Pennington Lovefest...I'm All for Henne..Bring it on...Posted Jan 2, 2009 1:57 PM EST

This has gotten me stirred a little bit. In a Previous fanpost by Phinsguy99 (link http://www.thephinsider.com/2009/1/1/707031/have-we-signed-an-extensio ) We we're having a discussion on Pennington and Henne.

The question is asked if we signed Pennington to an extension. To which I rose to Henne's defense. Simply put, don't fall in love with Pennington like the Browns did with Anderson last year and lock up alot of money because of this one good year.

Like I posted:

The Jets got rid of Pennington for a reason. Remember he got a come back player of the year with the Jets. Don’t get me wrong, I think Pennington is a fine QB. I love the job he did, but I’m all for the future.

Some peeps think that Henne was the best QB prospect coming out last year, ahead of the likes of Ryan and Flacco. Now he has been able to sit a year. I have no problems whatsoever if the Dolphins start floundering next year to throw Henne in without any hesitation.

Please correct me if I’m wrong but, I think the Cincinnati Bengals had a similar delemma a few years ago. Remember when they first got Marvin Lewis.

They drafted Carson Palmer, but Jon Kitna was thier QB. If I’m remembering correctly Kitna won the comeback player of the year when he started Carson’s entire rookie season. But the year after they gave the reigns to Palmer. Look how that turned out.

I’m not saying Henne is Palmer, nor the Dolphins should/would do that here. Lets just not lock up alot of money in 1 player just because he had one good year.

Now I'll be the 1st to say my vote to the poll. Not no, but HELL NO. I don't wanna see a large amount of money tied into Pennington because of his good year. So lets go, I'll argue with anyone (and everyone) about it too.-)

 Update:

Not trying to start anything over again, but since Matty abruptly ended my other post, I couldn't respond to a certain post(s) that I have seen.

I have been accused REPEATEDLY of just wanting to get rid of Pennington after his bad playoff game. Even after I (and others) brought up this post nobody seems to remember it. So I'm updating the date and time of this post so pepple can see that this wasn't a knee-jerk reaction. This was posted after Pennington help get us into the playoffs. That is all.

Go Fins!

You need to define "long-term"

Should he get at least a 1 year extension? Yes.

Should he get a 5 year extension? No.

The thing is – I think that he’ll make a good backup for Henne when the time comes and Henne takes over. So a lot would depend on the money.

But if he wants something like a 2 year, $14 million extension, I’d go for it.

We have under for 1 more year

if he wants another, I’m for that…but just for 1 more year.

I think he’ll be a nice backup for Henne too. I’m just not sold if he will want to be.

he'll want to be if there is reason for it

Either he plays poorly or gets hurt and isn’t the same.

But if he plays like he did this year, there’s no need for Henne to come in.

by Matty I on Jan 2, 2009 2:53 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

thats exactly how i feel

if CP10 plays like he did this year….Henne can sit again. Henne would be rookie of the year if he came even close to Chad’s number this year.

I like Henne..but he says dont let CP10 be our version of Anderson…well dont let Henne be your version of Beck lol…or Leinart…etc

lord no

trade him now while he has value…

spielman would give a 2nd easily and if you get him bidding against himself he might go up to a 2nd this year and next.

the guy is mediocrity incarnate.

Tough choice

because it all depends on the money. I don’t think it takes all that much to sign him here for another couple years, because he’s loyal and knows that he’s wanted here. Obviously, if he decides he wants a ton of money, it won’t happen. But I seriously doubt that.

Like Matty just said while I was typing (damn you) he’ll be a quality backup once Henne takes the job, and I’d rather have him as my number 2 than any other backup in the league right now.

some things are worth the $$$

So let me see if I understand, You want to let the best QB the fins have had since 13 retired go because an unproven rookie might be better. This because of money? I could not disagree more…

Frequently wrong, but never in doubt.

Thats not saying much.

As for letting him go, I didn’t say that. We have him for another year, if he want 1 more I go with that.

But if he wants 3, 4 ,5 more years…yea he needs to go.

I think it comes down to money

if he wants a fair deal for 3 more years, I’m doing it. It’s very hard to find a backup QB that can step in and continue winning games. I don’t think we just dump him, regardless of whether he’s the starter for the next couple years or is the backup next season. He’s waaay too valuable to this team, but it all depends on what kind of cash he wants. I’m fairly certain he won’t go looking for a big payday.

shouldn't come

down to money, it should come down to who will help the fins win playoff games and
it is highly unlikely to lead any team to a superbowl…

it should all be about winning a superbowl no winning 9 games next year.

what if we give he a nice big contract extension and he pulls a Derek Anderson on us then what?

Big extension, nice chunk of gurantee money

invested in a QB that was only suppose to be a fill in anyways on a team that is rebuilding and has other areas to address.

I don't understand where this

“nice chunk of guaranteed money” is coming from. They’re not gonna sign him to a huge deal. This isn’t Mueller we’re talking about here, Pennington will get a decent amount in an extension, but nothing that cripples the team. I’m sure it’ll be performance-based, not bonus-loaded. Give Parcells/Ireland more credit than that, bro.

They’re not gonna sign him to a huge deal.

We don’t know this.

Give Parcells/Ireland more credit than that, bro.

So you got some inside info that Parcells is staying that we should all know about?

I’m not saying that they defintely will or not. I think Parcells has and will (if he stays) do a great job. I don’t know how good of a job Ireland will do be himself yet. I would like to believe he will be fine, but I dunno.

If they sign him to a 3, 4, 5, year extension there is gonna be some serious money involved.

The NFL is all about...

…what have you done for me lately?

No question Pennington has had a phenomenal season – far better than any of us could have expected.

But I don’t see Tuna signing him to an extension. Pennington was signed to be the leader this team really needed and to school his protégé Henne until the kid is ready to take over the reigns.

Pennington is smart enough to know that’s why they brought him to Miami.

Given the much tougher schedule next season, Pennington’s performance could easily take a nosedive and force Sparano to make a QB change and give Henne his shot. He could just as easily take a hard shot and put him out for awhile just like Brady.

We have to give Pennington all kinds of credit for what he did this season – but I don’t see Parcells signing him to any extension. Too many things can happen in such a short amount of time to make such a move.

Things can change drastically by this time next season just as it did after last year’s disaster.

Wait...

why are we discussing this now?? There won’t be an extension signed now. There’s plenty of time for this once the offseason starts. If Pennington leads us to a Super Bowl, he deserves an extension.

I say wait till the middle of next year

Pennington has been phenomenal but he has been injury prone throughout his career, His shoulders have taken a lot of damage over the years i say after this year and continued performance next year then you start talking about signing 2 or 3 more years. In 9 years he has only played 16 games twice this year being one of those 2. So right now im not ready to lock him up long term once he proves he can stay healthy and sustain his play on the field then you talk about added some years to his contract

by crzynick25 on Jan 2, 2009 5:30 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

the injury prone thing...

could be more the result of cheap-ass Jets hierarchy that would rather invest in a ‘Favre’ than an o-line…with the protection he has now, we may see an end to that ‘rumour’ eventually… right now i think i would go ahead and gamble, give him a sweet contract ext., but i’m biased too, as i can’t recall the last time i felt ‘secure’ when miami had the ball….i think i’d pay anything for that [some seasons i would almost pray for the fins to get a 3 & out on offense to prevent any chance of a turnover lol] but it is definitely a subject worthy of debate in any case, no clear-cut ‘right’ answer here imo, only time will tell.

I say give Pennigton a raise

maybe a 2 mil signing bonus and add a yr to the contract. This would allow him to leave after next yr if he feels he wants to start and not be the back up here. Pennington has a least a 5yr back up role in Miami if he wants it. If he signs the back up contract I then try to move Beck

CP10 extension

Is Henne going somewhere?

id give CP an extension that keeps him around for 3 more years….knowing Henne is right there at any point. You will save money when Henne becomes QB…so it wont hurt as much when you have to eat a few million on CP10…..just my thoughts

Henne is like Beck too me….dont tell me about the labor pains…show me the baby. He has all the tools…but im not ready to throw away a 2nd place MVP QB for a chance at a 1st place one.

3 more years?

didn’t Henne sign for 4 years? So if we sign Pennington for 3 more years, then we’ll have both QBs going into FA at the same time wouldn’t we?

I don’t think Henne is anything like Beck. Henne has the “somthing” Beck doesn’t have (to me anyways, not to mention Henne is 4 yrs younger.

how do you know what Henne is?

i said sign him for 3….but u probally wont play him all 3….u play cp10 till he looks like Henne is ur better option…and u cut CP and take the loss in money while paying Henne 2nd rd pick money.

it is what it is…..Pennington will get his money…he will be our qb next yr…but we play some tough teams..so i can see a Henne crowd growing if we falter….

yes, you said 3 years

but i think Henne sign for for years THIS year. meaning if we sign Pennington for 3 more years and Henne has 3 more years (after this year) that leaves us with what? Both QBs being FAs in 3 years.

And if we aren’t gonna play him all 3 years, why waste money on a 3 years extension?

1 Year at a Time

I love me some Penny. But he is not the future, keep him while he’s still hot. Then, when he cools like every veteran QB does bring in the young buck, Henne or Beck, who ever it may be. Until then, Penny has the hot hand, lets roll with it. 1 year at a time!

Look at the Jets Now .... Pennington is the Man

I know your point is not to lock him up long term but I don’t see that happening. Is Chad Henne going to be great .. I don’t know. Didn’t they say that about John Beck? or even Kellen Clemens

I hope for the longtime future of the team that Henne will one day become the starter but I hope its more like an Aaron Rodgers situation not a Kellen Clemens. You don’t dump a QB because a guy has had one season behind him and was drafted high. Compare it to the Jets … they thought the same thing with Kellen Clemens and then when that didn’t work they were so hell bent to go get someone they got old man Favre. Now they are screwed with NO QB and we have 2 possible options at QB if Pennington gets injured.

I have a question for you

ok – so they are going to start penne another season, per sparano, great caretaker U continues…

now you all want to bring penne back past that year…. that leaves 1 year to evaluate henne…

now the great what if… what if Henne isn’t the answer, how many years is the franchise set back?

isn’t it better to dump a guy who is a caretaker at best and move on to see if there is a franchise QB on the team?
and isn’t it better to let a young guy take his lumps while the team is rebuilding? yes they are still rebuilding.

Penny, henne and Becky

Well guys I read the post, I guess i will put in my 2 cents. I think we should sign Chad to an extension next year. But he is 32, so a 3 year is the most I would give him. He’s a good starter and can become a great back up. Plus I am sure he is no Brett, in that I mean he is probably actually teaching the kid a few things. Tuna thinks he is the future, hence the second round pick. I think keep Penny as the starter next year, let Henne do clean up duty when we blow someone out (if it happens) or when we are getting blown out (ala Arizona) so he can get some reps of live action ball in. And then the following year. Let them compete for the chance to start. Let Tony see who has a chance of being better for the team, I mean the kid has poise too and confidence in the pocket. I am sure he is learning a lot. And he has a nice arm on him. I watched the Michiagan Florida game when he won and wow, the kid is good. But thats college, but he has that potential. Becke can stay and play his role as back up. And one of the Chads can become our futre. I am sure they would be up for it.
