Offseason for Idiots: Your Summer guide to players available
If you are anything like me, you like things spelled out for you plain and simple. I am the farthest thing from a numbers guy - I like to judge a guy by what I see. Well, that's difficult when you have no idea who to look at. That is why I decided to put together a "Joe Sixpack" ( I really hate that expression) Offseason guide. I searched google and gave you the top results in a nutshell. Inside you will find links to numerous mock drafts, some realistic, some down right crazy. I also included a free agent list for the spots I think we will be looking at.
After signing lower tier guys last year, and passing on the Calvin Pace's of the world, I am almost certain we will go young and versatile. I believe that is the smartest thing we can do, and the right move for the longterm good of the franchise. I will say for the first time since Jimmy Johnson was coach, I feel totally comfortable with any/all decisions this regime makes. We have 10 total picks in the 2009 NFL Draft (April 25/26). In case you have been living under a rock for the past 8 months, we have 2 2nd round picks because of the JT trade. That is refreshing to all of us. Recently we traded 2nd round picks for the likes of AJ Feeley and Daunte Culpepper (ughh!!!).
Before we get started, take a look at this:
Miami to Dallas. Miami traded its sixth-round selection in 2009 and sixth-round selection in 2008 (No. 167: used to select linebacker Erik Walden) to Dallas for defensive tackle Jason Ferguson and Dallas' sixth-round selection (No. 195: used to select offensive guard Donald Thomas).
Yes, the Eric Walden special teams stud we picked up midseason. So lets review...not only did we get Fasano/Ayodele for a 4th round pick....but we traded last years 6th rd pick, and this years 6th round pick...to move down in the 6th round in 2008 and a little fellow named Jason Ferguson was thrown in. We then took Donald Thomas (noyce!)....started Ferguson all year.....and then our slickass front office got the player the Cowboys picked anyway. Walden is nothing super, but he is a special teams missile you notice on everyplay. It is offical....the Cowboys sucked this year because of us. We stole their soul....and most of their players...cheap. Sexy Time!!!

Thats enough "Mockery" for now. Now I will post you a list of potential free agents, at postitons the Dolphins might be looking for help at this summer.
Offensive Linemen Free Agent List
Defensive Linemen Free Agent List
LB Free Agent List (Ray Lewis?!)
Quarterbacks (If Beck is cut we will need someone)
Some tasty stuff going on in these lists. Knowing what we know, I would say this regime, just like last summer, lands some lesser guys that can play special teams as well. Especially in the Linebacker and Cornerback department. Of all the lists, wideout seems the most shallow. A guy like Hank Baskett might not be a bad choice, he is big and probally wont comand anymore than Wilford did last season. Julius Peppers seems like a similar gamble the Jets took on Jenkins last year. Both dominated and carried the Panthers for a few years, and both seem to be on the up after a few down years. Jordan Gross pops out at me when it comes to Offensive Linemen, but we have allot of money invested already in our line, so I see us drafting instead of signing anyone expensive. I included the Quarterbacks list because I really believe Beck is on his way out of town. At this point it would be smart for both parties to part ways, He will never start here, and is the oldest 3rd year player you will find these days. As much as I am down on Beck, I do believe its a luxury to have him as our 3rd QB. With guys like Mark Brunell still in this league, guys like Beck are at least a good backup, backup plan. If anyone is willing to give anything above a 6th round pick, I see us trading him. By the way, Donald Thomas was our 6th round pick last year, so dont scoff at that kinda return for someone who will never play. I say land a 3rd QB in the 7th rd (Travis Daniels pick) I do believe this is a great place to take a 3rd QB. Low risk there, and like we have spoken about, I would love it to be a converted QB like Pat White, although he will be gone by then.
I was shocked to see all 3 of the Ravens star LB crew (Lewis, Suggs, Scott) are free agents. Any of them would be a upgrade over Channing. I , like most of you, would like to keep Channing on the team even if someone is signed. I dont see us signing any of them, but I would be all for any of them. Cornerbacks wise, a cheaper option might be Chris Gamble. He is a nice player, and very underated to me. He is athletic as hell, and fairly young, I think medium money brings him down here, and I believe he would be very succesfull down here if we have the right safeties.
So thats the information, now you can get your wheels turning upstairs. As I stated, allot of this info is dated and probally just "fantalk". My goal was to just start throwing knowledge at the wall, and see what sticks. I personally have met Everette Brown and his entire family. Last year I managed the restaurant that held the "Seminole Booster" meetings. He is a down south humble boy, reminds me of CP10 in that sense. His character is exactly what you are looking for in a player. He spoke at a function once, and gave a 30 minute speech on "Why he loves the game". He recieved a standing ovation at the end, and it really was something I didnt expect to hear. Of course I am a homer, but his stats speak for themselves. Some of these mock drafts have him in the top 3, so at #26 I think he would be a steal. If you are looking for a Phins player he reminds me of, It would be a mix of Marco Coleman and Jason Taylor. He is very much like another FSU player the Steelers drafted last year, Lawrence Timmons.
Thanks for reading, and thank you in advance for your feedback. If you have a link to more info I missed I will add it below. We idiots must unite in our offseason search for knowledge. Nicky, Gator, Matty, Lefty...etc...You guys need not apply. You are too smart for this post....and us average men are jealous of you. LOL JK...really we could use your input....actually...WE NEED IT...HELP!

no…this is a post I figured you could go back n forth with…..check the links if you want…look over the free agent list…just cuz if ur like me…u had no idea who was a free agent…and ur just now learning names of guys we might pick.
Example….when we picked Jason Allen he was a stranger to me….ehhhhhhhhh kinda still is! boooooooo Jason Allen.
I name makes me remember past draft screwups…..Eddie Moore….with Boldin there and WR’s in Miami sucking like none other. Going to FSU at the time…..and knowing Bolidn a bit…..I was lost….turns out I wasnt lost….Wanstash was.

That is awesome
So let me get this straight. We traded 2 6’s (08/09) for Ferguson, and a lower 6 in 08. That pick became Thomas. The pick we gave Dallas became Erik Walden, who now plays for us?
Trade Recap.
Dallas gets – 2009 6th round pick
Miami gets – Ferguson, Thomas, Walden
HAHAHAHHAA DALLAS!!!
As far as the draft.. I have no idea what we even want in the first round right now. If it’s a NT, I like Cody from Bama. If it’s a OT, there’s a ton, but the best available will probably be Ciron Black. If it’s a LB, I like Sintim and Cushing. If it’s a Safety, give me some Will Moore. If it’s a WR, I want Maclin or Britt.
HURRY UP APRIL!

I like Cody, too
But has he even declared yet?
Also, the BC nose tackle would be a good fit, but might be gone by the time we pick.
by Matty I on Jan 10, 2009 2:17 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
No- Cody hasn't decided what he is doing yet.
I like B.J. Raji as well but at only 6’-1" and 320 lbs he may be a bit small for the NT position (to compare Terrance Cody is 6’-5" and 365 lbs (!) ). Raji’s B.C. teammate Ron Brace might be a better fit at 6’-3" and 330 lbs, and will be available with a later pick most likely.

I dunno
Loadholt at 350 looks like a slob. Cody at 350 dunking a basketball looks like Shaq in shoulder pads. Big Difference lol.
I wouldn’t mind Cody, but I wonder we need to go THAT big to the point where we may have a guy that can’t hang in conditioning or playing 60 plays in the Florida heat of August. I’d say get a guy smaller and more athletic, and get his ass in the weight room until he pancake the 350 guy.
"Are we doing this? Is this happening?"
by Little Nicky 21 on Jan 10, 2009 1:31 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Ferguson is only like 310, isn't he?
So a 320 pound NT is acceptable, I think.
by Matty I on Jan 10, 2009 1:49 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I just want a guy ...
that bench presses cars. His weight to me once it hits 310 or so doesnt matter…i want a guy that WILL NOT MOVE. I want a guy there that makes it impossible to run right up the middle…that collapses the pocket….that causes false starts…all that
Haynesworth is a 4-3 guy..but he is the picture in my head lol
I think NT is the most underated spot on a team . If that guy is pushing people back and forcing double teams…the rest of ur defense looks 50% better. Tim Bowens used to do it for us…..
I am against drafting any WR’s after round 2. NO MORE PROJECTS! Get me a Crabtree….or sign me a proven guy like Boldin…or a cheaper up n comer like Baskett.

I agree with everything you said
right up until the last paragraph. I would love to get a WR late in the draft, pay him small, and watch him develop into a stud. You know if this regime takes a WR late that he’s gonna be the real deal. Get me Patrick Turner in round 5 and I’ll be happy.

i wont be happy until..
my NT can literally pick up the center of his head and throw him likea dart at the quarterback…like even run with the center holding him like an arrow..lolollololol.
I wouldnt mind a later WR i guess…but im so sick of these projects. We have Bess and Ginn….2 nice ass projects…getting better. I think you throw another ookie in there…then London plays…and u got a bunch of inexperianced dudes….
if that scenario does happen…i think u need to sign a vet…Issac Bruce type of dude…Toomer even
WHAT I AM TRYING TO SAY IS I WILL SELL MY LEFT NUT FOR ANQUAN BOLDIN….

by Rzayo24 on Jan 10, 2009 2:13 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I'll throw my right one in
and we’ll sell em as a pair.. it’ll just be weird with a massive right nut paired with a pea-sized left one lol
I think if we go with another rookie, and Parcells gets it right, we’ll have this as a receiving corps
Ted Ginn Jr. – 3rd year
Greg Camarillo – 4th year
Davone Bess – 2nd year
Brandon London – 2nd year (practice squad in 07)
Patrick Turner (??) – 1st year
In 3 years, imagine those guys working with Henne behind one of the meanest OL’s in the league? Think for the future. A vet WR sounds nice, but it really just blocks the chance for a younger guy to develop. Unless it’s Boldin, in which case he’ll be in his late-20’s prime and is already a monster.

Yes- it is a Redskins website- but it is one of the most comprehensive databases of mock drafts around, and it is constantly updated.
I see our first 4 picks picks going something like this: 1 OLB , 2a NT, 2b OL, 3 DB (Safety or CB). or possibly another LB.
I’m still convinced we can get a starter on the OL in the 2nd or 3rd but not an elite pass rusher. I’m not convinced Terrance “Mount” Cody will come out otherwise he would probably be my favorite for our 1st round pick though. 365 lb guys who played the 3-4 nose tackle position in college and can dunk a basketball only come alone once in a blue moon. He is a bit on the heavy side but Parcells will fix that. I saw what that kid can do and it is amazing. Black I think is not worth a 1st round grade. Nicky I have a write up on a tackle that will blow your mind! Keep an eye out- or we could do the 1st Kiper-McShay duel over tackle if you want ;)

I can see that
Last year was the complete opposite though. Merling was supposed to go top 20, we got him at 32. Henne was supposed to late first, we got him late second. Bess should’ve been drafted, we got him post-draft.
This year I think it’ll go down how you say, with Parcells taking his guy regardless of what the Kiper/McShay’s say about it. It may look like a reach on draft day, but then once camp starts and the guy is a stud, Parcells (again) proves he knows more than all the talking heads combined.

everyone’s like WHO THE FXXK is that guy? Kiper had a stroke on air. Berman made a “DeMarcus BE-Ware” joke, and I laughed my ass off because I had seen him play a few times and he scared the wits outta me everytime.

hmmm
that’s an interesting one, but I think we would be better off finding a blocking TE. We have Fasano and Martin to go catch passes.

I am rollin with Fasano...
we got him cheap….he catches everything…and he is a massive blocking tight end. what else do we need? the guy might never be Antonio Gates…but ne never makes mistakes. When was the lost time he had a penalty? Any?! lol…or a drop???!!

I think him and Martin
make a good TE tandem, especially once they grow into the system and develop. Fasano is only going into his 3rd season I believe.

no. im not and heres my mindset
pennington filled in admirably. He played beyond what even our trifecta probably thought he would do. That being said, and how he was the reason we went 11-5, our young guys are starting to develop. Trade pennington after this fantastic season and i am sure there are teams ready tog ive 3rd round picks for him.
Use this chance while things are on an upswing. to develop that Qb. and make us still be in contention for division title. But also have that consistent contention. Honestly season-to-season you dont know what you will get out of pennington. And I believe now is the time to develop that qb.

I agree that we need to develop the young kid into the starter
but you don’t have to trade your veteran leader to do that. Pennington is more valuable as a backup than a 3rd round pick at this point. In another year, if you can still get something for him, and you’ve found your future QB without a doubt, then you deal him. But I think we need to keep him until we are absolutely sure we have the future. All signs point to Henne being the guy, but you don’t know until you see him on the field.

no but the thing is
most cases maybe a 3rd round may not be worth pennington
but with trifecta calling shots we are guarenteed a solid player
and if we wait…then teams wont be ready to give that 3rd round pick
i know what you mean by he is a perfect insurance type of guy…but we are having this youthful movement and any 2nd-4th round draft picks are VITAL. and i feel that traded pennington right NOW (before camps and draft) would most benefit us.
and neo also stated…with the younger guys, we may also be able to open our playbook more.I understand you dont wanna hear anything bad about chaddie. but right now, best interest of our team is to deal him. and 3rd and maybe a package deal or something to the vikings can get us a higher pick! teams are desperate for a qb like pennington, but for us I dont think he is in our best interest moving on to next year.
Enough is enough...we need Natalya back. I believe in John Beck and that LCFF is the man.

I'm not the " I guy..
I understand your point perfectly, and it’s a good argument. My side of it is we don’t have ANY veteran leadership on offense if Pennington is traded. I know we’re having a youth movement, but there still needs to be veterans to lead the team. I want Henne to be the starter, but I still want Pennington on the team because of what he brings in the locker room.
I disagree saying the best interest of the team is to trade. I think the best interest of the team is to keep him and allow him to backup Henne and continue teaching and helping Henne develop into a good QB. It’s not in the best interest of a team to dump all it’s veteran leadership for draft picks. When the QB position is settled for the future, then we can talk about letting Pennington go, but not now.

i kno but the thing is...the thing is chad henne and john beck both have leadership skills
we get value for CP right now!
and the rook’s last year are definetly stepping up. You think jake long wont take hold of the offensive line? lol
Wr’s bess and ginn are going to step up. and dont forget ’rillo the mexican jumping bean.
and rb’s…self explanatory
i think CP was PERFECT LAST YEAR with so many no exp young guys. but now its time to go for the youth.
(thanks for actually having a legit conversation lol…that makes you primetime buddy)

They may have leadership skills
but Pennington is in charge of that locker room. I’m sure we have the right attitude on the team to handle it if Pennington is gone, but why risk it? Bess and Ginn aren’t leaders. Jake is still learning, I’m not sure he’s ready to step into a leadership role. Ricky isn’t a leader, and Ronnie isn’t that guy that’s gonna step in and call a meeting to correct something or do those things.
The thing is, we STILL have young inexperienced guys all over the place, and we’ll be adding quite a few more by the time next season starts. I’ve been coaching for a while, and I’ve seen how valuable a guy who willingly steps into a leadership role can be. It’s like an extension of the coach. Defensively, we have a bunch, (Porter, Ferguson, Holliday, Bell) but offensively we really only have CP.
And I don’t think the value of one extra pick outweighs the value of Pennington at the facility every single day helping all our young inexperienced guys learn the ropes.

More Complete FA List
The website linked on the original post are great…but I found the following website to be more thorough. They even rank them: http://profootball.scout.com/a.z?s=127&p=9&c=12&nid=83&lnid=83&yr=2009

couple of points
the FA list today looks a lot better then it will in a month… just like last year, a lot of the cream gets tagged and signed before FA… so you are often left with overpaying the crowders of the world vs. grabbing the studds….
that’s not to say there wont be a few gems around….
my choice for FA signing will be delhomme… if we are going to be stuck with a veteran caretaker QB then give me one who can throw a 20 yard pass on 3rd and 15.

sheesh it a frigging joke
yeah – i sort of notice the guy had a worse playoff game than penne and that is saying something…
so maybe i should have ended with /sarcasm off, but i figured everyone, maybe you and Nic above all others would know that
Caretaker 14 would a continuation of my personal nightmare…. lets just call it the curse of the pornstache… the inability to play a young QB with a future.
so maybe next time someone mentions a free agent, i’ll go with JP and people will understand it’s a knock on the decision to keep bringing in these washed up noodle arms instead of playing the future.

i disagree i dont want pennington to start next year. but if we want a vet qb as insurance
lets keep pennington
no need to spend more money
he knows the system
but i would rather trade pennignton and pick up lets say a delhomme type of a guy while beck/henne battle for the job.

wait...
trade Pennington, then pick up Delhomme? Why are we talking about Delhomme?? Are we trying to further complicate the QB position or get it solved once and for all? This is ridiculous.
"Are we doing this? Is this happening?"

no trade pennington to get value
then pick up delhomme for that vet type of atmosphere. i DO NOT …DO NOT want delhomme to come here …or start here!
but if we can get value for pennington (3rdish) then pull the trigger
and then bring in someone else cheap…or get pat white.
1. beck
2. henne
3. white

so we look like Kansas City shuffling QB's around all year?
No Delhomme. Don’t trade Pennington until you are SURE you have a guy to take the job. I’m not riding with Henne and Beck until I know one of them is the future.

i feel like im dreaming…..this dude calls for Delhomme 12 hours after he throws 5 picks and fumbles in a game…cuz he “can throw a 20 yard pass”.
People…if you want one of our young guns to go in…im ok with that..its gonna happen anyway sooner er later..but this just shows how little people know

My 2cents
Well i got to say that the links were pretty good and I enjoyed reading your article. As far as our free agants go I think we should re-sign them all. We have built a pretty good team chemistry here, and they are proven leaders and veterans on our team. Plus the most important part, they will more than likely be cheap. I mean they are all good, but not GREAT. In the draft we can always address WR because they come a dime a dozen, I mean look what we did with a bunch of UDFAs. I mean they have developed pretty nicely. besides you never know what gems we may find, I mean hell T.J. Houshmandzadeh was drafted in the 7th round. He has become a perenial wide receiver. But he will be asking for big bucks and I can’t see the front office spending money on a guy that age. In free agancy we can pick up a decent sized receiver in Devery Henderson from New Orleans. he was not the number one guy with the Saints, but his size (5’11 200lbs) and his speed ( 4.38 in the 40) make him a nice addition to our receiving corps. I mean unless Ernest shows us something more we can pick up Devery and he may work out for us. I know its asking alot considering our QB is not the deep passer that he may be accustomed to, but he runs good routes and avareages 6.8 YAC over his career. Not too bad, but it will open up the offense just a bit more. If we want veteran leadership in the receiving corps for a cheap price there is always Bobby Engram. yeah yeah I know he’s injury prone and he’s on his last leg. But when he’s healthy he puts up decent numbers as he showed in his 2007 campaign. So he has that potnetial, and he knows what he’s doing. And once again, he will be cheap and not put a huge dent on our salary cap, besides Miami is a great place for a twilight tour. And if we want to stay young there is always potential with RFA Hank Baskett in Philly, if Philly is willing to let him go. Size wise he is the same as Ernest (6’4, 220 lbs), he’s average 15.9 yards per chatch over his first 2 years at Philly, and he can play special teams. he is not as fast as Devery (his speed is just 4.49), but with size like that you don’t need to be fast. Is he worth a 3rd rounder, defitnetly. is he worth a second? Maybe. Either way it will give our QB a big target in the end zone kinda like Eli had with Plax (minus the gun shot wound). Those are my three picks for wide receivers in free agency. The whole time I was talking about cheap players and ssaving money for cap reasons, well the one player on the FA market would have to be Nnamdi Asomugha from the Oakland Raiders. hands down. I feel a WR’s come a dime a dozen. And of those dozen 3 are pretty damn good and one is spectacular. The same cannot be said for corners. This guy is a beast and shuts down one whole side of the field. I mean we could use the help on secondary and he is only 27. And we could use a guy like him considering that we will more than likely face some of the NFl’s top receivers next year. Especially if we play the AFC/NFC south. With the likes of Andre Johnson, Steve Smith, Reggie Wayne, Marvin harrison, Marques Colston and Antonio bryant. We could use the help. He would be worth every penny and seems like a stand up guy. Yeah he will break the bank but for a long term deal, and us really not paying anyone on the team except for a few key players, what do we have to lose. If we take away one side of the field for opposing QBs that leaves our LB corps ready to run a muck on the opposing Qb. And sweet will that be. No more time for them to survey the field and launch one on us.
