Dolphins sign CFL star Cameron Wake

PrintThe Dolphins recently worked out CFL star defensive end Cameron Wake. Other teams also worked out Wake and were interested in his services. But the two time CFL Defensive Player of the Year is heading to Miami.
The Dolphins signed Wake on Sunday to a 4 year, $4.9 million deal - including a $1 million signing bonus.
At 6'3, 260 pounds, Wake is likely to be converted to a pass-rushing outside linebacker in Miami's 3-4 defense. And he's quite athletic, running a 4.55 40 yard dash at the Combine back in 2005. He wasn't drafted, though, coming out of Penn State. He was signed by the Giants but only spent a few months with their organization.
The past 2 seasons, Wake has been a star for the B.C. Lions of the CFL, picking up 39 sacks in two years with the Lions. He was named the CFL Rookie of the Year in 2007 as well as Defensive Player of the Year in both '07 and '08. A reported 17 teams showed interest in signing Wake this offseason. He worked out for at least 8 of those interested teams before settling with the Dolphins.
Wake's combination of size and speed must have peeked the interest of Bill Parcells, who admittedly is always looking for the next Lawrence Taylor. Wake will likely have every shot at making this roster and being an impact player right from the get-go.

Great Player and Person
A great pickup. This guy is a class act who has the right attitude and skills to be a very good OLB. While this is no sure thing .. as nothing is even with the draft it sure sounds like a proper move to me. This move has added more talent and also gave us more flexability in the draft … depth is always great

Almost like drafting the guy...
in the 3rd round, except you know he can be dominant outside of college football. IMO this is a very good move. It is almost like getting another draft pick. Smart move, now we just hope he is the next LT. ;)

I’m stoked. We’re one of the first teams to make some moves, outside of coaching changes (we did that too),. That means “Cerberus” is hungry.
Will this affect anything with Peppers? Not that we’re after him or have a chance to sign him, just, does this tip anything off?
Awesome pickup. I have to calm down. A lot of off season left and Wake still has to show good things in camp and preseason. I think he can handle it. He’s got experience now playing in the CFL and is no longer raw, as Markus said, which is probably the only reason he didn’t stick in the NFL the first time.
Take care of the little things, and the big things will take care of themselves.

good pickup
cam wake played for my home town lions and was the most dominate player in the cfl since doug flutie he may not be a great player in the nfl but he will be good
i think if anything
it addresses depth at a vital position in a 3-4 defense and gives us some flexibility come draft time.

I like what he could possibly bring. I really like that the Trifecta is looking everywhere for a better player. Also, we signed a safety, Ethan Kilmer from the Bengals. Don’t know any more than what I read here. To me, it sounds like a special team/depth pick, with maybe some developing hopes. Just like that next year has started already when it comes to making this team better.

One thing I will say
and I see it’s been said a couple times, but if we paid this guy over a million a year, and signed him for 4 years, he’s gotta be good. These guys don’t toss money around.
One thing I found interesting in an article about this on NFL.com is that about 11 other teams were interested and had made offers, but he chose Miami. So he’s not completely unknown in NFL circles. I think between the money we shelled out and the fact that he had offers from a third of the league, we found ourselves a ballplayer.
Best case scenario: We found another diamond and he’s starting material right away, and fills our OLB need to the point where we don’t need to draft one.
I think it’s a great move, and I’m already excited to see what this kid can do, or at least hear from Ireland on why they decided to bring him in.

might replace Andersen too………maybe just adding depth, let them fight it out in training camps and who see is the best when they post the opening day roster.

he won’t be replacing Crowder as he is an OLB not a ILB. Have to agree with Husker .. this move was made for depth and maybe to push Andersen harder in the offseason
or he could be another olb, give roth more a run stopping position while this guy is more athletic and can play pass and rush qb

I know lol I’m just reminding everyone that not every move they have done has been GREAT. I know the difference between a player signed for camp and a 5m deal .. that is why I mentioned Wilford and not Keith Davis. It does take a lot of great moves to turn a team around like they did so I do trust them regardless of who they draft or who they pickup.

The way this kid turns the corner on the outside rush….low with speed and strength…..looks like a good pickup……I hope he hits the weightroom and gets some guns. Now if we can only get Peppers from Carolina for JT 2nd round pick our OLB position will be done and we can move to the ILB with the 1st round pick.

This is freaking awesome! After his second straight DPY award I knew he was going to the NFL.
The second clip features Cam ripping apart my hometown Tiger-Cats on several occasions (including KC castoff Casey Printers), and as a CFL season ticket holder I can tell you from watching Wake week to week that this kid is a stud.
The fact that he’s getting a payday is pretty telling as well – we may not know what the other offers were but if Tuna is happy giving Cam a 4-year deal then they must be really happy with what they see.

As a Chiefs fan, I’m envious. We desperately need help in our LB corps and was dissapointed to see Walden slip away to you guys. Now that you took Wake its getting a little ridiculous.

because as you may very well know Pioli is married to Parcells daughter. So we’re in the family now. Things are bound to turn around ; ^ )
I think we all were shocked when Shanahan was fired. It will be nice to not have to face him twice a season now but it’s always sweet sticking it to him at least once year I have to admit. Will be interesting to see what McDaniels brings to the mix as they’ve got some young weapons in Denver.
