Dolphins vs Jets Postgame Thread
That was an interesting finish, wasn't it?
Right now, all I'll say is that at least the players put forth a good effort. As poorly as they played at times, they had a chance to win the game. That's all you can ask for out of a rebuilding team.
Also, just one thought that crossed my mind: how helpful would Ernest Wilford have been in the redzone today? Questionable decision to have Brandon London active while Wilford was inactive.
Oh well.
Look for a full recap post tonight/tomorrow morning. And leave all your post-game thoughts below.
And try to enjoy the rest of your football Sunday...

0-1
Jake Long was killing us (with the penalties)
We still should start Ronnie. We needed to throw to Ronnie more as well.
I didn’t agree with throwing it to the end zone, I would have wanted an out route.
I can’t believe we couldn’t get a touchdown in ten yards in the fourth quarter.
I guess I should have thought twice before creating my profile's name.

What could we expect?
It was a lot closer than I imagined though, which is really encouraging. Hopefully we can fix those gaps in the secondary so are front 7 don’t have to be the sole play makers in the game. On offense, Chad Pennington looked great, but the WR looked like there weren’t any WR. Tony Sparano needs to get these guys in the game some how.
I’m upset we lost, but who isn’t. There are 15 more games left, I don’t have any reason to believe we’re going to the playoffs but we should get some wins this year.

We had a chance at the end...
That’s more than we had most games last year… there’s a ton of room for improvement, but I can already say with confidence that this season won’t be nearly as frustrating and awful as last season

We lost to a much improved Jet team today
There OL and front 8 on D are much improved and our rookies hung with them most of the game. I like how our D got pressure on the QB but they did run better than I thought they would unitl they scored there last TD then we shut there running game down I will go on record to say the Jets will beat the Pats next week. I’m not sure about us, this will be a slow and sometimes painfull return to respectability…….With that being said I am happy to get that first game under our belts a lot of the rookies and 2nd yr players looked a little tight out there until the last 6 minutes of the game. Hopefully that will carry over to next week. I see us looking much improved after the break so heres to us getting a win before then………….

That was horrible!
Way too many mistakes and penalties obviously. The thing that bothers me the most is Pennington. I’m sorry, I don’t want the guy in there anymore. I don’t care if he’s one of Bill’s guys, he doesn’t have it anymore. He can’t fire it out of there like Farve, not even close. I’d rather just have Henne in there and go 4-12 this year then we can re-group again next year and be pretty good.
On the positive side, Langford is a beast, Merling is pretty good too.

Are you friggn’ Kiding me Penne had a Great game. A bit slow to start off but honestly we can’t be saying “take him out” after one game. He almose led us to victory. No let Henne sit and learn and Penne stay in and paly this season and do his best. But to say he should come out is stupid and not good for the team.
by Rytackle on Sep 7, 2008 4:55 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
No, I think you’re looking at the score and the stats, plus the fact that we had a chance at the end. However, at the start of the 4th quarter he had approximately 80 yards thrown, and he couldn’t get rid of it. I think we’ll see Henne in there early next week.

He is a game manager. He was really slow to start, but Henne needs time, we ruined Beck by putting him early. I don’t want our future going down the toilet. Penne gives us a chance to win EVERY week.

doubtful that we’ll see Henne in there next week. Pennington played well, certainly much better than any QB we’ve had around here maybe since Fiedler. Yeah, that last play cost us the game, but consider Pennington’s total performance.
One play, one game at a time. This is rebuiliding project, folks, don’t expect miracles.

Agree
Penne had a good game. He didn’t turn it over and gave us a chance to win at the end. The hail mary wobbler and penalties killed us.
The Jets also got a freebie on their last touchdown drive. Favre hiked it after the play clock expired on a third down conversion.

Sure Pennington can't gun it 60 yards,
but Ginn can’t get any separation so that’s moot. Pennington moves the ball. Pennington is calm in clutch situations. Pennington is a phenomenal QB. It was the wide receivers who didn’t give him any options; there’s a reason Fasano got all the action (I’m so glad I started him this week :D).

Agree about Wilford
Why didn’t we throw to Fasano who was hot today or our 6’6" tight end Martin?
Or if you are going to throw to Ginn, have him go in motion and throw the Bill Walsh run to the pylon route. Ginn is too small for the end zone corner throw.

some positives and negatives to take away...
What should we take away from this loss above all? Remember this is a rebuilding team and there are going to be bumps along the way. Even though the odds were stacked against us, we almost pulled away with a victory. It was a bad decision at the end by Pennington that cost us a 21-20 win.
We are going to be successful this year when we establish the run. Today we were unable to do that. Our backs average only 2.8 YPC. You can’t win wiith those kinds of stats. The positive is that Ronnie Brown is beginning to look a lot better out there. He averaged 3.8 YPC. Pretty average, but he did show some of that old burst. He’ll improve as the year goes on and he regains confidence. This is really Ronnie’s team. He’s our main offensive playmaker. Ricky Williams didn’t do anything notable out there. The Jets however did a good job in stopping the run.
The offensive line suffered with communications issues. I also noted that J. Long whiffed on a couple of blocks. I got somewhat concerned when I saw Carey take that big hit on the field. The falloff between him and Ndukwe is big, so we better hope that he can stay healthy all year. If health is not a fact, I believe that the o-line will improve over time. They’ll improve as the year progresses. Pennington had a very efficient showing. He should have thrown it away on that last play though, or he could have thrown to Ronnie, who was not covered at the left side of the field. That was a bad call! Still, he played decently, nothing flashy, but competent. The WR’s disappointed though, they struggled getting open a lot. The Jets DB’s were absolutely dominant on pass coverage. That ‘s truly the biggest strength of that team. Revis in particular owned Ginn for most of the game. I was very disappointed with his play. Where’s that speed that everyone’s always talking about? I imagine that the coaches will mix it up next week. I suspect another batch of receivers will be starting next week that weren’t starting this week, including Hagan and Wilford. The TE’s played well, very well in fact. Fasano is developing good chemistry with Pennington and Martin didn’t drop a pass today, and made plenty of key plays. His strength is not as a blocker, but rather as a receiver/red zone threat.
The defense played very competently. They struggled in containing Leon Washington, but still, the run defense performed very admirably. Note that most teams will have a hard time containing him, he’s very shifty! Ayodele in particular seemed like he was all over the field. Crowder mades some plays, but whiffed on some too. He’s a bit inconsistent. Porter and Roth put some decent pressure on Favre. Roth I believe will develop nicely into an OLB, he’s got the motor to get it done. The DB’s made some plays, but they simply couldn’t get it done. The Goodman and Allen tandem at CB is competent, but both are #2 guys at best. We need a quality cover corner—that is the real primary need we have on defense.
The defense though got some 3 and outs in. They played much better today than they did all last year. We played energetically to the end, and Pennington was able to establish a rhythm, especially towards the end of the game. Chalk it up as a learning/buidling experience.

Jets game lost by the coaches
let’s see, on the two yard line with two plays to score and you have ricky william or ronny brown in your back field. what do you do? try two passes with the worst WR’s in the NFL. shows how much the coaches trust the offensive line? Dolphin players played all the way to the end, the coaching staff called a poor game and didn’t give the players the chance to score. Defensive line played very well but we have the same weak Secondary as we did last year. Looks like the same coaching staff as well
by STILL WAITING on Sep 7, 2008 5:31 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Agree
I don’t necessarily think it’s the coaches fault, but I am still very bothered by this series. We had 3rd and goal from the 2 and didn’t try to run one of our guys up the middle there. You have to think Ricky could have gone up the middle for 2 yards there. I think it’s impossible to point fingers at any one area, but this series hurt.
by zest on Sep 7, 2008 8:01 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
i don't agree with this.
thye Jets were stacked, and we had not gotten good Oline push the entire game. What was working? CPs short quick passes. I was thinking a the same thing, but we were not having success running into the teeth of their run D.
If you want to call someone out, call out the run blocking. I’m sure the coaches feel the same way you do, that you have to be able to run the ball for 1 or 2 yds when you really need it. Unfortunately, the line wasn’t getting it done.
I am a big critic of lousy play calling, as anyone who was around here last year can attest to, but this game just didn’t have any of those WTF Mularkey moments from last year that used to make me want to drive down to S. Fla and run him over in my car.

what do we KNOW for sure?
-Ronnie gets stronger and stronger as the game goes on.
-this whole RBBC does NOT work with Ronnie…i.e., the first 3 games of last season. As soon as he got the entire workload, he was putting up unbelievable numbers.
what do we hope is true but have no PROOF of?
-ricky is even close to as good as he once was.
seems pretty simple to me. if you want to win ball games, get the ball to ronnie any way you can. either by short passes or handing it off. Everytime Ricky touched the ball today it killed me. The man hasnt even gotten a first down in years before today, and yet the coachin staff seems to think he’s better than a proven formula.

messed up with the play calling to start the game. They were not going to let us run the ball….we should of passed to set up the run….when we have to throw 43 times were in trouble……I like how ronnie looked, he will be getting the bulk of the runs after the bye….The way I see it ,we are a young team who made too many mistakes but fought to the end…….Now lets see improvement next week and hopefully we can pull off a win on the road…

OFFENSIVE LINE STUNK
Too many penalties and Calvin Pace ate Jake Long’s lunch all day long.
Ricky and Ronnie had zero blocking.
Matty I, you are dead-on about Wilford.
Ted Ginn was always out of position on his routes.

IF we had kicked the FG earlier, then we could have tied with a FG at the end.
I think the call was right at the time, since we needed a TD and that looked like our best chance to get it. Hindsight is 20/20, but I think you had to go for it at the time, down by 13 late into the 4th.

I only have a few comments:
~ It was a shame that we didn’t sign Calvin Pace
~ I was wondering the same thing about Wilford.
~ A lot of rookie/young team mistakes, including the penalties
~ I don’t agree that the coaches lost the game by not running on this last two plays. I was watching the Jets D and they were keying off the run, and our line was not blowing them back and creating running lanes.
~ The one complaint I have with the coaching is that they waited too long to open up the hurry up game. It changed the pace of the game, and let Chad P attack the Jets at their weakest point on D. The Jets were geared up to stop the run the entire game and we should have worked harder to loosen them up earlier.
~ was disappointed that we didn’t pull it out, but I enjoyed this game more than any game for a long time. The Ravens game last year included. I was so stressed about us winning that game last year that I can call the result enjoyable, but not the process. This game was actually a pretty good game, and I saw some very positive things out of the Fins on both sides of the ball. At the end of the game, I asked myself, when was the last time I enjoyed a Fins game right down to the last 5 secs of the game? It must have been the Buffalo comeback game.
Last thing… I don’t want to make finsxfactor’s day any worse, since he is obviously very upset, but dude, you are only 2 pts ahead in your fantasy game, and you have noone going tomorrow night.

This was a rookie team making many rookie mistakes. It was fun online pulling with other Dolphins fans for the win and it felt like we were all in one big room watching the game together. It goes right back to the same ole thing about the heartbreacking losses that we’ve endured together as fans. But one day we will be back in our glory. Face it
The jets are simply a better team right now. They added some really good people on both sides of the ball and it showed. They ran the ball better, defended the run better, have a better QB and better WRs.
Our rebuilding process wasn’t ever going to be a one year thing. We were competitive today and showed some heart, except at WR. Damn go up and fight for the f’ing ball will yah! I think Wilford got left on the Inactive list as a statement Tony to Bill “Is this your idea of WR help?” Matty’s right though I think he would have came in handy on the endzone plays. Another mistake by Sparano was leaving Penne in the pocket all day. The got constant penetration but we did not adjust to it, with roll out, draws or what ever else. But we have a rookie head coach so those are the growing pains I suppose. For me as bad as we played we were still one miss PI call on Bess in the endzone from winning this one and that’s encouraging.
