Dolphins vs Ravens Post Game Thread
All good things must come to an end. The Dolphins had a truly improbable season. To me, watching a playoff game with our Dolphins in it was just icing on the cake.
So keep this post relatively clean. Don't go crazy.
Above all, stay classy. Any trolls come in, just ignore them.
And remember: MIAMI DOLPHINS: 2008 AFC EAST CHAMPIONS!!
No loss can take that away!

one play away from turning this game around….that dumb gimmick when we were on our heals killed you..i hate when coaches go cute when the momentum is there.
by raven on Jan 4, 2009 4:02 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
raven! it was NOT a gimmick!
That SAME play was run again the propellers and gave us a TD!
If you look at the re-play, that would be a TD if the fumble didn’t happen. Ginn was wide open for that reverse, but..
The only thing i still asquing myself is, why we didn’t make the wildcat passing play, thta would kill you guys!, again but…

Sad
But still not depressed. Wish we could have kept going, but nothing changes the fact that we were in the playoffs while the Jets and Pats sat at home. Nothing takes away the AFC East Championship. Nothing takes away Mission 4W being completed. Nothing takes away moving the hyphen.
Now, we look forward to the amazing moves that I know the Trifecta will do this offseason.
And, least but not least, Mr. Huizenga, thank you for everything you have done for us. I’m sorry to see you sell the team.

Flacco was operating with 1/3 of field while he was learning (3 game rookie) and we still barely lost to the Titans..they fear us!
by raven on Jan 4, 2009 4:03 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
I’m not sure that “playoffs are different” is what the Dolphins learned today. The perspective from outside of Miami seems to be that you guys just weren’t quite ready for the playoffs, which is not meant as an insult by any stretch of the imagination. A turnaround from one win to a Superbowl championship really just boggles the mind. The good news is that the Dolphins have a great core of competitive players around which to build. An off-season spent building upon what you guys already have is almost guaranteed to be a recipe for success.
As for the Titans, they didn’t have great momentum going into the post-season, and they’ll have had two weeks to stew over it by the time we play them. Flacco has become a more complete QB in the intervening time, our defense has become even more dominant and opportunistic, and they had to eke out a win in overtime. Obviously, Any Given Sunday comes into effect next weekend, but I love our chances.
by Ampallang on Jan 4, 2009 6:44 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
agreed
Although, I think you meant a division championship.
I’m not so sure I agree about your game with the Titans. One thing’s for sure: whoever comes out of that game is going to look like a bunch of survivors of a trainwreck.
by urbino on Jan 4, 2009 6:50 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
The massive turnaround from one win to division champion is incredible. A turnaround from one win to Superbowl champion literally boggles the mind. I’m just saying that from last to first is just a little too much, even for Bill Parcells.

Flaco, is NOT a good QB
BTW! you might win the SB, but will NOT be by Flaco

by Aleta on Jan 4, 2009 6:49 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I’ll have to take issue with that. He may not be a Peyton Manning (yet!), but Flacco’s exactly what our team needs behind center. He was our third string QB coming into the season and played in a tiny Delaware college just months ago; he had no significant reps with the starters before Week 1. Joe had seven of his 12 interceptions and the majority of his fumbles in the first five games. Since then, he’s had a Pennington-like five interceptions over eleven games, along with a great QB rating for a rookie.
Add in his rocket arm, amazing composure, and the first playoff road win for a rookie ever, and he’s starting to look pretty reliable — reliable like Trent Dilfer in our last Superbowl appearance. As I said: Pennington-like. You did have faith in Pennington over the season, didn’t you? If you have evidence to the contrary, I’d love to hear it.

Keep your new and young Dilfer!
Sorry for saying that he was NOT the reason, for you guys, to be in the playoff

Should be interesting with the two of us next year. If you get Brady back or with Cassel in year #2 as the starter vs. us having some confidence now. AFC East could be fun again.

A fairly substantiated rumor is...
…we’re franchising Cassel. It’ll cost us 14.5M, but it’s a worthwhile insurance policy, IMO.

Yeah, I've been hearing those
That’s an expensive insurance policy…especially when it means he will make more than Brady.
But, you don’t really have a choice, either. Especially if Brady does have to have surgery and be out for another year.

Look at Chads season like this
he was throwing to a lot of inexperienced guys behind a relatively new line for new coaches in a new organization. Next season, we tweak, adjust and have stability. Thats good for everyone. Plus we now have playoff experience under our belt.
I think Chad can have even more success next year.

And I am 100% sure that if the Dolphins won, it would be the most rude and obnoxious comments ever thrown at our blog. There were a select few from this blog that were very ignorant and took our opinions the wrong way.
But anywho, Pennington, comeback player of the year couldnt come back. 4 interceptions. Then another fumble. 5 Turnovers. That is more than a third that you guys gave up all season! But anyway
You guys had a great season, great storyline. Took the Pats out. Took Favre out. Young and optimistic team, you guys will have a good future, just be afraid of the Ravens.

I'm not trying to be rude
but coming onto the Phinsider and stating your opinion and being rude and completely narrow minded about any conversation is not what we as fans want here on the Phinsider.
We do get out of control sometimes but it is usually a warranted attack. You call a select few of us ignorant but you come over here reeking of arrogance. Cool you beat us, I’ll give that to you and you played a great game. I’m not going to make excuses or throw out any “what if’s”.
I still believe the Dolphins are a good enough team to beat the Ravens, but we weren’t today. It’s about any given Sunday and today was yours.
We have no reason to fear the Ravens, we are a young and inexperienced team that won the AFC east. We have nothing but upside.
But again, congrats on the win today, keep your arrogance on your blog. You should be celebrating the win with your fellow fans, not on the Phinsider stating that we should be afraid of the Ravens.
Goodluck against the Chargers, I’ll be pulling for you.

Thanks, rangerjae, both for the complement and for your contributions over at the Baltimore Beatdown. You’ve definitely been a diamond in the Miami rough over on our side of SBNation.
As I’ve said over there, the Dolphins have had an amazing season, and I hope that they continue to progress through the off-season and into next season. Their division will be just as tough next year, especially with Tom Brady recuperated and a new coaching staff for the Jets, but I think you guys will do well, especially if Parcells sticks around. They definitely have in place the core of a competitive team.
Good game today, and hope to see the Dolphins in the post-season next year.

I know that English isn’t your first language, but what part of my post is BS? That the Dolphins had a good season? That they’ll be contenders next year? That they have a great core of players? That Bill Parcells is the man? If you take issue with any of that, then maybe you don’t want to see the Dolphins win a Superbowl.
Maybe you should pop a Paxil and chillax. And if contending for a Superbowl championship is a problem, I’ll gladly deal with it.

I'm 100% sure
that you’re a completely classless prick. Check every blog of every team we’ve beaten this season. You won’t find one rude or obnoxious comment. Check all the teams we lost to. Nothing but class. Don’t come in here and talk about our ignorance when you failed to argue a point all week long. Do me a favor and spare the backhanded compliments. There’s a reason teams that you beat throw rude comments at your blog, because you guys clearly don’t handle yourselves with class or dignity, win or lose. I’m ashamed that you and I are fans of the same sport, because you’re everything that’s wrong with fanhood in the NFL.
I actually like the Ravens, and I like Ed Reed, but you make it real hard for me to wish them luck in the next round. You’re a world-class asshole, and you don’t deserve any respect from me.
Other than Mr. Malor, good game to the Ravens and good luck in Tennessee. I’m sorry that you have to deal with him as your fan.

Wow, that's just not right
you must not have read the glut of rude and personal comments directed at our fans for just stating their opinions backed up by facts on this site as well as our own. There’s no reason we can’t visit here and trade some good natured trash talking without being warned or worse, get hit with all the personal attacks similar to the Browns site, but not at all like we experienced at any other teams’ site. No Ravens fans are trolling here, as the ones who have returned have not gloated, but instead have been classy enough to congratulate and wish you luck in the future. You would look a lot better doing the same.

check your blog
I already congratulated you guys and wished you luck. Him coming here and saying he’s 100% sure that we would’ve been rude and obnoxious if we won is ridiculous, because we don’t have any sort of track record with that kind of behavior. I read quite a few rude and classless comments from your fans as well as ours, but to come in here AFTER THE GAME and call us ignorant and talk about how we don’t win with class is exactly what he’s accusing us of. I have no ill will towards anyone post-game. All the trash-talking during the week is just that, trash-talk. You can check out any comment I’ve made post-game on an opposing blog, it’s always a classy ‘good game’ whether the Dolphins win or lose.
I hope you enjoyed the game, and I hope you guys continue playing well into the playoffs. I think EReed deserves a ring, and I’d like to see him, above anyone else left in the playoffs, win one.

I think Mr MaLoR is probably right. The vast majority of the people I’ve seen over here at the Phinsider have been respectful and optimistic about the future. That’s about the best you can expect after losing a tough game in the first round of the playoffs. I know because it happened to the Ravens just two season ago. But it’s not the people over here to whom he’s referring.
Most of the Miami fans visiting the Beatdown have been pretty rude, though, and there’s no reason for Mr MaLoR to expect a Dolphins win to mitigate that at all; in fact, these people seem to me like the kind of fan to come over and try to rub our faces in it. In all likelihood, it would have gotten even worse. It’s all purely speculation, but I think it’s a fair assessment based on the empirical evidence from the course of the week.
You said to check all your post-game replies, win or loss, and I believe you; but he’s not talking about you. Check all our replies. I’ve seen nothing but respect for the team, here or at the Beatdown. And at least at the Phinsider, lots of respect to the posters here. But the majority of the people posting over at the Beatdown recently just don’t deserve that same respect, and it shows in our posts over there. These are the people he’s talking about. They talked shit about us, our blog, and our team, and you’ve conveniently forgotten to mention any of that.
Some of the people coming over to our blog have been bragging about how much more popular the Phinsider is than the Beatdown. But when you get so many people together, you’re bound to pick up a few bad eggs along the way. It’s the Law of Averages and human nature.

that was a tough way to go out. Its hard to keep it in perspective that we were expected to only win maybe 4-5 games ( I predicted 8-8). What disappointed me most was the lack of a pass rush without a blitz. 0 sacks???? Hopefully we can pick up a stud in the off season, maybe a receiver, and I think we can make a good run next year.
Thank you dolphins for a great season that was far more entertaining and rewarding than it had any right to be.

Parcells, Sparano, et al
I trust this front office and coaching staff to make smart improvements and add quality players this offseason. New England’s dominance of the AFC East is over, the Jets are going to be in disarray, and Buffalo will continue to be mediocre. This season marked the beginning of a great run for the Phins, in my opinion.

Surprised
Happy we won the division, wished this game could’ve been closer and not so sloppy. I also wished for a win, still happy, but it sucks to lose especially since all the “experts” turned out to be right, and to have to wait until next year to find out if we can improve. Hopefully we get a dynamic WR in the offseason and some more upgrades on D. We’ll need it to compete with the NFC South, AFC South, Pittsburgh, New England and SD. Hopefully Parcells sticks around to do it.

This is a season
that you guys will build on. The Ravens were able to make the Dolphins one dimensional and force Chad to throw the ball too much. But with a front office consisting of Parcells…this season sure as hell wasn’t a fluke and you guys will only get better in the off season. With the Pats wondering when Brady will ever get healthy (last I heard it wasn’t looking good) I can see you guys winning the division again next year. It still blows my mind what your organization has been able to accomplished after last year. As a Ravens fan, I came into this game really worried that the Dolphins could pull the upset.

God it was nice to be playing in January
The Ravens played great football, I hope they go all the way so at least the team that beat us beat everyone. Now the fun of watching the 3 gurus filling in the gaps and making this team better. I’m proud of the guts that The Dolphins played with this year. 11 and 5, who would of thunk it? Next year we will have more talent to go along with our winning attitude. Can’t wait for the draft.

Well a disappointing end to a great season
Gents, at the end of last season I never would have thought that we would end up in the playoffs.
Great work by a great team, something to build upon and a future thats looking pretty bright.
I’m gutted that we couldn’t get past the first game, but it was a game too far and we did well to get here.
I hope to see everyone around for the end of the post season and then the off season, this blog has really picked up in the second half of the regular season.
Here’s looking forward to great 2009.

OH WELL.........
That one hurt……As much as I love CP10 this game is the reason why I hope Henne wins the job next yr. When you play a tough, fast playmaking Defense his arm shows his limits. It stays in the air too long, guys look like they were open for a second once he tries to put some mustard on it he lost his accuracy……oh well i won’t get in it now……I just want to thank the Dolphin Organization for the great ride they took us on this season and looking forward to the offseason to see what the FO has in store for us in 09……..

Very Satisfying Season
For a guy who said last summer that I’d be thrilled — THRILLED — with a 5-win season, this season has been almost mythical. This team has come a long, looooong way. It’s a team again.
So. With that said. Here’s the top few thoughts in my head right now:
1. We still need to upgrade the O-line, especially at right tackle.
2. One spot we don’t need to upgrade is left tackle. Jake Long is quicker getting off the line and into his stance than anybody I’ve ever seen. He’s off the line and in blocking position before anybody else on either side of the line is even out of their crouch. It’s just astonishing. Another area I’m happy with is the defensive front 7.
3. Wide receiver. We clearly don’t have a #1 wideout. Gotta get one. But we knew that coming out of last year’s off-season. We had a ton of holes to fill, and we had to start with the foundational positions along the lines; wide receiver could wait till next year. It was exactly the right thing to do. But now it’s next year. We also need more depth.
4. QB. This isn’t going to be popular. I love the guy, but I don’t see Penny moving this team forward next season. He had a great season, and he was just the medicine this team needed this year. Next season, we need to improve. That may not be possible. He may still be the best available option next season. If so, that’s okay, but we need to adjust our expectations down.
5. Secondary. We still look confused in the secondary too often. Out of position too often. Maybe these guys can be coached up to do better, but we may have to add a true shutdown corner or a great safety, a la Ed Reed.
6. The truth is, we won a lot this year with smoke, mirrors, and a 1-15 team’s schedule. Smoke and mirrors won’t beat a true playoff defense. The Ravens proved that twice. If we have to do that again next season, I think we’ll win fewer games than this year. We’ve got to be able to actually beat defenses. We did it occasionally this year, but we’ve got to be able to do it reliably and on a regular basis.
Hope that doesn’t sound too negative. I’m just trying to take a realistic look at how we take the next step next season. And, like I said, I couldn’t be more happy with this season. Great, GREAT job by all concerned.

Well posted
I agree with everything.
I want the Dolphins to win, and I don’t care who is playing to help them win. When a guy throws 4 ints in 2 qtrs he is hurting my team and maybe needs to sit a series. Not 1 guy is above the team. NOT ONE.

I agree with all that...
except that I would add that our quarterback play might actually improve with a years work with the recievers and a O-line that’s not patched together like ours was for the whole season. Smiley, Donald Thomas, and the off-season upgrades are gonna make CP10 even better next year.
You have to play this game like somebody just hit your mother with a two-by-four.

CP10
I dunno, snook. It looks to me like Chad did everything he’s capable of doing, this season. That is, even if we improve the O-line and the receiver corps, I don’t think Chad could really take full advantage of it. The throws he can make, he’s making now.

I wanna see Henne
I agree with you, we saw the very best of Pennington this year. Everytime Pennington threw one his floaters up I was scared Reed was just gonna fly up and snatch it before it finally got to the receiver.

I don't know if he's ready.
That’s why I said Pennington may be the best available option next year. It’ll be interesting to see how that develops this off-season.

Ready?
Did you see Rayn and Flacco this year and they started out the gate. Henne now had a chance to sit a year and see how things go and how to prepare himself after seeing Chad. We’ll never know if he is ready or not unless he plays.

I did see them.
I also saw John Beck last year. And Alex Smith and JaMarcus Russell and . . .
Henne may be head and shoulders better than all those guys, and still not be ready. Sparano, etc., will make that evaluation, and I’ll trust them. And if they don’t think he’s ready, Pennington is a much better option than overpaying for a free agent on the backside of his career, as we’ve done too often in the past. That’s all I meant.

I agree with you
we have Pennington under contract for next year. And I’m trusting Sparano and company too.
I’m just not wanting everyone to fall in love with this mythical year and forget we’re rebuilding and evenutally gonna have to take that step back before we take those 2/3 steps foward.

I can get behind that.
The concern, I think, is that when we invest in that one step back, it doesn’t turn into 3, 4, or 5 steps back.
I’m sure nobody remembers this, but last year, when we traded Chambers, I was excited. It was a step back, but a step back that said (to me, anyway) that we had finally gotten serious about rebuilding for the future. I was saying how happy I was because, finally, we could stop being a 9-6 or 8-7 team every year, take the hit, and work at becoming truly good down the road.
I’m all for being as bad as you need to be to get really good down the road. That’s sort of my point. If Henne is the guy who’s going to get us to really good, let’s take another year to get him geared up, if that’s what it takes.

Wow!! What a season!
Good fun gettin to know all our new players. Loved all the no-names gettin it done (Camarillo, Bess, Cobbs, Politte, etc. etc) Wow, what fun to look forward to next year (and Parcells stays, too. Yeah!!).
Good fun gettin to know you guys, too! I’m sure we’ll talk before the draft.
Great site, Matty. Thanks for all you put into it!

Year in review
Great results overall. We overachieved which is exactly what you want out of your team. I know we all wanted to dream, but we knew the Ravens were a better team. Who would have put money though that if one of the QB’s threw 4 picks it would have been Penny?!
Positives: We found some good playmakers in Cobbs and Polite in the run game and kickoffs. We did a great job all year of not turning the ball over until today. We have found an anchor LT in Long. We appear to have a great RG in Donald Thomas. Smiley should be a solid player next to Long for a couple more years. Davone Bess is a great surprise as is Camarillo. Both should be solid receivers for years. Carpenter is a good kicker and saved us money. Joey Porters use was better and he was great for 2/3rds of the season. The wildcat gives most teams a lot of trouble and is a great threat. Bell played well all year.
Negatives: We really can’t run the ball consistently and I am not sure what happened to Ronnie and Ricky but they just don’t really break plays. We don’t seem to run block well at all, but we did lose two key guys to injury. We are hot and cold against the run. It is funny how we can be so extreme. We do an absolute horrible job defending against the shorter passes. People are wide open all the time. We have no secondary head hunter and playmaker to make plays like reed made today. Our defense was labeled as really good all year, but this bend don’t break garbage was most often against bad teams. Teams consistently marched up and down the field on us. This needs to stop. We can’t have our D out there that long.
Needs in the offseason:
More depth on both lines. We need a RT and some huge run blocking lineman. We need someone besides Ferguson on the defensive line as well.
A true big #1 wide receiver. Someone who can physically dominate their defender and extend drives. Ginn should be a #2 at best along with Camarillo and Bess.
Big hitting safety who can pick off passes. We actually need a few big play guys in the secondary because Bell and Will Allen are our only really good guys with Goodman not too far behind.
Fact is we weren’t as good as our record, but what a ride! I would focus on the lines and secondary playmakers. Then I would target the WR. The nice thing though is that we have guys who are the best looking for them, and a lot less holes than the start of this season. I can’t wait for next year to see what we can do!

Read the title...
Number one that is why I labeled it “year” in review not “today’s game” in review.
Number two they did not play Great defense today. They gave up 151 yds rushing at 4.6 a carry. They did not pick the ball off one time even with a couple “should have been” opportunities. They let the Ravens quite a few times march up the field on them at will. I would say they did a decent job defensively today, but by no means great. Your rationale behind our D doing well today was the offense was bad?! Not really a ringing endorsement…
The Ravens had a great defense today. We were okay. Considering we were 1-15 last year and gave up two consistent all-stars and defensive leaders, we did a decent job. If you think that defense is great or a superbowl level defense then you have absolutely no idea then. We are 4-5 big playmakers away from being a great defense. Fortunately we have management who knows what to look for and we will improve.
This was a very positive year with much to look forward to next year. We got the most out of our talent. Stop trying to make my comments into something they were not.

The defense was put in bad position all game long
with the turnovers. There’s no way I put this game squarely on their shoulders.

Who is putting it square on their shoulders?!
I have no idea whether you guys are just choosing to take the tangent you are on or are just having a problem reading through the tears, but that isn’t at all what my post was about. I said for the ENTIRE YEAR our defense has been labeled better than it actually is. There have been stretches in games and in the season where they have been very good. Most of the time just solid. We have a lot of issues that need to be resolved. How about the fact that we didn’t sack Flacco ONE TIME today?! Joey Porter is the only reasonable pass rusher we have and now that they have been double and triple teaming the guy he can’t do a thing. Does that sound like a trait of a GREAT defense?!
Come on guys. Know what you are talking about and address someone’s actual post instead of just making crap up and twisting what people say.
The problem today came down to three big things:
4 picks by Chad. Horrible decisions under pressure you wouldn’t expect out of him.
Bad run defense giving them yards after poor tackling attempts.
No Pass pressure consistently which would have resulted in picks by Flacco.
Most importantly though was Chad losing that game for us. If he doesn’t throw those picks we are in that game. I can see one or two, but by 4 he should have been throwing the ball away.

relax bro
I said one sentence. All I said was that the defense wasn’t the only one’s at fault today. I wasn’t responding to your post before that, because there really wasn’t much that I disagreed with. All I said was that the defense was put in bad position all game long, so the game can’t be placed squarely on their shoulders.
Come on guys. Know what you are talking about and address someone’s actual post instead of just making crap up and twisting what people say.
you seriously need to step back and take a deep breath, because there was no “making crap up” or “twisting what people say” in my big whole one sentence.

You hit reply in my post , so if it was a general comment it wouldn’t have been in that line, however the majority of my post was directed at Aleta who is obviously on something if he thinks our D played great today. They were decent at best. His was twisting of what I said, not yours.

A little bitterness...
Not sure why you are pissed at me. You were the one that interjected into my post that we shouldn’t put this all on the D’s shoulders. I never said that and pointed it out. I wasn’t bagging on you. I was just clarifying my point.

If you still think the D played great in that game...
Then you really must be on something. The only great D we saw in that game was wearing purple. I sure hope Parcells isn’t sitting there fooling himself into thinking we have a great D. I’m pretty sure he isn’t and knows what we need fortunately.

How the fock was this the defense fault??? goddamnit
the offense gave up 14 points, the last 7 didnt even count, trash time, so basically the defense gave up 6 points, in 2fg´s while keeping Flacco at 9 completions (34%) and keeping us in the game while we were trying the comeback with 2 straight 3 and outs. Don´t fuck with me like that. We were lucky they jumped back to the field after the 3rd interception. Goddamn it.

It was Penny's fault for about 90% of it
But, the defense wasn’t more than okay. Had Penny played reasonable then we would have been in the game, but the D didn’t really help a whole lot. They weren’t bad, but they sure weren’t more than okay.
