Would trading up make sense?

Using the ESPN draft pick value board, it seems possible that without trading away too much that we could find ourselves in the middle of the first round.

1st round (25) + 2nd round (52) = 1070 points. This puts us on the cusp of getting the skins pick.

Given we've got two second round picks, this could be a worthwhile strategy if it addresses a position of real need. Most boards don't have the first ILB going until New Orleans pick 14th - and this pick varies between Laurinitis and Maualuga.

Depending on how the cards fall in FA, ILB could be a glaring need going into the draft. And as mentioned here, the draft is not really deep in quality beyond these two.

So, at the cost of a late 2nd rounder is it worth moving up? With this strategy in mind, does this allow the Phins to look to other needs in Free Agency? I vote, yes. Doing this allows the front office to focus on other areas - (Peppers, Peppers, Peppers....).

If the Phins are not stocked at ILB by draft day, would you trade up?
No, lets stockpile the picks.

It's a nice thought and worth exploring

But I think I would reather hold on to that extra pick. We can use all the picks we can get.

Yeah... I am on the fence a little.

Once FA is finished I will be set one way or the other.
I just see the ILB FA market as being one where you don’t want to be.
Then the draft class is weak after the top two guys.

Fair point.

I actually love Goff if the Chargers don’t hold on to him. Between signing Goff and using our early second round pick on an OL I would be pretty comfortable,
I would prefer to dabble in Free agency for an OL than for an ILB…

yes you are right, getting an OL free agent is a safe bet

and these ILB in the draft we are talking about are too. Its much easier to pick an OL bust through the draft

I think we still have too many holes to be trading up-

that is something you do when you are “1 guy” away from going to the SB.

I would be willing to go up for Mauluga

but I’d be wary of using a 2nd to get there. Especially the way these guys draft, that second is almost guaranteed of being a starter. Maybe we can go 1 and 3 and get there… Probably not though.

Maualuga is going to be good-

but I don’t think ILB is worth trading up for- Bart Scott was an UDFA- Crowder was a third rounder. I would only be willing to move up for a Ray Lewis- and even he went at the 26th pick so we wouldn’t have had to trade up :p lol

tough call

a Ray Lewis type player in the first round would be worth it if you knew for 100% it would turn out that way, 13 years of dominating play, but i like the 3 starters we are going to get with these 3 picks. A 5th rounder like ZT was in 96 would be icing on the cake.
