Dolphins vs Ravens: Prediction Time!

It's time for our first (and hopefully not only) post-season edition of "Prediction Time."  Below are a random sampling of "expert" picks:

Chris Mortensen - Ravens Jay Novacek - Ravens
Tom Jackson - Ravens Pete Prisco - Ravens
Mike Ditka - Dolphins Harmon Forecast - Ravens
Ron Jaworski - Ravens Michael Silver - Ravens
Peter King - Ravens Jason Cole - Ravens

It should come as no surprise that the Dolphins are not being picked by many people.  But it's been that way all season - people doubting the Fins - so it's no big deal.

Here's what I know.  The Dolphins are a far better team than they were back in week 7.  So are the Ravens.

While many think the key is for the Dolphins to run the ball, I think it'll be the other way around.  The must stop the run - but must be able to pass the ball effectively on offense.  That's how the Dolphins will win this game.

I think the Dolphins will play smart, mistake-free football.  Chad Pennington will throw for 250 yards or so.  And this Dolphin defense will make a key play or two that will really change the game.

In the end, the Dolphins will win 17-13.  That's my pick.

But what's your pick?  Of course, you'll all be picking the Fins.  So tell us how.  Which Dolphin will be the difference maker?

We want to hear your thoughts...

FUTURE MANNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN

Listen to me….and listen good. Phins 24 Ravens 20

Tony Sparano was in the film room at 430am Monday after the Jets win…Harbaugh put it to a vote if his team would practice on Christmas….who do you think will make the better adjustments? Me too.

I am on board with Matty…#1 we stop their run. Ferguson is the man this week…i think he has his chance (like Merling last week) to shine.

Ed Reed….stay away from Ed Reed. Far away from Ed Reed.

When I tell you this crowd is gonna be like none other ever in Phins stadium…believe me. Its already broken attendance records….everyone and their mother is talking about this game down here…people are traveling from colleges back down here for the game. THIS IS GOING TO BE AN INSANE CROWD….we need to keep them in it..start fast…..good special teams

i have never been so amped for a football game in my entire life…..i swear to you.

me either

that stadium better be ROCKING. My living room will be Phins central, I will be kicking anybody out who interrupts, and I will screaming at my TV until the cops show up concerned.

Sparano is relentless. He won’t allow this team to rest for one second and think about all they’ve accomplished, because the job isn’t finished. He’ll have this team feeling so disrespected and playing with such a big chip on their shoulders that will shock Baltimore (who thinks they have this one wrapped up, by the tone of their fans and taking days off) physically. First time somebody gets popped, Dolphin Stadium might crumble. The gameplan will be to own to LOS. Period. Stop their run, keep Chad standing, keep their D off balance with creative playcalling, and bring the noise to Flacco.

I won’t be sleeping for the next two days. I just hung a Dolphin flag in my bedroom, and have my lucky boxers set up on a shelf waiting for Sunday. I’m reading all the negative posts about the Dolphins this year, in succession, all day tomorrow. This whole city will be rabid tomorrow, and the Ravens are not welcome..

Oh… sorry, got a little excited.. predictions, right, where was I?

Dolphins 20, Ravens 16. Too many drives ending FG’s, Pennington goes for 250, a couple TD’s, and most importantly no picks. Flacco racks up yards (250+), but doesn’t get it in the endzone, and throws a couple picks that set us up in good field position.

Lets not forget that we were moving the ball

pretty effectively and that Baltimore defense was not impressive at all. The thing is that our defense played like shit that day, I remember how the secondary was seriously messed up and the front 3 worse just worse. If we had scored 7 points on the first drive, which was one really bad throw away on a typical 08miamidolphin drive… the rest is history and also remember that we had to throw our game plan to the trash and play from behind. The point is, if the defense had shown up that day, just like an average defense we would have won that day.

PS- The offense was playing well that day but the something we are forgetting is that this was one of Chad´s more emotional games of the season. Remember? Talking shit to Ray freaking Lewis ??

I think we have a great chance in this game

Far better than any of the media are giving us.

That said, if I was a betting man (and, um, I am) I’d still have to go with the Ravens. I’ve been picking the Fins for months now and have made some money off it (betting is totally legal in Ireland) but I’m afraid I’ve gotta stay away from this game (I refuse to bet against the fins and make money). You look at how tough Baltimore played the elite teams in the league and how they played us last time and these things have to worry you. So does the fact that even though we always seem to get the job done, some pretty weak opponents have played us close even though we never turn the ball over. We played a good team getting hot down the stretch in the Pats and they really showed our young team what big games are all about. Have our guys absorbed the lessons of that game?

They are a team with a lot of consistent playmakers, whereas we only have a couple and rely on someone new to step up every game to get it done. I just have a feeling that we’ve been playing balls out for the last nine or ten weeks, every player playing up to his potential. It’s what has made this team such a joy to watch and it’s how we got to the playoffs. But I have a feeling that the Ravens might have another gear to get to in the playoffs. Basically, especially on defence, I think there’s a talent gap that might be hard to close with pure determination. I love Crowder, Bell, and Goodman etc and what they’ve been able to do this year, but Ed Reed and crew have been destroying good offences for years.

That said they have a rookie quarterback and are playing in what should hopefully be a rocking Dolphins stadium. Their team has way more playoffs experience, but our team captain has been here before and is a calm head and a phenomenal leader (as well as the MVP in my books). We have the better running backs, and we own the clock in the fourth quarter, which speaks for a team that can turn it on when needed. We can definitely take this game. Still, I hate to say it guys, but I always look at the fins unbiased, and what I see here is Ravens 20, Fins 13.

Make no mistake the future is bright, but in a season of miracles I think we may just run out. Win or lose, let’s enjoy a home playoff game and appreciate just what this team has achieved.

Football isn't a matter of life and death - it's far more important than that.

Don't kid yourself...

I have been reading many posts about how the Ravens will take us for granted and won’t show up prepared. Wishful thinking. This is the playoffs and they watch the film. They know who we are, in week 7 and now.

From opening kickoff they are going to try to intimidate us with FAST, HARD hitting, smash mouth football. They will want to take us out of this game quickly. The fans and the young players are susceptible to falling apart if they make some nasty hits then steam roll down the field for a TD. We need to weather the initial storm. The first quarter will determine if we will make it a game… then I think it is 50-50 from there.

On the flip side, if we could do the same to them. Make some smash mouth plays early, DBs flying around, a blitz and a hard sack, maybe even a turnover… the crowd will go nuts, Flacco will crap himself, and we can run our gameplan from there. 70-30 chance we win if we control our gameplan, dictate pace, and keep the crowd in the game early.

Bottom Line: The first 8 minutes will be a huge factor in this game. I have to believe Tony is telling his players the same thing. We’ll see if they respond.

Miami wins a hard fought game: 27-16

Gameballs:
1. Ferguson
2. Goodman
3. CP

5. Ronnie

I also believe that if we’re close in the 4th we’ll pull out the win

I agree with you two.

The Ravens are solid and built to win in the playoffs. Aside from Cam Cameron and a rookie QB, i don’t really see too many weaknesses. Their WRs aren’t great, but neither are ours. This will not be an easy game, but I think the team that hits hardest will win.

Sparano is queuing the team up to play physical, and I am pretty sure that if we can stop the run game, we can win. But we also need to be able to run the ball, and if we need to get fancy with our line to do it, fine. Baltimore routinely runs an unbalanced line with an extra Tackle to the right. That is their power run formation, and it isn’t too different from what we do in the Wildcat. We have to be able to counter it on D.

If it comes down to a battle of the QBs, I think Chad can win it, but Flacco is pretty good. He was my favorite QB coming out of the draft because of his measurables, including his 40 time. He is quick for a big guy, and we need to watch for those sneaks, draws, and scrambles. He can hurt us that way, and a single DB is going to have a big job taking him down if he gets one on one.

This is not a cakewalk, and whichever team wins is going to be beat up for the next game. Miami has a couple of edges over the Ravens. One is execution. Miami executes it’s offensive game plan better than just about any team this year. I mean, they don’t make many mistakes, and that includes dropping passes and penalties. And I am confident that the game plan will allow them to score on the Ravens D. The other is an intangible that is somewhere between heart and confidence. They seem to be able to match up to other teams, and play whatever game they need in order to come away with the win. I attribute this quality to the coaching staff, but it is only possible with a team that executes extremely well.

I think this game could go either way, but I believe in the end, once again, the Fins find a way to win.
Ferguson clogs the middle all day.
Both Goodman and W. Allen step up and make a bid for the best CB tandem in the game today.
Bell has another strong game in run support and used in blitz packages.
Ricky and Ronnie both rush for 60+ yds
And the Ravens don’t stop the Wildcat wrinkles this time.

Pennington will find a way….Mark my words !

CP10 will use every tool in the work shed and quiet the media once again with a last second TD probably via an unlikely source ….The Dolphins will go to the next round.
They are fighters and they become closer together when it counts. Ronnie will be the
other main reason we win.

Keys to the game

1. Make them one dimensional by either stuffing their run, shutting down their receivers, or rattling Flacco so bad his passes are scary. If it is clear they can not be successful passing or running we can bend but not break on the other and win.

2. Do not become one dimensional on O (don’t give up on the run early and keep their secondary honest). Keep them on their toes.

The above seems obvious since it will mean we are effective across the board. But our approach should have these goals in mind.

…and of course start strong so that we can stick with our original plan.

Ditka is the only one showing us the Love. Winner of this game(Dolphins) in my opinion goes to the SuperBowl. One hit on Ben next week and Pittsburg is finished and then i think its going to be up against SD, who is coming on strong if LT is 100%. The Dolphins are coming together at the right time.

Also

with all the picks, I’m not hearing one thing about the Ravens starting a rookie QB, on the road, in the playoffs. I guess all the experts dicks are hard off the Ravens “D”.

Or maybe they’re assuming the Fins are just gonna roll over and play dead because they aren’t even suppose to be here. Ya know, they are looking at the “story” only. Dolphins 1-15 last year, got 11-5 this year, win the division and go to the playoffs “The End”. No sorry this isn’t a book. We’re the ones with the veteran QB. We’re the ones with the homefield advantage. We have RBs just as good as theirs. Our defense might not be as good, but they are much improved. More so to give their rookie QB a run for his money, on the road, in the playoffs.

All of the “experts” are not only picking the Ravens to win, but win by 10+. I guess the entire nations is just gonna have to learn the hard way. You would have thought that after an entire season, the hard-heads would have at least lifted a eyebrow.

Maybe

but I’m guessing our 25th ranked pass defense picks the rookie QB, on the road, in the playoffs at least 3 times. The Ravens are much improved, but so are we. We were 2-4 after we played Baltimore the 1st time. We are 9-1 SINCE.

Everyone can blah, blah, blah against our opposing teams records. You still gotta win em, go ask the Jets. So we had a favorable schedule this year. Big deal. We don’t get it EVERY YEAR by playing the likes of the Bengals and Browns for 4 “give me” wins.

Ravens lost 5 games

all to playoff teams, while theFins lost three games to non-playoff teams while playinghte NFL’s weakest schedule. We both are thrilled our teams are where they are this season. Be happy, as you will be very disappointed tomorrow as it just will not be a close game as the Dolphins will fold under the physical pressure that some of your fans have spoken of in these posts.

Tool. 2 of those 3 came in the first 6 games, one to a Jets team that was considered a Super Bowl frontrunner until their collapse, the other to a Texans team that finished at .500. The other loss to a non-playoff team came against a Patriots team, that we had already beaten, that finished with the same record as YOU. We didn’t lose to a team under .500.

they don't know numbers

Poor ole rexy says 10,000 people at the stadium will be Ravens fans. That leaves 65’000 Dolphins fans, but he still thinks the stadium will be pro-Ravens. Somebody needs a math lesson.

You'd be surprised how many other SB Nation sites are like that

And they get little readership because of it.
Matty runs this place with class. That’s why he gets such a good readership. There are other dolphins blogs we could read, but we come back here for a reason.

Football isn't a matter of life and death - it's far more important than that.

Oh yeah...

we forget the mantra over there at BB…‘quality over quantity’. Less is more mentality doesn’t scale well at 65,000:10,000 ratio in a hostile stadium. But don’t tell them, they’ll figure it out tomorrow in person ;)

Why dont you check the attendance for your games. So if 10,000 of 65,000 are ravens fans thats 55,000 dolphins fans. Still bigger but not quite the same

10,000 people...

that doesn’t even fill an arena football game, and we alll know how loud those crowds are. I’ve seen 10,000 people follow Tiger at a US Open. Sounds big, but in a stadium, it’s not.

"Are we doing this? Is this happening?"

by Little Nicky 21 on Jan 3, 2009 3:46 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Nicky, dude, it’s 10,000 people. That’s like, almost 11,000 people. That’s really close to being almost 1/7 of the stadium capacity. Rexx is some manner of genius with his numeric wizardry.

It’s kinda cute how this schmuck runs his mouth in unwelcome territory…it’s like watching a poodle barking at a chained up rottweiler.

Guys

Dolphin Stadium, a state-of-the-art, open-air facility when it opened in 1987, was the first of its kind to be constructed with private funds at a cost of $115 million. Dolphin owner Joseph Robbie, after years of posturing and politics in hopes of obtaining public funds for a new stadium, broke ground in Miami Gardens, Fla., on Dec. 1, 1985. On Dec. 31, he obtained the construction loan and permanent financing. Executive Suites and Club Level seating, with season-ticket holders committed to long-term agreements, helped finance construction. The capacity for football and soccer is 75,540 and 36,331 for baseball.

Honestly, I don’t care if ya come over here talking trash, but at least have your numbers right. You look like retards we you put up wrong numbers/stats repeatedly without doing your homework.

This puts our stadium in the top 5/6 in capacity in the NFL. So umm, your measly 10,000 fans aren’t gonna make much of a difference.

key to the game will be

the key to the game will be to put presser on Flacco , and stopping the run if it comes down to Flacco having to win the game with his arm its not going to happen I think he has 14 touchdowns and 12 interceptions and don’t forget he’s a rookie QB stopping the run and forcing Flacco to pass the ball will win us the game, and we must get the ball to Ricky and Ronnie in open space we need Porter to have a big game tomorrow

17-12 Dolphins

Dolphins special teams are playing a lot better than back in week 7 ,CP is playing good football, the d is playing great. Who would you want in the playoffs a rookie QB or a Veteran who has played in the playoffs before? Just look at matt ryan today.

p.s Rexx won’t be here after tommorrow in fact he won’t be anywhere when the dolphins eliminate them from the playoffs.

here kitty kitty kitty BANG!

The Ravens will have the lead the majority of the game

But a TD pass to Bess and a DC$$$ field goal will make it a 24-21 game and move the Dolphins one step closer upstate

Love Ditka!!!!! Don’t fuck with Iron Mike

By the way, if anyone sees Rexx and his hawaiian shirt, throw a beer at him. Then again, don’t waste it. That would be bad alcohol abuse

Heart Attack Again this week

I know the game this week is going to go down to the wire again. I am thinking we’ll win 21-17. Can’t wait for the game to begin, but I have to watch from work. At least I work in a sports store! Wearing my colors proud tomorrow!

As for our standout this week, I want to believe that it will be a ST return that does it for us. The unit has been improving, and it’s been someone different almost every week making the difference. This would be the area noone expects from us, so why not our ST this week?

btw:

anyone else think Jason Cole picking the ravens is just cold…
or do you think J Taylor made the pick for him, since he wrote most of cole’s
columns this year?

by W NY Fins Fan on Jan 4, 2009 2:05 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

the thing about cole

he always prided himself on being “objective” when he was the beat guy. So I am sure part of it with him is wanting to show that he is not a homer.

Even though we know he is not even close.

game will come down to

turnovers and 3rd down efficiency… the team that does better in those two spots will win.

and to that i’ll add the phins are starting a vet, they are at home, and have a veteran offensive Q, who doesn’t have a history of choke calls in the playoffs like the other team does.

So i’ll take the points.

Honestly

do people know how stupid they look when they comeover to other teams blog without having their numbers right? Calling others names and then repeating their wrong numbers. Makes them looks like real imbeciles. If our record attendance is 73,000 (word has it we are topping out at over 75,000 this Sunday) how in the hell could I stadium only hold 65,000?
