Will Henne make Ginn better?
There has been a lot of discussion about how the transition to a stronger armed QB would help improve Ted Ginn's overall performance as a WR. Most of this discussion centers around the fact that Ginn has, so far, disappointed most fans with his (seeming) lack of ability to get open or make the clutch catch.
We have all heard the theory:
"The Dolphins can not take advantage of Ginn's speed because we do not have a QB who can get him the ball deep."
Yes, I have also heard the argument that CP can throw the ball 60yds, so that should be good enough to hit Ginn deep. But the other side of that discussion is about being able to let Ginn run full out, and still get the ball to him before he runs out the back of the end zone. Right? Throwing the ball in a nice, high arc takes it longer to reach it's target, than it does if the ball is thrown the same distance in a much more direct, flatter trajectory.
Getting the ball there quicker has advantages, like you can hit a WR during a smaller window of being open. But it also has disadvantages.... the lobbed pass is easier to catch than a bullet. However, adjusting to catching the harder thrown balls is entirely incumbent upon the receiver to accomplish. The great WRs will catch anything thrown to them, at any velocity.
I found this discussion of Ted Ginn's ability, and brief description of his performance, in Armando's blog. I often disagree with his opinion on Dolphins football, but I was impressed with these couple of paragraphs. Whether or not you agree or disagree with his assessment, I think most knowledgeable fans will recognize the validity of his position. I will post the excerpt here, with the link to the entire article. Read it and tell me what you think.
Specifically, do you think that our switch to Chad Henne at QB will make Ginn a better WR?
Alleged No. 1 receiver Ted Ginn Jr. has been inconsistent, often ineffective, rarely dominant and never elite since being drafted No. 9 overall in 2007. He is coming off two games in which he dropped two touchdown potential touchdown passes versus Indianapolis, including the possible game-winner. And then he responded to that adversity by catching zero passes despite being targetted six times versus San Diego.
In that San Diego game, Henne misfired on several passes to Ginn. That was on Henne. But Ginn dropped two of those nonetheless catchable attempts. One hit him in the chest, the other on the hands. On another throw, Ginn ran the ugliest, most rounded off out-route I've seen in a long time by an NFL wide receiver. He just kind of looped off the route and, not surprisingly, he wasn't open when the ball came his way.
I know many fans believe Henne will bring out the best in Ginn because the new quarterback's arm can finally make use of Ginn's appreciable trait -- straight line speed.
But I would tell you that rare is the effective WR-QB combination where only one or the other player is playing to par. If you guys are hoping Ginn will suddenly start to light it up simply because Henne is in there, you are mistaken. Ginn has to get much, much, much better to begin being a viable consistent threat for Henne.
Ginn will not instantly get better because he's hitching a ride on Henne's coattails. He's got to do the work to get his job done.

Henne will not make Ginn any better (or worse) than he is. It won’t make his route running better, it won’t make him braver over the middle, it won’t help him beat the jam or press coverage, etc.
What Henne’s presence will do – and this assumes the coaches actually let the kid go deep sometimes – is let us see once and for all if Ginn’s one strength, his speed, is good enough to make him a real threat in the NFL.
Ginn has run deep routes all throughout but now there’s a QB who can at least theoretically, throw the deep pass with ease. Now we’ll see if Ginn actually gets open deep, on a consistent basis.
But again, no, Henne won’t make Ginn better, bigger, stronger or faster. However, Ginn could be more productive with Henne at QB and that’s really what this is about.
And if Ginn is more productive catching deep balls with Henne, then we’ll have more room underneath for other passing options + push the secondary back to open up things for our running game.
Mind you, we still don’t know how Henne will do and how accurate he’ll be. Obviously Ginn’s success will hinge upon that immensely.

I do too
and I’m also tired of wondering if a stronger arm would really allow him to shine but having seen him two and three steps beyond coverage but not even looked at has been frustrating.
Granted Henne will need time for those deep routes to open up and I really question our OL or Coaching or something because it just hasn’t been there out of our base ,I’m hoping that that was due to everyone playing so close to the LOS because they knew the long pass simply wasn’t in CP’s toolbox but what if its been because of play calling?
You would think that flys and back shoulders would really open up if it was all due to CPs inability to throw it that deep but we will see.

What Henne Does Is Give Ginn More Space
Guys with speed need space to run. And one of the drawbacks with Pennington at QB is that space is decreased because of his lack of arm strength.
With Henne, the safeties will have to back up more at the snap of the ball instead of squatting. The CB’s will have to cover the fade, corner, and deep comeback route. All of these things create more open space to allow Ginn to run. It should help his game.
Now whether Henne can get him the ball and whether Ginn will catch it, that’s something tha we will have to find out. Hopefully it will be positive.
I believe Henne will increase Ginn Numbers at best.
You remember the former dolphin, (Wes Welker) who went to New England, I mean this guy became a pro-bowler caliber player at New England, but here at Miami he was just an average player. I still believe Ted Ginn have undiscover potential, we may never see it in as a Dolphin fan.

welker was a hell of a lot
better than “average” when he was in miami. he would have been a pro bowler even if he had of stayed here. above average players are above average no matter what. i hope ginn finally shows us something, but i’m not counting on it.
Your correct! The reason that NE wanted him so bad was because
evertime we played them Welker gave them fits.

In practice Wednesday, the Dolphins’ new starting quarterback, Henne, held the ball to his ear, spotted his target 25 yards downfield and threw a tight spiral on a line that hit Ted Ginn Jr. in full stride over the middle.

I’ve seen Ginn catch it when he knew he was going to get a slobber-knocker as a reward, jump up and give the old 1st down signal but I can’t imagine him liking going across the middle given what roams in that area.

I mean this guy is 6’6 218 lbs and in 4yrs got 2153 yards 15 Td’s with Jacksonville you mean to tell me he’s not young enough for the Tri-Fecta hes only 26. We have experience with drug users do like we did with Williams piss test this guy every week. Sign him to the league minimum for 1 year piss test every week and give him incentives to improve. BAM!!! There you go big WR who’s better then all the ones we got and who will compete for the extra yardage. And he used to be a QB. Wildcat wrinkle anybody?
I like Jones a lot and always have
but I just find it weird that with all the players getting caught with drugs, failing tests etc. that someone hasn’t picked him up..maybe because it was coke or something we don’t know, just seems kinda weird.

Still if Ricky can do it so can this guy. We shouldn’t be scared because of drugs like that, iff were piss testing him. If he gets caught again he shouldn’t play because he would be a dumbass and won’t deserve to play ever.
agreed. i have liked Jones since the draft.
if there is not something else weird going on with him… if he is really clean and willing to work, i think he would be a great pick up. Aside from being a college QB, he also had sub 4.4 speed.

Three or four actually and two reverses off the top of my head
and those came when he had “space” which he hasn’t had a lot of and when he has he hasn’t gotten the ball a lot more than he has.
I don’t know of anyone who seems him as a Johnson,T.O,Fitz etc. type who has the strength to go up against two defenders and muscle the ball away from them, but if you don’t think he consistently gets behind coverage where a strong arm could get him the ball then you’ve lost me.
He might not catch it but if you don’t just see him as someone who always ducks out of bounds or always dives for the dirt I think you would remember quite a few tough catches he has made,he can catch and if thrown to enough deep he will come up with a lot of game changing plays is all I’m saying

ULTRA- Conservative people get even more conservative
when the going gets tough..kinda like when a new QB comes in and you know they are going to throw the kitchen sink, they always do,but yet you still bring in a heavy package and try and run it up the gut out of the I formation vs. going 5 WR’s and hitting them in the mouth.
You either dictate or you get manhandled IMO.
by firedanhenningnow on Oct 2, 2009 1:43 AM EDT up reply actions
I have been wondering where that play has been myself.
Why do we not run that play or at least fake it at least once a game? At least you give the defense something else to think about.
Maybe your right
I just don’t see it that way how many time’s does Manning throw down the field like that or even Brady. The only reason they do throw down the line for the deep ball is after they establish the 15, 20 and even 30 yard passes in the middle of the field so that long ball can surprise everyone. Then they have WR that are big and can get the ball at it’s highest point. Ginn, as I see it, will never go up the middle in a real game and take a chance to get popped by a S or FS and God forbid its a LB the poor little guy will piss his pant’s. Now if he changes all of sudden with Henne then I will HAPPILY shut up about him, but not until I see something that shows he’s willing to get hit to get that extra yard or go up to catch that Game changing TD pass. I truly hope were all wrong about Ginn, and hope he’s the next Steve Smith.
Ginn isn't even a Steve Smith, Roddy White type of receiver
there is absolutely no edge to him at all… those little guys like to mix it up (usually with there own team) That fire is what makes players great and Ginn has never had that. He really does have a losing personality. He doesn’t want to be THE guy and we shouldn’t expect that out of him.
The past 2 weeks have cemented his case for me. He can’t handle being our #1 WR its just not in him.
I probably know Judo! How many of you can make the same boast?
There's only so many time you can throw the ball that deep.
Sooner or later the D is gonna know that were only gonna go deep because thats all Ginn is talented for. He has to learn to go up the middle and get the chunk yardage there to.
Actually...
I think that if we use Hartline and Bess and Fasano etc…to get those 15-30 yard chunks on a CONSISTANT basis that should open Ginn up for the strech the field plays (30+ yards) regardless of that being his “only” talent. If we run well (as we have been) and get that “Chunk” yardage with the other guys consistantly that is wonderful…but if you add Ginn into that equasion at least once every other drive or so then that forces the DB’s back out of the box REGARDLESS of whether or not he catches every one opening up the run game big time and allowing much more of the “chunk” yardage. Think Denver late 90’s…they had a great run game and Elway could always count on a few 30 yarders or so…but EVERY few drives he would take a shot to remind you that it was ELWAY and a gun behind center…it kept the DB’s from loading the box against em.
Just the threat from a few completions like that should open up defences for our Noob and Co. Think about R&R and our Oline against 5 or 6 in the box rather than 8….that could be…“SPECIAL”
well when you put it like that yes it can work
BUT big BUT Ginn has to catch the deep ball he can’t be dropping like he has. But you know what were all jumping the gun with the Ginn and Henne deep ball topic let’s see how they do together for the first time in a actual game. If Ginn doesn’t show up like we all would love him to do “i.e catch something”. We should trade him to Denver with a draft pick to get Marshal or some other team maybe even KC again go for Bowe. etc.
yea let him play a role like Pierre Garcon is doing in Indy look how much were talking about Garcon now. If Ginn played a role like him then we will be talking good about him.
Exactly, because he would be awesome in that role
and I honestly dont think anyone sees him other than that as Daren insinuates.

Maybe, just MAYBE, it’s his master plan——-drop so many balls the opponents don’t even BOTHER trying to cover him, making a long TD catch simply a walk in the park?
Just a thought hehehe

I know so Sad we wont have until we trade for one or get one in the draft.
Unless there is a free agent pick up next year that I don’t know about
As much as I don't want to believe it...
I thin Ginn has reached his potential. He may prove moderately more useful since he can get hit deep if he makes the separation, but Henne gunning it into him isn’t going to make him not drop to the ground or run out of bounds as soon as he gets the ball.

of course ginn will be better
but the question is will ginn be any good….
btw: the ball getting to the receiver quicker has one BIG advantage when it comes to ginn… the safety has less chances to line up a big hit on the receiver… those ducks that pennington/beck/lemon threw deep to ginn allowed the safety to cross the field and line up shots on an already skittish receiver… (see e reed in the b more game)….
and as some have said P Willis sneezing in SF has been know to cause ted ginn to hit the turf in miami, anything that makes teddy feel safer has to be better for his pass catching right….
btw: if there is any doubt about how teddy feels about the new QB….
But during the action i saw Thursday he was consistently in fifth gear, got open during the one-on-one portion of practice, and actually fought the cornerback for the ball and won the battle each time.
What does this mean, especially since Chad Henne and his big arm are finally at the trigger of this offense, possibly waking up the Dolphins’ deep passing game?
The Future is now, stop the bandwagon and lets get the Henne train rollin, as we all hope that the 14th dwarf is the real prince charming.
I think theres something to this
but I would still like to ask him why he was not fighting for the ball the whole time. Really WTF?
I think Ginn will be better because Henne creates space on the field
Speed guys need space to run and Henne gives Ginn that ability because he can make all the throws. Here is something to look at in the game Sunday. What is Ginn’s (or any of the WR’s for that matter) yards after catch? There should be more room to run because there should be more space for the WR’s to work in.

Everyone (media, fans, commentators) was all over Hester prior to the season about making plays. Saying how for 2 years with Grossman and Orton at QB how he has been a disappointment at WR. Coming into the season there were people on sports talk shows calling the Bears WR’s the worst in football.
But now with Cutler throwing the football, that attitude has completely changed. Hester is showing that he is an actual threat as a WR, making tough catches, making people miss, and showing explosive play making ability. Earl Bennett, who couldn’t get on the field for the Bears last year, is making plays. Johnny Knox, a rookie speedy WR, is scoring TD’s and making people miss. Those same commentators are now saying that the Bears WR’s are average to above average.
And the only thing that has changed: An Elite QB! I’m telling you, they make all the difference in the world. They elevate the play of everyone around them. Hopefully Henne can be that guy. Maybe Henne will make the Phins WR’s as productive as the Bears. Then I can change my opinion on the Phins WR’s, because right now I think they suck, among the worst corp. in the league.

Ginn doesn't make people miss. i don't think he ever will.
Hester has ALWAYS done that as a return man. Now he just has a big armed QB.
Very big difference there.

Plus Hester has always been able to break tackles.
Thats something that “fetal position Ginn” has no idea how to do.

Thats sort of become his moniker
untill he can prove that he wants to do something beside fall to the groud or run out of bounds. He should be forced to watch hours of tape on Steve Smith untill he gets what it mean to fight for the first down or fight for extra yards.

Well, as of the game today, the answer is "NO"
Ginn is still going to have problems getting open.

Yeah, Im quite upset with his lack of developement.
Everytime he starts to show something it seems like the next game he dissapears again. One step forward, two steps back.

how about that return on teh opening KO against the Gators, eh eh?
Aside from Ed Reed and Santana Moss, I would say Hester is one of my favorite Canes of all time. Although… Black Jesus is closing in on that list.

There are sooo many great ex Canes its hard to pick.
They should have a wing at the hall of fame just for guys that played at the U!
Wow!! I think Ginn/Henne needs a better play calling Coordinator....
At times i feel, we stick to the same game plan even though is not working.
Ronnie Brown needs to be use on more passing plays to help open things up.Like Philly uses Westbrook. I think our best wide reciever option is Bess because he the most physical of the bunch and has a quick burst that helps him run after the catch better than Ginn. Ginn to me, could be one of the elite kick returner of the league if Dolphins will develop him that way.He could be a game changer if use more that way. Last They have to move players around on Offense a bit more. Defenses are able to put lots of pressure on OL because they have nothing to worry about other than the wildcat!! We have to keep opposing D-backs and safeties honest!
Go Dolphins!!
ooops
or he’ll be benched for a reciever who gets open, makes tough catches, blocks, and doesn’t run to the sidelines looking for purel when p willis sneezes 3000 miles away.
The Future is now, stop the bandwagon and lets get the Henne train rollin, as we all hope that the 14th dwarf is the real prince charming.
true
he cost us a #1 pick, is eating into our cap space, hogging a roster spot, and contributing nothing.
Can’t get much worse than that, eh?
