Pennington
I've seen mixed reviews of Pennington after today's game, so I wanted to sum up what he's meant to us this season, and what he means to us going forward. So here goes..
Pennington's Value to the 2008 Miami Dolphins: Without Pennington, we don't see playoffs. He was EXACTLY what we needed for this season, with a young, still incomplete OL, very few, if any, playmakers in the passing game, and two recovering RB's. He came in, took control of this rebuilding team, and led us to the playoffs in a season when we probably shouldn't have won more than 7 or 8 games. His steady hand and clutch play through the regular season allowed us to develop many different guys in many different positions without worrying about destroying the team chemistry and rhythm.
Versus the Ravens: 2 of his worst games of the year were against Baltimore. Coincidence? Not a chance. Baltimore's defense is phenomenal. They are fast at every position, and nobody on that side of the ball slows up until the whistle. Blaming Pennington because the Raven defense outplayed us isn't accurate. He had a bad game, no doubt, but it was due mostly to the defense he was up against, and we should give credit where credit is due, instead of placing the blame squarely on our guy.
Building the Future: Pennington's presence also allowed us to sit our QB-in-waiting, Chad Henne for an entire season and give him the opportunity to learn from one of the most cerebral QB's in the game today. Chad P has a coaches mind, and he welcomed the chance to mentor a young player. If he's able to teach Henne the type of work ethic that goes into being a successful QB, we'll be in better shape because of it. He is a mainstay in the film room, routinely calls meetings to get on the same page with other members of the offense, and constantly tries to stay a step ahead of his opponent mentally. He may not have the physical tools you drool over in a QB, but Henne does, and if Henne learns the little, mental things involved in preparing for games, he'll be a very, VERY good QB in this league. And Pennington will have a hand in his development.
What He Brings to the Table: So listen, we all know that Pennington isn't a fireballer, he's not dropping 60 yard bombs, and he's not a big, strong, athletic specimen at the QB position. What he is, however, is one of the smartest and most well-prepared players in the league. He, alongside with Coach Sparano and his staff, instilled a hard-working attitude and responsibility on a team that was desperate for a leader during the preseason.
Moving Forward: Chad Pennington, I believe, will finish his career in Miami. His contract will be extended for another couple years, at a fair salary that reflects his value to this team not only for the upcoming season, but as an eventual veteran backup for Henne. I don't believe we will break the bank for him, and I don't believe he'll leave for another team. As far as next season, I think it will be an open competition between him and Henne, and the best QB for the job will play. That's Sparano's style: no BS, no politics, best player plays. And I have no doubt that if Henne outplays Pennington and earns the job, that Chad the Elder will do everything he possibly can to help Chad the Younger succeed and lead this team to victory week in and week out.

that’s rough. the tickets didn’t scan? They shouldn’t have checked anything unless the tix didn’t scan, in which case they weren’t legit.

It was incredible. And I was happy to see 90% of the crowd looked like they hung around to the very end to support the Dolphins.

the crowd was AMAZING
so jacked up…..70,000 phins fans….4500 ravens prob. very cool fans overall…but the team let us down this week. after looking over the tape…CP10 really messed it up himself. he made 3 throws u just cant make…when ed reed returned that punt….it was a game changer. u know me ….i love cp10….but this was on him.
when the playoffs come….u gotta run the ball. we had a patched up line….and we had no chance. that in reality is what forced 4 picks….forcefull throws cuz we cant run.
DRAFT OR SIGN A OLINE BEAST. and cut Will Allen…im sick of him..he looks pretty…and covers once every 5 games. if we dont play the bills….will allen keeps in his diamond earings and plays like shit. Goodman held his own…but Allen got beat all game long by a overaged hurt WR
Did u notice Crowder or Roth today? i didnt…replace or bench…we need to do better than them realistically if we wanna wina super bowl. Joey stopped playing 3 weeks ago….i watched him all game…he took off prob 20 plays…like he ran str8 and if it wasnt wide open he just got swallowed and stopped….not a negative thing…just a fact.

I dont think u are talking about the defense but
if somebody kept us in the game, it was the D. Just 9 completions by Flacco, no big plays (just 1). And then we are trailing by 17 points with 17 minutes to go, and about to score and get intercepted in the redzone. You would think this is the end but no that defense instead of jumping Henning and Chad on the sideline (nobody would´ve said anything) they went back to the field and got 2 straight 3 and outs. So this game is not on them, but on an offense, if u can call them that, u could ironically, that managed to gave up more points than they scored.

This is the most somber I have seen you in my life
Chad didn’t have much to work with
He was throwing crap because the D of the Ravens was too much for our line

I agree with Rzayo on this
Pennington threw into double coverage on most of his picks. The deep one to Ginn was almost laughable. Had Ginn not tripped, it would have been the same result because the ball had NO ummph on it and was off target. Our O-line went against one of the best defenses in the NFL, you saw the results. Granted we have some on IR, but we still need to fix that if we are going to compete with the likes of the Ravens D. We got to get the best, to beat the best.

Great write up Nicky
Chad and his ‘well preparedness’ have kinda taken the place of Zach this season, for me at least….. Mr. Consistancy … i hope he’s here a very long time, maybe he could end up coaching w/ Sporano someday… enough cannot be said about his value to this team this year and beyond.

I think he'll definitely catch on as a coach once he hangs his cleats up.
I don’t know if there’s a precedent for that sort of thing, but I could see him retiring and just hanging on here as the QB coach. He pretty much is a coach on this squad already. Right now, the QB coach is David Lee correct? I see him stepping into Henning’s position after ole’ Dan steps aside, and Pennington could fill into Lee’s position pretty seamlessly.

this is exactly the scenario I would like to see happen here. David Lee is a bright, innovative offensive mind, and Chad would be the ultimate QB coach. You can never underestimate the value of having continuity in the coaching staff. I believe that is what has stunted Jason Campbell with the Redskins and basically ended the career of Alex Smith in San Fran.

I’m hoping Pasqualoni stays around, I’ve heard he may be a candidate for a couple HC positions…
glad to hear Parcells is sticking around.. I think that will entice not only FA’s to take a slightly lesser deal to come to a team with a proven winner pulling the strings, but also keep asst. coaches around because they know the front office has their backs. Job security is a wonderful thing in the NFL.

Agree and Disagree
Pennington was indeed exactly what this team needed this year. No doubt about it. He took them way, waaaay farther than I ever thought they’d get. He has played heady football all season. And I think he will make a good coach someday, if that’s what he wants to do.
OTOH, I disagree that his INTs today were all just great Ravens defense. He flat threw the ball up for grabs on some of them, when the smart thing to do was throw it away or, at worst, eat it. It didn’t help that he had D-linemen all over him most of the day. Nonetheless, taking a sack is still better than turning it over. Today, he didn’t play heady football.
I don’t think he’ll finish his career with Miami, either. If he’s still our starting QB after next season, it’ll be because something has gone terribly wrong. He’s a gutty guy and I love him for it and for what he’s done this season, but by 2010, we’d better have somebody better ready to play, or we’ll be taking a huge step back in our rebuilding. I think he’ll still see himself as a starter, though, and will still be able to get a starting job somewhere, so that’s where he’ll go. As he should. If he can start somewhere, he should go start. But, God willing, that place won’t be Miami by 2010.

Well posted
extend his contract a couple of more years? How long of the 3 years will he be starting? I’m sure they won’t keep Henne on the bench 3 years.
I agree with urbino, most have grown attached to Pennington because of his storybook year, but I don’t think he will finish his career in Miami. Nor do I think he should.
I want the Dolphins to win, and I don’t care who is playing to help them win. When a guy throws 4 ints in 2 qtrs he is hurting my team and maybe needs to sit a series. Not 1 guy is above the team. NOT ONE.

My personal opinion
Nice year Mr. Pennington. great story, your a wonderful guy. But we are a rebuilding team starting a new foundation and we need to continue down that road. Please stay on in a backup role and mentor Mr. Henne.

what I said was keep him on the team. Not keep him as the starter. I think he’s just as valuable in the locker room as a backup as he is as a starter.

there are a lot of cheerleaders around who don’t want to look at the reality that a pennington QB’ed team will only take the team so far… and he had a great season, but it’s time for the team to transition to a weapon at QB and get a way from someone who isn’t suppose to lose it.

what do the remaining 8 playoff teams have…. a QB who can throw a 25 yard out, and a qb who can stretch the defense.
until miami upgrades the QB position, they will not beat good defenses on a regular basis…. and what is most sad about this game
is that miami’s offense was clearly over matched against baltimore’s defense and baltimore’s defense is at best the 3rd in the pecking order of the remaining teams….
how ugly would this game have been had miami had to travel to baltimore or say pitt or even tenn.

Thanks, westy.
You know, part of my brain keeps whispering, “OTOH, there’s Trent Dilfer.” But that was an extremely atypical situation. It’s certainly not one the Ravens intentionally put together. Dilfer was just the best they could do at QB at the time. And, given their absolute dominance on defense, he was just enough.
Still, Dilfer wasn’t their plan. He wasn’t their goal. He wasn’t what they really wanted. There’s no reason keeping Penny at QB should be our goal, either. It’s not what we should be planning for our future. If he’s the best we can do, then so be it. We could certainly do a lot worse. But let’s shoot for someone better.

exactly -
which is the biggest dissappointment of this season… that the team had to opportunity to address their long term QB issue and chose the short term glory of a caretaker… I know everyone says you park a QB for 10 or so years on the bench and he’ll be K Collins and lead the phins to the superbowl once he’s stewed enough, but what if Henne or Beck arent the answer… then where is the franchise?? for 15 seconds of glory they will have set the franchise back years with yet another caretaker…
as to dilfer, well b-neckville did have a bruising running game to do with that sick defense… so what was dilfer averaging 12-15 attempts per game… if that wasn’t some weird anomaly, then we should expect detroit to win 12 next year…

One thing I noticed-
Pennington took some HUGE hits today. I got the feeling throughout the game that he might have gotten his bell rung and that is why he tossed up some of those Farve-like balls. I would not be surprised at all to learn he had a concussion or something.
Also- WTF happened to our tight ends in this game? I didn’t here Martin or Fasano’s name once this whole game that I can remember. I know there were quite a few 2 and even some 3 TE sets but I didn’t notice much passing going to them- they were our bread and butter all year- anybody know what happened?

As far as Pennington's play today
I wasn’t happy with it AT ALL. The deep ball to Ginn that was picked and run back was a bad decision. Cobbs was open underneath, and Pennington forced it. On the first one, Ginn came open late, and Pennington let it fly just before he got rocked. The ball sailed high. On Reed’s second pick, he started on the complete other side of the field (like, near the numbers) and broke on the snap. Pennington hit 2 steps and let the ball go, and Reed never broke stride.
Baltimore’s defensive players, and their scheme, forced some bad throws and bad decisions. I’m not excusing Pennington for these mistakes, or saying he gets a free pass because Baltimore is so good, but we have to give that D some credit instead of laying all the blame on Chad. They’ve made just about every QB they’ve faced look bad, so we really can’t expect ours to look great.

AS disappointed as i was with Pennington's play today...
He’s a great QB and a great fit with what we have going here.
I’m glad he’s a Dolphin and am expecting big things from him and this team. He’s a great influence on Henne, he’s a great influence on our WR’s, and he’s a great player.
I may have been pissed off today, but i’m not gonna toss CP10 under the bus.

Ya know what?....
every player on this roster is (and should be) thinking about how they need to get to the next level in Miami. The front office already is. I believe all of the cute code names (e.g. CP10, Peazy, etc.) are pondering this exact question. This is not an environment built upon patience.

I haven't read anything yet..but the first line..."mixed reviews"....
and before I even continue to read the rest…
we owe this whole incredible season to that man…it was the best personnel move we’ve made in years (thanks New York)…and I don’t think this could have turned out any better then it did…this season was a wild ride that I wouldn’t change a bit of.. sure we lost today..and in the most surprising fasion.. 5 turnovers for the best team in that category..but WE WENT OUT WITH OUR GUNS ‘A BLAZIN’ !!
We have absolutely nothing to be upset about (accept the temporary sting of this defeat)..and we should hold our heads high and thank our lucky stars for Chad.. I’d go to war with that guy (figuratively speaking)…and it appears the rest of the team felt the same way.
Thanks for everything in 2008 Mr. Pennington…and the little bit in ’09…we owe you a lot.. and a lot of others on the team too, not to slight the rest of the players..
It’s been great and I think we still have not yet seen the best…from Chad and from THIS team.
THanks boyz for an incredible year!

I can’t wait until next year! Chad is the PERFECT person to keep this thing going…EXACTLY what we need to keep the solid foundation to build on… and as long as he’s healthy and keeps his head (which he will), he’ll be around next season and likely a few more after that..and there is no reason he shouldn’t! We WILL build the TEAM AROUND HIM….you watch! and I can’t think of anything better

Dude, I just wanted to sum up what you have meant to me. I am a Dolphins fan from 71-72 when I was 5-6 and lived in Kentucky. I never had (many, or any truly devoted) fins fans from before. I found this blog last year, and it, and its family, are a constant in my life now. You even directed me to the other bedrock blog, Finsnation (yes, I am that immature).
I love this place every minute. It has enhanced my love of everything Dolphins. God, Allah, Jahweh, or just life bless you and this world we Phinsiders all love Matty.

Everybody needs to chill out
CP 10 is the reason we are complaining about our playoff run and not going 4-12. Penny should start two two more years and keep us competitive while the trifecta builds this team. At that time we should have both lines build up and have some play makers at that point. Then you let Henne loose with a good team with Penny backing him up just in case.
This is not a 1 year turn around. Next year we have a very difficult schedule, which will give the team good experience moving forward. If you think this game is on Penny you are crazy. We have a strong LT and a decent center. All the other guys on the line got moved by Oakland and Kansas City. Put Manning behind that line with out Harrison, Wayne, Clark, and Gonzales and see how he does.
Put things in perspective and realize we are on the right track.

the game plan was freaking disastrous, seriously bad, trying to run to the outside? long passes?? giving up the run so early? no screens no play action no use at all of the TE, not going for it on that 4th and goal when we were in the same situation that first game we played against them and went for 3 and clearly saw what happened for not scoring 7?
Also we hadn´t been talking about Camarillo for a while but heck did we miss him. We have the worse Wr´s corpse of the NFL by far, not being negative just objective. I mean, Brandon London? Devone Bess?? im trying to think of someone else but I even think that was it. I would trade them both for Mason when he was out of high school. You can sometimes say “We became one dimensional because they took out the run” or the pass. But today they took out the run, then the pass and we were still one dimensional: “turnover machine”. You just cant expect to beat this good a defense with 1. no running game. 2. no offensive line. 3.Not even a #2 caliber WR. 4. No game plan whatsoever 5.No capacity of stretching the defense. Its sad and frustrating to say it but this was just a recipe for disaster. Just being objective. Love this team´s heart though.

umm
weren’t we talking about Bess as a good WR just last week? I think you may need to step back for a minute, put the ‘objective’ glasses on for the entire season, and then state your piece. Today we looked bad, but losing a game in the playoffs doesn’t make our entire team suck. cmon now.

it doesnt man but don´t expect to beat Baltimore with a 5"9 undrafted free agent
and a practice squad superbowl champion. Im the first guy to stand up for this team and didn´t leave my seat until the game finished and more. Dont get it wrong, im not trashing the team, im trashing me and us for putting this on Chad when we can clearly see what he was working with. Ted freaking Ginn?? I´d take Ryan Leaf as 3rd string Qb over him anyday of the weak. Just frustrated thats all

blatant
to sum up blatantly.. pennington is not a qb that can beat a great D, to win the big games in this league, u need one of those qbs.

You never know how things turn out
How do we deal with a tough schedule? by getting better.

thank you "08" dolphins
as a fan it was the BEST season in at LEAST 10yrs to watch!
sorry to tell you negative people, monday morning qb’s and experts out there in fin land but without an o-line to give a qb time to work, plays to develop even brady could’nt help us! pissed me off to watch the ravens DOMINATE our o-line and cp10 struggle to make something happen…but still a hell of a year…can’t wait for next season…GO PHINS>>

first day no doubt. I just hope we don’t have to hear about him in EVERY SINGLE POST, because that will get incredibly annoying.

Maybe, but not really.
He started fading from the scene not long after the Trifecta arrived, and then completely disappeared. For a while there, I honestly wasn’t even sure if he was still on the payroll.
