Matt Roth - Is he really injured?

I read an article about a month ago that questioned whether Roth was injured, or just holding out for more money.  It was shady how it all went down with Sparano not knowing anything about his injury in the press conference.  If Roth's "groin injury" is bad enough to hold him out of OTAs, Training Camp, Exhibitions and 3 weeks of regular season... why has he not had more surgery and been done with it?

I think there's a 3rd option to the list, albeit an unlikely one, but maybe the FO wanted to keep an extra linebacker and concocted a scheme to keep Roth on IR while they decide what to do with Anderson/Wake/Walden/Moses.

I say if he's holding out for more money, PAY THE MAN HIS MONEY!!  He put up incredible numbers for a first year convert.  What do you guys think?

None taken.

I think it’s a mistake to give up on him. Jason Taylor is good at strong side, but he won’t be here more than a year. Plus, he can’t stay on the field for long stretches due to his age. The same goes for Porter. I still think Matt Roth at SS and Taylor and Porter swapping in and out would be so much better than what we have going now.

not so much "giving up" as "moving on"

i don’t like a guy that plays games. if roth is, in fact, not injured but holding out – i say put him on IR.

It all depends on how much he's holding out for.

It could very well be a reasonable offer. He deserves a decent salary after last years performance. I’m not saying improve his base salary, just give him more in the way of incentives.

I see people saying we need to spend more on FA, but we also need to spend more on our current players who would potentially become high priced FAs. We need to get used to paying players more money when they’ve earned it.

I agree with the last part. This FO likes everything cheap

and it’s not going to be possible to win a Super Bowl if they don’t realize that “they have to get used to paying players” That means Elite FAs like Bart Scott or the LB from Arizona that wanted to come to Miami, or Anquan Boldin or whoever. You need playmakers in this league to win.

i don't see it that way

i think (hope) they are being cheap with the “brick and mortar” foundation of the team, but they are starting to pay some people some pretty reasonable salaries. It just doesn’t make sense to pay “Elite” salaries to anyone until they are just those few “Elite” players away from a finished product. We are probably 1 more year away from springing for one of those “Elite” pieces.

yeah didn't finish saying what I wanted

I was going to say I expect them to stop being cheap once the rebuilding process Is almost over. That should be next off season I’d say.

Roth is an OK OLB

He is not an impact player at a position where impact players are a must. I would say that Matt Roth is not a starting OLB in a 3-4 scheme on most teams in the league. His position is definately one that can be upgraded significantly.

easily as well

big strong OLB’s are easy to find.. finding one’s that can rush the pass are harder to come by

I probably know Judo! How many of you can make the same boast?

I completely disagree.

If he were a rookie, his numbers would have been considered great. Since last year was his first year as a convert, you judge like he is a rookie. He did damn well last year.

Also,

If Roth is not starting caliber, why exactly is our pass rush so much worse now than it was at this time last year? The ONLY missing factor from last years starting lineup is Matt Roth.

hmm but thats kind of a biased argument since Matt Roth's main chore

is to be physical and stop the run, not really be a sack machine. So since JT while not doing well on rushing the passer, is indeed having success against the run, its just as if Roth was in there. I agree that he is a quality starter though but he isn’t a big contributor when rushing the passer. He only had 5 sacks last year in 16 games.

5 sacks,

plus how many hurries? Jason Taylor has four tackles this season… FOUR! I ask you… is he really good at stopping the run, or are we kidding ourselves into thinking an old man can play more than a backup role in the NFL?

yes and no

he can start practicing 1 maybe 2 weeks before he can be activated (there is something like a 2 week window for the team to make a roster decision) but he can’t be reactivated before the 6th week or game??

he's holding out for the money

as drew has said, he’s worth a heck of a lot more on the open market then the money he’s being paid right now on. groin injuries are very hard to diagnose and it’ll be hard for the phins to file a grievence against him… So pay him and get him going again, as he was the best LB on the team at the end of last year.

For the Phins saying someone is the best LB is like saying someone is the tallest midget

He might be tall, but he is still a midget!

I can name a half dozen teams off the top of my head (Baltimore, Pittsburgh, Chicago, Minnesota, SF, NYJ, just off the top) where a phins LB would not be a starter. What does that say about the quality of the LB’s on the phins? It says to me that they are a poor bunch.

by ct1361 on Oct 2, 2009 10:16 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

i disagree

I thought roth was playing at a very high level by the end of last year, and i figured he had a pro bowl shot…

plus i think JT woulld start on any of those teams, maybe not in 2 years but right now yes, and it’s hard to say porter wouldn’t after last year….

that said, ILB is certainly a position where the phins are not up to snuff.

If he is holding out for more money then I dont get this..

Why call it a groin injury? Wouldnt that LOWER his value to any other team if Miami does not step up and pay more? If I wanted more money and Miami wouldnt pay Id just hold out and not play. Maybe I am looking it at the simple point of view. But I think I would do something different then fake an injury which could hurt my value down the road.

Henne is now our leader. Lets see what the guy can do !

There are several reasons:

1) It prevents a media frenzy.

2) As W NY Fins Fan pointed out, it prevents The Dolphins from filing a grievance against him due to groin injuries being too hard to prove.

3) He might not want to go to another team, but wants HIS team to pay him what he deserves. This isn’t the NCAA, players actually get their share in the NFL.

well it also

gets him released by the dolphins, who will hold his rights for (2 or maybe 3 years pending the CBA) otherwise he’s stuck playing for a small contract in miami…
