Video Time: Chad Henne
Is it me or does it seem like forever since the Dolphins last played a game? And it hasn't even been a month.
It's going to be a long offseason.
Anyways, I know some people were looking for video of Chad Henne's TD drive against the Cardinals from week 2. And guess what I got?
The video, though, is split into 2 videos - due to reasons beyond my control. Both can be seen after the jump...
Have a good weekend, all, and I'll see you back here on Sunday night/Monday morning.

Lots of potential from the guy.
But I think that if he spends at least one more season on the bench, he could end up being the next Aaron Rodgers and that would be sweet for us. And also we all know that CP10 gives us the best chance to win right now so we could have another inspiring season while our Qb of the future learns the ropes from the sidelines. I heard the other day on the radio that Parcells and Sparano have no doubt in their minds that Henne is going to sit out another season, not one doubt.
That may be the plan right now
But anything could happen to Pennington and change all that.
Frankly, given his history of health issues, I was surprised Pennington played all 16 games this year.

My sentiment exactly.

god i hope not
he could end up being the next Aaron Rodgers
if you look at his numbers in greater detail or talk to a packer fan – he kind of stunk this year.

Matty - you warmed my heart
it’s nice to take a look forward to next season (i hope anyways)
but from this game there are some points to note.
Dang it – henne has a big arm (that second pass he throws into triple coverage) where he blows it right by the under guy (making him stumble) we haven’t seen a pass like that since well number 13….
his release is pretty quick too.
he has some issues – arcing the ball and putting some touch on it.
he seems to lock in on receivers, something most inexperienced QB’s do and unforetuneatly PT seems to be the only way to cure it (look at cassel early in the year vs. late)
he gets a little happy footed on some passes and misses (the ronnie brown td pass/drop)…
there is enough there that you see real future in the kid, but you can also see where he could flop too… that lack of touch (although he likely was pretty amped up and might settle down if they ever name him the starter) has killed many a promising QB’s career. and the locking in on a receiver is another serious problem…
Finally – DAM – Penne looks good as the back up QB – hopefully we’ll see a lot of that next year.
I noticed that too-
he drills all his passes in and they come in low- he had a few chances to get his WRs some YAC but they had to sink down to get the ball. He also stared down his WR very noticeably, and you could see sometimes the corners locking in and getting there for the immediate tackle. If they were playing a tighter coverage and not the prevent defense you might have seen a pick.
But he did have very impressive arm strength, and showcased his quick release (look how he got the ball off even when the defender was offsides and drilled him). If he can take a bit of coaching he could be very very good.

well.....he's had a whole year now
of coaching. And from things I’ve read and have posted here, he’s put in the work, and the extra work. Listening and using Penningtons knowledge, and taking full advantage of every ounce of practice time. Can’t wait till Preseason to see how far he’s come.

Totally makes sense to bench the 2nd place MVP QB
for a dude that “has a strong arm”…..i like the kid….but I dont see anything tht sets him apart from like 20 other QB’s ive seen lately.
"Worst 2 First"...Your 2008 AFC East Champion Miami Dolphins
I just refuse to buy into it...and thats all ill say
I know this franchise is starved for a stud young qb……but its not like he is a top pick. While other people like to see the combine and bench presses and how the uniform looks on him…i say what are ur results? ….i just have NEVER seen the kid win anything…..but im supposed to believe he is the next coming? John Beck shoulda taught us that 2nd rd picks are not sure things….so a drive down 31-3 where the Cards gave a shit mean nothing to me. Im not trying to start again here…but Im just sayin he doesnt look any diffrent than allot of other QB’s ive seen. Nice arm…..i like him…hope hes great….but to me hes just another backup player that has a chance to be good.
"Worst 2 First"...Your 2008 AFC East Champion Miami Dolphins
every positon is up for improvement
and it would be a sad day if the better QB is sitting on the bench because some idiot sportswriters have man crushes on pasta armed friendly interviewee QB…..
so how many more years do we have to endure a caretaker QB that one franchise has already learned doesn’t have the physical ability to lead a football team against tough defenses.
yes, he’s a nice feel good story, but is he the second best QB in the AFC? hardly… right now he’s not even the 2nd best QB in the division.

How did you come to that conclusion?
He was the second rated QB. . . in the entire NFL! Yeah! Get rid of the bum! 12th in TDs, 9th in yardage, #1 in completion , & 4th fewest interceptions. We are supposed to think he is done because the lousy Jets thought he was? If anything that should put extra faith in him. Who in the division is better than he is? Brett “I always think I’m on the other team” Farve? Maybe you like Trent “scrambled brains” Edwards? And if you say Matt Cassell I’m going to puke because he is awful- why do you think he said he’d stay with the Pats even if Brady comes back? Because he knows outside of the McDaniels/Patriots offense he is worthless. 57 of his yardage was gained by his receivers after the catch. To put that in perspective, they got 600 more yards after the catch than our receivers- which would have put Penningtons yardage at 4200- good for 3rd in the league. If you carry over the percentage instead of the raw #, and he would have thrown for 4900 yards, behind only Brees. In case you can’t read between the lines, that is a pretty big red flag that Cassell’s yards are a product of brilliant offensive scheming and not a measure of his talent.
Every QB has bad days- Peyton Manning, Kurt Warner, Drew Brees, and Phillip Rivers all had games as bad or worse than CP10 in the playoffs. He willed us into games we otherwise should have lost. If he stinks, he stinks and I’ll say it- but don’t just make stuff up. He had 8 games with a QB rating over 100, 10 over 90, and never dipped below 60 in the regular season. His lowest QB rating on the year was 53.7 – the playoff game (His other game against Baltimore he posted a rating of 92). Peyton Manning had 2 games with a rating below 50. Warner posted a 43.4 rating against NE. Rivers could only muster a 58.8 against the Raiders (and had another game rated in the 40s against Pitt- the only team they played with a D comparable to Baltimore)- Chad? 95.6.
Gee- to me he looks pretty good still. I don’t see anyone running Peyton Manning or Phillip Rivers out of town. If people would stop buying the media line about his limitations and look at the results, you’ll be much happier next season when he is our starter week 1. Maybe he gets injured, or maybe he flames out, but for now he is obviously the best choice to lead this team.

Great comment gatorphan
Good way to back up your argument with pure hard facts. Thumbs up from me on that one!
stats is what you want then here are some stats
Split G Cmp Att Pct Yds Yds/Att TD Int 1st Sck Rtg
Last 2 Min. Half 14 31 52 59.6 330 6.3 0 2 21 2 62.2
3rd Down 16 80 129 62.0 770 6.0 5 4 48 9 78.6
4th Down 7 4 7 57.1 38 5.4 0 0 3 0 72.3
3rd Down, 8-10 To Go 12 13 25 52.0 153 6.1 0 2 9 3 37.6
3rd Down, 11+ To Go 14 20 31 64.5 216 7.0 0 0 3 2 84.9
when the dolphins are in passing situations, penne quite frankly isnt very good and is mostly a stat padder…
take a look that the 3-11 (31 pass and he only gets 3 first downs but is 20 for 31 and has an 85 rating) so needing 11 yards or more he dumps the ball off for 7 yards (takes what the defense allows)
so it’s more than ‘he has a bad game every once in a while’, it’s a situation where good teams (or teams that have the ability to dictate to offenses) are able to exploit penne’s weaknesses and force penne to beat them by stuffing the box and daring penne to throw over the LB’s…
so to suggest that the QB position isn’t one that needs to be upgraded is ignoring the reality that until there is a better QB, miami will have a hard time running against good teams and will always have to play from the lead in order to avoid passing situations.

4th Down 8 9 11 81.8 146 13.3 2 0 9 0 158.3
btw: take a look at that 4th down number 9 first downs in 11 passes.
and Zero td’s for penne in the last 2 minutes of a half for the season… i could bring up the goal line numbers which aren’t great either, but in fairness to penne miami ran a lot of wildcat inside the 10.

It helps to have WR's that can actually go get open down the field.
Cassel has Moss, Welker, and a spread offense that pretty much gives him 5 options on every play. His OL is also better than ours, allowing him more time to actually sit back there and throw.
Manning has tons of options as well, Wayne, Harrison, Gonzalez, Clark, and Addai. He’s also probably the best QB of this era, something that nobody is claiming for Pennington.
At least consider the rest of the team when comparing QB’s. The game is not about one player.

Nice to see this now
I don’t think I paid too much attention to this drive when we were heading for an 0-2 record and getting blown out. In context, it’s a lot more hopeful than I remember. Henne has a strong arm, fast release, and is pretty accurate. The biggest negative I can see is that he stares down his receivers. Luckily, that’s something that can be taught.
I wouldnt be suprised if we saw alot of henne next year
Considering that penington has been injured every other year the last 4 years my gut tells me that we will be seeing alot of henne.
henne has a cannon.

Shows some Promise
He looked good, but not great… I’d definetly like to see him come this preseason. Isn’t it funny looking back after this blowout by the Cards that the winless fins would finish 11-3, and be AFC East Champs. Not to mention the Cards would be representing the NFC in the Superbowl!
Laces out!
I don't think too many rookie QBs have looked great on the first drive of their NFL career...

Thank you kindly!
I made it on that Obamicon.com website where you can make posters in the style of his “Hope” and “Progress.” You can’t see it because the file is too large, but is says “Genius” under Parcells’ face. I also made a Sparano one that says “Leader” and a Ted Ginn one that says “Too Good.”

Big ten fans thought
As a lifetime resident of Michigan and long time hater of Michigan (MSU alum), as well as lifetime dolphin fan; I can assure you Henne is the real deal. I watched all his games, and while he did have some problems, as you could expect from a 19 year old, he is somebody that can definitely be a top tier nfl-qb. FYI huskerdolphin you are a very good commenter but don delillo over 15 years ago would like to ask you about your reference

it looks like a Chinese Communist propaganda poster.
Nice insights on Henne, thats reassuring. Sometimes the best local watchers have the best eyes.

yeah he has the tools
to be a great QB – that arm strength and quick release can’t be taught and that kind of thing gives you hope that penne will be on the sideline soon (fingers crossed).
but he certainly displayed a couple of big faults that only PT really corrects which are consistant faults the have sidelined MANY a prospect.
as everyone knows QB’s are crapshoots and we’ll only know what the team has in Henne about 2-3 years after he actually plays….
which likely be for 3 or more years….
