel) and 2nd rated OT (L.Brown). The picks at #8 (DE - J. Andersen) and #10 (DT - Amobe Okoye) are total flops. Only 5 first rounders drafted after Ginn have been selected to the pro bowl and 4 of them play defense (Willis, Revis, Griffin, Beason). The other was Lynch and we already had The R&R Express. As for the other 1st rd WR's taken after Ginn - Bowe, Meechem, Davis, Gonzalez) - never in a million years.
With the #9 in the 2007 draft, Ted Ginn Jr (and family) was the best available offensive player and was the right pick.

no he wasn't
I understand Cameron is an offensive minded coach….but YOU DONT REACH in the first round.
Patrick Willis would have been an amazing pick. But fine – at the time we had Crowder and Thomas in the middle so I guess I can understand it, despite Zach being old.
But how about a freakin’ cornerback? Revis perhaps? Revis was a top 10 pick in a number of mocks that year. It wouldn’t have been a reach and it would have solved a problem at a position of need.
But it is what it is….I was screaming at the TV when he took Ginn. But we can’t do anything about it now other than support Teddy and hope for the best.

Pat Willis would have been the correct pick
yes it would seem like we would be phasing out ZT, but could you imagine how much Zach could have helped him? ahh what could have been.

They still play defense
Both Willis and Revis have had amazing careers so far. Revis was hyped in mock drafts but he started to slide and the Jets traded up to get him. In hind-sight he would have been a great pick, but a lot of teams passed on him. As for Willis, he’s a tackling machine but in a 3-4 defense, you just don’t take an ILB at #9. That’s were the OLB pass rushers go. The upside of a WR trumps those positions.

Keep drinking the kool aid. Thats it drink the kool aid.
Ginn was drafted to be our number 1 WR. As you say he was the best on the board at the time he was drafted so in saying that you pretty much say he was worth the spot he was picked at. We all see that is not the truth in the real world.
Henne is now our leader. Lets see what the guy can do !

I think Mel Kiper was sure that Brady Quinn wouldn't get pass the 10th pick
and was confused when dolphins picked Ginn.

You cant get away with too many more than we already run.
We ran 3 last week. Two with Ginn. Thats about the limit before the defense catches on.

are you seriously saying
that you wouldn’t rather have had Darryl Revis?
we also could have gotten Sydney Rice with our 2nd instead of wasting it on John Beck.
by NC Mike on Oct 11, 2009 4:29 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
John Beck looked good coming out of college
You can’t expect a coach to have all his draft picks be stars. weeks before this season, i was on here and it seemed like the consensus was that Ginn could have a break out year, but fans change their mind very quickly about a player week to week. (Thinks of week 17 of last year)

Lets see how the whole season pans out
then evaluate. its not like we shopuld panic now give up a second and get a guy to be good. panicing never works in life. If he doesn’t pull it around by the end of his 3rd season, id call him a bust. If he improves each week (he has to develop chemistry with Henne) he’s fine. We would still need a big guy at wide out, but the fast guy’s here.

Your right.
We are probably stuck with him at least this year so the best thing we can do is hope that he improves. The people that are calling for him to be cut or traded for a box of ho-hos need to just relax. If he can not figure it out he will be gone soon enough.

I think he will
but if he doesn’t we gave im three years and thats all you can ask for from TS. If he turns it on late this season it will be because of his chemistry with Henne and everyone will be happy. If he doesn’t bye-bye, nice knowing you. Also the fans that say trade him, will be in for another WR that has to adjust to the NFL to be good.(how long will it take to want to trade him for not being a Moss that is great from the start) harsh but its a business

ginn changes himself week to week
he did it for the last 2 seasons. so if he had a great game tomorrow, i’d still say the same things about him. because it would be almost guaranteed that he would flop next week. he’s a shadow man, you think he’s there, then he’s not.

i will pull for ginn
as long as he wears a dolphin uniform. but i didn’t like it when we picked him, and don’t like it now. ginn supporters have said for 2 years he would be a #1. now, when it’s obvious he never will be, it’s changed to - he was never meant to be a #1. look, the guy has been less than stellar so far. that could change in a heartbeat, and i hope it does. but i’m not counting on it.

love the one your with.
The trifecta wants a run-domianted offense and a short passing game. They have no need for a #1 WR. Why not try a few play actions and throw deep to Ginn or pass him the ball once or twice out of the WC?
by crossborderFISHingtrip on Oct 11, 2009 10:38 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I think you need the number one guy. You use your effective running/short passing game
to set up the long strike down field.
BTW love the ode to Stephen Stills there!

i too love ted ginn jr
but i also did love john Beck, still do for some reason but ted ginn does have weapons, and why he doesnt return kicks and punts is beyond me. i mean i think he is (when at full speed) the fastest in the nfl, and untill they start giving him the ball more he will never reach his full potenetial. why do so many screen passes to bess when you have ted ginn. Let me put it this way. If the ball is in his hands there is always the threat that he will score

there are BIG differences between being quick and being fast
try and imagine 2 guys running a 40 yard dash(Mr. Quick and Mr. Fast). The gun sounds and they both take off. The quick guy leads say the first 25 yards. The fast guy catches up around 25 yards and they both finish together. Quick is IMHO a MUCH quality to have in the NFL. Teddy is fast but not quick.
by NC Mike on Oct 11, 2009 6:52 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
And Bess is quick not fast and most importantly catches what is thrown at him.
Ginn could be the fastest and the quickest guy in the league but it counts for shit it he cant catch the damn ball.

The difference in fast and quick is that a quick guy is fast in short burst and fast is well just fast.
Example, Bess is quick. Can turn on a dime very “quickly” but can not beat defenders on say a go route.
Ginn is the compleate opposite. He can fly donw the field but not make the quick moves to seperate from a defender.

yes
he runs out of bounds faster than anyone else in the nfl. no arguement on that.

Thank You
I think everyone hates on him just because they think he is SUPPOSE to be that good in there minds. I mean the guy was never meant to be our number 1. Yet he is starting as our number 1 and they want us to start Turner and inactivate him. What does that say? We don’t have a number 1 receiver and usually he is sure handed. What about that catch last year in the game against the jest. That was amazing. We have nothing to lose this year playing him like we did last year. Now we have a stronger armed QB so maybe when he gets open down the field Henne can deliver. All im saying is just sit back and actually look at the situation. We do not have a number 1 receiver at the moment. Ginn is the fastest player we have at that position and his route running is getting better. We all know this staff doesn’t like to trade picks for players and while we may disagree they are simply rebuilding the teams a few positions at a time. Next year if Ginn hasn’t proved himself I am sure we will have a new high picked receiver. Just a thought for all you Ginn Haters. BTW I am mad at how he has been dropping balls lately but think about this. Braylon Edwards drops just as many if not more. LOL so don’t hate on Ginn.

You Can Always Do Better >>> Who the F!@$ Cares
The main thing that always comes up is how things could have been done better whether its on the field or in the draft and it really is quite pathetic. I mean if we really want to go that route we could of had Tom Brady a couple of times so if its Quinn, Revis, or Willis it doesn’t matter because well we didn’t take them .. PERIOD. I for one also wanted Quinn but am always pulling for whomever we draft becuase that is the only way our team will get better, sitting here crying about it will only drive you crazy because well it is already over. In reality even if we take these players how can we say that our coaching staff doesn’t F!@# it up, Jason Allen has had three different Defense and has been moved positions learning different systems along the way but if he went to say the Steelers he would have enjoyed the same players, coaches and system the entire time .. does he get better there? I don’t know but I’m sure he would of had a better chance.

The Teddy Bear was a wasted pick!
Look , I am not expecting Teddy Bear to be a Larry Fitzgerald or a Randy Moss. But at least be average. He is a soft bellied wimp at best who gets nothing for yards after catch, doesn’t catch anything outside of a pass thrown right at him and appears to be heading straight towards the sidelines at the earliest possible opportunity. Devonne Bess is small and not very fast. Yet, he rarely drops passes, catches whatever is thrown towards him and turns upfield as soon as he gets the ball!
So, we all know Teddy Bear was a wasted pick. But at least if he acted like he is a STARTING WR, I would be happy. But our team looks much better with him on the bench!
