Unconventional Draft Idea That I Can't Get Out Of My Head
Picture this. Its the second day of the draft, and the Dolphins are about to turn in their 4th round pick. Sitting at home, antsy to hear his cell phone ring is a player who set records nationally, in his conference, and at his school. This player is no big fish in a small pond either. He played and helped beat big time teams in big time situations, and carried his team on his shoulders at times. Furthermore, he is 6'-2", almost 200 lbs, and runs a 4.4 second 40 yard dash.
Why on Earth is he still sitting there in the 4th round then? Because his name is Pat White- the QB from West Virginia, and nobody knows what to do with him. Even though he set the record for most rushing yards by a QB, broke McNabb's record for TDs in the Big East, rushed for 974 yards and 8 TDs, threw for 1842 yards and 21 TDs vs 7 INTs (with almost a 66% completion percetage) and is the only QB to ever lead his school to 4 bowl victories, most teams won't be able to find a place for him. But I think the Dolphins could.
While most "experts" and analysts out there think that the Wildcat Formation is just a gimmick or trick until we find a "real QB" or "real offense" that we are destined to abandon once we have a more complete team. But I would say to them: Says who? Why can't we keep running it? I will admit that it lost some effectiveness as the season went on, and did nothing against the Ravens. But I submit to you that this is because the passing element of the offense was extremely limited. Ronnie Brown is a very good back- but he is not a passer. He had 1 TD, and I believe 1 other completetion this year out of the Wildcat- but omitting the flea flickers back to CP10- every other passing attempt out of the formation either failed or was aborted (and most of those CP10 tosses were wiiiiidddeee open). But that does not mean its dead; it simply means we do not have the optimal personnel to run it. Contrary to popular opinion, the Single Wing offense that the Wildcat is based on was never truly "figured out" or "shut down" a la the Run'n'Shoot vs the zone blitz defense. One of the biggest factors is that it just wasn't viewed as being as fashionable or entertaining as a prolific passing game, and fell out of favor.
So my crazy draft idea is this: While most scouts out there say Pat White will be a project WR at best, who says we can't get some solid production out of him in the mean time?
I'm not suggesting we draft him as a QB, or change our offense to 100% Wildcat plays- but until he can polish his routes and work on catching the ball- why not put him in the Wildcat 5-10 times a game and have a true duel threat that prevents the opposing team from stacking the line of scrimmage and shutting it down? Even if White only puts the ball in the air 2-3 out of say 10 plays he may run, if even ONE is for a successful completion down the field it will force corners and safeties off the line of scrimmage, which would in turn re-open the running lanes that were once so abundant when nobody knew what was comming at them. And when he's not doing that- he should be busy shaping up to be Antwan Radle-El V2.0- which I doubt any of us would complain about right?
And if 4th round sounds to high for you for a crazy experiment, Brian Johnson- the Utah QB who just finished putting a beatdown on Alabama in the Sugar Bowl- will be available most likely in the 7th round or as an UDFA. It would basically cost us nothing but maybe a 10 or 15 thousand dollar signing bonus in that case, and one fewer body in training camp to try it out.
Is there any chance the Dolphins actually try this? Probably not. But hey, what is an offseason without random, unfounded speculation? So what do you all think of my crazy idea?

yea definetly. I think having that dual dimensional type of player is exciting
but that kind of reminds me of a jayson foster type of a guy? (remember him)
but regardless…if we draft him in 4th-5th round..i’ll yell HOOOOOOORAHHHHH!
(not wooohooooooooo…because i scream that when we draft britt )

Yeah
but that’s not quite fair as he was Foster was only 5’-7". White has a much higher ceiling.
He15man^2. . .get ready
yea i kno ..i am all open to having him hear. he is an exciting player that at the very LEAST will give us good depth in the wr position
hell maybe he might even replace john beck at qb if he gets injured who knows.
i think we pull the trigger if its in the 4th-5th round

Excellent thought I have actually had before....def like ur thinking
This is why i LOVE getting more picks….it lets u gamble. Sometimes you get a Maurice Clarett on the gamble…sometimes you get a Devin Hester. Pat White whooped up on college…and he is a freak of nature in open field. I love taking the chance. I DO SAY draft him as a QB. Who are you going to make ur 3rd string? Its usually a joke of a player. Why not have that spot on the roster for an athlete that ALSO plays QB? Draft him..play him as a TOTAL slash type of player…even return punts if he can. Then if u hit gold and he is like a mcnabb…u use him.
Pat White…4th rd…good gamble…i agree
"CP10 doesnt sleep....he waits"
Was afraid to suggest this
But glad somebody brought this up. Granted being a life long WVU fan I couldn’t help but think about Pat getting drafted late by us for situations like this. While he transitioned to a WR could you imagine Defenses looking across and having the same look on their faces N.E. had when we first unveiled it. PRICELESS. Dont think it will happen but I never thought that years later I would get my wish granted and CP10 would end up here(wanted us to draft him as Dan’s successor). Since were on a slight WVU note What do you guys think of Morty Ivy?
Quincey Carter
About midway through the season, I was thinking, that this is probably why we gave Quincey Carter a tryout during the off season (Not the WR spot, more along the lines of what RZ was saying) So maybe this isn’t as far out there as it sounds. I like it…
good point...
but i think the Wildcat wasnt on their minds…really…i dont know what was lol
"CP10 doesnt sleep....he waits"
Actually
after we ran it against NE, I recall Ronnie saying we worked on it in TC, then shelved it for a while, then came back to it after starting 0-2. So that may have been what Quincy Carter’s tryout was all about.
Saying that, I really think it was kind of a message to the rest of the guys, that Parcells could bring in anyone, at any time, to replace anybody.

It's a good idea
it was brought up a while back, but sub Tebow for White. Either way, I think it’d be an interesting idea, except I don’t think Pat White the WR is what we need at that position. I think the Jets do the same thing with Brad Smith, who was a college option QB at Iowa. He plays WR, and ran wildcat plays this year. Pat could be on the roster as a WR, and play QB in spread option wildcat sets, but I don’t think he complements Ginn at all, and he probably won’t be better than Bess or Camarillo as a slot guy. So he’d be competing with London, who’s huge and is a special teams demon.
Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE the idea, but it’s difficult to see how he would fit with our WR’s. We could always just list him as our 3rd QB and dump Beck though…

You are right-
he is not an idea receiver- he would be a tallish possession guy more than likely as he isn’t track star fast. I guess the idea is that you get a maybe a #3 receiver, 3rd string QB, maybe a KR or PR AND Wildcat QB. He’s probably in the game for 15-25 snaps. I could definitely deal with that kind of value from a second day draft pick.
Like I said- 99% chance it never happens. I really am just wondering where all these immensely athletic run first spread QB types like White are going to fit in the NFL. Too talented to forget about, and too unpolished to start right away for most people. It just seems like our offense offers the perfect little niche for them to develop into, while allowing us to extract maximum value for lower round picks b/c nobody knows where to put these great players.
He15man^2. . .get ready
The thing is..
If we can get him in the 5th or 6th, I say go for it, unless there’s somebody there that we think could fill a need ala Donald Thomas. But in 3/4th round range, you can’t get a 15-25 play guy. That guy needs to contribute. Our 3rd round pick last year was a defensive starter. Our 4th rounder was a guard that didn’t work out, but was at a NEED position. I think it all depends on WHERE he’s available. I just have a feeling somebody will draft him higher than we value him.

Just a small point
If listed as a 3rd QB and comes into the game at any time the 1st QB is not able to re-enter the game.
But I am a Huge Rutgers Fan, thought about White being and ultimate Wildcat weapon, however Britt is coming out, the man can play, would love him to stay at RU however would love him on the Phins!
The Patriots Suck
well
the way you get by that is by not taking Pennington off the field in the wildcat.

Good idea
However you can not put the third QB out there at all. Once the third QB comes in the 1st is no longer able to play in the game. I do not believe they are allowed on the same field.
In 2005 Andy Reid had a little problem with this rule. Jeff Garcia was on the Eagles, and listed as the second QB, however as you recall Koy Detmer, was normally the place kicking holder. If he was listed as the 3rd QB and was holding McNabb would not be able to come out. If he was listed as the 2nd than Reid would have to suck up playing Detmer for the time McNabb was on the sideline instead of putting it in Garcia’s hands.
Ultimately Detmer got cut, A.J Feely was the 3rd and the punter held. Good thing cause thats when Garcia led the Eagles to the playoffs.
The Patriots Suck
how many times do u end up needing ur 3rd qb?
dont label him like that…but if ur starter goes down u can make him the backup and change ur thinking
"CP10 doesnt sleep....he waits"
oh
didn’t know that. Thought it only had to do with the first QB coming completely out of the game.
